Dog attack in Hamlin Park on September 12

Sunday, December 19, 2010

King County Regional Animal Services is investigating a dog attack that happened on September 12 in Hamlin Park.

An unnamed woman was walking her small dog in Hamlin Park, when she was attacked by an unleashed dog described as a long-haired black chow mix.

Glynis Frederiksen, Operations Manager, Regional Animal Services of King County, says that "Apparently the owner whistled for the dog and called it off the victim during the attack. It is not clear whether the owner knew the dog was biting, although the victim said she was screaming."

The victim had significant injuries and was transported to the hospital. Apparently the hospital reported the attack to Animal Services. The City of Shoreline was not notified until some time later and Shoreline Police were not involved.

It is our understanding that the victim is ok now, and there was no mention of her dog being harmed. King County Regional Animal Services worked with the victim in the case and pursued other investigative leads to try and identify the dog involved in the attack, but were not able to obtain any information that lead them to the party responsible.

Glynis Frederiksen says, "Unfortunately we didn’t receive any leads on this case. The victim did not see the dog’s owner, who disappeared following the attack. We tried looking through our licensing database for similar-looking dogs in the area, and talked with individuals at the park at different times but reached a dead end. We will certainly reopen the case if we have new information."
City staff say that they have reached an understanding with Animal Services that they will notify the City more quickly in the future and will partner with the City in the investigation.

Weather highlights for the week:
  • Rainstorm: Saturday afternoon and lasting through Sunday to about 11AM we had 4.16 inches of rain in under 24 hours. That is almost half of November's total monthly rainfall.
  • Static in the air: Tuesday morning, about a quarter til 1 AM we had a group of thunderstorms roll through the area dumping a little over a quarter inch of rain.
  • Freezing: Friday morning frost and ice in places due to clear skies and radiative cooling.
  • More freezing: Friday night clear skies leading to even stronger radiative cooling with frost, ice and black ice in places.
Weather for the coming week
I don't think we have anything really exciting to store for us this week. The National Weather Service long range forecasters are still calling for a colder and wetter than normal winter with Puget Sound low land snow events (This includes the Shoreline area) possible from time to time, especially in January and February. Their latest update was on December 9th 2010. So keep things winterized, we haven't even officially started winter yet.

LFP Sinkhole is enlarging and getting closer to auto shop

During the "100 year storm" season of 1997, when the hillside collapsed on Perkins Way, the gas station on Ballinger Way and 185th found out they were sitting on top of a portion of Lyon Creek which had been diverted into culverts and buried.

The stream escaped the pipes, undermined the ground, and created a large sinkhole on the small property. The owner discovered that the hole could not be filled, so he had the gas pumps and storage tanks removed and remained in business as a successful auto repair shop.

Every significant rainstorm enlarges the sinkhole and moves it closer to the door of his shop.
KING5 did a report Friday, which was posted on NWCN.

Here's the video:

WeatherWatcher: beware of black ice

Friday, December 17, 2010

Freezing conditions are occurring at this time across most of Shoreline.

Between now and probably about 10 am there will be frost, ice and black ice in places, including on the roads that are or were still wet.

Drive carefully and if the road looks wet, it is most likely ice, not water.

Sound Transit to Lynnwood: Alternatives Narrowed to 5

Map courtesy Sound Transit
This week, presentation materials for a briefing on the Sound Transit North Corridor Transit Project – extending mass transit to Lynnwood –showed that the alternatives had been narrowed to the following:
  • Interstate 5 Light Rail
  • State Route 99 (Aurora Avenue North) elevated light rail
  • State Route 99 (Aurora Avenue North) light rail at grade
  • Interstate 5 Bus Rapid Transit
  • Interstate 5, State Route 99, and 15th NE Bus Rapid Transit

Criteria included: consistency with Sound Transit’s Long-Range Plan, travel time, reliability, capacity, regional system connectivity, land use and economic development compatibility, extraordinary cost considerations, environmental considerations, and regional growth center accessibility.

Sound Transit staff reported they heard the following themes from participants at the 3 public workshops they held this fall, on-line survey respondents, 90 comments via mail and email, and other:
  • Light rail is preferred
  • Access to it: parking, pedestrian, bicycle, east/west transit, is key
  • Interstate 5 was preferred due to being faster, more direct, and more efficient; whereas State Route 99 (Aurora Avenue North) was deemed better in terms of land use and economic development potential
  • There were many ideas for stations
The alternatives will be further refined and advanced for what is called “Level 2 detailed screening.” Out of this will come the alternatives that the Sound Transit Board of Directors selects for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement, or DEIS, next spring. The project itself is expected to be up and running by 2023.

Genealogy with Lisa Marker: #3 Find your family on the internet

Genealogy on the internet - where to go first? This is such a large topic that at least one genealogy magazine has a “top 100 websites” list each year.

The first rule of using the internet as a research tool is to understand that it is only that: a tool. Just because you find information on the web does not necessarily make that information true. You must still verify it using primary and secondary sources. This is particularly important regarding user-submitted family trees that are abundantly available on many websites. Unless the site has citations galore regarding where the user got their information, it is wise to use the information for leads only. Even then, you will probably want to verify for yourself any part of the information you are interested in.

That being said, it is now possible to find information on the web that qualifies as a primary or secondary source. You may find scans of birth or death certificates, or of government land grants. It is very feasible to find obituaries from old newspapers online, and know exactly what newspaper they came from. You may also find marriage records or military pension paperwork. These have been, and continue to be, scanned in to be available to use as sources. Record exactly where you saw them (the URL name next to the http), and even the date you found them (websites do have a way of disappearing or changing names).

Some of my faves:
  • Cyndislist.com (free)
  • Ancestry.com (pay, but most libraries have a free version)
  • RootsWeb.com (free)
  • FamilySearch.com (free) - this is the LDS church website. They are in the process of digitizing their records, and many are currently available online in the Beta portion of their website)
  • The Washington State Digital Archives (free)
  • SteveMorse.org - (free) Web pages by Stephen Morse. You will be able to do searches of EllisIsland.org, as well as other comprehensive searches, using his templates.
  • GenForum - (Free) This has message board sites for surnames as well as locations. You may find others researching the same names, locations or topics.
  • USGenWeb (free) - information posted by location. Each county within a state has its own site.
  • Newspaper websites available using your library card (and you can access them from home, most likely - America’s GenealogyBank, and NewspaperArchive).
Have fun looking at some of these, and remember to Cite Your Sources

Aurora construction update - 165th to 185th

Through January 2, 2011

Construction and winter weather
As construction continues through the winter, please be aware that some construction activities are weather-dependent. Scheduled construction activities may shift if heavy rains, snow or cold temperatures roll in.

Holiday break – no construction beginning December 23
Crews will finish up construction activities for the year on Wednesday, December 22 and will resume work on Monday, January 3, 2011.
Happy holidays!

Access to N 182nd Street open during the holidays
Crews have been installing underground utilities and large vaults on the west side of Aurora. There are times when access to N 182nd Street must be limited or closed from Aurora while crews dig across the street. These closures will occur periodically through mid-January. However, access to N 182nd Street will remain open during the contractor’s holiday break.

Continuing vault, underground utility, and stormwater system installation on the west side of Aurora
Crews will continue installing underground stormwater, utility, and communications components in three trenches along the west side of Aurora between N 175th and N 185th Streets, as well as large underground utility vaults. This work will frequently change access to driveways; drivers should take care to look for designated driveways when traveling south on Aurora.

Paving and sidewalks
Crews were unable to pave the work zone on the west side of Aurora between N 170th and N 175th Streets last week due to rain. An asphalt approach to N 170th Street will be installed on Monday, December 20; access to N 170th Street from Aurora will be closed for a few hours during this work.

Paving the rest of this work zone has been rescheduled to occur the week of January 2 between 7:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., depending on weather. Access to N 170th Street from Aurora will be closed and access to business driveways may be limited during this work.

Forming and pouring sidewalks is also weather-dependent. Crews will continue forming driveways and sidewalks on the west side of Aurora near N 165th Street as weather allows. Driveways will be poured in sections, leaving half open at a time, unless business owners work out alternate arrangements with field crews.

Water main work at Aurora and N 175th Street
Seattle Public Utilities crews will continue work on the water main at Aurora and N 175th Street. This work should be completed by December 22. Work will occur at night from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction on Aurora. Police assistance will be used to maintain safety.

Service connections
Crews will continue work to provide businesses on the corridor with underground utilities. This includes saw-cutting asphalt on properties and trenching to install underground conduit. This work is occurring on both the east and west side of Aurora between N 165th and N 175th Streets.

Installing irrigation and rain garden components
Crews will continue installing irrigation sleeves and rain gardens on Aurora between N 170th and N 175th Streets.

Stormwater trenching across Aurora (week of January 2)
Beginning the week of January 2, crews will trench across Aurora at night to install stormwater connections. Traffic on Aurora will be reduced to one lane in each direction from 7 pm to 5 am.

Wall construction on Aurora north of N 185th Street (week of January 2)
Crews will remove vegetation and install silt fencing on the northwest corner of Aurora and N 185th Street in preparation for building a retaining wall near Subway Restaurant. Due to weather and the holiday schedule, drilling and wall construction is scheduled to begin the week of January 2.

Pre-construction utility relocation work (N 185th to N 192nd Streets)
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) will continue gas line relocation on Aurora north of N 185th Street in preparation for the start of construction on the next segment of the Aurora Corridor Project between N 185th and N 192nd Streets. PSE’s contractor, Pilchuck Contractors, will notify business and property owners of work at their properties. Overall gas relocation will take approximately four weeks. Major construction on this segment of Aurora is expected to begin in late January.
