More on the Artists:

Bejeweled.  Photo by Betty Udesen.

In my Teatime Series, subjects are the wild birds who visit my front porch studio in Seattle. I tuck seed into the props to lure them in. I work in a state of attentive patience. It’s a bit like photographing a baseball game - sometimes there’s a very long wait.

If you recognize my name, perhaps you’ve seen it in print along with my photographs in The Seattle Times, my employer for 24 years. During my time with the paper, and as an independent photographer, I’ve done projects in Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Central and South America, Denmark, Cuba and Israel, as well as here in Seattle.

I live near Green Lake with my husband, Benjamin Benschneider, who is also a photographer. Our two kitties delight in watching birds through the windows.

Thread Bird.  Hand-cut paper by Alisa Lahti.

My artwork is created using intricate, hand cut paper combined with other mixed media elements. I am inspired by the paper-cutting traditions of my Polish heritage, life in the Pacific Northwest and nature, with interpretations ranging from traditional to contemporary design influences. In this series, I continue to explore my fascination and amusement with feathers, wings and things that fly.

Is one religious faith more compatible than another with our social, economic and political circumstances?

Are we becoming more or less tolerant of others of different religious faiths?

Letter to the Editor: Jesse Salomon has listened to me and my neighbors

To the Editor:

Before the election ballots arrive, consider the experience of our Parkwood neighborhood with Candidate Robin McClelland.  In 2008 a developer proposed a 6-story, 210-unit building, not just adjacent to our single family homes and residential neighborhood, but 20 feet off our property lines.  Ms. McClelland, a member of the Planning Commission, suggested that the developer be required to come onto our property and plant “a few rhododendrons”.  Apparently she thought the rhodys would mitigate the size of the development.  My neighbor, who also attended the meeting, had a slightly different version of what happened, “she was berating to you and said that she had been doing this kind of development work longer and knew better what is appropriate”.
Do I trust Robin McClelland, as my representative on the City Council, to be “a strong proponent of protecting the livability of our neighborhoods”?  Not so much.

Jesse Solomon has visited, spoken with and listened to me and my neighbors.  I think he is cares about the well being of our single family residential neighborhoods and will represent us on the City Council.

Don't feed raw fish to your pets

King 5.com has a story about a dog who nearly died after eating a small piece of raw salmon.

Dr. Cherie Guidry of Helping Hands Vet Clinic says most people don't know not to feed dogs raw fish.
"If left untreated, 90 percent of the cases are fatal, the dogs will die within 2-3 weeks,” she said.
After weeks of antibiotics and de-worming treatments, it’s safe to say you won't find salmon in the Greger's kitchen, but you will find their survivor.
If your dog gets a hold of raw salmon get to the vet. And remember, sometimes the symptoms take weeks to show up and there are other dangerous fish.

Densmore Pathway project celebrates completion of first stage

Before.  Photo by Suzanne Wynne

Neighbors volunteering for the Densmore Pathway project celebrated the completion of the first stage of their project to create a landscaped pathway on the right-of-way between Densmore and Ashworth at 188th N.

Under the sponsorship of the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association, the project is funded by a City of Shoreline mini-grant.

During.  Photo by Suzanne Wynne.
A neighbor who is a landscape architect donated the design and volunteers are doing the installation and planting.

Project coordinator Suzanne Wynne said, "The project will transform a poorly maintained cut through to a beautiful and accessible pathway. Wildlife habitat will be created as well as a small community gathering place for the neighborhood."

Part of the pathway area is currently being used by the contractor building the sidewalk along Ashworth.  They will be using the west side of the pathway until the beginning of November. However, Thanks to negotiation by the City, the contractor has offered to install the pathway in the space they are using and will build up planting beds for the project.

After the first section is complete. Photo by Suzanne Wynne.

The next work party is scheduled for November 12. Contact Suzanne Wynne to volunteer.

Meet the Candidates: Shoreline Fire Commissioner Pos 1: Kim Fischer

Saturday, October 15, 2011

Kim Fischer
I work in Shoreline Schools, and volunteer on the CERT team.

I am deeply aware of the dedication and commitment a career in public safety requires. I am honored and grateful for the endorsement of the Shoreline Firefighters Union 1760 in this campaign.

Serving as a Fire Commissioner is the ultimate way to support our firefighter and paramedics, and to contribute to health, safety, fire protection and emergency management in our community.

I will work hard to assure Shoreline Fire has the resources it needs to protect and respond in our community, and to plan for growth and increased demand for service.

I will place special emphasis on how Fire and EMS interfaces with the City of Shoreline in a major disaster.

As commissioner, I will make sure levy funding is spent efficiently to support Shoreline Fire in maintaining a responsible and sustainable level of service to our community.

Meet the Candidates: Shoreline Water Commissioner Pos 1: Ron Ricker

Ron Ricker, Shoreline Water Commissioner Position 1
Ron has lived in Lake Forest Park since 1957. He recently retired from his family-owned business, which he ran for over 30 years.

Ron first became interested in the Water District in the early 1960s, when he began regularly attending District Board meetings. When there was a vacancy on the Board, he was appointed to fill that position and subsequently ran and was elected to the Board.

Ron's interest in water policy led to his involvement on behalf of the District at the regional level where he has been working on long-term supply issues. In working for ten years with Suburban Cities and the City of Seattle, he helped develop a regional water group.

The rewards for Commissioner, he says, are the ability to do something for the community, the camaraderie in working with others on issues of common interest, and the intellectual challenge of making good, long-range decisions about water.

Open House- Meet the Artists on Thursday, November 3, 5:30-7 pm

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and the Shoreline City Hall Gallery present a fascinating new exhibit, Vistas, showcasing artwork that explores the surfaces, depths and entanglements of landscape. Light, color and form all influence the photography by Karen Frank, paintings by Kathy Frugé-Brown, Dorene Steggell and Meredith Thompson and sculpture by Kristin Tollefson. Join us for a special after-hours reception on Thursday, November 3, 5-7 pm. Refreshments will be served.

More from the Artists:

I am a painter and printmaker with a long-standing interest in landscape. The river and forest surrounding my Pacific Northwest studio are a constant source of imagery and spiritual nourishment to me, and for the last several years have been the major subject of my work. My landscape paintings are all done outdoors from life, usually in oil on canvas, though I often do smaller pieces in oil on paper. This past year I designed the Aurora Town Center banners based on my original linoleum block prints.

All of my work deals with nature--abstract realism that sometimes pushes toward the completely abstract. I'm interested in the transformation of objects by natural processes or the interaction of objects/water/light. I want people to do a double-take, take a second look because they're not quite sure what they are seeing. The metamorphosis of the ordinary into the mysterious helps us view things in a new way.

Steggell "Green Water Island"
“The concepts of place and space are primary to my work and my experience of the world. I have lived west of the Cascade Mountains for several decades and the experience of this place, as manifest in the open spaces of its fields and waters, inspires many of my paintings.”

Meredith Thompson
What makes color vibrate? The paintings I'll be showing in November play with how to make colors push and pull each other in a two dimensional space. In this painting, "Forest Feathers," I'm capturing the mystical feel of light brushing the tree canopy and dangling down through branches and moss to rest on the forest floor. Painting on-site and outdoors has allowed me to use color and light to create a depth of time. Within one painting, including this one, there is a range of warm soft glows to cool hues of a midday sun. I love working mostly outdoors, allowing the natural elements to employ a very fresh and raw feeling to my work.

Tollefson "Strange Fruit"

I am drawn to the sweetness of the grove and the sustained contradictions it holds. A rigorous twenty-foot square planting grid begets sprawling trees with rare fruit and baroque names: Wealthy, King, Gravenstein, Dutch Mignone, Red Astrachan, Rhode Island Greening, Bietigheimer, and Esopus Spitzenberg. A snag punctuates the edge of the planted hill; an unruly mound of blackberry cane encroaches. I propose a celebratory mediation: the snag serves as a structure around which to weave the thorny cane studded with fantastical fruit evocative of the fruits of the orchard. As light and color enliven the tree trunk, its clustered adornment alludes to the bees whose home adorns the snag, busy caretakers of this fruit forest.

Exhibit times
This exhibit runs from November 1 - January 27 at the Shoreline City Hall Gallery and may be viewed any time during regular hours, Monday - Friday, 9am - 5 pm except holidays. The Shoreline City Hall is located at 17500 Midvale Ave. N, Shoreline, WA 98133. For more information please contact the Arts Council at 206-417- 4645 or by email.

Seattle Humane Society offers a free neuter and low-cost spay day for cats on November 1

The Seattle Humane Society is holding a FREE Neuter (and Low-Fee Spay) Day for Cats on November 1, 2011.

Male cats will be neutered for FREE and females spayed for $15 (additional charges may apply for complicated surgeries). Feline microchipping and FVRCP vaccines will also be available for $5 each.

Appointments are required. Low-income cat lovers can make an appointment online at seattlehumane.org or call 425-649-7560. The surgeries will be done at the Seattle Humane Society, 13212 SE Eastgate Way in Bellevue. Cats must be at least 4 months old.

Spaying/neutering keeps cats from producing unwanted litters and it actually improves a pet's health. The simple surgery reduces reproductive cancers in females and prostate cancer in males. Other benefits include making them less likely to roam and become injured, less likely to spray or mark, and less likely to exhibit dominant behavior.

Seattle Humane Society’s Neuter (and Spay) Day for Cats is made possible thanks to a $5,000 grant from The Washington Federation of Animal Care and Control Agencies. The funds for this grant award are made possible by the sale of Washington State “We Love Our Pets” license plates.

LFP Rotary hears from mayoral candidates

By Marjorie Ando

A short Mayoral candidate forum was held at the LFP Rotary Club meeting, on Wednesday, October 12, in front of a crowd of interested Rotarians and LFP voters.

Bob Edwardsen was the moderator, setting forth the questions and handling the timing for each candidate. Before beginning the session, he called everyone's attention to the Four Way Test that the Rotarians follow in their Service Above Self work in the community and worldwide.

Each candidate, Dwight Thompson and Mary Jane Goss, introduced themselves and then the forum proceeded to the questions asked of each candidate with their followup rebuttals. The questions and answers were thought-provoking and will be of help for many of the listeners as they make their decision of how they will vote.

Next week, the club will hear from the six candidates for City Council seats. It promises to be another packed house of members, the candidates, and guests.
