Planning Commission public hearing re road change to Pt Wells

The Shoreline Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Thursday, January 20 at 7 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall regarding a proposed street change to Richmond Beach Drive.

Neighborhood street or major arterial? RB Drive NW.
The City of Shoreline proposes to change the street classification of Richmond Beach Drive NW between approximately NW 199th Street and the Snohomish County line from Collector Arterial to Local Street.

This is the narrow street that runs parallel to the train tracks from the end of Richmond Beach Road to the Woodway entrance to the Point Wells site.

This is a significant change for the development of Point Wells, because a neighborhood local road is limited to no more than 4,000 car trips daily, which is less than half the limit for a collector arterial.

Interested persons are encouraged to provide oral and/or written comments regarding the project.

Reports and information are available online as well as at City Hall.

Comment/Testify on Proposal:
  • This may be your only opportunity to submit written comments, including comments on the environmental impacts of the proposal.
  • Written comments must be received at the address listed below before 5 pm January 19, 2011.
  • Mail, fax 206-801-2788 or deliver comments to the City of Shoreline, Attn: Steven Szafran, AICP 17500 Midvale Avenue North, Shoreline, WA 98133, or email to Steven Szafran.
Other meetings scheduled re development at Point Wells:
  • State Growth Management Board will hear the merits of the petition to build. March 2, 10 am, Location possibly in Everett

Toni & Guy Hair Academy, Gateway Plaza, Shoreline

My afternoon at Toni & Guy Hair Academy

People familiar with the little cluster of stores near 185th, in sight of Aurora and Darryl's Tavern across that river of traffic, will probably have noted that the Gold's Gym that anchored the remodeled strip closed back in May of 2010, apparently leaving behind a few unhappy customers who say they were still billed for membership as recently as December.

I live nearby, and I was looking forward to seeing what might pop up in the empty location; it seemed too cavernous for most types of retail, and much too large for a restaurant. The first new tenant, in a portion of the empty space (and I think that of a real estate office which left around the same time), was the Nursing Assistant Training Institute. While not something I'll probably ever visit, I wasn't sorry to see them in the neighborhood. You can't have too many health care professionals around, right?

Not long after, the larger gym space was occupied by the Toni and Guy Hairdressing Academy. They moved from a temporary location on 160th, where they had been parked to wait for the building. Prior to that they were the Greenwood Academy of Hair, a long-time fixture on 85th and Greenwood.

I was interested to see them show up; it seemed nice to have even more educational options in Shoreline, and so I thought I might give their hair services a try. I got a little snarkiness from friends who heard I was planning on getting my hair cut at a hair cutting school, but my hair grows fast enough, and I was just curious and crazy enough that I decided to go in for a full cut and color.

The inside of Toni and Guy is big, clean and bright, filled with dozens of little hair stations. On the walls, mounted screens show models with modern cuts and stylists working on pretty people. At one end is a long counter labeled "Color Bar" and at the other a classroom with whiteboards, but the real action is on the floor. Busy students and teachers, all wearing black, move from station to station to watch demonstrations and try out techniques on mannequin heads and on each other.

The gal at the front desk checked me in, and since I was having a "chemical service," asked me to sign a waiver which would hold the school harmless in case of "damage to my body or clothing." This made me a bit nervous, but I fully understand why the school would want to protect itself, and after all, they weren't handling nuclear by-product or anything like that, so I signed, and sat to wait for my stylist.

I didn't have to wait long; Tara, a cheery black-robed student, shook my hand and walked me back to her station. She explained how the process would work: we'd talk about the color I wanted, and she would consult with an instructor before proceeding to color and then cut my hair. After the cut, she'd have the instructor sign off on the final result.

Now, I'm one of those annoying salon-goers who never really knows what she wants. I usually just shrug, give a few vague instructions, and tell the stylist to do whatever she thinks best. I'm not the expert here, I always think. You tell me what looks good! Tara rose to the challenge, but made sure that I ok'd every decision: this color, maybe a little redder; bangs a bit thicker; just an inch or two off the back. She got the teacher's sign-off on the plan, and went to work.

Thanks, Tara!
I always find the forced conversations of the cutting chair awkward, but Tara was chatty and easy to talk to. She brought me some tea and we bonded over dog ownership, and I asked a bit about the academy. The students must complete 1600 hours of training, in either day or evening classes. It usually takes around 11 months to graduate. During that time, they spent most of their days working on customers and studying techniques, and there are classes on styling, coloring and so on. I was surprised to hear that they also learn the basics of related fields, like anatomy, chemistry, and electronics. When they work on customers, they're not paid, but they are allowed to keep tips.

I was glad to hear that, because by the time she finished with my cut, I was feeling more than happy to tip. The color was perfect (I would be glad to show my husband, who teased as I left about coming home with some weird hair color) and the cut was just what I wanted, even though I hadn't really known what I wanted. And the price...unbeatable! $13 for a cut and $45 for a color. And I felt that I got just as good a cut, and service, as I would have for two or three times the price at a salon. You know, it also just felt good to be part of someone's training. Tara will be graduating in a few more months, and isn't sure yet where she'll go from there, but she's talented and eager, and I'm sure she'll have a great career in the hair arts.

So if you've been thinking about taking what may seem like a risk, and letting a student cut your hair, just go for it. You'll get a great deal, and you'll help out someone who is just starting in their professional life.

P.S. Here's the before and after, if you're curious.

WeatherWatcher: warmer than normal but wind storms coming

Warmest and coldest days are based on average temperature of the entire day, starting at midnight. Averages are based on the whole week.

Warmest Day: 50.4ºF (Friday)
Coldest Day: 31.7ºF (Tuesday the snowy night)
Wettest Day: 1.71 inches (Mostly snow melt on Wednesday)
Rainiest Day: 0.59 inches (Thursday)

Average Temperature: 39.0ºF
High Temperature: 53.4ºF
Low Temperature: 26.4ºF

Total Rainfall: 2.48 inches

High Humidity: 100%
Low Humidity: 31%
Average Humidity: 88%

High Pressure: 29.766 inches
Low Pressure: 29.146 inches
Average Pressure: 29.5 inches.

Weather Highlights for the past week – chilly, a brief snow storm, then warm and rain.
  • Our lows for Sunday – Wednesday were below freezing, Saturday was just barely above freezing for a low.
  • Tuesday night we had our 4-5 inches of snow, however it was short lived as a warm moist storm originating from Hawaii slammed into the region.
  • Wednesday – Friday we are warmer than normal due to the jet stream bringing us warm storms from Hawaii, however this isn’t exactly a “Pineapple Express” as the storms have pauses between them and it’s not a constant several day rain.
  • Friday we had a strong breeze, not strong enough to warrant a wind advisory or warning. However strong enough to knock some limbs down and cause some scattered power outages such as the one in Lake Forest Park.

The week ahead:
  • Look for more breezy conditions on Sunday.
  • Warmer than normal weather for this week, probably more rain than normal as well. The ground is very saturated and there a chance for some mud slides.
  • I also think it’s possible to see wind storm or two in the middle of the week, perhaps towards the end of the week as well, breezy conditions at the least.

Here’s how we are doing temperature-wise compared to this month last year:

We all know that most fruit desserts are laden with sugar or artificial sweeteners – if you are like so many people, you probably said “I resolve to eat more healthy foods” recently. Fruit is healthy, full of fiber and vitamins and antioxidants; however, plain fruit can be a bit dull.

This is easily transformed with a bit of cooking – no sugar needed. I like starting with Granny Smith apples, which are very tart when raw. But a bit of slow simmering on the cooktop, and the tartness is replaced by a much sweeter tone, as natural fruit sugars are slowly made from larger carbohydrates that are less sweet. That’s my science for the day – all cooking is chemistry of one kind or another, but you probably are less interested in that, so I’ll just cut to the chase.

  1. Take 3 medium-to-large Granny Smith apples – take off the stickers and give them a wash under the tap.
  2. Inspect them for blemishes – if any are there, cut the blemishes out.
  3. Cut up the apples, remove the seeds, and cut into chunks that are approximately ½” in size. I leave the peels on, but you can peel them first for smoother final product.
  4. Put them in a pan with: 3 tablespoons water, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
  5. Put the lid on the pan, and turn up the heat under to high till it’s boiling (only a minute or two), then turn it down to a low simmer.
  6. As the apples cook, some liquid will come out of them, but you should check and stir every five or ten minutes to prevent scorching (if the pan has gone dry – add 3 more tablespoons of water).
  7. When they are soft and cooked through (it should be less than 30 minutes), take them off the stove to cool.
After cooling, you can either mash them up (I use a potato masher) into a coarse sauce, or put them in a blender or cuisinart for a smoother sauce. You can use this beautiful, sugar free sauce in so many ways: on pork chops, for example; layered in a glass with granola and yogurt for a breakfast parfait; or just as-is for a dessert. It’s easy, and this recipe is very easily doubled or tripled once you find out how much you love it. It will keep refrigerated for about a week (but it may not last that long). It sure is easier to eat healthy when the food tastes good – I hope this helps your NY resolutions!

Want different ideas? Try the same process on pears with nutmeg, or fresh cherries with ginger, or plums with lemon or orange zest. If you have little kids, you can make up your own sauces without any seasoning to suit their more tender palates. Or make up your own combo. It’s really easy and I hope you have fun with it.
