Letter to the Editor: Robin is clearly the best qualified candidate

To the Editor,

I enthusiastically support Robin McClelland for Shoreline city council.

As a longtime resident of Shoreline who has closely followed local politics since our City's inception, I believe that Robin is clearly the best qualified to effectively manage our City:

* professional background in urban planning
* long experience on Shoreline's planning commission [look at the results --- our City is doing well!]
* she is retired and has no personal agenda other than service to our City
* a problem solver who will continue the present Council's cooperative approach, avoiding the unnecessary expenses and rancor that characterized some previous Councils

I urge you to vote for McClelland. I believe she will best serve the City of Shoreline.

Robert Hauck, MD

Jazz Great Diane Schuur takes the stage at Northshore PAC

Diane Schuur, Jazz great
plays at Northshore PAC
Two-time Grammy Award winner and one of contemporary jazz's leading vocalist/pianists, Diane Schuur brings her distinctive jazz styling to the Northshore Performing Arts Center (18125 92nd Ave. NE, Bothell). Schuur and her band will perform in concert Saturday, November 12 at 7:30 PM.

A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the '40s and '50s, Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents' generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and '60s. Born in Tacoma, Washington, in December 1953, Schuur grew up in nearby Auburn, Washington, where her father was a police captain. Nicknamed Deedles at a young age, Schuur discovered the world of jazz via her father, a piano player, and her mother, who kept a formidable collection of Duke Ellington and Dinah Washington records in the house.

In a recording career that spans nearly three decades - and includes two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations - Schuur's music has explored nearly every corner of the 20th century American musical landscape. In her latest CD release The Gathering, Schuur turns a corner into a brand new lane, infusing her jazz sensibilities into ten country-brewed tunes from such seminal songwriters as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Cochran, Kris Kristofferson, Roger Miller and others.

Ticket prices for this special event are Adults/$45, Seniors/$40, and Youth under 17 yrs/$25. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling 425-984-2471.

State School Supt. announces launch of Jobs for Washington's Graduations organization

The establishment of a new, statewide organization devoted to keeping students in school and helping them with employment will help in reducing Washington’s dropout rate, said State Superintendent Randy Dorn.

Dorn made the comments October 20 as part of the official launch of Jobs for Washington’s Graduates. The organization is part of Jobs for America’s Graduates.

“Not having a high school diploma can be a huge roadblock to a successful career,” said Dorn. “The great thing about JAG is that it not only keeps students in school but also exposes them to potential careers, teaches employability and leadership skills, so that they are employable.”

Washington became a state member of JAG in 2010. Jobs for Washington’s Graduates is a nonprofit organization with a board of directors. Its mission is to develop and support JWG programs in Washington state.

The JAG model targets three groups of students: school-to-career for seniors, a multi-year program for all high school students and an out-of-school program for students who have dropped out and want to reenter school.

Based on research studies, JAG has compiled a list of 35 barriers to success, such as low academic performance, a past record of excessive absences and family income. Students who are accepted into the program complete a profile that asks them to identify all of their barriers. Removing as many of those barriers as possible is a chief component of the program and will help students succeed.

Barriers are most often removed through the JAG curriculum, which is based on competencies. In partnership with employers and educators, JAG has identified a total of 88 competencies for all students, from middle school to those who had dropped out. The competencies are divided into 20 sections, including job survival competencies, economic empowerment competencies and life survival skills.

Washington is the only JAG state that ties the JAG program to career and technical education classes. This gives students skills training along with JAG training. And beginning this year, students can begin receiving credentials for certain classes they take, which can lead to industry certification.

Shorecrest students make keynote presentation at LFP Stewardship Foundation annual meeting

The annual meeting of the LFP Stewardship Foundation on Wednesday, November 2, will be held at the LFP City Council Chambers at City Hall from 7-8pm.

Refreshments will be served. RSVPs are suggested. Email the Foundation or phone Mamie Bolender, 206-364-4410.

The Watershed Report - Update
Co-sponsored by Friends of the Cedar River Watershed and the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation, the Watershed Report will be presented by Shorecrest sophomores Ben Pedigo, Serendipity Ancira, and Wylie Chang, along with Executive Producer and Leadership Coach, Peter Donaldson. Peter was recognized as the 2010 non-formal Environmental Teacher of the Year by the Environmental Education Association of Washington State. Peter is a champion of applied academic excellence in service to community problem solving; the Local Living Textbook.

What is the Watershed Report?
The Watershed Report is a series of short videos that track positive sustainability trends within our Watershed Address, including reports on green building, energy, stormwater, water conservation, sustainable schools and other issues. The Watershed Report videos are narrated entirely by well informed high school students. There are no expert interviews or adult speakers. Leadership students from 10 high schools representing 7 school districts, plus the private school network, analyze and update these elegant and inspiring data narratives on an annual basis.

Comment from Martha Kongsgaard, Leadership Council Chair, Puget Sound Partnership after the 10 school presentation at the Seattle REI on September 8, 2011:

“This work is important and powerful and we need to get it into the hands of decision makers and school kids alike. It’s going to help us as a region embrace a common, durable destiny. The Watershed Report is not just a report or a living textbook on the adult world of policy. These young leaders are setting the terms of the debate and heading us in a new direction, into a new framework for the future.”

Get your Good To Go! pass in Shoreline Wednesday, November 2

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced in August that tolling on State Route 520 across Lake Washington will start in December.

If you use SR 520 on a regular basis, WSDOT recommends that you get your Good To Go! pass now. There are several ways to purchase a pass before tolling begins, including going online.

To help make it convenient for Shoreline residents to purchase a pass, the City has invited the Good To Go! mobile kiosk to be at Shoreline City Hall from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2.

SR 520 will be the first bridge in the state with all-electronic tolling, rather than the cash-collection tollbooths that most people are familiar with. The all-electronic system, which allows tolls to be collected at highway speeds, will be able to track and handle more than 100,000 daily transactions on the SR 520 bridge. The tolls will be captured either through Good To Go! windshield stickers or through license-recognition photos, which automatically generate a bill that is mailed to drivers.

SR 520 tolling originally was set to begin this past spring; however, due to the complexity of the cutting edge all-electronic system there were delays. WSDOT wanted to ensure that the entire system was working and could be fully operational before tolling begins.

Tolling on SR 520 is expected to raise $1 billion overall toward the $4.65 billion SR 520 bridge replacement and HOV program, which builds 12.8 miles of safety and mobility improvements from Interstate 5 in Seattle to SR 202 in Redmond.

Learn more about the Good To Go! program.
