A busy Saturday, May 14, 2011

Saturday, May 14, 2011

Plenty to do today.

Today is Embrace Shoreline Schools. Every school in the Shoreline School district, plus Aldercrest Annex, will have a group of volunteers working on the school grounds. Most of the groups are starting around 9 or 10 and working until early afternoon.

You don't need to be a member of the PTA, Neighborhood Association, or the nearest church to volunteer. Just show up.

Volunteers will weed, some will plant, pick up litter, and do whatever else is necessary to make the school grounds look great.

Richmond Beach is pulling out all the stops for the Strawberry Festival. Bands, classic cars, art show, strawberry shortcake. It's a huge party, put on by the neighborhood association, and the City of Shoreline.

If you don't like gardening or strawberries, there's always drip irrigation and cat shows.

Here are the articles we have published about some of the weekend events:

Shoreline Caucus will host James Watkins on May 19 and Brian Sonntag on June 21

Friday, May 13, 2011

From the Shoreline Caucus
The Shoreline Caucus is gearing up for a new electoral season, and we’ve lined up some great speakers for our next meetings. So, please join us for some good conservative fellowship, great refreshments, and inspiring speakers at our upcoming meetings. Be sure to come at 6:30pm for conversation and refreshments before the meetings begin.

Thursday, May 19, 7 pm
James Watkins, candidate for the 1st Congressional District

As you know, James Watkins ran a very strong campaign against Jay Inslee in the last election. James has announced his candidacy for this seat in the 2012 election, and will be speaking this evening on how we can reach out to non-traditional Republican voters. James is a great speaker, so please come and show your support for his campaign to move this congressional seat to the conservative side of the aisle.

Tuesday, June 21, 7 pm
Brian Sonntag, Washington State Auditor

Some of us had the opportunity to hear Brian speak at the Push Forward conference a couple of months ago. Brian Sonntag is a funny, irreverent, engaging speaker, who probably has more anecdotes on the silliness in state government than anyone else. You’ll enjoy this evening – please come and hear Brian’s stories, and his thoughts on how to run a lean, efficient and effective state government. And, bring a friend – we guarantee they’ll have a great time.

Both meetings will be held at the Innis Arden Clubhouse, 1430 NW 188th, Shoreline, WA 98177.

Evan Smith: Correction and clarification on Shoreline Council candidates

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

A reader points out that when I wrote about Shoreline Councilwoman Doris McConnell’s registering as a candidate for re-election, I gave the wrong amounts raised and spent by candidate Jesse Salomon. (see article)

The reader said correctly that Salomon has reported raising $20,410 and spending $7,105.
Apparently, the higher figures that I listed were for a candidate in Spokane, the city listed right after Shoreline on the Public Disclosure Commission web site.

Another reader said that I was wrong to say that many of Salomon’s contributions had come from active 32nd Legislative District Democrats. I made that statement because I noticed among Salomon’s contributors the names of Corey Murata, a former editor of the District Democrats’ newsletter, and Elaine Phelps, who has been a Democratic precinct committee officer and frequent supporter of candidates that the District Democratic organization has promoted for both partisan and non-partisan offices.

Although the reader correctly notes that Washington has no official lists of party affiliation, both Murata and Phelps certainly have been active in the 32nd District Democratic organization. The PDC web site also lists Phelps’ husband, Robert as a contributor to Salomon’s campaign.

The organization has endorsed Salomon and incumbent Chris Eggen for City Council and candidates for the non-partisan offices of County assessor and Seattle Port commissioner. The organization frequently has endorsed candidates for non-partisan offices as other Democratic and Republican organizations often do.

A third reader questioned my statement, "The District Democrats also have endorsed Eggen as they did four years ago, when he defeated former Councilman Paul Grace to replace then-Councilman Rich Gustafson."

It’s confusing but true. Grace was a former councilman because he had held a Council position by appointment from 2003 to 2005, when he lost to Janet Way in a bid for a full term. Grace sought to replace Gustafson, when Gustafson declined to run for re-election in 2007, but Eggen defeated then-former Councilman Grace for the position that then-Councilman Gustafson had held.

Bottle Bombs in Shoreline

According to the King County Sheriff's office and Shoreline Police, several “bottle bombs” were found in Shoreline during the last month. Some exploded but there were no injuries and limited damage.

They are made using ordinary plastic pop bottles. They are partially filled with liquid and may contain aluminum foil.

The first was on April 18 in the 19300 block of 25th Ave NW about 10:45 PM. Four plastic pop bottles were found, three on the front porch and one on the shoulder in front of the house. One of the bottles in the porch had apparently burned.

The second incident was on April 19 about 11:15 AM in the 20100 block of 17th Ave NW. The owner found several pop bottles bombs around his fence and on his front porch. At least a couple had either explored or burned.

The last reported incident was on April 23 about 10:30 PM in the 18500 block of 3rd Ave NW. Five “exploded” bottles were thrown from a passing car towards a house at that location.

A suspect vehicle was located after the most recent incident and an 18 year-old was taken into custody, although at this point no charges have been filed. More arrests are likely.

“Pop bottle bombs” are very dangerous because they involve acid and explosions. If you find one, the police advise strongly that you leave it alone and call 911 immediately. The Bomb Disposal Unit is handling the investigation.

Call 911 if you have any information about who is making, placing, and throwing these devices.

Countywide Community Forum Comes to SCC Tuesday, May 17

Countywide Community Forum, the effort that gathers citizens’ opinions on community issues and then delivers the results to elected officials, is coming to Shoreline.

John Spady, the lead organizer of Countywide Community Forums, will be at Shoreline Community College from 1-2:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, in Room 9208 of the PUB student union building. So far, this event is the only forum scheduled in North King County.

After a 20-minute video overview of issues facing King County, small group discussions and a survey seeking answers to questions such as:

  • What is needed in our community to provide more access to opportunities for success?
  • Is it education, affordable housing, or jobs?
  • What is the job of government and what isn’t the job of government?
  • How can we expand opportunities for success and economic growth in King County?

Spady is Executive Vice-President and Director of Research for the Forum Foundation. His father, Dick Spady, is the owner of the Dick’s Drive-In restaurants and has been a strong proponent of citizen engagement and dialogue for decades. Dick Spady’s funding support has been key to keeping the Countywide Community Forum moving ahead over the past three years.

The event is open to the public and all survey results will be tabulated by the King County Auditor and presented to the King County Council.

Host for the event is Shoreline Community College faculty member Elizabeth Hanson, who this past summer took part in the Countywide Community Forum on juvenile justice.
“Our group met with King County representatives and some police and judges. It was a very good experience. We really felt listened to and I think we were,” Hanson said. “I think people need to feel like they personally can share their opinions and that their opinion matters.”
For more information contact Hanson or go to the website.
