Haggen Food and Pharmacy customer, employee and corporate contributions to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society are over $83,000 this year after results from April’s Walk MS were tallied.

Haggen Food and Pharmacy and its sister TOP Food and Drug stores were presenting sponsors of Walk MS, which was conducted by the MS Society’s Greater Northwest Chapter on April 2-3 at eight sites through Washington. To spur awareness and contributions, Haggen and TOP Food stores offered paper MS Feet for $1 apiece at checkout stands March 2-15. Stores also sold reusable bags and other products that were designated for Walk MS and many Haggen employees raised funds by participating in Walk MS.

The MS Society’s Greater Northwest Chapter serves more than 12,000 people living with MS in Western and Central Washington, Montana and Alaska, plus 72,000 others, including friends, caregivers and healthcare professionals. Walk MS donations also fund research to find a cause and cure for the disease.

“The MS Society fundraisers have been a companywide effort since 2004 since our employees and customers have connections to many families affected by multiple sclerosis,” said Haggen spokesperson Becky Skaggs. “Thanks to all who supported our efforts by buying MS Feet or pledging donations to employees participating in Walk MS.”

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another.

Haggen, Inc. operates 29 stores in Washington and Oregon under the Haggen Food and Pharmacy and TOP Food and Drug names. Headquartered in Bellingham, it is the largest independent grocer based in the State of Washington.

Planning continues for construction closure of the Burke-Gilman Trail

from City of Lake Forest Park *electronic town crier

As of the end of April, King County still had not selected a contractor to begin the construction on the redevelopment of the Burke Gilman Trail. However, once construction starts, King County will need to close the trail while work is going on. In order to allow non-motorized travelers to continue to move through the City, King County has proposed a detour.

King County explored several options for a detour. The objectives for the detour were to maintain the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and cars on public streets and to select a route that was likely to be used by trail riders. Earlier this year King County met with the City Council to look at alternative routes including over routing bikes through Kenmore and the Uplake neighborhood and then through NE 178th Street, through Sheridan Heights and then back to the trail. The other alternative was along the water.

In order to begin the detour, the County needed three permits, a right of way permit, a shoreline substantial development exemption and a sensitive areas permit. The sensitive areas permit requires notification and provides for a comment period.

At the end of the comment period the City staff will review the comments and determine whether or not the permit can be issued and the conditions to apply to the permit.

The comment period on this application which originally ended on April 29, 2011 is extended an additional 10 days to May 10, 2011, due to new information that has been added to application file. The City will not issue permits until the comment period has ended.

King County is planning to host two informational meetings for the residents of the area when the detour route is proposed and there is specific information about the timeline for construction. The City continues to work with King County on safe alternatives.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: "Blackout" and "All Clear" by Connie Willis

by Aarene Storms, youth services librarian, KCLS Richmond Beach

Blackout by Connie Willis
All Clear by Connie Willis
audiobook editions read by Katherine Kellgren

The historians at Oxford in 2060 can time-travel to the times and locations of important historical events. The technology isn't perfect, but forty years of travelling through history has streamlined a lot of procedures so that historians cannot change history.

That's the theory, anyhow.

Polly, Mike, and Eileen are working independently on historical research assignments during WWII. Polly is studying shopgirls in London during the Blitz. Mike wants to observe heroism at the evacuation of Dunkirk. Eileen poses as a maid in a country manor to see the effects of the children's evacuation. All three become closely involved with their subjects...and each notices some glitches in their time-travel drops. Have they inadvertently changed history and created a paradox in which the time-travellers from 2060 don't even exist?

Blackout ends abruptly, and the action is picked up immediately in All Clear, the second part of this "double-decker novel". (The author notes that the two volumes are really a single book which the publisher released in two parts).

In All Clear, the reader learns that the glitches with the time-travel drops are worse than previoiusly known: not only will malfunctioning drops not open to allow historians to return home to the year 2060, the drops won't even allow the people in 2060 to travel back in time to share information or supplies with the people who are stranded in the past.

With bombs dropping overhead and a deadline approaching, the Oxford historians are desperate to find a way home. The characters from the future and the past are riveting, the history is deeply and flawlessly researched, and the action will keep readers glued to the book.

No sex, minimal cussing. There is, however, plenty of bloodshed--tactfully described whenever possible--relating to the casualties of war and bombing attacks on British cities and towns during the war. In reading these books, I learned more than I knew there was to know about English life in the 1940's, and I found it absolutely fascinating.

If you are seeking a story as hypnotic as The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I recommend that you open up a copy of Blackout and All Clear.

For an extra treat, check out the audiobook edition of Blackout and All Clear, read by award-winner Katherine Kellgren, available from the library on CD and downloadable audio.
The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern

The Lady Dolphin Softball Team won 4 our 6 games during week, sweeping doubleheaders from Olympic College and Edmonds Community College but the SCC squad found themselves on the wrong side of swept against the NWAACC #1 ranked team in Bellevue.

Shoreline defeated Olympic College 5-1, 10-2 on Tuesday, April 26 at Shoreview Park. Then the Lady Dolphins defeated Edmonds on Friday, April 29, 22-1 and 13-1 at Shoreview as well.

On Sunday, May 1, the SCC squad faced the powerful Bellevue squad on their home field of Shoreview Park and stayed with the Lady Bulldogs in both games during the early innings but the Bellevue bats proved to be too potent as BC hammered 5 homeruns in the doubleheader and pulled away from Shoreline in both games. The final scores were 12-2 and 10-2.

Shoreline is now 12-12-1 for the season and 12-6 in the NWAACC Northern Region. SCC is in second place in the region with 6 games left and should qualify for the NWAACC Softball Championship for the 4th straight year. Bellevue is 27-1 overall and 16-0 in the region.
