Business Continuity and Disaster Survival Strategies for the Small and Mid-Size Business

Marko Liias of Edmonds is running in 1st Congressional District, but which other potential candidates will be part of the District?

Rep. Marko Liias, D-21
By Evan Smith

As candidates announce plans to run for Congress next year, we still don’t know who will be part of which district.

We won’t really know until the bi-partisan redistricting commission finishes its work at the end of December.

Democratic State Rep. Marko Liias was one of the first candidates to announce for the 1st District position once incumbent Democratic Congressman Jay Inslee announced that he would give up the seat to run for governor.

Liias, who lives in Edmonds, also is the most likely of all candidates to stay in the 1st District.

Another candidate for the position is Democratic State Sen. Steve Hobbs. Hobbs’ Lake Stevens home is in the 2nd Congressional District, which stretches all the way to the Canadian border.

Could Hobbs end up in the 1st District?

Olympia-based Everett Herald politics writer Jerry Cornfield says that Hobbs is likely to end up in the 1st District.

The 2nd District will shrink, with the 1st District expanding into more of Snohomish County.

Cornfield reports that rumors have Lake Stevens moving to the 1st District.

Hobbs is a moderate Democrat who representss a swing legislative district in central Snohomish County and more often works closely with the District's Republican State Rep. Mike Hope than with liberal democratic State Rep. Hans Dunshee.

Other possible candidates are Republican James Watkins. who lost to Inslee in 2010, Democratic State Sen. Roger Goodman and former Democratic legislator Laura Ruderman. Watkins, Goodman and Ruderman all are from the Kirkland area, which could end up in the 8th District or the new 10th District.
“I think it's great voters will have a lot of choices,” Liias said of the crowded field.

Coming Home - An introduction to military culture, October 12

Coming Home, an introduction to military culture, Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 4:30 - 6pm, Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133.

The C.A.R.E. Team of the Northshore/Shoreline Community Network has been providing Cultural Competency events for several years, focusing on different ethnic cultures.  Recently, they decided that they needed to expand their view beyond ethnic culture.

With the recent focus on veterans and their needs,  the Team realized that a culture which represents a large portion of the population had been overlooked - the "military culture."

The Team has planned an event to remedy this, with their "Coming Home" session on October 12.

Scott Swaim, a veteran and mental health counselor who specializes in PTSD. will present information about military culture with the goal of helping service providers and educators develop new understanding and skills about what these veterans face as they return from war.  Participants will learn more about how to best work with veterans and their families.

The event is free of charge, but space is limited. Please make your reservations here.

Flags at half-staff on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 for Tacoma native

Washington State and United States flags at all Washington State agency facilities should be lowered to half-staff Tuesday, August 16, 2011, in memory of U. S. Army Sergeant Alexander J. Bennett of Tacoma, who died with 29 other service members August 6, in Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their helicopter crashed.

Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Tuesday, or first thing Wednesday morning, August 17.

Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition.

Alexander J. Bennett
AP Photo
(From the Associated Press), Spc. Alexander Bennett was from an Army reserve unit — Bravo Company, 7th Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment — based at New Century Air Center in Gardner, Kansas.

Specialist Alexander Bennett, 23, couldn't wait to deploy again after returning from spending a year in Iraq in 2009. So the reservist moved on his own from the Tacoma, Wash., area to Overland Park, Kan., to join Bravo Company.

"He wanted to be part of our unit when it deployed," said Lt. Col. Richard Sherman, former commander of Bennett's unit. "He was a typical young kid and liked to go out and have a good time with the guys."

Kenmore's Bastyr University to expand into California with new campus in San Diego

Bastyr University in Kenmore

Seattle-area Bastyr University announced August 12, 2011 that it will open a new campus in San Diego, CA, with plans for the first class to begin in Fall 2012.

"We are thrilled to secure a location for our California campus," said Bastyr University President Daniel K. Church, PhD. "To become the first regionally accredited naturopathic medical institution in California is a tremendous honor and we look forward to providing the same quality education as our Kenmore, Washington, campus does. Now students in California and throughout the southwest will not have to travel as far to receive a degree from the best University for natural medicine in the United States."

After many months of scouting, planning and research, the news comes as a welcome step forward in the future for Bastyr University, a pioneer in science-based natural medicine since 1978. San Diego was selected because of its strategic proximity to a significant number of prospective students, faculty and patients in Southern California who are interested in the natural health arts and sciences. The Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree program will be offered when the school first opens, with other degree programs expected to be offered in the future.

15th Avenue between NE 175th and 180th in North City will be closed at 7 pm so that jazz fans can make their way to a variety of venues, both indoors and out. In addition to the blue notes, improvisation, syncopation, swing, bebop, Latin and Cuban-African reverberations that will be heard along 15th NE, you won't want to miss the unique sounds of bands Sonando, Janette West Quartet, The Doug Reid Group, The Young Lizards, and the very talented Shoreline Jazz Camp Students and Faculty.

New this year is the salsa band Tumbao, which will be center stage in Shoreline — in the center of the street! Although guests are welcome to sit and listen, dancing is encouraged. Don’t know how to salsa dance? Instructor and salsa master Eduardo Aguirre will be on hand to help teach the basic steps.

Jazz lovers can dine at several of the venues throughout the evening, with food vendors also on hand and Rain City Rotary's beer garden open to the public. Attendees can pick up a CD from their favorite bands or artists at one convenient booth located in the center of all the action.

New playing field complex being constructed by Meridian Park Elementary

Saturday, August 13, 2011

The Shoreline School District began work this week on a new field complex adjacent to Meridian Park Elementary School.

The project will create three new fields: one for baseball, one for softball and a playfield for Meridian Park. The baseball and softball fields will become the home varsity fields for Shorewood High School next spring.

The baseball and softball fields at Shorewood have been removed in preparation for the construction of the new high school. The decision was made that since the construction at Shorewood would not allow a home field on its campus for several years, to create the new varsity fields at Meridian Park in time for the 2012 baseball and softball seasons.

The baseball and softball fields will be synthetic turf to maximize their usage in all kinds of weather. A quarter-mile walking path will be created around the baseball field for community use. The fields will be lighted and will have parking for more than 30 vehicles in addition to the nearby parking at Meridian Park Elementary and the Shoreline Children's Center.

A photo of the area as construction began last week.

The Meridian Park Elementary playfield will be natural grass with synthetic turf cutouts. This field will not be available for use until the 2012-13 school year. A portion of the Meridian Park playground will be closed in August to improve drainage and reopened in time for the opening of school in September.

The project is funded by 2006 bonds. These bonds approved by voters have previously funded improvements to playfields at Highland Terrace, Lake Forest Park and Syre Elementary Schools, and new synthetic turf fields at Einstein and Kellogg Middle Schools, Shorecrest High School and Shoreline Stadium.

Echo Lake streets are being resurfaced this weekend

On Thursday, the Doolittle Construction Company took advantage of the hot weather and began the first phase of work on Shoreline’s 2011 Bituminous Surface Treatment (BST) project in the Echo Lake neighborhood. (See previous article)

The first phase will take approximately four days to complete. The second phase will occur several days later and take a day or two to complete. The entire project is to be completed by August 20.

Paving work is weather dependent. The hotter the weather, the faster the new surface cures. In order to take advantage of the current run of summer weather, crews will work through the weekend.

On Saturday, August 13, crews will work from 8 am to 7 pm. in the area bounded by 5th Ave NE to Meridian Ave N and N 185th to N 205th Streets. (See map) On Sunday, August 14, the streets will be swept to pick up the excess rock on streets that were paved on Saturday.

1st Avenue NE will not be included in the work this weekend because of the Shoreline Classic Soccer Tournament. Work on 1st Avenue NE will occur next week.

The City advises residents that it is all right to drive immediately on the new surface, but it is important to drive slowly.

Residents have all been notified so they could move their vehicles from the street.

For questions or concerns about the paving work, call Tom Doolittle of the Doolittle Construction Company at 425-455-1150. To learn more about BST in Shoreline, visit this information page.

Photo: Two year anniversary of the Lake Ballinger fire

On July 29, 2009, the hottest day of a hot summer with a record 103º, a fire which had been smoldering in the peat island in the middle of Lake Ballinger burst into full flame, flaring up into a large fire that engulfed the entire island.

Clouds of acrid smoke filled the surrounding neighborhoods in the lake bowl.

A light North Northwest wind drove the ash plume over most of Echo Lake and through North City, raining ash on Shoreline and parts of Lake Forest Park.

The fire photograph was photographed on July 29th, 2009 at about 7:20pm.  Photo by Carl Dinse.

The 2011 photograph was photographed on August 10th, 2011 at about 7:00pm, just after the 2nd year anniversary of the fire. Photo by Carl Dinse.

Northeast Seattle Seniors Can Get a Ride to Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center

A new Senior Center Van has been added to service to both Northeast Seattle and Shoreline thanks to a King County METRO extension grant and New Freedom Funding.

The van will travel north/south rather than stopping at NE 145th. That means riders who live in the Lake City area can now request rides to the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center. Also, Shoreline seniors and people with disabilities can be taken to medical appointments at Northwest Hospital, Northgate Group Health, other Northgate medical facilities, even Northgate Mall!

Senior Center staff are delighted with the new van.
"Now more people have an opportunity to come to Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center for classes, services and meals. This service extension has been long hoped for and is now a reality. The Senior Center can now welcome those who live in the Lake City and Northgate areas via the new shuttle service."
Senior Services Transportation have tried to ensure that all of the Hyde Shuttles are available to at least one medical facility and there are not really any in Shoreline, so this new service is helpful.

The van is lift equipped and operates Monday to Friday 9AM to 4PM. Call 206-727-6262 to schedule a ride.

Single-candidate primary just part of overall election cost

By Evan Smith

Primary election ballots in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park and the rest of King County have a judicial election with a single candidate, but that adds little to the cost of the election.

King County elections spokeswoman Kim Van Eckstrom said Thursday that the cost of one item is just part of the overall cost of the election.

The primary adds significant cost to an election only if more voters have to get ballots.

In Snohomish County, where some meaningless two-person partisan primaries are on the ballot, elections manager Garth Fell said Thursday that election costs go up primarily with the number of ballots that the County must print, mail and count. So those elections add little or no cost if people get ballots anyway.

If there were places in King County where the single-candidate appeals court election was the only thing on the ballot, it would add significantly to the cost of the election. However, since the whole County will vote on the veterans and human services levy, every eligible voter in the County will get a ballot; so the single-candidate judicial primary will add little to the cost of the election.
