Dance It! brings back the swing in dancing

Big Band Swing Dance on January 29, at SC with dance lessons available from Dance It!

Alex and Allie probably had more than one lesson at Shorewood.

Dance It! is a Seattle-based non-profit program that provides free social dance lessons to local high school students. The program is dedicated to inspiring teenagers to social dance and offers a fun learning experience.

This is more like it. And one and two and ....
Dance It! began as a one-time program for students at Shorewood High School in 2006. Shorewood participants learned the basic elements of swing dancing in four fun-filled weeks, and as you can see by the photos, some advanced moves, too.

The goal of the program is to incorporate dance for teenagers to improve overall fitness, enhance social skills, and expose them to the arts and culture of a new kind of music.

See how much fun you can have?
“Our class focus is on lifelong fitness … lifetime activities that the students learn and enjoy for the rest of their adult lives. We have had an increased interest in the Swing Club and in dancing in general due to your generous contributions to our club and classroom activities. The Seniors have really enjoyed the experience.”- Shorewood PE staff

The free program was held after-school. Four swing dance lessons taught by two professional dancers, Mark Kihara and Darla Weideman, with no partner or experience necessary to participate.

“Learning to swing dance was a great life decision. Not only has it turned into a source for entertainment, but it has been great exercise and has provided fantastic social opportunities and it was the Dance It program that made this possible…”- Chase, age 18

Dance It! makes the experience possible for local high school students by bringing the program directly to them, at their school.

Some participating schools in the area for 2011 include: Shorewood, Shorecrest, Edmonds-Woodway, and Mountlake Terrace.

Chase and Katy at Shorewood class.
Dance It! will return to Shorecrest High School in February for a 12 hour series of salsa lessons during PE. These classes are being funded by a grant from the Shoreline Arts Foundation. They also taught at Shorewood this past fall for SW’s senior lifetime sports class and big band dance.

Alex and Allie
This weekend, Shorecrest’s Big Band Swing Dance presents an evening of live jazz and swing dance fun on Saturday, January 29 from 7:30-10:00 p.m in the school cafeteria. Music will be performed by the Kellogg Middle School Jazz Band and Shorecrest High School Jazz and Stage Bands. The funds raised at this event will go to help support SC and Kellogg Jazz programs.

Mark and Lizzy - these are the pros.
The event will include swing dance lessons with Mark Kihara and Darla Weideman of Dance It! from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for an additional $5.

Mark Kihara is a passionate and energetic swing dancer. He has been dancing for Dance It! since 2007. See more info on Mark here.

Darla Weideman is a award-winning Lindy Hopper, who has performed with Sister Kate and Jackson Street Lindy Hoppers. Lindy also teaches at the Century Ballroom, and joined Dance It! in 2010.

Tickets prices: $12.00 in advance/$15 at the door. Students $6.00 with ASB, $8.00 without. Shorecrest is located at 15353 25th AVE NE. For ticket info call SC @ 206-393-4286

Sorry - no radioactive spiders here

According to Melanie Granfors at Shoreline Fire, a worker at the Shoreline Transfer Station thought his load contained a piece of radioactive metal. He returned to the Transfer Station, closely followed by news agencies, including a helicopter.

They were apparently disappointed to find that the transfer station would not start glowing or producing radioactive wildlife.

As a precaution, the metal will be disposed of as "hazardous waste" on Monday.

Be warned: new traffic cameras in Lake Forest Park

Traffic Safety Camera Installed in School Zone on 40th Place NE

Traffic and speeding vehicles are a major concern in Lake Forest Park. Neighborhood complaints about speeders and cut-through traffic continue to be the top concerns of citizens. The City has installed two traffic cameras in school zones. The results of the cameras have been a significant reduction in the speed of traffic in the City.

The traffic safety cameras have been placed in school zones. On 40th Place NE, students walk to and from school walk. There is a school route through NE 186th Street to Lake Forest Park Elementary school. In the existing school zone, on 40th Place NE, the City has had a flashing light to warn drivers that they are in a school zone and to encourage drivers to reduce speeds. However, a recent evaluation of the number and speed of drivers indicates over 400 cars a week continue to speed during the times when children are most likely to be present.

The Council authorized the placement of an additional traffic safety camera in December. The neighbors have been notified about the camera. During December, some of the electrical work was completed for the installation of the cameras.

The City has begun a 30-day warning period for drivers exceeding the speed limit. During the warning period drivers will receive a warning in the mail.

Starting in March 1, 2011, drivers who exceed the speed limit will receive a citation. The citation is treated like a parking ticket and does not affect your driver’s license. Answers to Frequently Asked Questions are here

Volunteers are welcome at the Museum work party Sunday

On Thursday, January 27, Vicki Stiles, Director of the Shoreline Historical Museum, transferred custodianship of the historic Ronald School building to the Shoreline School District under the terms of their joint agreement. As you drive by the Ronald School you will see that all signs have been removed. In four months everything in the 15,000 square foot building was moved to the old Sunset Elementary School for temporary storage.

The Museum is now spiffing up the house at 18511 Linden Ave N for occupancy during the first week of February. The gray house will become the new Museum office and will have at least one display soon. The Museum’s phone number is still 206-542-7111.

Sunday the 30th, from 11 am to 2 pm, we’ll have a work party to clean out the old salon building on the corner of 185th and Linden. Loren Day, intrepid Museum volunteer, has nearly single-handedly cleaned up the grounds.

In the near future more displays will be housed in the old salon building and we hope to begin construction soon on a new museum building. The Museum owns the two structures and also the vacant lot to the west.

Pink Polka Dot Guild are "Find of the Week" on Nate Berkus website

The three teenaged founders of the Pink Polka Dots Guild were featured on the Nate Berkus Show on Thursday, January 27.  Not sure how long the Find of the Weeks photos will be up, but right now you can see them here.

Here's the link to view the episode on your computer.

I have "embedded" it in this article, but for email subscribers, some of your browsers may strip it out.  If you click the title of the article or go to our main website ShorelineAreaNews.com you should be able to see it.

The girls, friends from Lake Forest Park, are really quite impressive in their accomplishments.  It's always inspirational to see people move from tragedy to attainment - and they were just little girls when their friend Sydney Coxon died of a brain tumor.
