TOP Food & Drug Raising Funds for Seattle Children’s Hospital

Saturday, May 29, 2010

By Dave Brumbaugh

Shoppers who buy some special balloons in June can help bring a smile and much needed care to young patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

TOP Food and Drug stores in Washington are offering Miracle Balloons from June 2-15 as a fundraiser for Seattle Children’s Hospital. Sales of the $1 paper balloons, available at store checkstands, will support uncompensated care, enabling children to receive medical care regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Seattle Children’s Hospital will provide over $100 million in uncompensated care this year

Also, TOP Food and Drug stores are offering barbecued hot dogs and chips in their parking lots from 11 am to 4 pm Saturday, June 5. Donations from the barbecue event also will go to Seattle Children’s.

The Shoreline Top Food store is located at Midvale N and N 185th, one block east of Aurora.

“Seattle Children’s provides tremendous care to so many families in our region,” said Becky Skaggs, spokesperson for TOP Food and Drug. “All of these small contributions add up and result in helping many children.”

Founded in 1907, Seattle Children’s serves as the pediatric referral center for Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Montana. For more information, visit their website.

Haggen, Inc. operates 33 supermarkets in Washington and Oregon under the TOP Food and Drug and Haggen Food and Pharmacy names. Syre Brownie Troop honored as Earth Heroes in Schools

Photo: The Syre Brownie Troop with King County Executive Dow Constantine and Troop 41245 leader Michele Earl-Hubbard. Photo courtesy Shoreline Schools.

By Craig Degginger

Brownie Troop 41245 from Syre Elementary in Shoreline was recently honored as a group of "Earth Heroes at Schools" by King County Executive Dow Constantine.

"While these winners of the Earth Heroes at Schools award represent different segments of the school community, they all share a passion for the environment and for taking a hands-on approach to improving the world around us," Executive Dow Constantine said.

For their annual service project, this determined group of second- and third- grade scouts at Syre challenged themselves and their entire school by starting a lunchroom recycling program. They researched what materials could be collected for recycling, contacted their local recycling service for information, met with the school principal and custodian, and recruited parents and students to monitor the program and educate others on how to properly use it. Through a lunchtime presentation and a school newsletter article, the girls provided information about the program. As a result of the program, lunchtime waste was cut in half.

Executive Constantine presented certificates to the Syre troop in a ceremony at Maplewood Greens Golf Course in Renton.

This year the program recognized a record number of Earth Heroes countywide: Seven teachers, the Brownie troop, a student, three custodians, a parent and eight schools.

Many of the winners also participate in the King County Green Schools Program to take specific actions to conserve natural resources and reduce waste.

Community Transit approves service cuts

By Brian Doennebrink

Due to lower sales tax revenues brought on by the economic recession, the Community Transit Board of Directors recently approved service cuts which will take effect June 13, which includes suspension of all Community Transit service on Sundays and major holidays. Major holidays include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.

A less-publicized aspect of the service cutback is the scaling back of one-seat service to neighborhoods. Instead, many routes will be now start and end at transit centers, many of which are underutilized. In many cases, riders will still be able to take local routes to transit centers, where they can transfer to the commuter routes.

Shoreline riders will be mostly affected by the following changes:
  • the suspension of Sunday and holiday service;
  • the elimination of the UW-bound #870, which presently crosses North 205th with stops at the north edge of Aurora Village, at Meridian, and 6th Ave. NE; and
  • the reduction of the #101 buses that travel from Aurora Village along highway 99 to Airport Road and east to Mariner Park and Ride (128th) from every 15 minutes to every 20 minutes.

Shorewood on Newsweek list of 100 best high schools in USA - updated

Channel 4 news did a nice segment on Shorewood on the morning news, reporting that Newsweek had named the school to its list of 100 best high schools in America.

Channel 4 mentioned the boys' championship swim team, the boys' baseball team in the play-offs tonight at Safeco Field, and ended with a clip of the viral video from the video class.

-Editor

From Craig Degginger at Shoreline Schools:

KOMO had the number wrong this morning on that special weather forecast—Shorewood is ranked among “America’s Best High Schools”, by Newsweek, but not in the top 100.

From the Editor:
It was still a nice segment. I've been unsuccessful at finding it online. Sorry - you had to be there.

Embrace Shoreline Schools--Syre Elementary--Saturday, May 15

On Saturday, May 15, every school in the Shoreline School District had a gardening event to work on the school grounds.

18 yards bark mulch were laid and 3 yards of gravel shoveled.
24 bags of yard waste were composted.
And everyone seemed to be having a great time making their school grounds beautiful.

Native plant garden at Echo Lake Elementary

By Susie O'Donnell

Echo Lake Elementary School’s native plant garden is growing. Last spring, students, teachers, parents, and community volunteers began pulling away the thick ivy that blanketed the area, and the first installment of plants was planted by the 4th grade class.

This past winter, the School District graciously removed the remaining ivy when they replaced the School’s landscaping. By March, the 5th graders were able to replace the plants that had to be temporarily removed while the landscape work was being done.
With all the ivy removed, this year’s 4th grade had ample space to plant areas representing a variety of ecosystems found in Washington State, including conifer forest, wetland, alpine, rocky bluff, and prairie.

A trail system is still being constructed. After finishing the trails, we plan to label the plants and ecosystems represented.

Many hands went into creating this garden, from students to parents to members of the Echo Lake Community. Plants were donated by Washington Native Plant Stewards Donna Franklin and Richard Tinsley, harvested by Susie O’Donnell at King County Native Plant salvages, or bought with a grant from the Washington Native Plant Society and an Environmental Mini-Grant from the City of Shoreline.

Many of the wildflowers are already blooming. The community is invited to visit the garden, but please respect it by staying on the trails.

The garden is open to the public after school hours. Echo Lake Elementary is located at 19345 Wallingford Ave N, Shoreline 98133. The garden is between two wings of the school, on N 195th. See map.

Walmart launches Solar Schools Program at Einstein Middle School

By Craig Degginger, Shoreline Schools

Einstein Middle School in Shoreline is the first school in the Puget Sound region to be equipped with solar panels as part of a $1.2 million donation from Walmart to the National Energy Education Development Project (NEED).

The Solar Schools grant will provide each school with the renewable energy technology along with curriculum, teacher training and hands-on science kits. The installations will serve as living science experiments for the students. In addition to Seattle, schools in Chicago, Washington D.C., Minneapolis and Los Angeles will also participate in this program.

"Walmart is committed to providing support throughout our communities to improve education and promote renewable energy, such as solar panels" said Jennifer Spall, Walmart Senior Manager of Public Affairs and Government Relations. (Photo, left, by Steven H. Robinson.) "By partnering with local educational institutions, like the Shoreline School District and Shoreline Community College, as well as organizations like NEED, we believe the Solar Schools Program will have a lasting effect on the future of the Puget Sound region."

"The Shoreline School District is pleased to be partnering with Walmart, NEED, and Shoreline Community College as part of the Solar Schools Program. We are excited that our science students at Einstein Middle School will have the opportunity to utilize this renewable energy technology, and at the same time, our District will experience savings in energy costs," said Shoreline Schools Superintendent Sue Walker.

The four solar installations are expected to annually:
* generate approximately 28,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity,
* save the schools more than $3,000 in energy costs and
* prevent more than 20 tons of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.

The panels for the area schools will all be manufactured by Silicon Energy from Arlington, Wash. and installed by Galaxy Electric with the help of Shoreline Community College students involved in the photovoltaic program to provide students with hands-on solar design experience.

In addition to aligning with Walmart's renewable energy goal and commitment to education and teachers, this grant will help create and sustain green jobs. According to NEED, this program will help support green jobs, including engineering, design and installer technician jobs.

Planning for the Southeast Neighborhoods Subarea

UW Masters of Urban Design and Planning Class of 2011 works with Shoreline

By Derrick Hiebert-Flamm
Over the course of the past five months the University of Washington Masters of Urban Design and Planning (MUP) Class of 2011 has worked closely with community groups and the City of Shoreline to identify some of the strengths and opportunities of the Southeast Neighborhoods Subarea.

Since its annexation by the City of Shoreline several years ago, the parts of the Briarcrest and Ridgecrest Neighborhoods that make up the Subarea have been operating under a temporary comprehensive plan designation. The City convened the SE Neighborhoods Subarea Citizen’s Advisory Committee to create recommendations for the Subarea’s incorporation into the comprehensive plan. Our studio is working on the implementation of those recommendations. Our work groups focused on a variety of topics including land use, transportation, the environment, community participation and social capital, and housing. We explored in detail many of the goals and policies of the SE Neighborhoods Subarea Plan Report, and concentrated on creating plans for their implementation.

The MUP 1st year studio is a practical, experiential learning-based class for first-year masters students at the UW Department of Urban Design and Planning. We work closely with a client and a community on a variety of issues, creating plans or programs for the client’s use. Past plans created through our program include the City of Seattle’s Neighborhood Plan Update Process, for which those students won a major American Planning Association award. As the MUP is a professional degree program, we bring a variety of experiences in a number of fields, including urban design, geographic information systems, architecture, project management, and engineering.  We also bring additional people for use on projects the city may have lacked the staff to undertake.

We are pleased to be showing the final work products to the communities of Briarcrest and Ridgecrest and the City of Shoreline on Tuesday, June 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the First Christian Reformed Church Multipurpose Room, 14555 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

Proposal to ask voters to reprioritize property taxes to protect criminal justice falls one vote short

Legislation to allow voters to decide whether to fund criminal justice services by reprioritizing other property taxes did not garner the votes needed to be placed before the voters on the August ballot at today’s special meeting of the Metropolitan King County Council.

Today was the last day for the Council to take action to submit a proposal to the voters for the August primary ballot. A majority of the Council voted for the proposal, but it failed because a supermajority was required.
“Criminal justice is the County’s paramount duty,” said Council Chair Bob Ferguson. “We are all in this budget crisis together and it is disappointing that a minority of the Council frustrated the will of the majority to let the voters decide on funding criminal justice and public safety services.”
Councilmembers voting against giving voters the option to reprioritize property taxes were Kathy Lambert, Jane Hague, Pete von Reichbauer, and Reagan Dunn.

SCC Softball Drops Opening Game At NWAACC, Rain Eliminates Team

The SCC Lady Dolphin Softball Team dropped its opening game at the NWAACC Tournament, 6-1 to the Community College of Spokane on Sunday morning and then was eliminated by the rain, as the continued downpours shortened the tournament to a single elimination tournament to be completed on Monday, May 24.

The opening round was scheduled to be played on Friday, but was rained out. On Saturday, the CC of Spokane opened the first inning with a run but SCC rallied back to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. The game was then delayed another day because of rain. On the restart, Spokane came out smoking in the fourth inning, rallying for 5 runs behind the home run of Stephanie Chrystal to put SCC in a hole.

SCC had opportunities early in the game, having 2nd and 3rd with one out twice, but only managing to score one run in the first. SCC also rallied later in the game, having runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, but the rallied fizzled out.

SCC finished the season, 26-11 overall, 21-3 in the Northern Region.

Pinky's Passion For A Parkinson's Cure

By Diane Hettrick
Pat Erickson, also known as "Pinky" for her love of the color pink, was dancing the Funky Chicken with her son at the Meridian Park school dance in 2001. Being in the middle of school events was not unusual for Pat, a mother of three, an active PTA and school volunteer. What was unusual was that her arm was numb and the numbness didn't go away.

Many doctor visits and many tests later, she found out why. She had Parkinson's Disease, an incurable, progressive disease which wastes the nervous system so that the person gradually loses control over their movements. Symptoms include a combination of involuntary movements and muscle rigidity.

Pat, who had been deeply involved at Meridian Park Elementary, scaled back her volunteer work while she and her family learned how to live with this major change. For an entire year, Pat didn't tell anyone about her medical issues. Then her husband Steve said to her, "if any good is ever to come of this, you need to tell people." Her closest friend said she would help. Pat went public.

The response from friends, school and PTA volunteers, and kids, was positive and supportive. People said "How can we help?" Pat started thinking about what she could do that would make the most difference. The answer was clear: find a cure for Parkinson's by helping to fund the scientific research.

Pinky's Passion for a Parkinson's Cure was born. With the help of her good friend Marla Schriefer, the first event was held.

Pat, a slender, elegant woman, has a love for vintage clothing and had been collecting vintage outfits and accessories.

In April of 2007, Pat and Marla staged Pinky's Passion for Fashion, a vintage fashion show. The show raised $12,000 which Pat gave to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Michael J. Fox is the television and movie star (Back to the Future series) whose career was sidelined by Parkinson's. His foundation has funded almost $179 million in research and is ranked as one of the most fiscally responsible charities in the US.

Based on that donation, Pat and her husband Steve were invited to the Fox Foundation's Most Valuable People dinner in April 2008. Pat says, "It was there I met Michael J. Fox. He was everything you would hope he would be - warm, friendly and very funny."
