Shoreline Fire commissioners

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

The Shoreline Fire District was originally formed as King County Fire District No. 4 in 1939, but changed its name to Shoreline Fire to better identify with the community it serves.

It is a "special purpose district" providing fire suppression, emergency medical, and fire prevention services. The Board of Commissioners provide general direction in the areas of financial management, administration and policy adoption. Commissioners are elected by the citizens of Shoreline. Terms are for six years.

Current commissioners:
  • Ken Callahan: Term Expires December 31, 2013
  • Jim Fisher: Term Expires December 31, 2013
  • David Harris: Term Expires December 31, 2011 - currently running for election, unopposed
  • Rod Heivilin: Term Expires December 31, 2015
  • Jon Kennison: Term Expires December 31, 2011 - currently running for reelection
The number of commissioners was recently increased from three to five to be in compliance with state law, required when a department no longer has a volunteer program.

Per the Revised Code of Washington, Commissioners are entitled to per diem pay of $104.00 per meeting or "in performance of other services or duties on behalf of the Department." The state places an annual cap of $9,984.00 on the amount of per diem that a Commissioner may receive.

The Board meets at 5pm on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 17525 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133.

The Fire Department is an independent taxing district, separate from Shoreline City government.

Meet the Candidates: Shoreline Fire Commissioner Pos 4: David Harris

David Harris
Shoreline Fire Commissioner Pos 4
I am a lifelong resident of Shoreline, and a residential homebuilder.

I was appointed to the Shoreline Fire Department Board of Commissioners after a competitive recruitment process in early 2010, when the Board was increased from three to five Commissioners. Prior to this, my fire department experience was as a Reserve Volunteer Firefighter for twenty-seven years. From this service time and requisite training, I have gained an overall understanding of fire and emergency medical service operations, and insights into the public expectations for these vital services.

Other community service includes an appointment to the Shoreline Planning Commission by the City Council, and serving two four-year terms, and acting as the Chairman two of those years As a planning commissioner, I worked with staff, other commission members, and the public, solving land use and planning issues, in a collaborative manner.

Over the years, Shoreline Fire Department has provided superior fire and emergency medical services to our district, establishing a tradition of excellence I will strive to maintain. In these difficult times of shrinking revenues, as your Commissioner, I am committed to using all of our resources, creatively and wisely, to maintain a high level of emergency services for our community.

Letter to the Editor: Arne Lind will keep your sewer rates affordable

To the Editor:

Arne Lind, the incumbent Commissioner for Ronald Wastewater District in Shoreline, has an interesting race in this November’s general election. His opponent, Bob Ransom, is an advocate of liquidating the Ronald Wastewater District into the City of Shoreline.

In contrast, Arne Lind wants to protect the Ronald Wastewater District voters and ratepayers from a utility tax. He wants to preserve ratepayer’s right to vote on whether the City of Shoreline can merge with Ronald Wastewater District. This past year Arne went to Olympia to block the City of Shoreline and its Council’s proposed bill to eliminate each citizen’s right to vote on a takeover of Ronald Wastewater District. Vote for Arne Lind to protect the Ronald wastewater utility from merger without a citizen vote.

I endorse Arne Lind because his vision is the right vision for Ronald Wastewater District not Bob Ransom’s vision. Arne has served the District on the Regional Water Quality Council and Arne has been persistent in his efforts to save the ratepayer’s money. Arne is a major reason Ronald’s local rates have remained the same these last four years for local wastewater collection services at $11.15 per month.

A vote for Arne Lind’s opponent Bob Ransom may lead to the merger of Ronald Wastewater District into the City of Shoreline, if that occurs you can kiss your hard earned money good bye. Ronald’s sewers will go unfixed, citizen’s utility rates will go up, and the local capital improvement fund will be wasted. You will not get transparent financial reports on how the wastewater district is operated if Shoreline runs Ronald. Vote for Arne Lind, Ronald Wastewater Commissioner and protect your right to vote.

Blood Drive In Richmond Beach Saturday

The Puget Sound Blood Center mobile unit will be at the Shoreline Fire Safety Center, at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, this Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Most healthy adults weighing at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate, if it's been 8 weeks since their last donation. This year the Richmond Beach blood drive has been trying to encourage first timers, and so far a dozen people have added themselves to the rolls of those who roll up their sleeves.

Donating blood takes just 45 minutes, from the tablet computer health questionnaire sign-in to the cookies and juice before you go. Walk-ins are always welcome, but the Richmond Beach events have grown so popular -- frequently filling the bloodmobile to capacity -- that appointments are advised. It's easy: go to the website or call 1-800-398-7888.

Letter to the Editor: I'm voting for Jesse, Arne, and Chris - and Janet!

To the Editor:

I was intrigued by the letter re: Robin McClelland – and grateful to be informed of this event. My experience was that I had mentioned to Robin while she was on the Planning Commission regarding a shameful development in our neighborhood which essentially (and actually has) permitted routine, permanent heavy equipment use within a very short distance – and full impact our homes. Robin initially indicated interest and said something about following up. However, I never saw hide nor hair of her after that… In contrast, Councilmember Janet Way visited me twice to review and understand the circumstances and to provide a greater understanding of land use rules and procedures. This was very helpful for a citizen who barely knew what a zone was… Needless to say, while I don’t know Jesse Israel [Salomon], having heard from the other writer and my own experience, I will vote for him. You can guess who else I am voting for? A councilmember who really walks the talk regarding genuinely caring for the citizens of Shoreline!

Re: Water Commission
If it ain’t broke – DON’T FIX IT! Arne Lind has done a fabulous job for some years – we have GREAT rates! Why is Bob even running against him???

Re: Chris Eggen
Another very deserving and caring Councilmember who has my full support.

Meet the Candidates: Ronald Wastewater Commissioner Pos. 1: Arne Lind

Arne Lind
Ronald Wastewater Commissioner  Position 1
It is not often that a contest for commissioner in the 68 year old Ronald Wastewater District has cast an opponent for the incumbent, Arne Lind.

This November's race proves interesting because the opponent, Bob Ransom, is an advocate of assumption of the district by the City of Shoreline pursuant to a contract, whereas the incumbent Arne Lind asserts that the contract for assumption is not valid without a vote of the ratepayers in Shoreline.

A ratepayer's right to vote on this issue he vows to protect. Why do I say this? I believe that the city will impose a utility tax on the the ratepayer, without any limit, causing the sewer rate to escalate beyond the present $ 11.15 charged per month.

Ronald has held the rate steady for the past 4 years and does not expect a raise this year. A vote for Arne Lind will assure you the right to vote on assumption and will continue to hold the line the line on costs, insuring you the lowest possible sewer rate.

King County and Sound Transit land $14.4 million in federal grants for buses, facilities

Metro North Base lid to be redone.
Photo from Wikipedia

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today, October 17, 2011, awarded King County $6 million in grants that will enable Metro to improve facilities and enhance its ability to monitor and track the efficiency of its transit assets.

Sound Transit received $8.4 million in separate FTA grants that will help replace aging buses with new vehicles featuring hybrid-diesel technology, and will help make the new Link light rail station at South 200th Street in SeaTac more accessible for bus transfers, bicyclists and pedestrians when it opens in 2016.

The grants will create jobs and make ST Express fleet greener.

The $6 million FTA grant will fund replacement of the roof at Metro’s north transit base, which has reached the end of its useful life. When completed, this green roof will continue to support a neighborhood playground on top, which has been a popular play area for a number of years.

Neighbors helped create mosaic pavers.

The park was designed by Laura Haddad. In 1995, she was awarded a $10,000 grant for art in the park but decided that the space was so grim and drab that the money would be better spent redesigning the area for public use.

The grant will replace the lid and renew the park.
From the Haddad Drugan website:
"Existing materials including concrete pavers, picnic tables, plants, and a sandbox were moved and transformed to create a series of smaller-scaled, friendly, and playful spaces. Colorful paint and perennials were added, and a new entry portal replaced the chain link fence. Laura worked with park neighbors to cast and inlay mosaic-concrete pavers that were incorporated into the park."

This program is geared to multi-generational groups including adults in their forties, fifties and sixties who are interested in capturing the stories of their parents and grandparents while there is still time and to seniors.

Tuesday forum in Richmond Beach includes county offices and school board

By Tom Peterson

Tuesday evening, October 18, 2011, brings the second of the Candidates Forums sponsored by the Richmond Beach Community Association. Candidates for Shoreline School Board, Port of Seattle, King County Director of Elections, Assessor, and Justices will present themselves and answer questions.

This is a moderated event, with questions only accepted in writing and edited to clarity, pertinence, fairness, and to consolidate duplicates. There is a sound system, so everyone can hear. The Forum will be from 7 pm to 9 pm in the basement of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, 1501 NW 195th Street (corner of Richmond Beach Road and 15th Ave NW), Shoreline 98177. All are welcome, not just Richmond Beach residents or RBCA members!

City Council candidates address the crowd at the RBCA forum

Forum #1, last Tuesday, featuring those running for City Council, Fire Commissioner and Wastewater Board, filled all the seats, and was a lively and efficient evening. While most anticipated that the ongoing Point Wells development controversy would dominate the discussion, the somewhat-under-the-radar plan by the City of Shoreline to take over Ronald Wastewater in 2017, supposedly without a public vote, exploded into a major controversy and went to the front burner of election issues for both the Wastewater Commissioner and City Council hopefuls.
