Gallery at Towne Centre features Michelle Bear and Chris Nielsen

The Gallery at Towne Centre presents "Form and Flight" Artwork by Michelle Bear and Chris Nielsen, May 17 – July 2, 2011

The Arts Council welcomes spring with two artists who like to work large and bold. Michelle Bears’ large mixed media drawings of birds against the gold and grey glazes of Chris Niesen’s three foot tall pots and large bowls will transform The Gallery at Towne Centre. The beauty of birds of prey and our delicate neighborhood birds is transposed against the clean lines and cool tones of ceramic vessels.

The new exhibit Form and Flight runs May 17 through July 2, 2011. As usual, the gallery also features a stunning array of locally crafted glass, pottery, jewelry, fine art and more. If you haven’t visited us in our new location what are you waiting for?

More on the Artists:

I might be called a naturalist artist. My particular responsibility is to portray the (natural) world of and around me. I believe we are here to notice each thing so each thing gets noticed. I attempt to be as observant as I can be. Sometimes I wonder what mark I will leave here myself; the grasses I have let grow or things left unsaid. Anyone who creates a deep map of place fears her images will detonate that place. And so I tread lightly.

I first studied ceramics with Claude Horan, founder of the ceramics department at the University of Hawaii. Though primarily an abstract-expressionist-influenced potter and sculptor, he grounded me in a fine sense of form and the arts-and-crafts philosophy of the English potter Bernard Leach. Since then I’ve worked to perfect an expression of classicism with functional pottery featuring simple designs and natural materials. Brushed slip, celadons, and iron and ash glazes have a muted quality that complement a clean, fine line – a swelling vase or a welcoming bowl.

The Gallery is located on the inside lower level of the Lake Forest Park Towne Centre, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155. Hours are 12-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 11-4 Sunday. Gallery phone - 206-588-8332.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture all of the arts in the community through programs and events, arts education, advocacy, and support for artists and arts organizations. Proceeds from the Gallery at Lake Forest Park Towne Centre help fund these programs and events.

For the birds: Sharp-shinned Hawk

Adult Sharp-shinned Hawk
By Christine Southwick
Tilting its short rounded wings and twisting its long tail, this small predator catches unwary birds, be they feeding on the ground in the forests or at a neighborhood bird feeder. The smallest of the Accipiter group, Sharp-shinned Hawks, so called because of their skinny legs with sharp shins, are able to navigate quietly and quickly through even dense forest, and when they spot a likely meal, overtake it with a burst of speed.

Ninety percent of their food is small birds, with the other percentage being small rodents, snakes, frogs, lizards, and larger insects.

The female can be twice as large as the male, and will capture the larger prey, usually up to a flicker or maybe even a small grouse, while the male will hunt sparrows, chickadees, maybe a hummingbird or two.

Juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk
Sharp-shinned hawks hide their 2-5 egg nests up high in a large conifer, or a dense group of trees to protect the nest from owls, larger hawks, and humans who hunt their prized multi-spotted eggs, or who shoot them, believing them to be the chicken-hunting Cooper’s Hawks.

Sharp-shinned Hawks are hard to tell from the slightly larger Cooper’s Hawk, and it doesn’t help that the female Sharpy can be as large as a male Cooper’s.

Sharp-shinned Hawks prefer coniferous or mixed forests, and will rarely be found out in the large open areas, except during migration.

The majority of Sharpys breed in the temperate boreal forests in Canada and migrate to southern US, Mexico, or Central America, but there is a resident population in the Northwest that breed in higher elevations, and then winter here in our area. Perhaps some are even breeding locally, but more study is needed, since their secretive ways make them difficult to locate during breeding season.

Juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk
Sharp-shinned hawks have a “Superman’s build”, being broad at the shoulders and narrow at the hips, with a square tail and long pencil-thin legs. Side view, their eyes appear to be centered between the front and back of their smallish head, and in flight the head barely extends past their wings. Their flight pattern is usually several quick strokes then a short glide. They have a square edge to their tail, a field mark that is helpful, but can be hard to judge since this is only obvious in perched birds.

Juvies have yellow eyes and are brown above, with chests of a diffuse brown; adults have red eyes, and have gray upper -parts and barred reddish chests.

If the birds at your feeder sound a quick alarm and scatter, look for a Sharp-shinned Hawk searching for a meal. This is an opportunity to watch the checks and balances of nature right in your own yard.

Christine Southwick is on the Board of the Puget Sound Bird Observatory and is their Winter Urban Color-banding Project Manager. She is a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat Steward, having completed their forty hour class. We're happy that she's sharing her expertise with us about the birds in our backyards.

Mayor McGlashan has mild heart attack

Updated: 5-17-2011 10pm

When Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan experienced chest pains on Tuesday, May 10, he did the sensible thing and called 911.

At the Northwest Hospital emergency center he registered no symptoms, but the cardiologist kept him overnight for monitoring. At 4:30 am, a slight elevation in cardiac enzymes indicated that he had, indeed, had a mild heart attack.

An angiogram found a small, blocked artery which is being treated with medication.

The Mayor has been home, experiencing symptoms only from the medication.

He missed the Monday council meeting, but reported on Tuesday that "I'm feeling great and actually getting quite bored with laying around, so ready to get back to my routine."

He will return to his day job on Thursday morning and ease back into his normal schedule.

Debbie Tarry selected as new Shoreline Assistant City Manager

From the Office of the City Manager
City Manager Julie Underwood has selected Debbie Tarry to be the City’s new Assistant City Manager.

Tarry’s selection is the culmination of an extensive search for a new Assistant City Manager after Underwood, the former assistant city manager, was appointed by the City Council to be the City Manager in February.

Tarry is the current Director of the newly created Administrative Services Department in Shoreline. Prior to being named Director of Administrative Services, Tarry served as the Finance Director for the past eleven years.

“Debbie is a proven leader within our organization,” stated Underwood. “She exemplifies the community and organization’s values, and her ability to perform during critical times is unmatched. She has just the right complement of skills that work well with mine.”

“It is such an honor to be selected for the Assistant City Manager position,” said Tarry. “Shoreline is a great community, and our elected officials and City staff are committed to providing excellent service to the community. I am very excited to continue contributing to Shoreline’s success and serving the Shoreline community in this new capacity.”

Debbie Tarry
Throughout her tenure at Shoreline, Tarry has been intimately involved in most of the critical decisions the City has faced over the past eleven years. Before coming to Shoreline, Tarry worked as the Finance Director for the City of Mill Creek and the Administrative Services Director for LINK Transit. Tarry has extensive experience working with other jurisdictions in the region.

Tarry has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration from Pacific Lutheran University. She is a member of the Washington Cities Insurance Authority Loss Control and Investment Committee and the Seattle City Light Review Panel. She also is a Former President of the Washington Finance Officers Association. Tarry is a resident of Lake Stevens where she lives with her husband. She has two grown daughters.

The City received over 100 applications for the position. Of those, 16 were chosen to go through an initial phone interview. From the results of those interviews, the City Manager chose the six finalists. The six finalists were then interviewed by three panels made up of community members, City staff and the City’s Leadership Team.

“I want to thank the members of the community panel and the staff panels that helped interview the finalists for this position,” stated Underwood. “We had an exceptional slate of finalists. It speaks volumes about where the City is today that so many highly qualified professionals were interested in working for the City of Shoreline.”
Tarry will start as Assistant City Manager effective immediately. She will serve as Interim Administrative Services Director until a replacement is found.

Rep. Marko Liias announces congressional exploratory committee

From the Marko Liias campaign committee

Edmonds Democrat is the first to announce for potential open seat in the 1st District

Rep. Marko Liias (D-Edmonds) became the first person to announce a congressional exploratory committee in the First Congressional District, currently held by Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Bainbridge Island). Liias announced the formation of his committee in an email to friends and supporters Tuesday morning.

"In the past few months, many people have asked me to consider running for Congress in the 1st District, in the event Congressman Inslee does not seek reelection. While there are many things left to sort through, I want to let you know I am seriously considering this possibility," wrote Rep. Liias.

Liias cited concerns about the new Republican majority in Congress as central reasons for exploring a candidacy. His message highlighted the need to send a "fresh, progressive voice to Congress".

"I have been dismayed and disappointed with what I see happening in our nation's capital. The best interests of the American people have been ignored as a Republican majority has pursued their ideological agenda with ruthlessness," he said.

With widespread speculation that incumbent Congressman Jay Inslee may not seek reelection in 2012, Liias noted a desire to start a "conversation" with voters and potential supporters now. Early members of the exploratory committee include Snohomish County Labor Council President Darrell Chapman, Rep. Derek Stanford (D-Bothell), and Snohomish County Councilwoman Stephanie Wright (D-Lynnwood). Other community leaders and elected officials will also help Rep. Liias make a decision on the race.

Liias did note that he does not expect to make a formal decision to enter the race or begin raising funds toward a campaign until Congressman Inslee "announces his own plans".

Rep. Marko Liias has served as a state representative from Snohomish County since 2008, and served on the Mukilteo City Council for two years prior to his appointment to the Legislature. He has established a reputation as an environmentalist and strong supporter of working families. In his 2010 reelection campaign for the State House, Liias had early support from the Washington State Labor Council, Sierra Club, and many other progressive organizations.

Good Eats: Pho Ha

By Sean Wheatley
For the last few years, Pho Ha has become a bit of an old standby for us. With always reliable soups with a variety of meat choices, this Aurora spot has become a classic. For a while our son Dylan had to have the beef soup (Pho Bac) with meatballs at least twice a week. I discovered the chicken variety (Pho Ga) to be an amazingly flavorful.

We also love getting the vermicelli noodles with the sweet and tangy sauce. Served cold, the beauty of this meal is the mix of pork (or chicken, but get the pork), fried spring roll, peanuts and veggies all among the noodles. I could eat this for days. Or nights. The place stays open until 11, which is a big bonus since there are so few places to eat later in the evening around these parts.

Photo: X-Band Radar vessel

Carl Dinse took this shot from Richmond Beach Saltwater Park May 10th of the Sea Based X-Band Radar (SBX) vessel (Missile Defense Radar), as it slowly cruised down Puget Sound on its way to Vigor (formerly Todd) Shipyards. In this photo it had just entered the Puget Sound at South Whidbey Island. (Hint: it's the one with the sphere.)

Driver chased by Shoreline police crosses the line and crashes in Edmonds

From our friends at MyEdmondsNews comes this explanation of why Shoreline residents in the NW section may have been awakened by emergency vehicles this morning.

A man allegedly driving drunk and being chased by Shoreline police crashed his small pickup truck into an Edmonds home early Tuesday morning. The suspect fled the truck after the crash but police found him hiding nearby and arrested him.

Suspect took out the mailboxes
The incident took place in the 10700 block of 244th Street Southwest at the King-Snohomish County line about 3:30 am.  244th SW is the other side of the street from NW 205th, marking the county line.

According to a King County Sheriff’s investigator at the scene, the suspect — who lives in the area — failed to negotiate a curve in the road and careened down a driveway where he took out some mailboxes and crashed into the home at the end of road.

The pursuit began near Gateway Plaza at N 182nd and Midvale and continued north, with the suspect crashing just over the county line.

A retired couple sleeping inside the home were uninjured and in fact weren’t aware of the crash until police told them, the sheriff’s investigator said.

Burke Gilman Trail detour a major topic at LFP council meeting

by Mark D. Goodwin

A city permit for the planned detour of the Burke Gilman Trail this spring received the most attention from the vocal citizens at Thursday’s (May 12) Lake Forest Park City Council meeting. Their concerns were numerous, namely for the safety of the trail users. The proposed detour route crosses Bothell Way (SR 522) and weaves through residential streets for over two miles. Stretches of the interim trail will be covered in materials unsuitable for street bikes (such as wood chips or gravel), according to citizen Jean Thomas.
“It’s not this city’s responsibility to find the least unsafe path through LFP,” Thomas said.
The fact remains the trail will need to be closed, and bike and foot traffic will have to be diverted while the trail undergoes repair. Members of the council promised to stay on top of the issue while seeking input from the community.

The future of the city’s website occupied the council for a sizable chunk of the evening. They are in the process of upgrading the site to better communicate and interact with the citizenry.

City attorneys and the soon-to-retire city web designer are negotiating a deal with a hosting company in Oklahoma to run the website. Before moving forward with the contract, Deputy Mayor Dwight Thompson wanted to ensure the website would be capable of taking electronic payment for utility bills, tickets or fines, and other fees. After learning the website would have such functionality, the council unanimously approved the deal.

There was also time set aside to honor eight area volunteers. The most prominent were the founders of the current Third Place Commons.

Anne Stadler met the building owner Ron Sher (also honored on Thursday) while in line at the Honey Bear Bakery in 1998. Shortly after, Stadler organized the Friends of Third Place Commons, a not-for-profit organization which manages the community center portion of the building. She has lived here since 1959, before Lake Forest Park actually existed.
“I really value living here,” Stadler said. “I felt like I could be a contributor to this place in whatever way I had passion for.”
Lastly, Jeffrey Weissman, who is co-owner of Great Harvest Bread, a Lake Forest Park Rotarian and community activist, was presented with two gifts. One was a plaque, which other volunteers received as well; the second was an honorary citizenship with the city of Lake Forest Park. Weissman was gracious in his brief speech, but had a suggestion for his fellow volunteers.
“It seems to me that all eight of us [volunteers], ought to get together and have words for all of you,” Weissman said as he gestured towards the council and mayor. There was laughter and nervous applause from the audience.
An approved parks-related measure now requires council consent for improvements to public spaces and trails. Art, benches, new plants and the like were examples cited. Both decisions on the non-competitive franchise deal with Comcast for high speed Internet access, as well as the finance committee report were postponed until next meeting.
