Rev-It-Up for Kids motorcycle rally, Saturday, September 11, in Renton

Rev-It-Up for Kids is a community fundraiser for kids and families served by Atlantic Street Center in Seattle.

The event will be held at the Renton Motorcycle Company, 3701 East Valley Road, Renton, on Saturday, September 11, 9 am to 5 pm. For registration and event information check the website.

Organized by Shoreline resident Leonard Elion, the family-friendly event includes a rally, live bands, booths, barbecue, games for kids - and a bike show.

It will open with a ceremony with military color guards honoring the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001.

“It’s about coming together as a community and helping our children and families” says Shoreline resident Edith Elion, executive director of Atlantic Street Center. Each year, the awareness raised by this event helps provide services to more than 3,000 children and families in Seattle.

Leonard Elion bought his bike, a Honda Shadow, as a celebration of his 50th birthday, eight years ago.

This is his 6th year coordinating the event with Renton Motorcycles, Seattle Magic Wheels Motorcycle Club, and the Sojourner Truth Circle of Mount Zion Church.

He says, "Atlantic Street Center does great work in our community. It provides an array of comprehensive services to support families in areas of need and weakness-from early childhood education and parent training, to counseling, to helping and encouraging grandparents raise their grandchildren.

"For a $15 motorcycle registration fee, each participant truly helps Seattle’s children and families thrive."

Letter to the Editor: We will not be bullied

To the Editor:

On Wednesday, Sept. 8, the 32nd District Democrats voted on a NO Vote on Prop #1. The motion was brought by Wendy DiPeso. The vote was 15 yes for the negative motion (to oppose) to 14 no (to validate the proposition) with, I believe, six abstentions.

Under the rules of the 32nd District Democrats, all members are eligible to vote. This means that Esperance in Snohomish County, LFP residents, Kenmore and Finn Hill members were allowed to vote.

The majority of Shoreline residents compose the 14 opposed to the motion. In other words, the citizens of Shoreline overwhelmingly support the Proposition #1 for the Levy-Lid lift to ensure that our city has the operating funds to maintain services in the next six years.

The vote was skewed by residents who reside in LFP, where they led a fight to fail their Prop #1 Levy Lid lift and to place their city in financial jeopardy as deep cuts have been mandated in citywide services.

Our Shoreline citizens have had many opportunities to attend educational forums where City staff members have explained the needs and provided charts and graphs to explain the complex city funding. Debbie Tarry, finance director, has given powerpoint demonstrations on Channel 21 during televised city council meetings.

We will not be bullied into placing our city in financial jeopardy. Our citizens will overwhelmingly support the levy-lid lift by voting YES on Proposition #1. We want to maintain our beautiful parks, our streets and the safety of our citizens.

La Nita Jordan Wacker

Light rail or something else? Along Interstate 5? 15th NE? Aurora?

By Brian Doennebrink

Sound Transit staff wants your ideas for extending mass transit from Northgate to Lynnwood, appearing at Echo Lake Neighborhood’s monthly meeting, Tuesday, September 21, Shoreline City Hall, 175th and Midvale, 7-9 pm. All are invited.

Many are no doubt expecting that this is a “done deal,” Northgate to Lynnwood along Interstate 5, light rail, with four stations, Shoreline’s at N. 185th, but none of this is necessarily so. As part of the requirements for the obtaining a federal grant towards the project, an “alternatives analysis” is required, including comparing different mass transit options, e.g. bus rapid transit and light rail, and different corridors, e.g. Interstate 5, 15th NE, and Aurora.

What Sound Transit staff and ultimately their Board members are hoping to find out is what do you want the system to do for you? What options should be looked at? If there are stations, where should they be? What are the obstacles and considerations involved?

Formal meetings will occur on:
  • October 7 (Ingraham High School, North Seattle),
  • October 12 (Lynnwood Convention Center),
  • October 14 (Shoreline Center) from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., with a presentation beginning at 6:45 p.m. that’s followed by a workshop.

To request accommodations for persons with disabilities: 1-800-201-490 /TTY Relay: 711 or email. For more information or to arrange an interpreter: 1-800-823-9230 during regular business hours. More information online. Free email updates from the webpage.

Submit comments through their web questionnaire or by email or by mail to Roger Iwata, Sound Transit, 401 S Jackson St., Seattle 98104 or by phone: Roger Iwata at 206-689-4904.
