Former Seahawk Brian Russell guest golfer at Wonderland event May 14

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Wonderland Developmental Center, a Shoreline based nonprofit that provides services for infants and toddlers with disabilities, and their families, reports it is currently serving 108 clients.

This is the largest number served in the organization’s 42 year history of serving families in north King and South Snohomish Counties.

The rise in need places more importance on the success of Wonderland fundraising events, such as the upcoming golf tournament, dinner and auction this Saturday, May 14, at the Golf Club at Newcastle.

Now in its 12th year, the Justin Van Hollebeke Memorial Golf Tournament, Dinner and Auction is an opportunity for golfers and non-golfers to have fun and raise money for the organization in the process.

This year Wonderland is pleased to announce the participation as a guest golfer of former Seattle Seahawk Safety Brian Russell. In addition to other activities, Russell will be challenging other golfers to a putting contest.

The event will include a variety of golf related activities in addition to eighteen holes of play at the nationally recognized Golf Club at Newcastle. Registered golfers will also receive a one-year membership to “boxgroove.com,” a company that provides off-hour golfing at premium courses across the country.

Non-golfers can also enjoy a post tournament cocktail hour, auction and gourmet dinner, all with a breathtaking view of the Seattle area from the heights on which the links are located. Information on the day’s events can be obtained by calling Wonderland at 206-364-3777 or by visiting the website.

Evan Smith: Shoreline Councilwoman Doris McConnell registers candidacy with state Public Disclosure Commission

Update:  see related article

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews politics writer

Shoreline City Councilwoman Doris McConnell registered her candidacy for re-election with the state Public disclosure commission May 2, a step that allows her to raise and spend money for the August 16 primary and November 8 general election

McConnell had announced her candidacy April 29.

McConnell won election four years ago by defeating then-Councilwoman Maggie Fimia.

McConnell is one of the three Shoreline Council members whose terms expire this year. Councilman Chris Eggen also has announced that he would run for reelection. No challengers have announced to run against either Eggen or McConnell,

Councilman Terry Scott has announced that he would not seek a second term. Former Shoreline Planning Commissioner Robin McClelland and attorney Jesse Salomon have registered with the PDC as candidates for the position that Scott now holds.

Candidates file for ballot positions June 6-10. Positions with three or more candidates appear on the August primary ballot. Positions with only one or two candidates appear only on the November ballot.

While Eggen, McClelland and McConnell have yet to report any money raised or spent, Salomon has reported raising $36,864, most of it from relatives or from active 32nd Legislative District Democrats, members of a group that has endorsed his candidacy, and spending $18,231.

The District Democrats also have endorsed Eggen as they did four years ago, when he defeated former Councilman Paul Grace to replace then-Councilman Rich Gustafson.

Sorcha Connor-Boyle from Shorewood High School will attend Gonzaga University where she will study to become an elementary school teacher. At school she has been involved in numerous activities, including band, choir, drama productions, and a reporter and editor-in-chief for the Kolus, the school newspaper. Outside of school he has volunteered at his former elementary school helping with the sixth grade Math Olympia program and tutoring students. The summer after his sophomore he taught underprivileged children at the Yesler Terrace Community Center. His success in teaching the children firmed up his goal to become a teacher. He will enter UW as a sophomore because of his Running Start and AP classes.

Colleen Hill from Lynnwood High School will attend Western Washington University with a goal of a degree in Special Education. At school she served as ASB Treasurer for two years and ASB President this year, and participated in varsity soccer and track. Academically she has an almost perfect grade point average and is in the top ten in her senior class.

Vincent Pham from Woodinville High School will attend the University of Washington with a gal of teaching high school English or History. He has excelled while taking AP courses and Running Start courses. He has been active in drama, Link Crew, Political Club, and varsity wrestling. His volunteer work included being a T-Ball baseball coach and working at the information desk at Evergreen Hospital.

SKSR represents retired and active school employees in Shoreline, Edmonds, and Northshore School Districts. This year the organization will be disbursing over $15,000 in scholarship awards to current high school students and continuing college students.

Six Finalists Selected for City of Shoreline Assistant City Manager Position

The Shoreline City Manager has selected six finalists to move to the final round of interviews for the assistant city manager position. City Manager Julie Underwood held the position before the City Council appointed her City Manager in January of this year.

The six finalists are: Charlie Bush, City Administrator for the City of Prosser; Christine Butterfield, Community Development Director for the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; David Cline, City Administrator for the City of Lake Forest Park; David Ellis, Assistant to the County Executive for Fairfax County, Virginia; Michael Sauerwein, Director of Administrative Services for the City of Sammamish; and Debbie Tarry, Director of Administrative Services for the City of Shoreline.

The Assistant City Manager reports directly to the City Manager and is a key member of the City’s Leadership Team, which is comprised of department directors. The Assistant provides assistance and support to the City Manager in the day to day operations of the City and serves as “acting” in the Manager’s absence.

The City received over 100 applications for the position. Of those, 16 were chosen to go through an initial phone interview. From the results of those interviews, the City Manager chose the six finalists.

The final interviews will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, May 11-12. Candidates will be interviewed by three separate panels made up of staff, the City’s Leadership Team and community members. In addition, the City Manager will meet individually with each candidate.

The community panel includes Rick Ashleman, Gloria Bryce, Tonya Drake, Marcia Harris, Carolyn Hope, Judy Parsons and Arthur Peach.

City Manager Julie Underwood states, “This is a key leadership position in the City. I am hopeful this process results in identifying an assistant city manager that will be an exceptional fit for our organization and community. A captivating climb for local teen

Lake Forest Park-based band Verlee for Ransom releases their CD on May 20The band includes Kaye Gill, bass; Nathan Keiffer, drums; Kyle Morrison, lead guitar and cello; Rio Chanae, keys and backup vocals; Keira Verlee, keys, guitar, lead singer, composer.

By Mark D Goodwin
Verlee for Ransom
Putting together an album and promotional tour can be a challenge for any musician. The Lake Forest Park-based Keira Verlee just finished recording her second full-length CD (“Happy Like Monkey that Climb”) with eclectic new band Verlee for Ransom, and is booked for the entire summer. On Friday, May 20, they will be playing the Q Café in Interbay to debut their first record as a band.

While Verlee may make it seem all too easy at the age of 17, she has more than enough to keep her busy aside from intelligent songwriting, fronting a band and playing multiple instruments. A junior at Shorecrest High School, she is also working towards a music transfer degree at Shoreline Community College via the Running Start program. She is surprisingly able to make time for her hobbies scuba diving and snowboarding, as well as a part-time job. This daunting schedule isn’t too much for her to handle, however.

Keira Verlee. Photo by Bridget Christian.
“Last quarter I had finals, and I had a show on one of my final’s nights - that was a little intense,” Verlee said. “But as long as I balance it out right and get my stuff done, it’s really not too bad.”

She and her band-mates may be young, (none of the five are past 20) but combined they have decades of musical experience. And it shows in the quality of their music. Their nine-track seminal work is as polished and professional as anything you might hear on the radio, but good luck trying to categorize it into any one genre.
Band photo by Bridget Christian
“We like the fact that we can’t be pigeon-holed,” keys player and backup vocalist Rio Chanae (pronounced Shuh-nay) said with a devil-may-care smile. “It’s like we’re all elusive, it makes us seem magical.”

The official Verlee for Ransom website describes their style as “indie alt-pop music from Seattle.”

Whatever that might mean to you, it certainly includes styling influenced by: jazz, rock, ska, lounge, classical (the guitarist also plays cello on the album), latin, blues, funk, folk, country, and, believe it or not, doo wop. Yet the tone stays consistent and never becomes a confused mess. Even the song “More of a Mess,” which possibly straddles the most genres on the record, is tight and controlled while playfully verging on unhinged the whole time.

Keira at the Keys. Photo by Jeremy Wheeler.
The band was featured as “Band of the Week” in The Stranger this February. Chris West, writer for international music review magazine Skope, used terms like “raw talent” and “Julliard-bound wunderlings” in his opinion on the album.

Band manager Guy Fusman has had prior experience with the independent music scene of Washington. He has managed bands in the past and ran an independent record label in the ‘90s called Mysophobic Records. When asked about rushing into a record deal, he said while gesturing toward a whiteboard full of bookings:

“So far [the band] has been doing just fine on their own. I’d like to see how far we get as an independent first.”

If and when Verlee and her band make it big, they wouldn’t be the first band with Lake Forest Park beginnings to do so. Recently, The Head and the Heart (singer and violinist Charity Rose Thielen is a graduate of Shorecrest) appeared on “Conan,” and now have a headlining tour which is rapidly selling out. This time last year, they were exactly where Verlee for Ransom is now.

The band will be playing all over the state this summer, as well a possible trip to LA at the end of July. Their show on May 20 will be at 7:30 pm in the Q Café, 3223 15th Ave W, in Interbay between Magnolia and Queen Anne. Tickets are $8, and CDs as well as merchandise will be sold. If you can’t make it to the show, the album will be available on iTunes and the Amazon marketplace shortly after.

For more information, visit the band's website.

FOUND: Sex offender missing from Snohomish county

UPDATE 5-9-2011  Snohomish County Sheriff's Office informs us that Chuck Johnson has been located.

Regarding Friday’s request for information concerning the whereabouts of Level 3 sex offender Charles Lee Johnson:

Our office just learned Charles Lee Johnson died March 19 in Tillamook, Oregon. We don’t have any other information regarding the circumstances of his death, nor do we know how long he had been in Oregon before he died.

Thank you all for getting his photo and information out there. We received a tip from a caller on our tip line that he had died and we verified it.

--Snohomish County Sheriff's Office
----------------------------------
Original story:

From our friends in Snohomish County (MyEdmondsNews.com, MLTNews.com, LynnwoodToday.com) comes this story about a missing sex offender.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in finding a Level 3 sex offender who has failed to register.

Chuck Johnson, 74
Charles Lee Johnson (aka Chuck Johnson) has a $50,000 warrant for his arrest. Detectives are asking anyone who might know his whereabouts to call the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 425-388-3845.

Johnson is a Level 3 sex offender but he is not under any supervision. His failure to register warrant stems from the fact that he is homeless and therefore required to register with the Sheriff’s Office. Johnson has been missing for a few months. Detectives have checked all the places where he was known to stay or visit, but there is no sign of him.

Johnson is described as a 74-year-old white male with gray hair and blue eyes. He is 5 feet 8 inches tall and approximately 182 lbs.
In 1993 he was convicted of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes stemming from an incident involving a 2-year-old girl whose mother allowed her to go berry picking with Johnson. He was convicted of indecent liberties in 1984.

After serving his time for the 1993 conviction, Johnson was admitted to the Special Commitment Center in 1998, where he stayed until his release in June 2010.
