WeatherWatcher: Another thunderstorm

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Another day of weather that I felt was worthy of noting. Although I did not observe it due to the timing of the storm, we had some thunderstorms roll through the area after Midnight Tuesday morning. The winds got pretty strong too, bringing down some tree limbs. We've received at least another inch of rain since last weekend's rain storm which is keeping the ground fairly saturated. Check back on Saturday for the week's rainfall total.

I'm interested in any readers comments regarding the thunderstorms after midnight, did you wake up to them or hear them?

Shoreline woman, 97, provides quilts for College Place Elementary 1st graders

Idah Dilling shows students how to make a quilt.

by Teresa Wippel, MyEdmondsNews.com

Idah Dilling likes to quilt. So when the 97-year-old Shoreline woman was looking for a place to donate all the quilts she had made, she called College Place Elementary School teacher Laurie Davis, who attends her church.

Davis, who teaches first grade, came up with the idea of connecting the quilts to reading, by providing her first grade class of 6- and 7-year-olds a chance to snuggle with a warm quilt and a good book.

On Thursday, December 9, Dilling made a personal appearance along with the quilts. She provided the class with a brief lesson on how a quilt is made, then let each child choose their favorite.

According to Edmonds School District spokesperson D.J. Jakala, at the end of the school year, the children get to take their quilts home with them.

Another local connection, D.J. Jakala is a former spokesperson for Shoreline Schools.

Fire in Shoreline home Tuesday

Multiple Shoreline Fire crews responded to a house fire on 12/14/10 in the 16700 block of 3rd Ave NE . They arrived on scene around 8:30 am to find the split level home full of heavy smoke.

Investigators say the fire was caused by a stuffed animal placed too close to a space heater left on in the basement. No one was home at the time, and investigators were told that the occupants were in the process of moving.

No one was injured, however there was substantial smoke and water damage throughout the residence.

Shoreline Fire would like to remind everyone to keep at least two feet of “safe distance” from fireplaces, stovetops, heat sources, wall heaters, space heaters.
