Attention ABBA fans - 21 greatest hits in concert at NPAC

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

ABBA MANIA, a spectacular recreation of the last live concert by Swedish disco sensation ABBA, appears on stage at the Northshore Performing Arts Center, 18125 92nd Ave NE, Bothell, on Friday, September 24, at 7:30 pm.

ABBA MANIA features nine musicians and singers performing 21 of ABBA's greatest hits including "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," Voulez Vous," "Waterloo," "Fernando," "Take A Chance On Me," "Super Trouper," and "The Winner Takes It All." Costume changes, choreography, a live band, and back-up singers recreate all the elements that made ABBA one of the most unforgettable pop bands in history.

In the early '80s ABBA disbanded and went their own ways, but the success of their album ABBA Gold continued, topping the charts well into the '90s and remaining one of the biggest selling albums ever.

This is a one-night-only, live performance at NPAC. Ticket prices are Adult $40, Senior $35, and $15 for Youth under age 17. Tickets are available online or by calling the NPAC Foundation Ticket Line at 425-408-7988.

County Council celebrates Shoreline’s 15th Anniversary of Incorporation

Monday, September 13, 2010

King County Councilmember Bob Ferguson presented the proclamation to (L to R) Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan and Councilmembers Shari Winstead and Chris Eggen”

The Metropolitan King County Council recognized the 15th anniversary of the incorporation of the city of Shoreline today. Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan, along with Shoreline City Councilmembers Chris Eggen and Shari Winstead received the recognition, presented by Council Chair Bob Ferguson.

“Shoreline’s citizens and officials have worked hard to develop the city’s reputation for strong neighborhoods, excellent schools, and abundant parks,” said Council Chair Bob Ferguson, who represents Shoreline on the County Council. “It is not surprising that Shoreline is receiving national attention for being a great place to live.”

Shoreline has been locally and nationally recognized as a great place to live, most recently as one of only two Washington cities in Money Magazine’s “2010 Best Places to Live” list.

“I am proud to be serving as Shoreline’s Mayor as it celebrates its 15th anniversary of becoming a city,” said Mayor McGlashan. “We look forward to developing the relationship between Shoreline and King County, and thank the County Council for this recognition.”

In 1944, the local school district adopted the name “Shoreline” to describe its community, nestled “shore-to-shore” between Puget Sound and Lake Washington and “line-to-line” from the northern city and county boundaries. Citizens organized to form the City of Shoreline, which was incorporated on August 31, 1995.

Today, Shoreline is a dynamic and diverse community of over 54,000 residents, making it the 15th largest city in the state and the 7th largest in King County. In the years since its incorporation, Shoreline has invested significantly in civic improvement projects, including the award-winning Aurora Corridor Project, the expansion and improvement of its park system through a city parks bond, and the development of a new city hall and civic center.

“I am delighted the County Council took the time to acknowledge this important milestone in our city’s history,” said Councilmember Chris Eggen. “Shoreline is a unique community and a wonderful place to live.”

“Shoreline is a great place to live and I am thrilled to be able to call it home. As someone who used to work at the County Council, I appreciate the Council’s recognition of Shoreline’s accomplishments over the last 15 years,” said Councilmember Shari Winstead. “Partnering with the county to help make the city’s dollars go further, as we did with Cromwell Park, is critical to providing important services to our citizens.”

Dick's Online Customer Poll Crosses 100,000 Vote Threshold

Dick's Drive-In Restaurants announced today that 100,000 people have voted on where to build the next Dick's Drive-In. The company plans to extend the customer poll until Sunday, September 19 at their website.

Vote breakdown as of Monday, September 13 at 12:30 pm:
  • 47 percent (48,438 votes) for North -- Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, Edmonds, and South Everett
  • 28 percent (28,297 votes) for South -- West Seattle, South Seattle, Burien, SeaTac, and Tukwila
  • 25 percent (25,098 votes) for East -- Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Bothell, Mercer Island, Issaquah, and Sammamish
The high numbers for the north may be a result of serious lobbying by the town of Mountlake Terrace.  See the article Mayor Jerry Smith working hard to bring Dick's to Mountlake Terrace in the MLTNews.com

A more influential announcement may have been part of the cause for the jump in north end votes for the new Dick's Drive In location.

On September 1, Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon made an announcement to all county employees and county residents (those who sign up for county emails especially) to vote for Dick's in the North End. His announcement was widely covered in Snohomish county news and radio and included the voting link.

Dick's Drive-In owners are ecstatic at all the free publicity.
"The voting participation has wildly exceeded our expectations," says Jim Spady, vice president of Dick's Drive-In Restaurants and son of co-founder and namesake, Dick Spady. "We are now over the 100,000 and counting, and continue to be amazed by the outpouring of enthusiasm for our new restaurant project. People have been sharing their love for Dick's burgers, shakes, and fries."
Spady says that once the final votes are officially tallied, an announcement will be made along with the winners of the Dick's video contest.
"We take what our customers say to heart, and the online poll winner will be a top consideration as we move the site selection process forward," Spady says. Spady added that he expects an announcement before the end of the year.
The first Dick's Drive-In was founded in 1954, expanding to 5 restaurants in Seattle until 1974 with the Queen Anne Dick's. The new drive-in will be the first built in 36 years and will maintain the restaurant's iconic 1950s look and architecture.

Senator Fairley announces the winners of her contest for favorite non-profits

As announced in the ShorelineAreaNews on July 25 of this year, retiring Senator Darlene Fairley said she would award $2500 from her unused campaign funds to a non-profit organization, based on nominations from readers.  So, in Sen. Fairley's words:

And the winner is---

After 107 entries from my constituents (I decided not to count entries from people outside my district.) asking me to give the money to 32 different non-profits, I decided that I needed a 1st place ($2500), a 1st runner up ($1000) and an honorable mention ($500) category.

So...

Though I didn't realize it until after picking them for first place, and it wasn't a criteria, the North Helpline Emergency Services and Food Bank did receive more nominations than any of the others.

Mary's Place had several people who wrote very eloquent emails telling me about the work of Mary's Place--a day shelter for homeless women and their children.

I awarded the Stewardship Foundation $500 in honor of the work they have done with the Grace Cole park and in memory of my former colleague.

I was also very impressed with Vision House: Jacob's Well, under construction in Shoreline, just off Ballinger Way.  If it had already been in operation, it would have been a serious contender.

My thanks to everyone who wrote to tell me about the important nonprofit organizations that so many of you are giving your time and money to support.  Your messages were passionate and heartfelt and your commitment to the community is impressive. I have always been proud to be your representative in the state legislature.

The seattlepi.com editorial board is seeking advice on which candidates to endorse in the 32nd District and seven nearby legislative districts.

You can write prospective editorials for the candidates of your choice by going to the website, signing in and posting your editorial. If you don’t yet have a seattlepi.com account, you'll have to register first.

The website specifically mentioned the contest for the open 32nd District State Senate seat between Democrat Maralyn Chase and Republican David Baker among interesting races.

In the interest of full disclosure the site asks that people with a connection to a campaign or a party to say that, adding “This does not in any way disqualify you from participation.”

Community meeting to update residents on southeast subarea plan

From the City of Shoreline

The City of Shoreline and the Briarcrest and Ridgecrest Neighborhood Associations invite you to a Community Meeting being held on Tuesday, September 21, from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 14901 30th Ave NE.

The purpose of the meeting is to update residents on the progress of the Southeast Neighborhoods Subarea Plan that was adopted by a Citizen’s Advisory Committee in November of 2009 and by City Council in May of 2010.

Over the coming months, this Subarea Plan will be implemented through the creation of a zoning map and changes to the Development Code, so it is important that neighbors understand the process, terminology and decisions to be made so that they may advocate for the options they desire and make reasoned arguments against elements they dislike.

Toward that end, staff will give a short presentation on the process to date, clarify some confusing land use terms, provide an outline for moving forward, and devote a significant amount of time to answering questions.

Anyone with questions before or after the meeting should contact Miranda Redinger at 206-801-2513 or mredinger@shorelinewa.gov.

The website for the project also contains background information, committee meeting minutes, and the adopted Subarea Plan document.

SE Subarea of Shoreline
Boundaries (and areas that were designated “Special Study Areas”) are on the map. The western boundary is 8th Ave, the southern one is 145th and the eastern one is Lake City/Bothell Way.

Overview and History

Portions of the Briarcrest and Ridgecrest neighborhoods are designated as "Special Study Areas." Properties in special study areas have zoning, but do not have accompanying Comprehensive Plan designations; i.e., no long-range vision. The purpose of the Southeast Neighborhoods Subarea Plan is to rectify the lack of direction in the existing Comprehensive Plan Map.

When the official City Comprehensive Zoning Map was adopted by Ordinance 292 on January 7, 2002, several segments were designated as Special Study Areas. The designation was intended to be a place-holder until the areas could be analyzed in further detail to determine a long-range vision. Two of these are the Briarcrest Special Study Area and the Paramount Special Study Area (located in the Ridgecrest neighborhood).

The City of Shoreline formed a citizen advisory committee to work with staff to develop a subarea plan to provide proper study of these areas, propose a long-range vision, implement zoning (if different than the current zoning) and develop code modifications.

The study area boundaries cover approximately half of the Briarcrest neighborhood and a portion of the Ridgecrest neighborhood, hence the name Southeast Neighborhoods Subarea Plan. Most of this area is defined as a "special study area," except for parcels between 30th Avenue NE and Bothell Way and between 8th and 15th Avenues NE which have existing Comprehensive Plan designations.
