Purrfect Pals wants your vote to help animals

Purrfect Pals is a no-kill pet shelter and adoption center in Arlington at 230 McRae Road NE. They contract with pet stores and veterinary clinics all over Puget Sound to place animals for adoption in the stores and in mobile vans.

Photo: Bugsy is available for adoption at the Lynnwood PetCo.

They recently sponsored the Average Joe Pet Show in Shoreline (Ed: sorry - missed that story until it was too late).

Purrfect Pals is competing in the Pepsi Refresh Project and wants your votes.
Pepsi decided not to run an ad in the Super Bowl this year and instead put over a million dollars aside for non-profits. Now they need the votes to get the prize. Here's how to help them:

1. Go to the Pepsi Refresh website
2. Click on "Vote for this Idea"
3. Enter your email address and password you select
4. Click on "Vote for this Idea"
5. After vote is complete the response says "Good Job"
6. REMEMBER ONE VOTE PER DAY PER EMAIL for Purrfect Pals

They are currently #148 for the $25,000 idea and need to get to #1. Voting ends May 31.

Seattle Shores Chorus Celebrates 57 Years of Harmony

By Donna Heivilin

Seattle Shores Chorus of Sweet Adelines International recently celebrated their 57th year of making harmony.

The chorus is still going strong, and I’d like to take you on a little journey through the history of Seattle Shores as told by Opal Hicks.

Opal Hicks, a charter member with the chorus, can tell you all about her start in singing a cappella 4-part harmony in Seattle. In March of 1951 Opal and her husband attended a barbershop show put on by the Seattle Men’s Chapter of SPEBSQSA.

During intermission a woman by the name of Grace Doyle announced from the stage that a women’s singing group called Sweet Adelines was forming and all women were invited to attend. Opal’s husband told her to write down the phone number, which she did. She called the next Monday and found the women rehearsed on Tuesday. So Opal went Tuesday evening and found 6 to 8 women there. She decided to try the Baritone part and continues to sing it to this day.

In order for a chorus to charter with International, a group needed a Director and at least 12 active members. It took one and a half years to meet these requirements, but they actually chartered with 21 members. The charter was presented on May 4, 1953 by Dr. Sigmund Spaeth of New York City, noted musicologist and arranger of “Sweet Adeline” which was our official theme song for several years. At that time they officially became known as the Seattle Chapter of Sweet Adelines.

The chorus was busy with rehearsals, performances and competitions from 1953 to 1980. Soon after receiving their charter, Seattle Chapter was instrumental in assisting the formation of several other choruses throughout the area.

In 1980 it was decided that the Seattle Chorus and the Northshore Chorus would combine and become the Seattle Shores Chorus. At that time, International granted Seattle Shores Chorus the longevity of the Seattle Chorus. Still today we have members from both the original choruses singing with us.

In 1988 Seattle Shores went on to win the Regional competition which allowed them to go to Miami, Florida for the International competition. The chorus has continued to perform and bring their music to many great audiences. The most recent national event was in 2007 when we sang in Jamestown, Virginia for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.

Today, under the direction of Judy Cooper-MacLaren, Seattle Shores Chorus is still going strong singing 4-part barbershop harmony for groups of all sizes and in all types of venues, including birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas programs for companies or businesses. We currently have about 35 members and can provide a smaller group or a quartet if needed. We can provide entertainment for a 15 minute show or up to a 45 minute program including everything from patriotic music to show tunes, love songs to lullabies. For more information send us an email or call 206-363-8987.

If you’re a woman who likes to sing at church, in the shower, or in the car, we invite you to attend one of our rehearsals to see what fun we have every week. We meet every Tuesday evening from 6:30 pm -9:30 pm at the Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church, 14724-1st Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155. You may contact Seattle Shores Chorus by phone 206-363-8987, or by email. Check out our website, and while you’re there read our quarterly newsletters to see what we’re doing and learn a little more about us.

Sky Nursery Celebrates New Store Grand Opening

Friday, May 21, 2010

Sky Nursery is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of their new store and greenhouse.

The event will take place June 12, from 9 am to 6 pm.

Sky Nursery is a family owned and operated business. Founded in 1953, Sky has served generations of gardeners in the Shoreline and Seattle communities.

Today Sky Nursery is recognized as the "Gardener's Garden Store" throughout the region.

Long before the economic downturn, Sky Nursery was planning to change in a big way. The proposed widening of Aurora was going to take away critical storefront parking. Ownership took the opportunity to redesign the layout of the nursery.

The result is 52,000 square feet of new retail space, including a 35,000 square foot state-of-the-art greenhouse, and a new parking lot at the north end of the property.

Both the store and greenhouse offer added shopping convenience. “We have a lot more undercover shopping than before, wider aisles, double the parking space and new product lines,” said Mary Heide, Manager.

In conjunction with the Grand Opening from 9 am to 6 pm, Sky Nursery will celebrate their 10th Annual Customer Appreciation Day.

The Grand Opening/Customer Appreciation event will feature sales in every department, and vendors will be on hand to answer questions. Plants and garden products will be raffled off throughout the day and Sky's Junior Gardener’s Club will host events in the afternoon for kids, K-6th grade.

Three FM radio stations will be represented at the event, KJR, KCMS, and KMTT.  Refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

Sky Nursery is located at 18528 Aurora Ave N in Shoreline. For store hours and additional information call 206-546-4851 or visit the website

World Concern Bangkok Staff Safe Amidst Violence

World Concern is a ministry of CRISTA, located in Shoreline
From Derek T. Sciba

World Concern’s Asia office in Bangkok will remain closed for the rest of the week, barring an improvement in security within the city. Large political riots forced the office to close late last week, but World Concern’s staff in Thailand is safe. Key staff members are able to work from home. The Bangkok office is the base of operations in Asia, supporting World Concern’s work in seven countries.

The political unrest has caused us to delay a child trafficking prevention training seminar, but all other activities are continuing.

“World Concern’s work will go on regardless of how this plays out,” said Merry Fitzpatrick, senior director of technical support. “Our staff are trained to handle this kind of situation. We’re focused on serving the poor throughout Asia.”

If the violence in Bangkok continues, it is possible to temporarily shift some essential functions to another country in which World Concern works. Staff members both in the Bangkok office and at the Seattle headquarters are watching how the situation develops and are adjusting plans accordingly.

Every year, World Concern helps lift people out of poverty through activities including microfinance, agriculture, disaster response and small business development. World Concern works with the poor in 24 countries, with the goal of transforming the lives of those we touch, leading them on a path to self-sustainability.
Across the globe, World Concern offers life, opportunity and hope to more than six million people.

Shoreline Remodeler builds a wheel chair ramp for a neighbor

By Melissa Irons

This past Saturday, May 15, 2010 marked the 17th anniversary of the Master Builders Care Foundation’s (MBCF) annual Rampathon event. MBCF is the philanthropic arm of the Master Builders Association (MBA) of King and Snohomish Counties and coordinates several community events throughout the year.

Since 1993, more than 300 ramps have been built by MBA builder captain members for neighbors in need and this year is no exception. Despite the economic situation, Irons Brothers Construction and several other builders and remodelers have joined efforts to continue to make this event possible.

Joseph Irons, the 2009 MBA Remodeler of the Year, and President of Irons Brothers Construction, based in Shoreline, WA built a wheelchair ramp for a fellow Shoreline resident.

Joseph and his wife Melissa (pictured left, photo by DKH)  live in the Parkwood neighborhood and work in the North City neighborhood of Shoreline. Joseph and his team of volunteers have participated in Rampathon for the past 5 years.

This year’s recipient, Ms. Bogen lives on 148th and Densmore Ave N which is within walking distance of the Irons home. This made the event even more special this year for his company and their family. Ms. Bogen is disabled and unable to the afford ramp construction. Her two sons care for her and assist with her activities of daily living as she battles hearing impairment and progressive illness confining her to a wheelchair.

Irons Brothers Construction Volunteers and staff pictured include: Joseph Irons, Melissa Irons, Scarlet Haney, Bruce Irons, Krystal Irons, Rhett Irons, Mark Stoddard, Ray Underwood, Lillard Beckwith, Chris Hensley, Delynda Leptich, Herco Ordana, Tony Puloka, Jose Arriaga, Valter Alfaro, and Ramon Mendoza.

On Saturday, Joseph and his team started their one day Rampathon construction project at 7:30 am and completed their ramp, including staining the wood after dusk at 9:00 pm. To coordinate and achieve the goal of one day construction, months of planning is required of the builder captain. This year 16 volunteers came together to help this family enjoy more freedom and accessibility.

Joseph takes this philanthropic project very seriously and says, “Our ramps are built to last, usually outliving the home. We also want their ramp to blend in with the style of their home and the neighborhood. This is incorporated into our design plan.”

This year Rampathon builders constructed 18 wheelchair access ramps for disabled homeowners across King and Snohomish counties. This is all done at no cost to the recipients thanks to the generous volunteers and material suppliers who contribute countless hours and dollars to this great cause.

Irons Brothers Construction would like to specifically thank the donors who made this year’s ramp construction possible: Home Depot, Dunn Lumber, Aurora Rents, Plywood Supply, and Three Guys Concrete.
