Disaster in Japan
Students at Shoreline Community College are raising money to help the people of Japan affected by the tsunami and earthquake(s) of last month.

Members of the college’s Indonesian Fellowship Club have worked hard to plan and coordinate fund raising efforts as well as recruit volunteers to work at donation booths both on and off campus.

THIS WEEKEND (April 8 – 9)
DONATION BOOTHS OFF CAMPUS
More than 40 SCC students will be volunteering their time working at donation booths at different locations throughout the Seattle area. Only cash donations can be accepted.

Locations

NEXT WEEK (APRIL 11-15)
DONATION BOOTHS ON CAMPUS (10:30am – 1:30pm) and SLIDE SHOW

Volunteers will be accepting cash donations in the PUB (Bldg. 9000) near the main entrance to the college all next week from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30p.m. A slide show with images of the impact of the tsunami and earthquakes will be shown in the Main Dining Room of the PUB on 10-minute intervals.

Money raised will be donated to the Japan Red Cross via an account with the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. Donations will be distributed to those in need by the governor of the Miyagi Prefecture (where the most damage was done).

Their Facebook page is SCC Japanese Earthquake Support.

Shoreline donor and designers decorate Benaroya Hall for the Ten Grands concert

Benaroya Hall was decorated with roses from a Shoreline donor.
The “Ten Grands” Seattle concert is held annually to raise funds for The Snowman Foundation. The concert features ten grand pianos and ten talented musicians, all on the dramatically lit and decorated stage at Benaroya Hall. The program includes classical, jazz, blues, boogie woogie and pop pieces, with musicians playing as soloists and in various combinations.

Proceeds benefit The Snowman Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization established in Portland, Oregon in 1999 in response to budget cuts affecting K-12 and community-based music programs.

Fourteen Puget Sound-area groups received grants from proceeds from the Seattle concert last year. “Ten Grands” concerts are also held in Portland, with proceeds distributed to groups in that region.

Each year there is a competition to identify talented young pianists. Cosponsored by KING FM and RBC Wealth Management, the finalists play in the concert, with the winner playing a solo. A Lake Forest Park girl was a finalist in last year's competition. (see story

Designers Judy Allen, Merike Muld, Sharon Snapper, Diane Haveman
This year, an anonymous Shoreline donor donated 192 dozen roses to decorate the stage for the concert. A team of four designers, including Shoreline resident Judy Allen, and Merike Muld, Sharon Snapper and Diane Haveman, used the 2300 blooms to fill the Benaroya stage with bouquets for the Friday night concert.

ROTC soldiers place the roses on veterans' graves
On Saturday morning, the roses were delivered to Evergreen Washelli Cemetery on Aurora, where a troop of Army ROTC soldiers from Seattle University placed them on Veterans' graves.

Not too late to donate to Prom Shop clothing drive

Friday, April 8, 2011

Prom Shop
4/11/2011 2:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Richmond Highlands Recreation Center
16554 Fremont Avenue N
Shoreline, Washington 98133

The latest information, including contact info for last minute donations this weekend, comes from the Shorewood PTA Family Service chairs:

Shoreline PTSA Council, Shorewood and Shorecrest schools and the City of Shoreline are all partnering in a Prom Night Clothing Drive. We are currently asking for gently used Prom attire to be donated by this weekend, and the shopping event will be at the Shoreline Rec Center on Monday, April 11, at 2:30pm.

If you know a student who would be interested, please contact Shoreline Recreation at 206-801-2600, or just show up.

We are in need of Prom Dresses, dress shoes, handbags, and jewelry for the young ladies, and for the young men we need dress suits or tuxedos, slacks and dress shirts, nice shoes, bow or regular ties.

This is the first time we have done this type of event, and are hopeful that we can continue to provide this type of support to the community, including HOMECOMING in the Fall...(so keep that in mind as well, as we will probably hold another drive late summer or early fall).

If you do have any items to donate, due to the time restraints, please call Kristi Cohen at 206-546-9413 or Becky Golden 206-542-6087.

Thanks so much for your help with this special event!

Duke Dungan and Ken Mohn honored for Outstanding Service to the Needy

Duke Dungan receiving award
Duke Dungan of Lake Forest Park and Ken Mohn of Shoreline received Outstanding Service awards from the St. Vincent de Paul Society at the Council's Appreciation Dinner on Sunday, March 27. The event, held at Kennedy High School in Burien, celebrated the special people who make home visits and run programs to assist neighbors in need.

Each received the St. Vincent de Paul “Least of My Brethren” Award for outstanding service to the needy, along with five other honorees in King County. The Least of My Brethren Award is taken from the biblical passage of Matthew 25:40 where Christ says “Whatever you did it to one of the least of by brethren (Feed the Hungry, Clothe the Naked, Visit those in prison) you did it to me.”

Duke Dungan is a Lake Forest Park resident and member of St. Mark Catholic Parish.
Ken Mohn is a Shoreline resident and member of St. Luke Catholic Parish.

Both men have made home visits to help neighbors in need, preventing eviction, hunger, and utility shut-off.  Each has helped build a strong group in their parish to work with the poor and disadvantaged, and shown great empathy in reaching out to those who have been neglected or hurt.

For 30 years Dungan has served the poor as a member of the St. Vincent de Paul all-volunteer group at St. Mark Parish in Shoreline.  In addition, he has served in leadership of the group including president and treasurer among his many positions.  In St. Mark Parish he has been referred to as the face of St. Vincent de Paul.

For many years Mohn has served the poor as a member of the St. Vincent de Paul all-volunteer group at St. Luke Parish.  He has served in leadership of the group as a president and co-president. Ken continues to do extra tasks for the all-volunteer St. Vincent de Paul outreach, and is in charge of the "Helping Hands" packets, which St. Luke parishioners give to street people in need of a hot meal, clothing, and bus passes.

About the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle/King County
St. Vincent de Paul is known for its home visits to the poor, community thrift stores, case management programs, and food and meal programs which provide more than 1.6 million meals annually. More than 34,000 home visits and other contacts were made in King County to help 68,000 people this past year. St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores recycle more than 4000 tons of materials annually. More than 121,000 hours of volunteer service annually are given by generous people like Mohn and Dungan. Total calls answered for help in Seattle/King County were 52,150 in 2010—up 58% over 2008

The Catholic lay-run charity, which helps neighbors in need regardless of creed, assists the needy in 142 countries. In Seattle and King County, the Community Information Line (211) refers more people to St. Vincent de Paul than any other charity for basic needs assistance.

Shoreline’s Fire Chief Joins Global Impact on Mission to Tanzania

Fire Chief Mark Bunje.
Shoreline’s Fire Chief, Mark Bunje, is taking his experience and knowledge in public health and safety to another part of the world for two weeks this fall. He plans to join the Global Impact Tanzania Project as a volunteer, and is urging others to consider being part of this humanitarian effort as well. He will work alongside students and faculty from the Seattle Community College District, the sponsors of the program, healthcare practitioners and other community members – who are committing themselves to service as part of their education and commitment to lifelong learning.

Bunje became Fire Chief in 2010, after 25 years with Shoreline Fire Department. “After many years of service in my own communities, I have a strong desire to reach out and assist people in a global effort,” Bunje says. “I support Global Impact’s focus on clean water, basic medical care and sustainable food production technology around the world. I want to put my skills to use with hands-on, practical help and personal contact with people from other cultures who need this assistance.”

Global Impact’s Tanzania Project needs volunteers who can assist in local hospitals and orphanages, where AIDS has taken a huge toll. Others may work with local farmers on sustainable farming techniques, or with local populations on providing safe drinking water.

Chief Bunje is a perfect example of the ideal volunteer, according to Global Impact recruiters. He has a background in firefighting, rescue, emergency medicine, industrial technology and marine engineering. He was also a general contractor for over 20 years. But his most important attribute? His desire to help and make a difference in the world. Global Impact volunteers are needed in so many areas that everyone has a skill or knowledge they can contribute. Bunje says he plans to join other trips in the years to come: to Peru, Vietnam and India.

Global Impact is Seattle Community College District students, faculty and staff, partnering with Seattle-area medical, educational and service-oriented community organizations to deliver health care and volunteer service in developing countries.  Global Impact volunteers make a real difference in the lives of people in developing countries. In return, the lives of volunteers are enriched by the simple act of serving others — and learning to see the world from a different perspective. This experience is life-changing.

Shoreline Park 'n Ride - other options

Metro bus
Using the Shoreline Park 'n Ride at N 192nd and Aurora Ave N is pretty challenging during the Aurora Corridor construction. If you are getting frustrated trying to get in and out of the site, you might want to try some of the other park 'n rides in the area.

Here is the advice from the City website:

Construction activities will occur near the Shoreline Park and Ride through early 2012. Temporary bus stops, pedestrian access and parking stalls are in place and the City of Shoreline is working with Metro to ensure there is safe access to buses during construction.

Routes serving this park and ride lot include the MT 301, 303, 342, 358, and 373.

Many of these routes serve other park and ride lots in Shoreline, including the Aurora Village Transit Center, the Korean Zion Presbyterian Church (17920 Meridian Ave N), the Aurora Church of the Nazarene (1900 N 175th Street) and the Park and Ride at Jackson Park. Please visit the King County Metro website for more information about bus schedules and using local park and ride lots.
