Troop 325 summer activities took scouts to New Mexico and Lake Chelan

By Suzanne Gugger

The boy scouts in local troop 325 were very busy this past summer.

In addition to spending a week at BSA summer camp in the North Cascades, they paddled in canoes over 75 miles around Lake Chelan in August.

A group of adults and older scouts from the troop traveled to New Mexico, to Philmont Ranch, a National Boy Scout Camp for two weeks of rugged backpacking in the mountains.

The 70 mile hike took them to the top of Mount Phillips at 11,700 feet. They brought back wonderful memories and a few blisters as souvenirs.

The troop is looking to recruit new boys age 11-18 who are looking to experience exciting outdoor adventures this year.

Troop 325 is a boy-led, non-denominational troop. Boys meet weekly during the school year and participate in local service and WTA (Washington Trails Association) trail maintenance projects, cycling and canoeing trips, car camping, backpacking, hiking, orienteering, and so much more.

Contact Suzanne at 206-533-6439 for more information or just drop by any Monday evening 7:15-8:30pm at First Lutheran of Richmond Beach church, located at 18354 - 8th Avenue NW, 1 block south of Richmond Beach Road.

WeatherWatcher: La Nina advisory - what does it mean locally?

On September 8th, 2011, the National Weather Service, Climate Prediction Center released their latest El Nino/Southern Oscillation Diagnostic discussion.

A La Nina advisory has been issued. La Nina conditions have returned in August and may get stronger as we approach and continue through the winter of 2011-2012. The strength of this winter's La Nina is still in the air right now, however typically they are weaker than the previous year in a "double dip" La Nina.

What I call a double dip La Nina (La Nina 2 years in a row) has not been very common over the past four decades. However remember the prolonged snow event we had in December 2008 lasting several weeks? That was also a double dip La Nina winter.

What this means for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park

Fall:
Effects of this weather pattern are not expected to strengthen until late fall, about Mid-November on. For the rest of September and October we are expected to have slightly above normal average temperatures, with above average precipitation, or in this case, rain. There are concerns we could see more urban flooding than normal, local creeks may have more erosion, especially in Lake Forest Park.

Winter:
We will have continued above average precipitation, with colder than normal average temperatures returning around Mid-late November, not unlike last winter. La Nina winter conditions favor more frequent, or more intense snow events than normal in the area, however there have been past La Nina winters with little or no snow fall. Due to other oceanic currents and ocean surface and sub surface temperatures globally it is possible that we may have one of the worst winters we've seen in decades.
I will wait until we get through the first half of November before we talk about what spring may be like. It's better to prepare for a few snow days, and severe weather now, than to wait until forecasters start talking about specific storms, that's when everyone else will dash to the store for supplies. So get ready now, and save your self some stress, for possibly another winter like 2008-2009, and last winter. Remember September is National Preparedness Month!
My judgment on our local weather is based on my past experience studying the effects of ENSO locally and of studying historical weather events that occurred here and in the greater Seattle area since record keeping begin, coordinated with the known past of the ENSO status each year.

Nothing is more dazzling than a great display of spring color: a bed blazing with daffodils, tulips (cherry red or soft pink or deepest purple or purest white) edging your border, hyacinths wafting their perfume beside your front door… Explore the lesser-known bulbs too—snowdrops bravely proclaiming the certainty of spring in January, the starburst or spherical flowers of allium, demurely heart-shaped cyclamen in Valentine tones of pink, white, and red. Feeling blue? Try scilla, native camassia, exotic bellevalia…. Ken will tell you everything you need to know about choosing, planting, and enjoying these beauties.

Genealogy with Lisa Marker: Saving yourself

By Lisa Marker

You can put your memories together!

Don’t wait to start labeling your photos, or to start telling your story (writing it down).

I just spent several weeks preparing to go to a weekend reunion of the camp that I attended for several years as a kid.

Part of the preparation was scanning photos from my camp days, and trying to figure out the Who-When-Where of each photo. I got lucky in that I uncovered some memory books made at the time that contained some fellow campers names, as well the counselors’ names. I also found the camp alumni page on FaceBook, and through some sharing there, managed to come up with some other names.

However, thirty plus years later, I did manage to screw some things up - like reversing a couple of years and mislabeling photos (which did get corrected, but only after I’d put a lot of work into it already). I wish I’d done it the moment I got them home after camp.

The moral of the story is: now is the time to start recording your life. It does not have to be all at once. And don’t worry about your skill as a writer. Just write. Your life is interesting now. Your descendants will love you for doing it!

If you have trouble coming up with topics, there are tons of oral interview questions on the web. Another resource with lots of questions to kick-start your memory is a book called “To Our Children’s Children,” by Bob Greene.

Write about certain times in your life (school years, summers, holidays), or choose topics, like your favorite music, movies or vacation spots. Give the reader a sense of who you were, where you grew up, why you chose to do something (or had to).

Use photos as memory prompts too - you might be reminded of a certain event, and be able to describe it in detail.

If you are overwhelmed by this right now, get out some photos of people you recognize. Label them with full descriptions - full names, and as much detail as you can put in about when and where the photo was taken.

Although I won’t go into the details of preserving photos here, please don’t use ball point pen on photos. You will ruin them in the long run. Obtain a photo labeling pencil (search for this online) to write descriptions on the back. Be gentle with your photographs.

Start recording your stories now - you remember more now than you will later (trust me!), and you might even have some fun!

Shoreline celebrates completion of Aurora Avenue N between N 165th – N 185th Streets at Saturday, September 24 Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

From the Office of the City Manager

After years of planning and a year and a half of construction, the second mile of Shoreline’s Aurora Corridor Improvement Project, N 165th to N 185th Streets, is almost complete.

Come celebrate this milestone at the City’s ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, September 24, 1:00 p.m. in the park between Midvale and Aurora just north of N 175th Street.

Improving Aurora has been a goal since the City incorporated in 1995. Completion of the second mile brings that vision closer to reality. The project represents years of community work and planning by Shoreline residents; businesses; property owners; state, county and federal agencies; utility companies and other groups.

“The completion of the second mile is a significant milestone in our creation of a safer and easier-to-use Aurora Avenue,” says Mayor Keith McGlashan. “Shoreline residents and business owners will notice a vast improvement in the traffic flow, convenience, walkability and appearance of the Aurora Corridor.”

Shoreline’s section of Aurora carries approximately 40,000 vehicles per day and is a major transit route. Improving safety and access for both pedestrians and motorists is one of the driving forces of the project. Other goals include improving vehicle capacity, traffic flow, transit speed and reliability, nighttime visibility and safety, stormwater control and economic investment potential.

“We recognize that construction has been difficult for both residents and businesses and we appreciate the community’s patience and willingness to work with the City during construction,” says Shoreline City Manager Julie Underwood.

Construction continues on Aurora between N 185th and N 192nd Streets with completion schedule for spring 2012. Once the City has secured the final bit of funding for the last section of Aurora from N 192nd to N 205th Streets, construction will begin.

The City looks forward to the improved safety and economic reinvestment that we experienced with the first mile. Please celebrate this accomplishment with us on Saturday, September 24.

For more information about the Aurora Corridor Project, contact Aurora Corridor Project Manager Kirk McKinley at 206-801-2481.
