Spectacular half-time show at Shorewood-Shorecrest game

Saturday, September 25, 2010

The halftime show at Friday night's football game between Shorecrest and Shorewood at Shoreline Stadium was spectacular.

The two schools' bands, cheer leaders, flag squads, and drill squads combined to fill the field with color and music for a huge crowd of fans.

Here's a hint for viewing the photos: Shorewood Thunderbird colors are royal blue and deep green.

Shorecrest Highlanders wear green and gold kilts and play bagpipes (they also march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin, but that's a different story).

The bands were on the field at the same time.

Letter to the Editor: I urge you to vote yes for Proposition 1

To the Editor:

Shoreline has many fine parks, good streets, and safe neighborhoods. Most of all, we have many fine citizens who support each other and value our community. This fall we can maintain our excellent police, parks, and community services by voting yes for Proposition 1.

For a decade, the City of Shoreline has cut costs and kept tax increases at zero or one percent – far below inflation. Shoreline is one of the most efficient cities in the region, with fewer employees and lower costs than similar cities.

Proposition 1 is a maintenance and operations levy to pay for parks, police, and community services. It would cost the average homeowner $7.60 per month. For that price, our police will still be there when you call, our parks will be clean and safe, and we will have access to services in times of need. It’s a great value.

If it does not pass, the cost to our community would be enormous. The $14 million shortfall over six years would require drastic cuts in many basic services, such as closure of the Shoreline Pool, shutting down the East and West Police storefronts, eliminating School Resource Officers at Shorewood and Shorecrest, and reduced maintenance of parks and playfields. Cuts to our human services safety net could jeopardize funding for the Senior Center, the Center for Human Services, and recreational programs for youth and people with disabilities.

Of course these are tough economic times. I believe that when the times are tough, the tough get going. I feel that the citizens of Shoreline can pull together in any times. I urge you to vote yes for Proposition 1 to support basic services in Shoreline.

Shorewood swim team overwhelms opponents at September 23 meet

Prep swimming: Shorewood 157, Lynnwood 25, Meadowdale 43.

At Shoreline pool Thursday September 23
The Shorewood girls' swim team overwhelmed their opponents in a tri-meet. Although both Lynnwood and Meadowdale had some very good swimmers, the Tbird squad's talent and depth was too much for either team to overcome.

The scoring was based as if it were a dual meet with Lynnwood and Meadowdale against Shorewood only and not against each other.
Some of Shorewood's winners based on scoring against Lynnwood: 200 medley relay - Shorewood (Shelby Adams, Mia Young, Emily Blaylock, Megan Ransom); 200 freestyle- Anni Hecker; 200 individual medley - Mia Young; 50 freestyle- Alicia Hoverson; Diving- Sariha McIntyre; 100 butterfly-Emily Blaylock; 100 freestyle-Samantha Pridemore; 500 freestyle- Alicia Hoverson; 200 freestyle relay- Shorewood (Emily Blaylock, Annika Stenfjord, Tyanna DeNova, Anni Hecker); 100 backstroke- Elli McIntyre; 100 breaststroke- Jordon Mullen; 400 freestyle relay- Shorewood (Alicia Hoverson, Annika Stenfjord, Shelby Adams, Anni Hecker).
For the season Shorewood's record stands now at 3-0 in the league and 3-1 overall.

Shorecrest Girls’ Soccer Season Off to a Strong Start in Thursday game

Stories and Photos by Kim Josund

It was a nailbiter Thursday night, September 23, for high school girls’ soccer, when Shorecrest Varsity (pictured right at a Sept 7 game) went into overtime and then a shootout against Everett at Everett Memorial Stadium. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, and the teams held each other off for two 5-minute overtimes before lining up for the shootout. With players from each team scoring consecutively, it wasn’t until the final shot that the game was decided with Everett up by one. Shorecrest’s lone game goal was made by senior Nicole Harris. Shorecrest Girls’ Varsity Wesco 3A record now stands at 4 wins, 1 loss.

Entering this third week of season play, the Shorecrest team had four wins. In the season-opener against Oak Harbor, Shorecrest Senior Rachel Schrote snuck in a goal just before halftime, and it was enough to carry the Scots to a win 1-0 on September 9, on Whidbey Island. Two days later, Sophomore Sophia Flohr's goal in the 60th minute broke a scoreless tie as Shorecrest defeated Meadowdale 1-0 in the September 11th game at Shoreline Stadium. It was a big win for a young Shorecrest club coming together as a team.

With five Seniors, six Juniors, four Sophomores and four Freshman on the team, the Scots Varsity girls have worked hard for each victory. In their second week of play, Rachel Schrote again put in the one goal for the win 1-0 over Lynnwood. On September 16th, a goal in the first minute by Rachel Schrote added to two more by Senior Christina Jarvis and Freshman Maya Garber-Yonts to bring their 4th conference game win 3-1 over Mountlake Terrace. Shorecrest’s wins have been aided by strong defense, and solid goalie performances of Senior Chelsey Doyle, Sophomore Ashley Beason and Freshman Frida Swenson. The Scots Varsity girls are coached by Mindy Dalziel.

The Shorecrest Girls’ Junior Varsity team, coached by Drew Thompson, has had a solid start to the season as well, with three shutouts and two losses in conference play. The JV team has scored strongly against its opponents, led by high-scoring Junior Corrina Smith with 5 goals, seconded by Freshman Anisa Gomez with four goals. Other goals have been contributed by Junior Natalie Smith (3 goals), Freshman Erin Anderson (2 goals), Sophomore Leah Davis (2 goals), Junior Allison Ezeonwu (2 goals), Sophomore Annie Schlachter (2 goals) and Freshmen Anika Josund and Cali Gorney each with one goal. The JV team is anchored by goalie Willa Lerner with assistance from Frida Swenson.

The Shorecrest girls face off with their crosstown rivals, Shorewood, on Saturday the 25th at Shoreline Stadium. Shorewood Varsity is also coming into the game with four conference wins, including a 1-0 victory over Everett on Tuesday.

Home games are played at Shoreline Stadium, and the JV team usually plays at 5 pm with the Varsity game beginning at 7 pm. The schedule for upcoming games is available here.

Shoreline Proposition 1: City Statement

From the City of Shoreline webpage

Shoreline will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and we have a lot to celebrate! From the redevelopment of the Aurora Corridor to completion of the Parks Bond projects, from enhanced stormwater management systems to improved public safety, the City has transformed from an often neglected part of King County into a vibrant City that 93% of residents rate as an excellent or good place to live.

The transformation has occurred due to the hard work of Shoreline citizens and the prudent financial stewardship of past City Councils. However, even with conservative financial planning and spending policies, the City will begin facing significant budget gaps starting in 2011, jeopardizing many of the investments made in Shoreline's neighborhoods and community.

The simple reason for the budget gaps is that inflationary costs for fuel, asphalt, public safety, health benefits and other items are growing faster than the City's most important revenue sources. Property tax represents the single largest source of revenue for the City's general fund, but it is limited to a 1% increase per year. Inflation, on the other hand, has no limit. Since 2000, inflation has increased by 27%, while at the same time, the City's property tax levy, excluding new construction, has grown by less than 10%.

For more information and frequently asked questions about the proposition, see the city webpage

Citizens' committees have been formed to support and to oppose the Shoreline Proposition.

The Yes on Shoreline Prop 1 citizen committee statement has been published here.  Their webpage is SupportShoreline.org

Shorecrest, Shorewood take 4-2 soccer records into Saturday night game

Shorecrest and Shorewood both take 4-2 records into their 7 p.m. Saturday game at Shoreline Stadium.

The game will help determine at least a share of the Western Conference 3A division lead. Shorecrest, Shorewood and Glacier Peak all have 12 points going into Saturday games. Glacier Peak meets Everett Saturday.

Shorewood has a 4-0 Wesco 3A record after beating Everett 1-0 Tuesday. Shorecrest is 4-1 in the division after losing Thursday to Everett 2-1 in a shootout.

In Shorewood’s 1-0 win over Everett at Shoreline Stadium Tuesday, Jennifer Franklin broke a scoreless tie in the 30th minute with Lisa Echert’s assist to give the Thunderbirds the win. Goalie Kelsey Jang notched the shutout for Shorewood.

In Shorecrest’s 2-1 shootout loss at Everett Thursday, McKayla Fox of Everett saved a shot and kicked the winning penalty kick to give Everett a 5-3 advantage in the shootout and the win. After the Seagulls took the lead less than a minute into the game, the score remained 1-0 until Nicole Harris shot the equalizer on a free kick in the 42nd minute. Ashley Beeson and Frida Swensen played in goal for Shorecrest.

Meanwhile, King’s takes a 4-1-1 record (3-1, Cascade Conference) into a Tuesday home game with Archbishop Murphey. King’s comes off a 3=0 victory at Cedarcrest Thursday.

Olivia Baker recorded two goals for King’s in its Cascade Conference win over Cedarcrest. Beth Stella opened scoring in the seventh minute on a pass from Baker and Baker followed with goals in the 16th (Anna Diede assist) and 46th minute. Allison Monea earned the shutout in goal for King’s.

Vision House Jacob's Well Receives $266,000 Grant

From Vision House

The HEDCO Foundation recently provided the Vision House Jacob's Well project in Shoreline, Washington with a $266,000 contribution. The Foundation asked that dollars be earmarked to the development of the sewers, waterline extension and storm drainage. This is great news since the lack of an on-site fire hydrant and waterline has delayed the framing portion of the project.

In exchange for the generous contribution, the Jacob's Well group is honored to acknowledge the gift by naming the on-site community and service center after the foundation.

Ground breaking at Jacob's Well
"We are very excited about this generous grant! As you can imagine, asking contributors to help install sewers and other infrastructure improvements is a tough sell!" joked Susan Camerer, Vision House Executive Director.

"We are thrilled to be moving forward and now our next big push will be to raise the funds needed to purchase the lumber to begin framing the building."

More information about the Jacob's Well project and the upcoming dessert fundraising event October 16 at 7 pm can be found here: Building Hope One Board at a Time!

Update on the Shoreline Historical Museum

Friday, September 24, 2010

By Henry Reed, President, Board of Trustees
Shoreline Historical Museum

At its regular meeting, on September 15, the Board of Trustees of the Shoreline Historical Museum unanimously approved a motion to accept the Settlement Agreement with the Shoreline School District. The contents of this Agreement have already been reported or linked in this publication, but the main provisions include:

  • the deeding of the Ronald School to the School District;
  • the Museum completely vacating the Ronald Building by February 1, 2011;
  • payment of $852,500 by the District to the Museum (74% of the appraised value of the Ronald Building), with $200,000 of that sum to be held back until final departure;
  • the Museum’s use of (the closed) Sunset Elementary School for storage purposes for at least one year;
  • the signing of a statement of support for the Shorewood High School Project. This document states, “This is to advise the City of Shoreline and the Shoreline Landmarks Commission that the Shoreline Historical Museum supports the applications of the Shoreline School District for a conditional use permit and for a certificate of appropriateness for the Shorewood High School Project. This support is based upon the understanding that the Shorewood High School Project will include, as part of the Project, the preservation of the north, east and west facades of the Ronald School Building.”

The September 15 Board meeting for the Museum was very emotional. Just prior to the meeting, one of our strongest, most experienced Board members resigned from the Board because he knew that the outcome of that meeting might place him in conflict professionally. In the end, the remaining Board members had consensus that, having been unable to purchase our 0.4 acre “footprint” portion of the Shorewood site, or a portion of the adjacent Shell station, this was the best remaining option.

Many of our faithful supporters had wanted us to hold out, so as to purchase the Museum “footprint”, but the clear advice of our attorney was to not follow that high-risk strategy. The Museum’s lease on its “footprint” site was to run out in March, 2014, and the whole property would go back to the District. In addition, the District, under special conditions, had the legal right to “repossess” the Ronald Building.

We at the Museum hope that the new Shorewood High School will be built on schedule, as planned, with all of the promised funds from the State. At least the exterior of the Ronald School will be retained as a reminder of its former grandeur, and the Museum has a small "nest egg" with which to begin a fundraising for the purchase of a new home.

Local playwright opens comedy Thursday, September 30 in North City

Thursday, September 23, 2010

Bobbie is going crazy! After a dreary day of cutting out patterns for Mother's new quilt, and dodging her hints to wear pink, Bertram is coming to visit! Which means a looong evening of pouring him whiskeys, holding his hat and listening to his homilies on the virtues of brushing one's teeth! If that weren't enough, her kooky metrosexual neighbor is all too willing to treat her to his dabblings in the Grand Unified Theory of matter, embracing androgyny, and the merits of marinated asparagus. Join this whimsical romp that celebrates the adventure of finding one's art - and love - in all too unexpected ways!
Edmonds author Jeff Stillwell's play "A Dropped Stitch" is performed in the intimate atmosphere of the New Space Theatre just north of the intersection of NE 175 and 15 NE in North City. His light-hearted comedies are just the thing for an overcast Northwest evening. For more information, call 425-776-3778 or visit the NewClassicsTheatre website.
