CleanScapes Tips: for the holidays

Sunday, November 7, 2010

CleanScapes provides the trash, recycling, and yard waste pick-up for the City of Shoreline. Lake Forest Park is contracted with Allied Waste.
CleanScapes is going to provide us with regular tips about how we all can be easier on the environment and our pocketbooks by doing things just a little differently.

Giving Thanks
As you plan for your annual Thanksgiving gathering there are many steps you can take to reduce waste, save money and give thanks to the planet at the same time.

The Invitation. Go paperless! Consider sending an email invitation or using “Evite” to personalize the party details for your Thanksgiving guests.

Natural Decorations. Bring fall inside and decorate with leaves from local parks or evergreen boughs from your yard. Squash and other produce from farmers markets make for great place card holders and centerpieces. If you are looking for a little light, local beeswax candles or reusable, battery-powered tea-light candles can brighten up the holiday table.

Harvest Locally. Winter squash, apples, pears, Brussels sprouts, beets, beans, carrots, celery, greens and sustainably raised turkeys are making their debut right now at local farmers markets

By supporting local farms, you can help reduce packaging and fuel used to transport food from across the U.S. and around the world.

Setting the Table. Before stocking up on single-use plates and cups, save money by using reusable and washable plates, cups, silverware, napkins, table clothes and serving dishes. If you are looking to save even more money, purchase gently-used durable serviceware at local second-hand retailers.

Reduce Packaging. For anything left on the shopping list, consider buying in bulk, or purchase items with the least amount of packaging. And when you shop, don’t forget your reusable shopping bags. (Available for purchase at TOP Food and Drugs, Bartells, and many other local retailers).

Ready, Set, Sort! Encourage your guests to pitch in. Set out and clearly mark your recycling bins, and if you have food and yard waste collection service, help guests keep food waste out of the garbage by setting up a collection container for post-meal food scraps.

Recycle Cooking Oil. Whether you bake or fry, the cooking oil and drippings left after the holiday meal can be donated locally and turned into biofuel. Click here for drop-off locations.

Evan Smith: Why is Shoreline Prop. 1 passing after overwhelming LFP defeat?

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

Lake Forest Park City Councilwoman Sandy Koppenol raised an interesting question Thursday: Why does Shoreline’s levy-lid lift seem to be passing easily, just 11 weeks after a similar proposal lost by a 78 percent to 22 percent margin.

I don’t have an answer. Both propositions had opposition from similar groups — conservative anti-tax groups and liberal Democratic organizations.

If anyone has an idea send it along.

On the fourth day of ballot counting, the “yes” votes on Shoreline Proposition 1 went above 55 percent for the first time.

The voter turnout as of Friday afternoon was nearly 55 percent, compared to an expected final turnout of 70 percent. Ballots counted include ballots that arrived at the County elections office by Wednesday and all votes from accessible voting machines in the Bellevue, Seattle and Tukwilla.

King County will update the vote count at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

CORRECTION: 1981 redistricting was done to help not punish Mountlake Terrace Republican

Commentary / Evan Smith
By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

In my Election Day commentary about Washington’s being one of the few states that has taken the process of redrawing legislative and Congressional maps out of the hands of State legislatures, I mentioned the situation in which the 1981 Legislature drew the borders of the District that included Shoreline and Lake Forest Park across the County line to include the home of Mountlake Terrace Republican Bill Kiskaddon.

Former Democratic State Rep. Nancy Rust was right when she pointed out that Republicans, who then controlled the Legislature, were trying to protect then-Sen. Kiskaddon, who was well known in Shoreline because of his being active in the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, where his wife was then Church secretary.

Kiskaddon’s wife, Donna Kiskaddon, tells me that legislators made the move to protect Sen. Kiskaddon by putting him into what was then the 1st Legislative District, which then included Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, as well as areas of north Seattle. She says she thinks her husband had little to do with it.

Then-Sen. Donn Charnley, a Shoreline Democrat who lost his seat after the redistricting, recalls that he had a promise from the then-chairman of the committee working on the matter that he would be protected but that Republican committee chairman (and later Congressman) Jack Metcalf had to apologize because Kiskaddon had insisted that the precinct that included Kiskaddon’s home be brought into the new district, a district that otherwise, was in north King County.

That was the last time that Washington’s Legislature did the decennial redistricting. As Rep. Rust points out, after Democrats took control following the 1982 election, both parties agreed to the League of Women Voters proposal for a bipartisan commission to draw legislative and Congressional district lines.

The 1991 redistricting and the 2001 redistricting were done by commissions made up of four people appointed by the leaders of the Democratic and Republican caucuses in both the State House and State Senate, a group that must agree on a nonpartisan chairman.

The LWV and other good-government groups have pushed such efforts in several other states but have been successful in only a few.

If the census shows that Washington will gain a tenth seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, the bipartisan commission will carve out the new district as well as redrawing other Congressional- and legislative-district lines.

Most states will see scenes like the one that Charley describes from 1981.

In the local district in the 1980s, Kiskaddon defeated Charnley in 1984 by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin, before losing to Democrat Patty Murray in 1988 by a 53-47 margin, making Kiskaddon the last Republican elected from this area.

Sunday - change the batteries in your smoke alarm

Saturday, November 6, 2010

If you didn't turn your clocks back an hour before you went to bed Saturday night, you are going to be very disoriented on Sunday, much like my friend who was riding the ferry to Seattle when a major earthquake hit. Those on the ferry didn't feel a thing, but they walked off the boat to totally silent streets, filled with rubble.

Spring Ahead - Fall Back.

So now change the batteries in your smoke alarms and check your carbon monoxide detectors.

Northshore Fire Foundation donates helmets to Kenmore Head Start

Kenmore Head Start class and friends.  Courtesy NS Fire

The Northshore Fire Foundation donated bicycle helmets to 19 happy children at the Kenmore Elementary Head Start classroom on Wednesday, November 3.

Two Northshore Fire Department firefighters visited the classroom to make sure the helmets were properly fitted.

“The kids were so excited to have the firefighters here to fit their helmets and tell them how important it is to always wear a helmet when they ride their bikes,” said Melissa Bloor, Head Start teacher. “We are grateful for the Northshore Fire Foundation’s generous donation.”

The Northshore Fire Department has donated helmets to the Head Start children since 2005. This year the Foundation offered to make the donation. The Foundation is a group of professional firefighters that serve the communities of Kenmore and Lake Forest Park.

They formed a non-profit foundation to further their drive in helping those in need in the local community in ways they could not while performing their normal work functions. Through other established charities, the Northshore Fire Foundation seeks out families they can sponsor during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season for food and gifts. They participate in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program, and also use their resources to raise awareness or funds for other charities, such as the NW Burn Foundation.

Tubing on YouTube - local boys make good

Local Youth Pastor Mark Teeter, from Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, was at Lake Entiat on the Columbia River with a group of kids including Scott Holmdahl and Kennedy Small of Lake Forest Park. They were tubing, pulling Scott and Kennedy in giant inner tubes.

So now you need to watch the video - it's here

Mark posted the video soon after the trip, but when Ray William Johnson showcased it on his You Tube show "Ray It Ain't So" it went viral, racking up well over 50,000 hits.

Fame and fortune are following them, as Mark, Scott and Kennedy have sold limited rights to the video to The Sony Corporation and MTV for use in a commercial.

The boys are now officially paid actors. Watch for them.

One art show left this weekend

Did you make it to the Senior Center Holiday Show? How about St. Dunstan's Canterbury Faire?
You've got one more chance - don't waste it!

The Northwest Holiday Artists' Show, now in its 37th year at the Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Church, will be on Sunday, from 10 am to 5 pm at 8109 224the St SW, just a short distance up Hwy 99 into Snohomish County (turn left on 224th).

It's a spectacular event, pulling artists from all over Puget Sound in a wide variety of arts, both practical and decorative or both, like the wearable art.
There's an entire room of gourmet food, including chocolate sculpture pieces, apples, and pasta.

The white trees are candles - but who could burn them?

The big sellers this year are the glass artists but the returning favorites always do well, like the artist who make whimsical pieces to wear which honor different professions - teacher, nurse, letter carrier. There was a beautiful leaf vase meant to hang on the wall. Notecards, scarves, handmade soap - did I mention chocolate?

Several booths have creative jewelry, like these triangle earrings by Sarah Henderson.
Sunday is the last day of the show and then it will disappear into the mists, like Brigadoon, not to be seen for another year.

$2.00 donation includes free parking, refreshments, free childcare.

Tales of the City author to appear at Third Place Books Tuesday, November 9

The TV series of Tales of the City was good, but the books were even better.  Now Armistead Maupin is on tour with his newest book in the series, Mary Ann in Autumn, and one of his stops is Lake Forest Park's Third Place Books, 206-366-3333  He'll be reading and signing books on Tuesday, November 9, from 7-8 pm.

John Hartl, former theatre reviewer for our NewsPartner, the Seattle Times, reviewed Mary Ann in an article posted at the Seattle Times. Put "Mary Ann in Autumn" in the search box to read the whole article.
In Maupin's new book (Harper, 287 pp., $25.99), the aging heroine of this resilient and enjoyable series, 57-year-old Mary Ann Singleton (so wonderfully played by Laura Linney in the television version), is not in the best of health as she returns to San Francisco for the first time in a couple of decades.

She's left her unfaithful husband, she's facing an operation for uterine cancer (the doctor offers an appendectomy as a freebie), and she's desperately looking for a hint of homecoming as she climbs the weathered steps that intersect with her lost Barbary Lane wonderland.

"The past doesn't catch up with us," she thinks. "It escapes from us."

My vote was counted - was yours?

You can track the status of your ballot through the King County Elections website.

It's not quite as good as the UPS tracking system, but it tells you whether your ballot was received, and whether your signature was verified - which means that your vote was counted.

Go to the website, scroll down the right column to "Mail Ballot Tracking" "Track your ballot packet." Click and all you need to do is fill in your name and birth date. You don't even need that strip they make you tear off your ballot.

My ballot went in the Drop Box at Lake Forest Park City Hall on Sunday, October 31, and would have been picked up that evening.  Today it shows as verified. If this is a measure for the rest, most of the ballots should be counted in a couple of work days.

Chicago opens in Magnussen Park Friday, November 12

Roxie, Billy, and Velma.  Photo from SMT
Set in the Cook County Jail in the Roaring Twenties, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly vie for the full attention of the Press – and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn – as they prepare for two sensational murder trials.

Chicago is a rousing story of fame, corruption, fortune, manipulation and heartbreak … and all that jazz.

The vibrant musical Chicago (and all that jazz) will be staged by the Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) November 12 to December 4 at their new home in Magnusson Park, 7210 62nd Ave NE, Seattle 98115.

Advantages of the location are easy and ample parking and a mid-sized theatre with good line of sight seating.

Significantly different from the 2002 movie, the musical version employs a distinctly presentational and more abstract theatrical style. Many of the scenes are set “in limbo” and Dan Suiter’s set design and costume designer Deane Middleton’s costumes evoke the glitzy yet gritty Art Deco inspired Chicago of the 1920’s.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, Sundays at 2 pm, and Thursday, December 2 at 7:30 pm. Tickets $30-40. Student, Senior, and group discounts. Box office 206-363-2809, website.
