A dazzling love letter from the 1950s, Pajama Game kicks off the Seattle Musical Theatre's 34th Season

See if love can beat the odds in this dazzling love letter from the 1950s, presented by the Seattle Musical Theatre, (formerly Civic Light Opera) located in Magnuson Park, 7120 62nd Ave NE.

Opening September 9 and running through October 2, performances are Friday through Sunday, with one Thursday night offering. Tickets are $35-$40 with special rates for seniors, students and group sales. Tickets can be purchased online  or by calling the box office at 206-363-2809.

The Pajama Game originally showcased the talents of Jerome Robbins, George Abbott, Bob Fosse and Harold Prince - four of the greatest talents in the history of American musical theatre. Although at first glance a relatively straightforward, conventional musical comedy, The Pajama Game proved to be one of the best musicals of the '50s, establishing the Broadway careers of Prince, Fosse, and songwriters Richard Adler and Jerry Ross.

Under the initial direction of George Abbott and Jerome Robbins, The Pajama Game won the 1955 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Choreographer. And the recent revival in 2006, highlighting Harry Connick Jr., took home the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, proving the enduring appeal of this classic American musical.
Set in a Cedar Rapids, Iowa pajama factory, the musical follows the journey of Babe Williams and Sid Sorokin, two employees in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory. Babe, the head of the union’s Grievance Committee, and Sid, the factory’s new foreman, must negotiate a labor dispute and a burgeoning romantic relationship at the same time.
Add to this the antics of other wacky characters and a timeless score featuring such songs as “Steam Heat,” “Hey There,” and “Hernando’s Hideaway,” and you have a musical that presents a serious message about worker’s rights, livable wages and corporate greed while never forgetting to entertain. The Pajama Game is also a snapshot of the way women in the workplace were perceived in the 1950’s.

City of Shoreline proposes to negotiate agreement with Point Wells developer to protect the City from project impacts

Press release from the City of Shoreline

The City of Shoreline has issued a Letter of Intent (LOI) to BSRE Pt. Wells, LP (BSRE), the owners of the Point Wells property, stating its intent to negotiate an agreement to protect the City from project impacts and to advance the City of Shoreline, the Shoreline Police Department and the Shoreline Fire Department as the logical providers of urban governmental services to the property.

As an approach to avoid costly and uncertain litigation, for several months City staff has met with BSRE to discuss the potential for an agreement. From time to time, the staff briefed the Council in executive session, regarding progress and to seek direction on the agreement as an alternate to potential future litigation and settlement of pending litigation. These discussions resulted in the development of the LOI.

The LOI outlines how the City and BSRE will work toward an agreement to measure and restrict traffic volumes and to define appropriate mitigation, and states the City’s intent to pursue annexation as the most appropriate way to address the ongoing impacts of future Point Wells’ residents who would use Shoreline’s roads, parks and services. The City proposes to calculate actual and projected traffic counts by project phase as they are built, and to prohibit subsequent phases if the traffic impacts would exceed the City’s adopted level of service for intersections and road segments in the Richmond Beach Road corridor.

“The only access is through Shoreline, so they are going to be driving through our City and using our parks, libraries, roads and police services. It’s only fair that future residents of Point Wells share, with City taxpayers, the burden of paying to maintain our shared high quality of life,” said Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan. “We recognize that this site is going to be redeveloped and we believe that the City is the most logical provider of services to the development,” he added. “The best way to protect the City, to address the demand for increased services and the long-term impacts is through annexing the property into Shoreline.”

If BSRE agrees to the principles and expectations described in the LOI, the City would avoid the cost, uncertainty, and risk of having to pursue further litigation to protect the City’s interests.

“While the LOI is not binding, it does provide a structure for developing an agreement that the City Council would formally act upon,” stated City Manager Julie Underwood. If a satisfactory agreement cannot be reached, the City is committed to pursuing other methods, including litigation, to protect the interests of Shoreline’s citizens and taxpayers.

In exchange for BSRE signing an agreement consistent with the principles and expectations set forth in the LOI, the City would recognize the current permit application in Snohomish County as a vested permit, and support the provision of urban governmental services to Point Wells by the Shoreline Fire Department and King County Sheriff’s Office.

With the release of the LOI, the Council directed staff to hold a community meeting to hear feedback from residents and update them on the current status of the Pt. Wells project. This meeting is scheduled for August 31, 6:30-8:30 pm, at Shoreline City Hall.

Planning Director Joe Tovar added, “Snohomish County will also soon begin the process of preparing the project’s environmental impact statement (EIS), so the meeting on August 31 is a good time for our citizens to tell the City what issues, impacts, and mitigations need to be addressed as that EIS moves forward.”

In addition to the community meeting, staff will provide an update of the Point Wells negotiations at the Council’s September 6th Study Session. During this meeting, the public is also invited to provide comment either at the beginning of the meeting or in writing to the Council.  Citizens may provide written comments to the City Council by emailing the Council.

Summer is over, but school has not started - what are you going to do with the kids?

Kids learning crafts at Jaicee Designs
Summer is over, but school has not started. What are you going to do with your kids?

Shoreline Schools don’t begin classes this year until September 12.

One place you can take your kids is Jaicee Designs in Edmonds.

There they will have a chance to practice crafts they know, and learn a variety of new ones. Each day there will be a "special project of the day" in addition to sewing, glass etching, ceramic painting, jewelry making, cooking, scrapbooking, knitting, weaving and more. Children will complete approximately 4-6 different projects daily depending on the craft projects.

They will be open for "No School Day Camp" every week-day from August 29 - September 9; but are closed on Labor Day. They are open from 8am to 6pm for No School Day Camps. The daily rate is $40 (all supplies included), but they have a special rate for people who buy a 5 pack - $185 ($37 per day) or a 10-pack $350 ($35 per day).

Classes are located at 24310 76th Ave West, Edmonds WA 98026

Throughout the whole school year, Jaicee Designs is open whenever school is off. The packages are good for any of these days and do not expire until June 20, 2012. To make a reservation, call 425-775-2035.

Jaicee Designs has four classrooms, each with a special focus such as sewing. This is their fourth year teaching summer camps, with an expanding curriculum including cooking, dog care, American Red Cross certified babysitting classes, computer keyboarding; as well as all the crafts listed above. They also have classes for homeschoolers, scout troops, and host crafting birthday parties.

You may also be familiar with Jaicee Designs through their non-profit division; Kids Are Creative that teaches at area schools. Jaicee Designs/Kids Are Creative have been teaching after school craft classes in area schools since 1995. If you are interested in their coming to your school this year, contact them at 425-775-1950.
