Soulful Sounds of Christmas, Total Experience Choir at SCC

Saturday, December 11, 2010

Pat Wright and the Total Experience Gospel Choir, along with guest soloist Nichol Venee’ Eskridge, will perform at Shoreline Community College's Little Theatre (map) on Monday, December 20 at 7:30 pm for the 22nd year of the “Soulful Sounds of Christmas”.

Pastor Pat Wright
This high-spirited evening of Gospel and Christmas music has been a mainstay at Shoreline Community College for two decades, benefiting the athletics program.  Now it also supports a music outreach ministry Street Praise, a program that feeds the homeless.

Wright and The Total Experience Gospel Choir have been part of the cultural fabric of the Northwest for over 30 years with their hand-clapping, foot-stomping, toe-tapping gospel music.

Wright founded The Total Experience Gospel Choir in 1973.  The choir, whose members range in age from 6 to 72, is well known nationally and internationally and has travelled and performed in 38 states, on 5 continents and 22 countries.  The choir has been credited with numerous awards and 7 recordings.

Venee Eskridge
Venee Eskridge is no stranger to the Northwest either. She is a seasoned gospel music talent with performances at local churches, schools, malls and special events including “Keepers of the Dream,” “Black Nativity,” and "Duke Ellington Sacred Music Concert” with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.

She started singing as a young girl in her father’s church in Savannah, Georgia. She has been featured on several recording projects locally and nationally, and has four solo CD projects of her own, “Christmas with Venee,” “Original Love,” “Only By The Spirit,” and Perfect Gift.”

Tickets range from $12 -- $18 and can be purchased by calling 206-234-7859.

New 148-Unit housing development breaks ground in Shoreline

Architect's sketch of Market Square. Courtesy City of Shoreline
Weidner Apartment Homes recently broke ground on its 148-unit Market Square project on Aurora Ave N between N 200th and N 205th Streets, just west of Costco. Weidner builds, manages, and owns apartments throughout the United States and Canada. The general contractor, Synergy Construction, is based in Woodinville.
“We expect that a large number of our future residents will choose this property not only for its quality, but also because of its proximity to public transportation,” commented Greg Sparhawk, Weidner’s lead architect. “We think that the residents will appreciate the added value from amenities like the central courtyard, the large rooftop green space, the lounge, and the exercise room.”
The complex will be a mix of studio, 1 bedroom, and 2 bedroom units, and it will feature two levels of underground parking along with a large area for bicycle parking. The grand opening is expected in the spring of 2012.

According to Dan Eernissee, Economic Development Manager for the City of Shoreline, “Market Square represents an immediate investment of $20 million in the City of Shoreline, and its future tenants will undoubtedly enrich and support our community for decades to come. It is a clear testimony of the importance of the Aurora Corridor improvements as well. Needless to say, we are very enthusiastic to see Market Square move forward."

“The City of Shoreline has been great to work with,” Sparhawk added, “and we’re excited to see this project come to life.”

Foreclosures in Shoreline, as seen on Google Maps

This might be tough to read this close to the holidays, but it's a reality that we should all be aware of, as it could involve our friends, family and neighbors.

Google Maps has recently upgraded their ability to show real estate listings split into various categories, including foreclosures.

To see homes in foreclosure in your area,
  • visit Google Maps (which will open in a new window or tab)
  • enter an address, and note the "More" button near the top right, between "Traffic" and "Map."
  • Under "More" you will see an option for "Real Estate."
  • Click on that, then looking at the left of the screen, you will see the listing types "For rent," "For sale," and "Foreclosure."
  • Check the "Foreclosure" box, and you can then navigate around the area and homes in foreclosure, represented by red dots on the map, which will update as you scroll or zoom.
And the data is dismaying. Here is a screen capture of the foreclosed homes in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, from an eagle's eye view.

There appear to be hundreds of homes in foreclosure in this area, and it wasn't even as hard hit as some parts of the US. It's a shocking and graphic insight into how difficult things are in this economy for so many people.

Symetra Financial and the Seattle Seahawks honored Parkwood Elementary School teachers Bethany Ibach and Kristin Mesler as “Symetra Heroes in the Classroom” Tuesday during a special school assembly.

Seahawks cornerback Roy Lewis made a surprise appearance at the Shoreline school, where Ibach teaches first grade and Mesler teaches third grade, delighting both the teachers and the 430 students on hand. Tom Marra, president and chief executive officer of Symetra Financial, joined Lewis for the presentations.

Bethany Ibach was nominated for a Symetra Hero in the Classroom award by Parkwood Elementary School principal Laura Ploudre, who cited Ibach’s passion for teaching, her successful first-grade blended program, and her resilience following a recent battle with a brain tumor. “Bethany’s true talent lies in taking the natural energy of six- and seven-year-olds and directing it toward engaging, hands-on learning activities that result in outstanding student achievement. While she recognizes each student’s individual struggles or needs, she lovingly holds them accountable to give their best effort. She is the ‘warm demander’ who says, “I know you can do this!”
Kristin Mesler is an extremely talented, skillful teacher who gives her students an outstanding education in academics as well as unconditional love, an acceptance of diversity and a window into the joy of learning,” said co-worker Dianne Hertzberg, who nominated Mesler. “Her mainstream third-grade classroom successfully blends eight special education students, giving each child, of every ability, the chance to learn from others.” The school’s PTA also recently honored Mesler as 2010 Teacher of the Year.

Ibach and Mesler are two of 24 K-12 teachers across the Puget Sound area who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2010 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations. In addition, they receive tickets to a Seahawks home game and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at Qwest Field. Mesler will be recognized at the Dec. 19 game when the Seahawks take on the Atlanta Falcons, and Ibach will be honored at the Jan. 2 game against the St. Louis Rams.

Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to balance the core curriculum with students’ individual needs; build trust among students, parents and the community; and invest in their students’ long-term success.

In addition to honoring exceptional teachers on and off the field, each of the schools represented by a 2010 teacher Hero is eligible for an MVP Award, which provides funding to enhance learning in Seattle-area schools. Three $10,000 grants will be awarded at the end of the 2010 football season.  More information about Symetra Heroes in the Classroom is available at their website.

Warmest day and coldest day are based on average temperature of the entire day and averages are based on the whole week.

Warmest day: 47.9°F
Coldest day: 36.2°F

Average temperature: 43.5°F
Weekly high temperature: 54.0°F
Weekly low temperature: 32.4°F
Weekly high humidity: 100%
Weekly low humidity: 39%
Average humidity: 85%
Total rainfall this week: 2.66" (Almost half of this was from the Wednesday morning thunderstorm)
Maximum barometric pressure: 29.707 inches.
Minimum barometric pressure: 29.176 inches.
Average barometric pressure: 29.457 inches.

Weather Highlights for the week
Monday morning's low was 32.4°F with frost in most places.
Wednesday morning we had a severe band of thunderstorms develop and blow through as a rare weather front called a Bow Echo.

Weather for the coming week
We are expecting 1-4 inches of rain between Saturday the 11th and Monday night of the 13th, all thanks to a weather pattern which is now called an Atmospheric River, previously known as the Pineapple Express.

This pattern usually consists of warm tropical moisture heading northeast from Hawaii and pointed by the jet stream straight at the Pacific Northwest.

Rain is expected to start Saturday evening. Saturday morning and afternoon may be a good time to make sure all storm drains are clear of debris and that sump pumps are in working order.

Keep an eye on those steep hill sides Monday and later throughout the week for the potential of mud and land slides.

Aurora Ave N in the construction zone will likely have standing water as it did in earlier fall rain storms due to the incomplete road grading and storm drainage, especially between N 175th and N 185th on the north bound side. Drive carefully and stay dry.

Shoreline residential fire Thursday evening

Shoreline Fire crews quickly controlled a residential fire last night in the 14500 block of 6th Avenue NE.

The residents called 9-1-1 around 5:30 p.m. when they saw smoke coming from the laundry area -- behind their clothes dryer.

The residents evacuated, and fire crews arrived within minutes to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading.

No one was hurt, but there was smoke and water damage to the room and contents.

Shoreline Fire’s Prevention Division would like to remind everyone to maintain your dryer’s lint filters and vent systems regularly. Also, clothes and combustible materials should be kept a safe distance away from heat sources, such as dryers, heating vents, space heaters and other appliances.

Shoreline Public Works warns of possible flooding over the weekend

Shoreline City Staff Advisory: Residents Should Get Ready for Sunday’s Pineapple Express

A flood watch has been issued for Western Washington today (Friday) due to weather phenomena known as the “Pineapple Express.”

This phenomena is the wettest-type of storms, bringing between 1-2" of rain per day for Seattle and much more near the mountains and it has an abundance of warm, tropical moisture. It also brings a very high potential for flooding, as the warm air tends to raise snow levels quite high and elevate stream flow.

City of Shoreline Surface Water Manager Brian Landau states “Residents of Ballinger Creek, Thornton Creek, Ronald Bog and other areas that have experienced flooding in the past, will want to be prepared before Sunday. Flooding is very possible.”

Community Services Customer Response Team advises residents to keep an eye on storm drains and catch basins and to clear and remove leaves and debris to make sure storm water reaches the drain system, reducing chances of flooding in yards and homes.

City of Shoreline Operations Manager Jesus Sanchez says, “The City will have Public Works staff on stand-by over the weekend to provide assistance relating to flooding. We do have sandbags and sand available at Hamlin Park Maintenance Yard near the West entrance. I advise residents to keep an eye on catch basins, and clear them of debris to prevent nuisance flooding.

What is the “Pineapple Express?” Seattle’s local weatherman Steve Poole says “I remember a December night in the mid 1990s when the temperature reached 63 degrees at 2 am during a Pineapple Express event. The ‘Pineapple Express’ is when a weather system originates from the Hawaiian tropics. You can usually see it on a satellite photo, where the band of rainfall stretches from the Pacific Northwest to the southwest near Hawaii.”

Shoreline staffmember Jill Rucker tells us where to call:
  • All questions regarding sandbag supplies pick-ups at Hamlin Park Public Works Yard or how-to techniques, debris removal, storm drain overflow, or flooding problems can be directed to our Customer Response Team (CRT) who are on stand-by this weekend by calling 206-801-2700.
  •
Downed power lines call 206-684-3000.
  • Street lights out? Get the pole number then call Seattle City Light 206-684-7056.  (or report online)
  • Low hanging power lines near homes call CleannScapes at 206-244-6427.

Children's 'Marv the Milkman' gets a lifesaving delivery from Shoreline woman

From our NewsPartner, The Seattle Times, a story about Valerie Hoffman, a Shoreline woman who donated a kidney to a co-worker at Children's Hospital.

Marv the Milkman, Seattle Children's beloved dietary associate Marvin Williams who dresses up to make the hospital less frightening for young patients, has received a very special gift — a kidney donated by a co-worker.

By Nancy Bartley, Seattle Times staff reporter
For 14 years, Marv the Milkman has pushed his Moo Mobile through the halls of Seattle Children's hospital, spontaneously mooing in fluent cow, dispensing high-fives and hugs, candy and cookies along with the complex liquid formulas he delivers to patients.
It's Marvin Williams' gift to young patients, who find their stays less frightening when there's a lanky man in a bow tie, spotted apron and cow hat mooing just outside the door.
Williams is more than the dietary associate who brings special drinks. He's a visitor who cheers up the sick and takes kids' minds off being frightened, co-workers say.
"He's the heart and spirit of the hospital," said Cathie Rea, Intensive Care Unit director.
Tom Hoffman, a painter at the hospital who had heard that Williams needed a kidney, saw Williams pushing the Moo Mobile one day and volunteered to donate. But Hoffman did not have the right blood type. But his wife, Valerie, 45, a surgical scheduler at the hospital, turned out to be a match.
The Shoreline couple discussed it and talked it over with their seven children. Everyone concurred: Marv the Milkman would get a renewed life.
The rest of the story and photos here.

What you can do
Williams cannot receive any balloons, gifts or flowers due to his condition, but both Williams and Hoffman enjoy receiving cards. Children's Hospital, 4800 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle WA 98105.

Dale Turner Family YMCA Receives $5,000 Grant from JCPenney Afterschool

Thursday, December 9, 2010

Dale Turner YMCA. Photo courtesy YMCA.
The Dale Turner Family YMCA has received a $5,000 grant from JCPenney Afterschool to provide financial assistance for students in grades K-12 to participate in afterschool programs. This gift is one of 287 grants being awarded by JCPenney Afterschool to YMCAs around the country.
“JCPenney is firmly committed to supporting youth-serving organizations, like the Y, that are dedicated to providing positive, meaningful programs during the crucial hours of 3 pm to 6 pm, when studies show that a quarter of America’s children are unsupervised after school,” said Jodi Gibson, community relations director for JCPenney and president of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund.

The Y comments:
"Today, with thousands of afterschool programs across the country, the nation’s YMCAs are a leading resource for parents seeking a safe, enriching place for their children to go after school. YMCA afterschool programs focus on the holistic development of youth, which include elements that promote health and well-being, social skill development, emotional development, creativity, character development, sports and service."

In the Shoreline and Edmonds school districts, the YMCA serves 130 children from eleven schools at four sites. Over 40 percent of those children receive subsidies toward their program costs.
“The Dale Turner Family YMCA is dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility,” said Courtney Whitaker, Branch Executive. “This generous support from JCPenney Afterschool strengthens our efforts by giving parents of North Seattle peace of mind, and their children a place to learn, grow and thrive.”

JCPenney Afterschool has supported YMCA afterschool programming since 1999. In addition to awarding afterschool access grants, JCPenney Afterschool has implemented Round-Up fundraising events and a JCPcares social media campaign to raise awareness and resources in support of afterschool programs in every JCPenney community.

Cold Weather Advisory from Shoreline Fire

Weather experts are predicting a colder than normal winter this year, even worse than last year which broke many cold weather records.

Last year several Shoreline buildings were affected by this cold snap and sustained substantial water damage after pipes froze, broke and then thawed.

Most of the damaged buildings were unoccupied apartment units with no heat turned on.

Fire sprinkler and plumbing experts recommend that buildings with any plumbing should maintain a minimum temperature of 40º Fahrenheit.

Please check your building and be prepared. A simple way to protect your building is to leave the heat on. Other measures may be needed in certain circumstances.

Help Shoreline Fire Department spread the word and let coworkers, colleagues, family, and friends know that some simple preparation steps can potentially save thousands of dollars from unwanted water damage.

For information and questions please contact Shoreline Fire Marshal 206-533-6565.
