2008 Shorewood grad auditions for The X Factor

Peet Montzingo in 2010
Peet Montzingo charmed the judges, but charisma wasn't enough to get the 2008 Shorewood grad past the auditions of the X Factor.

It was enough to get him and his mother Vicki Montzingo a long segment on the television show, which aired Wednesday evening, September 28.

All four judges, including the blunt and often rude Simon Cowell, encouraged Peet, saying he had what it took to be a successful performer.  You can watch his audition here.

This is Peet's second star turn on a national TV show, as he was a contestant and close runner up in the physical game show Wipe Out! last year. (see story).

His mother, Shoreline resident Vicki Montzingo, is an actress (see previous story).

Victims of home explosion have strong ties to Shoreline

Hong (Phung) Ingham
According to a new story on King 5.com, the couple who were injured in an explosion caused by a leaking gas service line (see previous story) have been identified as David and Hong (Phung) Ingham of Seattle.

There was a gas leak, possibly from corroded pipes, which allowed natural gas to pool under their home. When Hong flipped the bathroom light switch in the morning, the gas exploded. The couple were able to get out of the house before it continued to explode into small pieces and burn to the ground.

According to King 5, "Hong has been a food service worker at the Crestwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a part of CRISTA Ministries in Shoreline, for nearly ten years. Her brother and sister also work there."  According to our sources, another brother works for the school district.

CRISTA says that "Hong is currently in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center’s intensive care unit. David was discharged on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 27."

"100% of your donation at this page will be provided to Hong and David as they recover from the Sept. 26 tragedy. Thank you for your donation and prayers for their recovery."

ShorelineAreaNews readers reported hearing the explosion from Echo Lake to Kenmore.  Briarcrest readers who were home said that it sounded like a collision, whereas those farther north thought that large tree branches had fallen on the roof.

City retains Foster Pepper to counsel on Point Wells legal strategy

From the City of Shoreline

Shoreline has retained Foster Pepper to review the City’s legal strategy regarding Point Wells. While the City feels confident that negotiating with Point Wells developer BSRE Point Wells is currently the City’s best option to protect the community’s interests, it is seeking Foster Pepper’s expertise and advice on all options.

In announcing the retention, City Attorney Ian Sievers stated, “We are pleased to have Foster Pepper join us in assessing opportunities both in the negotiations we are committed to try, or further litigation if those negotiations fail to reach the City’s objectives. We will have the participation of Steve DiJulio and Richard Settle, who have are well known experts in municipal law, SEPA and GMA. Steve successfully defended the SEPA/NEPA challenge to the Aurora Project for the City.”

It is expected the City Attorney and Foster Pepper will narrow the legal issues that are important in resolving the Shoreline community’s objections to the BSRE project with input from the Council. The Council will then be briefed on the review in executive session. As was discussed at the September 6th Council study session on the City’s Letter of Intent to BSRE, the questions for review by Foster Pepper and their responses and advice will be considered attorney/client privilege and will not be released to the public.

Taproot Theatre brings a new production to Shoreline classrooms to help prevent bullying

Monday, September 26, 2011

On Wednesday, September 14, students at Brookside Elementary School in Lake Forest Park saw Taproot Theatre's touring company's new production of Allies from Outer Space.

Taproot's innovative shows confront issues of diversity and bullying prevention, and provide resources which encourage conversation amongst students and adults alike.  Students learn how to "recognize, refuse, and report" bullying, how to be an ally, and how to initiate friendship.

The government organization Stop Bullying Now! reports that as many as 1 in 4 students have been the target of bullying and 9 out of 10 students report that bullying occurs in their schools.

The Shoreline School District has contracted the TTC Road Company to perform in all fourteen of their elementary and secondary schools in fall 2011.

Allies from Outer SpaceBy Bethany Wallace, Directed by Nathan Jeffrey, For Grades K-6
Jeepers creepers, the aliens are coming to school, and they never shower! So goes the rumor mill when a Reptai spaceship makes an emergency landing on earth. While waiting for repairs, the Reptai queen on board sends her daughter to the local school to scope out whether the rumors she’s heard are true: that humans are intolerant of differences and use their technology to bully others. Will the students at Galaxia Elementary treat Princess Komodo with respect despite her tail and webbed fingers? Or will their bullying behavior lead the queen to take drastic measures against bullying and wipe out earth’s technology… for good?

Taproot also took this new production to Kings Elementary School on Friday, September 16. At both schools, the cast made classroom visits in addition to the stage production.

On Friday, September 16, they staged Don't Tell Jessica at Shorecrest High School.

Don’t Tell Jessica…, By Josh Hornbeck, Directed by Nathan Jeffrey, For Grades 6-12
A play about gossip, rumors and cyber-bullying.

It all started with a rumor—or was it the truth? In an age when gossip spreads like wildfire, a seemingly harmless message can destroy friendships, reputations and lives. At Clements High, homecoming is just around the corner and the stakes are high as a group of friends discovers the danger of jealousy when it is wielded like a weapon in e-mails and social networks. The drama will resonate deeply with students, who will see their classmates—and themselves – in the characters played out on stage.
