CleanScapes waste reduction tips: Moving and Cleaning

Home Sweet Home
Whether you are a student making the summer transition off campus, or moving to a new neighborhood or city, there are many ways to reduce waste during the moving process.

As you sort through your stuff and setting aside items that are not moving with you, consider the new life all of those unwanted things could have.

Reusable clothing, shoes, toys, sports equipment, electronics, appliances and furniture can be sold or donated online, or dropped off at any of the available non-profit donation sites around the city. There are even organizations that are willing to pick-up items at your residence.

If you have broken electronics, old cell phones, dead batteries, unusable clothing or Styrofoam, local recyclers will help you keep these items out of the landfill.

Take unwanted hazardous products like pesticides, paint or cleaning products to household hazardous waste drop-off locations in Seattle or King County.

When the time comes to pack everything up, save money by reusing free boxes listed online, used cardboard boxes from liquor stores and wholesale shopping centers, or support green businesses and rent reusable plastic packing totes.

After your move, continue the reuse cycle and donate your boxes online.

Once everything’s packed and you are ready to clean, help reduce the accumulation of more household hazardous waste by purchasing or making environmentally friendly cleaning products!

The Big Picture

The US Environmental Protection Agency reports that US residents and businesses sent 161,000,000 tons of material to landfills in 2009.

During the chaos of moving it may seem easier to trash the items you no longer want, but local businesses and non-profits have made it easy to find a new home for your unwanted items.

Instead of filling landfills, consider finding a new home or safe disposal for your unwanted stuff.

Brown Bear Car Wash will add sparkle to thousands of cars and trucks on August 25 as the Seattle-based, family-owned company offers free washes to celebrate its 54th anniversary.

Hours for the special one-day offer are from 8 am to 8 pm. The Shoreline Brown Bear is located at 16032 Aurora N, Shoreline 98133.

Brown Bear will be giving away free "Bear Essential" car washes at all of their automated "tunnel wash" locations in the Puget Sound area. Over the last five years, Brown Bear has washed 105,640 vehicles during its annual "free car wash day" to celebrate the company's founding.

"We've had an amazing response. It's a fitting way to say 'thank you' to our customers who have supported us over the years. And hopefully we've introduced new customers to the kind of service and value we deliver year around," said Brown Bear founder and owner Vic Odermat.

Odermat started Brown Bear in Seattle in 1957 with one location at 15th Ave West in Seattle. Brown Bear now owns and operates car washes throughout the Puget Sound area and Spokane.

Free child car seat check up event in north King County August 26

Are you sure it's installed correctly?
Friday, August 26, 2011, 11am - 3pm. Parking lot across from the Northshore Baptist Church, 10222 NE 145th St. Bothell, WA.

Public Health - Seattle and King County is hosting a free child car seat check up event in Bothell. Bring your car, child car seat and child or infant and learn how to properly install your car seat. For more information, contact Alan Abe, 206-263-8544.

Bothell may seem like a little far to go, but worth it to be sure that your child is actually protected by their car seat.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently recommended keeping children up to two years old in rear facing seats or until they have reached the maximum height and weight limits of the car seat as allowed by the manufacturer.

National research on child safety seats has found they reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants younger than one year old and by 54 percent for toddlers in passenger cars.

Providing effective and innovative health and disease prevention services for over 1.9 million residents and visitors of King County, Public Health – Seattle and King County works for safer and healthier communities for everyone, every day. More information here.

Local bands to play at Ballinger Outdoor Movie Night August 27

The Cajun Jamsters will play at Outdoor Movie Night

Two local bands are set to provide the pre-event entertainment at this year's Outdoor Movie Night showing of Toy Story 3 on Saturday, August 27 at Aldercrest Athletic Field off Ballinger Way and 25th Ave NE. Gates open at 7:30pm.

Grab your dancing shoes as the Cajun Jamsters get the night started with the lively music of the Cajun people. Drums and basses give their mostly accordion, fiddle, and guitar mix more beat for dancing. The Jamsters began when a couple of guys playing together on Tuesday nights started inviting others to join them. Twelve to twenty people now regularly jam. Though the music has roots in southern Louisiana, Cajun history goes back to ancestors forced out of Canada's Acadia region during the time of the French and Indian War. Cajun music made its debut in Seattle nearly 40 years ago at Folklife. The Seattle Zydeco Network has more information on area dances and bands.

Catywhompus String Band will play at Outdoor Movie Night
Rounding out the pre-event entertainment will be the Catywhompus String Band. The Peterkas formed their family band four years ago. They especially enjoy playing Old Time Music. This is the type of music many seniors remember from their childhoods.

The band consists of Zeth (11) on guitar and washboard, Devon (14) on fiddle and mandolin, Meghan on fiddle and washboard, and Brian on guitar and harmonica. The family lives on their “urban farm” in Shoreline where they homeschool their two children, raise chickens and bees, and grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and berries. Without a TV, evenings are often spent playing music together and learning new tunes. They often play at local farmers' markets and community events though you can also find them performing at local music festivals and square dances, including the Northwest Folklife Festival and the Phinney Ridge Community Center Family Dance.

Outdoor Movie Night is a joint endeavor between the Ballinger and North City Neighborhood Associations and is funded in part with a mini-grant from the City of Shoreline. In addition to the pre-movie musical entertainment, there'll be kids' crafts, carnival games, activities for teens and tweens and a raffle.

Admission is FREE and anyone can attend. Inexpensive concessions will be for sale but guests are permitted to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and a flashlight and stake out your spot. Dress appropriately for the weather. Walk in or carpool. Movie starts at dusk.

Evening traffic detoured around Jazz Walk venue Tuesday evening

Looking north on 15th NE in North City.  Photo by Jerry Pickard.

The "road to be closed" signs were up the day before, but the road closure on 15th NE for the Jazz Walk on Tuesday, August 16, still came as a surprise to evening commuters.

Traffic was backed up toward Seattle on 15th NE, with cars waiting through at least one light cycle before turning left onto NE 175th to be routed onto 10th NE, then back up to 15th via NE 180th.

Southbound traffic on 10th NE had a slow crawl to get to 15th NE.
A surprising number of cars were headed southbound on 10th NE, apparently coming from SR 99 to get on 15th NE southbound. They moved at a slow crawl through the intersection at NE 175th.

People already on the street for Jazz Walk were doing just fine on a warm summer evening.
