Letter to the Editor: dedicated SESPA members are invested in their jobs

To the Editor:

Members of SESPA are the thread that holds the fabric of the garment of the Shoreline School District together. Over the past 6 years the District, or garment, has told us that we have to use fewer and fewer stitches to hold our garment together. SESPA agreed to fewer stitches and an inferior garment for the short term because administration said when there was money, our garment would again become the strong, sturdy garment it once was.

To date, the District is strong financially. Yet administration continues to whittle away positions that support the strong model that the Shoreline voting public passed last February and expected to be implemented. If only the voters could be knowledgeable about what’s happening in their district. The garment, the Shoreline District, could and should be walking down the national runway as it did years ago. Our nation then rated Shoreline as one of the best.

Administration has repeatedly eliminated cost of living raises to SESPA members who have lost 10% in COLAs the past 4 years. Additionally, we haven’t had a salary increase in the past 2 years. Why single out the lowest paid of all district employees to push them further into the working poor?

Administration continues to try to reduce work hours of Nurses, Library Techs, Security Guards, Behavior Techs, and has reduced hours of staff in Resource Rooms, English Language Learners, and Title programs. This, all while saying “this will not impact the children or the quality of their education”. HA! Ask the certificated staff—they will inform you of the impact!

These dedicated SESPA members are invested in their jobs. They give many “volunteer” hours to make sure things are ready for all children of our district. Most SESPA members live within Shoreline and all encouraged the public to VOTE FOR SHORELINE SCHOOLS!

Shoreline Administration PLEASE give SESPA employees a fair contract so both parties can be proud of working together as adults. Stop the bullying and sew our district back into the strong, powerful, admirable, storm-worthy garment of times gone by.

Echo Cove Bypass and Echo Lake Trunk Replacement under construction

Ronald Wastewater District currently has the Echo Cove Bypass and Echo Lake Trunk Replacement under construction between Aurora Ave and the west shoreline of Echo Lake. Buno Construction, LLC is the contractor for both projects.

Photo courtesy Ronald Wastewater. Workers from Buno Construction install the 18” ductile iron sewer main approximately 25 feet deep along North 195th St next to Echo Cove Condominiums as part of the Echo Cove Bypass project.

The Echo Cove Bypass project consists of installing approximately 900 feet 18” sewer mains around the perimeter of the Echo Cove Condominiums by open trench excavation to connect 2 existing sewer mains and reduce flows in the sewer main located directly below the Echo Cove Condominiums. When completed, the project will connect the sewer mains in Aurora Ave to the Echo Lake Trunk and reduce the flows under the Echo Lake Condominiums by over 90%. Once flows are reduced in the sewer mains under the buildings, the existing pipe under the buildings will be slip lined with 12” high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. This project will include work within Aurora Ave.

Photo courtesy Ronald Wastewater.  Silt fence is installed prior to beginning construction on the Echo Lake Trunk Replacement in front of the Echo Shores Condominiums. To date, no silt plumes from construction have been found in Echo Lake.

The Echo Lake Trunk Replacement project consists of replacing over 2,000 feet of existing 14” and 15” sewer mains around and downstream of Echo Lake with 20” HDPE pipe installed by pipebursting. Additionally, work will include replacing up to 14 side sewer stubs and 19 side sewers at no additional cost to the property owners. Pipe will be replaced along the west and north shorelines of Echo Lake, between North 204th Place and North 205th Street and immediately south of North 205th Street at the King County Wastewater Ballinger Pump Station.

Five Shoreline students honored as 2009-10 Writers In The Schools

Five students from Room Nine Community School have been selected for publication in the 2009-10 Writers in the Schools (WITS) best-of anthology.

The students are Emily Barry, Cymbeline Burgess, Matthew Edwards, Nico Herbert, and one more student who has requested to be published anonymously.

To celebrate the publication of this year's anthology, You Will Not Come Back Unchanged--a title that came from a line in Emily's poem—Writers in the Schools is hosting a book launch and signing at 7 pm on September 22 in the Plestcheeff Auditorium at the Seattle Art Museum. All published students are invited to read their work.  The event is free and open to the public.

Each student will receive two complimentary copies of the anthology, and Room Nine will receive a classroom set. Additional copies will be available for a suggested donation of $10.

Writers in the Schools (WITS) matches a local creative writer with a public elementary, middle or high school to design innovative and culturally relevant lesson plans that meet the goals of the participating classes while engaging students. The program invigorates both students and teachers with fresh ideas and encouragement. Teachers report students' quality of writing improves, and they become more confident in expressing themselves.

Students from twenty-one schools in the greater Seattle area are represented in the anthology.

Founded in 1987, Seattle Arts and Lectures is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to spark the imagination through programs that connect people and ideas. In addition to presenting today's foremost fiction and nonfiction writers, Seattle Arts and Lectures' events and courses illuminate arts, culture, and a world of ideas. Letter to the Editor: we don't have room for bigots

To The Editor,

On September 19 you carried a notice for a Shoreline Caucus meeting featuring Shahram Hadian and Act! for America. This is indeed America, and one of our traditions I rejoice in is the vigorous exercise of freedom of expression - even if this expression is strong and offensive. Indeed, even Nazi Party marches are protected. However, just because some expression is protected does not mean it is worthy of being promoted. I would hope that the Shoreline Area News would refrain from promoting a Nazi march.

You are approaching this standard with your promotion of the Shoreline Caucus meeting. I will quote a single line from the announcement:

Their message is clear – with the election approaching, we must elect legislators who respect all individuals and faiths, but who clearly see the long-term danger posed by Islam, and who are willing to stand up to political correctness and work for the Founders’ vision of America.

This is an unacceptable example of sheer bigotry. Can you even imagine publishing this notice if the faith, "Islam," were replaced by another faith such as "Judaism," "Catholicism," or "LDS?" One thing all of these faiths have in common with Islam is their believers have at one time or another been oppressed in the United States.

We are a tolerant community in Shoreline (and parts north - I live in Edmonds). In the same issue you note approvingly how the community supports Tent City, the homeless encampment. We don't have any room for bigots here, and it is never being overly politically correct to call them by their name.

Police action in Meridian Park neighborhood on Saturday, September 18

We received this report from a SAN reader:

There were a large number of King County Sheriff, City Police and Emergency medical vehicles on my street today (Saturday, September 18) - 171st/Ashworth. Also numerous SWAT team members. The bordering streets were blocked off to incoming traffic for several hours.

According to Sgt. John Urquhart of the Sheriff's office, King County Patrol officers went to the 1300 block of N 169 to arrest a 42 year-old man for a domestic violence assault.

He would not come out and has been armed in the past so we got a warrant to go in and get him. However he surrendered before we went in. The incident started at 10:40 am and ended well at 1:00 pm. Nobody hurt.

SCC Men’s Soccer Drops Two Games Over the Weekend

2010 Men's Soccer Team. Photo by Wilson Tsoi.
The struggling Shoreline Community College men’s soccer team dropped two more games over the weekend, being blanked by the top ranked Walla Walla Community College on Friday and dropping a 4-2 game to Treasure Valley on Saturday. On Friday, the Dolphins played well in the first half, going into halftime tied at 0-0, but the defending NWAACC champions came out smoking in the second half, scoring 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the period. The first half against Treasure Valley was a see-saw affair, as TVCC scored first, to be answered by SCC, TVCC scored again and again answered by SCC, but then TVCC scored again before half-time and again in the second half, but Shoreline had no answers to those goals.

Shoreline is now 0-6 on the season and 0-3 in the Northern Region. SCC travels to Wenatchee Valley CC on Saturday in their next game.
