Update: Over five hundred people receive free flu shots Saturday

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Signs were in several languages
King County Public Health offered free flu shots at Parkwood Elementary on Saturday, November 20. (see previous story).

Our photographer, Steven H. Robinson, decided to take advantage of the offer and get a few photos in the process. Because of HIPAA privacy regulations, he was unable to photograph any people.

However, Public Health had two goals with this clinic. Their main goal was to practice handling large groups of people in a medical emergency. They thought it would be a good way to distribute this year's flu vaccine.

People waiting were divided into three lines
There were a 100 customers lined up when the doors opened and Steve reports that they were processed in just forty minutes, doing the paperwork and the shots in that amount of time.

The set up used FEMA/DHS protocols. Workers were organized by assignment and wearing orange vests.

Additional information from Public Health:
Thanks for your coverage of our flu vaccination clinic last Saturday at Parkwood Elementary. As a quick follow-up, I'd like to offer a clarification about how many people we vaccinated.

At the time your photographer came by, we had been open for less than an hour and had already vaccinated about 100 people. The clinic continued until 1 p.m., and we were thrilled to vaccinate about 550 people in all. In addition, we vaccinated over 600 people at the other clinic we were operating at the same time that day in Des Moines.

It’s great news that so many people took advantage of the opportunity to protect themselves and the people around them from getting the flu. It also gave us another opportunity to practice providing vaccinations to a large number of people in a short amount of time, in case we need that capacity for future health emergencies.

Thanks again for your coverage, and for everyone who came out to see us and get vaccinated.

Shoreline CleanScapes update - garbage pickup - maybe

CleanScapes provides garbage and recycling service to Shoreline.

Your garbage and recycling may or may not be picked up today in Shoreline - it depends on how accessible your street is.

CleanScapes cancelled Tuesday collections because of the road conditions and used some of their trucks to help with sanding and snow removal in Shoreline (see story).

Normally, that would push everyone ahead a day - Tuesday on Wednesday; Wednesday on Thursday, and so on.

They had already planned to be off on Thanksgiving and collect Thursday on Friday and Friday on Saturday.

They are putting their trucks on the road for the accessible residential areas, so Tuesday and Wednesday customers may get service, if they live in a flat area.

"Residential customers who do not receive service today should place all carts (garbage, recycle, food waste/yard debris) in the usual collection location on their next collection day.

"Residents can put out double the amount of garbage at no extra cost. Recycling and food waste/yard debris will be collected as usual."

CleanScapes will be providing limited commercial collection service.

If you do put your collection bins out, make sure they are out of the roadway.

CleanScapes truck assisting with snow removal/sanding in Shoreline

CleanScapes provides garbage and recycling services to Shoreline.

As part of a pilot project with the City of Shoreline, CleanScapes is using a modified commercial collection truck to plow and sand roads in Shoreline. CleanScapes’ President, Chris Martin, came up with the idea after the significant snowfall the region received in 2008.

“It occurred to me that if our trucks could not get out to collect garbage on steep or difficult to reach streets, why not use them to assist our municipal customers to increase the number of plows on main arterials”, said Martin.

CleanScapes acquired several plows and a sander that can be placed on collection vehicles in 2009, and they are piloting this modified service approach in Shoreline.

Allied Waste update on garbage, recycling, yard waste - LFP

LFP is contracted with Allied Waste. Shoreline is contracted with CleanScapes.

From Allied Waste

Inclement Weather-Allied Waste Garbage Services-Wednesday November 24, 2010:

Commercial and Roll Off operations will be working in all areas. Critical services are being prioritized. Drivers are finding containers frozen to the ground and commodities frozen inside the containers. They are doing the best they can to completely empty containers.

Residential operations will not operate today, Wednesday, November 24,  due to dangerous road conditions.

If your Residential service for Garbage, Recycling, or Yard Waste is not collected our plan is to provide double the regular amount to be picked up on your next regular collection day.

If weather conditions prevent collection of garbage or recycling, please remove the containers from the street.

  • Up to twice the regular amount of garbage and/or food & yard waste will be accepted at no additional charge on the next regularly scheduled collection day for each container. Excess materials due to missed collection can be put in a temporary container, such as a box or paper bag marked "Garbage," "Recycling" or "Yard Debris There is no limit on the amount of accepted recyclables for collection.
  • No credit is given for delayed residential collection due to weather conditions, but up to twice the regular amount is accepted at no charge to compensate for the missed collection.
  • Every Other Week Recycling & Yard Waste Collected Two (2) weeks after Missed Collection: If recycling or yard waste is regularly collected every other week, the missed material will be collected on the next scheduled day for that container (two weeks from the missed collection), unless residents are otherwise notified by telephone or on this site

Allied Waste Services will be closed on Thursday for the holiday. Thursday's customers will be picked up on Friday and Friday's customers will be picked up on Saturday.

The Cities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park are planning out a route to connect the Interurban Trail in Shoreline to the Burke Gilman Trail in Lake Forest Park and this stretch is an important link.

But right now, as Carl captured it, it's a snowy landscape.

Shoreline City Council adopts 2011 budget

From the City Manager's Office

On November 22 the City Council adopted the 2011 Budget. The budget consists of two major parts: the $36 million operations budget and the $28.2 million capital budget. The 2011 budget is $26.5 million or 28% less than the 2010 budget. The decline is largely linked to the decrease in the City’s capital budget. Major projects such as city hall, park bond improvements, and Aurora improvements from 165th to 185th were included in the 2010 budget and will either be completed or a substantial amount of expenditures will have occurred in 2010.

The 2011 operations budget net of one-time accounting transfers has decreased by 1 percent compared to the 2010 budget, while the City continues to experience increases in police and jail costs, health insurance premiums, and state mandated retirement costs.

The cost to fund day-to-day City services, in inflation adjusted dollars, is approximately $461 per resident, nearly 10 percent lower than in 2000. The City has had to do more with less given that inflation has grown 28% since 2000.

In the recent election Shoreline voters approved Proposition 1 by 56%. This approval established a tax rate of $1.48 per 1,000 of assessed valuation for 2011, which remains below the legal limit of $1.60.

The City also has an excess levy to repay the general obligation bonds that were approved by the voters in May 2006 (70% approval) for open space acquisition and park improvements. The total general obligation bond levy for 2011 is $1.7 million, resulting in an estimated levy rate of $0.26 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Although Proposition 1 addresses the City’s structural revenue issues over the next six years, the City anticipates continued recessionary revenue declines for 2012 and 2013. While these projections are related to future budgets, the City Council believed it was prudent to capture savings in the 2011 budget to minimize the forecasted short-term gaps. As a result, the Council made additional line-item reductions and eliminated a staff position for a total savings of approximately $145,000. Likewise, for the second year in a row, the City Council did not include a cost of living adjustment for City staff for 2011.

For more information about the 2011 Budget, visit the City’s website or contact Finance Director Debbie Tarry at (206) 801-2301.

Husband and wife are Heroes in the Classroom

Mark Owen of Highland Terrace and Jill Owen of Shorewood

Mark Owen, fifth grade teacher at Highland Terrace Elementary, and Jill Owen, math teacher at Shorewood High School, will be honored as the November 28 Shoreline School District recipients of the Heroes in the Classroom program sponsored by the Seattle Seahawks and Symetra Financial.

Symetra Heroes in the Classroom is a community program that recognizes Shoreline, Renton and Seattle teachers for outstanding leadership and instructional skills during the Seattle Seahawks season.

Mark and Jill will be recognized prior to the Seahawks home game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Mark and Jill will each receive a team jersey, two tickets to the Seahawks game and on-field passes, and a $350 Office Max gift card for classroom supplies.

Mark Owen was nominated by Highland Terrace Principal Mike VanOrden who wrote in part: "every interaction Mark has with students, parents and community members is positive and affirming. It is obvious that he cares about the success and well-being of each of his students and, as a result, people want to do their best when they are with him."

One example of Mark's dedication to children has been his work establishing and maintaining the Math Olympiad program at Highland Terrace, which has the highest participation rate in the District. He is also in charge of the school's safety patrol, training more than 70 students a year to work before and after school.

Mark nominated his wife Jill for the Heroes award. "She is there for them (her students). They know her door is always open and she will do whatever needs to be done to inspire, reassure, and reteach. Wear her hear on her sleeve is what she is all about and I think they work a bit harder than they normally would to give back to her through their effort and hard work."

In addition, Symetra and the Seahawks will make a $10,000 donation to three participating schools following the 2010 season. Funds will be designated to support a specific student achievement program at each school.

Baker congratulates Chase on her election to the State Senate

Monday, November 22, 2010

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

Republican David Baker signaled the end of his campaign for the State Senate Monday by congratulating Democratic winner Maralyn Chase, thanking his supporters and appealing for money to defray the cost of the campaign.

Baker said that he had taken more votes in the 32nd District than any Republican since the 1970s. That technically may be correct, but most of what is now the 32nd District actually elected a Republican in the 1980s when it was part of the 1st Legislative District.

Baker is still a city councilman and mayor in Kenmore.

Baker trails Chase by a 60 percent to 39 percent margin, with both King and Snohomish counties to certify results Tuesday. King County votes come from Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore and the Finn Hill area near Kirkland. The smaller Snohomish County part of the District includes Woodway, south Edmonds and unincorporated Esperance.

How long can you survive without social networks? Facebook? Twitter? Myspace? Texting? Email?

How long can you survive without social networks? That's the question being posed by the Shorewood and Shorecrest video classes of Martin Ballew and Trent Mitchell (they of the lip dub fame).

Participants in this social experiment are challenged to (gasp) communicate face to face or by telephones connected by wires (landlines to the young). No Facebook, no Twitter. No MySpace, No Chat. Worst of all - No Texting. EMail only when necessary for work or school.

"Students from both Shorecrest and Shorewood will give up Social Networks for a week. Some kids think it will be easy and others think it will be the hardest thing in the world. We are encouraging face to face communication as much as possible and we are also encouraging the students to get other teachers and their parents involved too."

For students, it will be like going Back to the Future.

Video students at both schools are sponsoring the project. They will be creating documentaries and news packages throughout the week.

"We will of course have the students at both schools compete to make the best video and to see which school will have the most students make it through the week without breaking down and using technology."

The experiment will begin on December 6. More information is available on (where else?) their Facebook page.  Go there and accept the invitation - if you dare...
