Coming soon to a freeway near you - smart signs

Friday, September 10, 2010

Smarter Highway signs.  Courtesy WSDOT.

The latest traffic technology aimed at increasing safety and reducing collisions is coming soon to State Route 520. Beginning Friday, September 10, drivers will see activity on new electronic signs installed on SR 520 between 130th Ave NE in Bellevue and I-5 in Seattle.

Drivers can expect to see a series of test sequences – symbols or letters – on the new electronic signs during testing. Drivers do not need to take any action when they see the test sequences on the signs. Traffic engineers need to test the new signs to make sure they are ready for around-the-clock operations. The testing is a visible heads up to drivers that the signs should be activated later this fall.

This latest addition of smarter highways technology is part of the SR 520/I-90 Active Traffic Management Project which adds electronic speed-limit and lane status signs to SR 520 and I-90 between Bellevue and Seattle. The signs will alert drivers to reduce their speed or change lanes when there are collisions or backups on the road.

Shorewood’s, Shorecrest’s new league gets six District spots in most sports

By Evan Smith

The new Western Conference 3A Division that includes Shorecrest, Shorewood and teams from six other high schools will have six places in eight-team Northwest District 3A tournaments in most sports.

In basketball, soccer, baseball, softball and volleyball, the top six of the eight Wesco 3A teams and the top two of the three Northwest League 3A teams will play in eight-team Northwest District 3A tournaments. Eight-entry tennis tournaments will have six singles players and six doubles teams from the Wesco 3A and two each from the Northwest League 3A division.

In track, Wesco will get nine entries and the Northwest League three entries in each individual District event, with four spots awarded based on times and distances, and all schools will get relay entries. Swimming entries will be based on time. Each school will enter a team in cross-country and golf.

The new Wesco 3A Division came about when Shorewood, Mountlake Terrace and Oak Harbor dropped from the 4A classification to join Shorecrest, Everett, Glacier Peak, Lynnwood and Meadowdale in the 3A division. Northwest League 3A schools are Ferndale, Mount Vernon and Sedro Woolley.

Last year, the Northwest District’s 14 4A schools got three places in 16-team state tournaments, and eight 3A schools got two spots. With the moves, the 11 District teams in each classification deserve more than two spots but not three.

The 4A schools – Arlington, Cascade, Edmonds-Woodway, Jackson, Kamiak, Lake Stevens, Mariner, Marysville-Pilchuck, Monroe, Snohomish and Stanwood – will combine their two and a half entries with the Sea-King District for bi-district tournaments with five state berths. The Northwest 3A schools found no logical partner; so they will have two state slots one year of the two-year classification cycle and three the other.

Four Northwest District 3A football teams will play November 5-6 with teams from the Sea-King, West Central and Southwest districts for entry into 16-team state playoffs, The four will be the top two Wesco teams, the top Northwest League team and the winner of a mid-week playoff game between the Wesco #3 team and the Northwest League #2 team.

The Wesco 3A division will grow to nine teams in the second year of the cycle, when the new Marysville-Getchell High School moves to 3A competition.

Women Helping Women: Shoreline “Sleep-Out” will turn tents into homes

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Shoreline Covenant Church
The "Turning Tents into Homes" event will be held from Friday, September 24 at 7 pm until 8 am Saturday, September 25 at the Shoreline Covenant Church, 1330 N 185th St, Shoreline 98133. 206-542-1050

Women and friends of Shoreline Covenant Church are turning tents into homes for women and children in Shoreline by raising money to buy lumber for Jacob's Well-a transitional housing complex, being constructed by Vision-House, for homeless women and children. Anyone interested in participating can contact the church to bring a tent and pledges from friends, neighbors, family and co-workers and spend one night in solidarity with women who struggle every night to find a safe and dry and warm place to sleep with their kids. The sleep-over will end on Saturday morning with breakfast served at 8 am.

Participants will "sleep-out" in their tents in the church parking lot to raise at least $4,000 in pledges. There is a donor willing to match that dollar for dollar, so if forty women participate and each raise $100 (that's only ten people giving $10 or twenty-five people each "buying" one $4 board), $4,000 can turn into $8,000 and make a serious dent in the $160,000 Vision House needs to frame Jacob's Well before winter.

Pledge $4 a plank or make a flat donation in any amount. Make checks to Shoreline Covenant Church, note “Shoreline Sleep-Out” in the memo line. To donate online, visit the Vision House website and scroll down to the bottom of the page to “other amount” and make a note in the comments field with “Shoreline Sleep-Out”.

Questions? Call or email Pastor Erika at 206-542-1050.
Together we can help some of our most hidden and vulnerable homeless: moms and kids.

32nd District Democrats narrowly vote to oppose Shoreline Proposition 1

After an hour-long forum at the September meeting of the 32nd District Democrats, members narrowly voted to oppose Shoreline Proposition 1, which will be on the November ballot. The Proposition asks the citizens' approval to raise property taxes above the one percent mandated by Tim Eyman's tax initiatives.

The resolution to oppose the Proposition was introduced by Wendy diPeso, who said that we did not need another regressive tax, particularly in this economy. The resolution to oppose Proposition passed 15 to 14. About one-third of those voting indicated they did not live in Shoreline. The 32nd legislative district includes part of Edmonds, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and Finn Hill.

Wanted: sports reports

There are four high schools in our area: Shorecrest, Shorewood, Shoreline Christian, and King's High School. They all have sports programs, with major and minor sports.

We can't be there for all those events and games, but we would still like to bring the information to the community via the SAN.

If you are at any of the games or events, please consider sending us information. It can be as simple as the school, game, and score. If you have a camera and can send a picture, so much the better. It would be good to tell us who's in the picture and where.

If you can commit to covering one sport for one school, that would be great. If you just attend a few games but will send us information, that's great too.

Evan Smith: School District hasn’t given date for eviction of Museum

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

The Shoreline School District has told the Shoreline Historical Museum that it will have to leave the Ronald School Building that the Museum has occupied for 35 years.

Museum officials tell me that they don’t know when they will need to leave or where they will go.

Museum Director Vicki Stiles told me last week that the School District has offered the Museum temporary storage space for its collections at the former Sunset School, a building that is scheduled to be torn down, with the land to be developed into a Shoreline City park.

Stiles said that the Museum is searching for a new site.

Shoreline School Public Information Officer Craig Degginger recently wrote in the Richmond Beach Community News that the School District “will now return to its original plan of including the historic Ronald School building as part of a new Shorewood High School.”

The School District said last year that the Museum would have to leave the site, which would be incorporated into a rebuilt Shorewood High School. This led to opposition to a February bond issue to rebuild both Shorewood and Shorecrest high schools.

Then, the School District and the Museum board announced an “agreement in principal” under which the School District would allow the Museum to keep the building and move it to a nearby site in exchange for the Museum’s supporting the bond issue, The bond issue passed with a 62 percent “yes” vote, 426 votes more than the 60 percent needed.
The Museum hoped to buy land east of the Museum parking lot, land that has now been sold to a different buyer.
Degginger’s news release said, “Despite repeated efforts over the past five months, the Shoreline School District and the Shoreline Historical Museum, currently housed in the Ronald School, have not been able to finalize the agreement to relocate the building to an adjacent site,” adding that the District would return to its earlier plan to “incorporate” the Ronald building into the Shorewood design, ”honoring, preserving and restoring the original school building, while bringing the unreinforced brick masonry building up to code and making it a safe structure for student use.

“After both the Museum board and the Shoreline School Board approved the ‘Agreement in Principle’ in January, and voters approved the February 9, 2010, bond measure to replace both Shorewood and Shorecrest High Schools, the District directed the Bassetti Architects to develop a new architectural design for the Shorewood that did not incorporate the Ronald School into the project, assuming that the building would be moved from the property. Since that time Bassetti staff has worked on the new plan exclusively.
“Representatives from the Museum and the School District have met several times since the February election to discuss the agreement to move the Ronald School.

“In a surprise move on June 1, the Museum Board legally appealed the District’s Determination of Non-Significance (DNS) under the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) process related to relocating the Ronald School building to an adjacent site.

“As efforts to purchase the necessary adjacent property by the Museum stalled, July 1 was determined by the District to be the last possible date to direct the architects to return to the pre-February 2010 design plans, which incorporated the Ronald School into the Shorewood design.

“’Any further delay in this decision will most certainly disrupt the design, construction timeline, and threatens the significant state funding of approximately $17 million associated with the replacement of Shorewood High School,’ said Superintendent Sue Walker.

“Consistent with the District’s previous communications on the subject, the District clarified three items that needed to be in place by July 1 in order for the District to know there is a good faith effort and/or the ability on the part of the Museum to execute the ‘Agreement in Principle’ reached
in January. The three items were:

1. A signed purchase agreement on a piece of property adjacent to the Shorewood site.
2. A signed legal agreement with the District stipulating all of the necessary conditions to be met outlined in the ‘Agreement in Principle’ and discussed at the meeting.
3. A written withdrawal of the SEPA appeal“

Donated Metro van for Parks department

Senior Center van from previous donation
Bob Ferguson, King County Council chair and representative for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, has secured a retired Metro van for the Shoreline Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department. The van will transport children, teens, and people with disabilities to programs both in Shoreline and around King County.
“The Shoreline Parks Department provides valuable services to the residents of Shoreline, and now even more individuals will benefit from the good work of this agency,” said Ferguson. “This van will provide residents with disabilities and kids with a new way to participate in various community programs or enjoy the great outdoors.”
The city of Shoreline Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department operates 28 parks covering more than 380 acres and a variety of recreational and educational programs for citizens of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.
“Finding the means to transport participants to our adult programs, summer camps, and field trips to local parks and libraries, can be a challenge,” said Dick Deal, the Director of Shoreline Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services. “This van is a much needed resource.”
The retired vans have been part of Metro Transit’s vanpool fleet for at least six years and have reached the end of their service life. When the vans reach this age, they are considered surplus.

Since 1995, the County Council has been donating retired vans from Metro’s VanPool program to local nonprofit organizations to provide transportation for the disabled, low-income, young adults, and senior citizens. The groups are responsible for licensing, insuring and maintaining the vehicles. Ferguson's office previously secured a donated van for the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center.

Portraits of Men, Metaphors of Wood opens Sept 10 at SCC Gallery

Portraits of Men, Metaphors of Wood: Doubt oil on canvas, 28” x 32”, 2002

A new gallery exhibit opens at the SCC Gallery on September 10 and runs to October 25.

Featuring a series of portraits by Suzanne Brooker, each contains an element of wood, from a toothpick to a root ball, to create a metaphor or visual dynamic that reflects the character of each individual portrait.

Each painting utilizes an in-direct (Old Master) painting approach to create layers of transparent color in rendering the figures while the backgrounds of abstracted space are filled with patterns of wood grain or spinning objects like wood screws or holly leaves, juxtaposing the natural and man-made objects.

An artist reception will be held from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, October 9 in the SCC Gallery.

Brooker is a teaching artist at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle and author of “Portrait Painting Atelier: Old Mater Techniques and Contemporary Applications,” (Watson-Guptil).

The Shoreline Community College Gallery, located in the 1000 Building (Administration Building) on the south end of campus, is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Shoreline Community College is located at 16101 Greenwood Avenue North, just west of Aurora Avenue.
