CORRECTIONS- 32nd District Democrats unanimous in support of both Chase and Ryu; McConnell wasn't at meeting

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

I said in an earlier post that when the 32nd District Democrats had announced that they had voted unanimously to support State Rep, Maralyn Chase for State senator, they said nothing about the vote to nominate former Shoreline Councilwoman Cindy Ryu for State representative.

District Democratic Chairwoman Carin Chase now tells me that both Rep. Chase and Ryu won unanimous votes of the District Precinct Committee Officers (PCOs) who assembled Wednesday.

In addition, a reader points out that Doris McConnell's statement of possible candidacy was read at the meeting. McConnell wasn't present,  She told me that she was unable to attend because as chair of the Domestic Violence Initiative Committee, she was required to make a presentation at a meeting at the same time as the Democrats' nominating meeting.

County council proposes sales tax hike to fund public safety

The Metropolitan King County Council will take public testimony on proposed legislation to send to voters a two-tenths of one percent sales tax increase to keep current levels of public safety, criminal justice and related services on Monday, May 17 at 1:30 pm in the Council Chambers on the 10th floor, of the King County Courthouse at 516 Third Avenue, Seattle, WA.

The meeting will also be carried LIVE on King County TV, Comcast and Broadstripe Cable channel 22, and streaming online.

This will be the third public hearing on the County Executive’s proposal to place a local option sales tax increase for criminal justice and related services on the August ballot. If adopted by the voters, the increase would generate approximately $47 million in revenue for King County in 2011, allowing the County to maintain current service levels of programs for the Sheriff’s Office, the King County Prosecutor, and the Superior and District Courts. Under state law, an additional $30 million in revenue from the levy would also be allocated to the 39 cities within King County based on their population.

Evan Smith: 32nd District Democrats vote to support Chase, Ryu and Kagi

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

The 32nd Legislative District Democratic Committee voted Wednesday to support State Rep. Maralyn Chase for the State Senate seat that Darlene Fairley is vacating and to back former Shoreline Councilwoman Cindy Ryu for Chase’s seat.

The District Democrats had previously nominated Rep. Ruth Kagi for re-election.

A news release from the District Democratic organization said that Chase was unopposed. It said nothing about opposition to Ryu, but it said that Shoreline Councilwoman Doris McConnell had told the group that she is weighing options about running for State representative.

“As of right now, I have not made a final decision,” McConnell told the group. “I look forward to coming before your body for an endorsement, if I choose to run, at some future date.”

Chase, Kagi, Ryu 32nd District Democratic Nominees

From Carin Chase, 32nd Democrats Chair

In a large gathering of Democrats at the Shoreline American Legion Hall, the 32nd District Democrats nominated State Representative Maralyn Chase for State Senator and former Shoreline Mayor Cindy Ryu for State Representative, Position 1.

After receiving the nomination, Representative Chase stated, “I am honored and thrilled to have received the nomination of the 32nd District Democrats for the Senate.” Chase, nominated by former Senator Donn Charnley, was unopposed for the Senate nomination.

Former Shoreline Mayor Cindy Ryu touted her experiences on the Shoreline City Council, stating how she fought to make Aurora Avenue project business- and environmentally- friendly. She explained, she is “excited, thankful and proud to be a Democrat.”

“I am proud of our Democratic nominees,” said Maryn Wynne. “I know they will represent the district well in Olympia.”

Following the nominations of Chase and Ryu, the Democrats passed a resolution opposing the recent Arizona law granting the police broad powers to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally. The resolution urges the cities of Edmonds, Kenmore, Kirkland, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline to refrain from conducting official city business with the State of Arizona until the law is repealed. “We do not want to send city employees to an environment where they could be detained,” argued Shoreline resident Jean-Paul Willyack.

In a statement read to the 32nd District Democrats, Shoreline Councilmember Doris McConnell declared, “I am still weighing my options regarding running for 32nd District State Representative but as of right now, I have not made a final decision. I look forward to coming before your body for an endorsement, if I choose to run, at some future date.”

Nearly 60 Democrats attended the nominating convention, held after Senator Darlene Fairley announced her retirement last month.

Representative Ruth Kagi received the Democrats’ nomination in April for State Representative, Position 2.

Embrace Shoreline Schools on Saturday, May 15

The 3rd annual Embrace Shoreline Schools Day will be held on Saturday, May 15 from 9 am to noon at schools throughout the Shoreline School District.

The event is a joint effort between the school district, neighborhood associations, area churches, community members and the PTA to beautify our school grounds. All community members are invited to join in. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and hand tools.

In 2008, a group of faith-based organizations in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, led by Pastor Steve Ulmer of New Hope-Seattle, wanted to find a way to serve the community.

With the Shoreline School District having a tight budget, many of the school grounds were in need of some cleanup and landscaping. The first Embrace Shoreline Schools (ESS) event was held in May of 2008. Spearheaded by Pastor Ulmer’s efforts, each Shoreline/Lake Forest Park school was paired with a local church. Area neighborhood associations, service club members, and PTSA members joined them cleaning up and weeding the school grounds.

The end result was 10 truckloads of weeds and litter being removed from school grounds. Bark and wood chips were spread at several locations. In some places new vegetation was planted. Most importantly, the community working together built some new relationships with each other and the schools. The second annual event was equally successful in 2009.

On May 15, each of Shoreline’s schools and PTAs are again paired with at least one church or neighborhood association. For a complete list of contacts, visit Embrace Shoreline Schools on the web.

Projects may include such tasks as gardening and maintenance, pruning, weeding, and other needs identified by the schools themselves.

The goal of Embrace Shoreline Schools is to see every church, PTSA and neighborhood association in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park involved in working on the school grounds. Many of the schools’ community partners have held work parties in the months between the Embrace Shoreline Schools events.

Evan Smith: A mysterious telephone survey

Commentary / Evan Smith

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

The recorded survey Tuesday asked for my opinions of candidates and potential candidates for the State Senate from the 32nd Legislative District and asked how I would vote between possible opponents.

It’s the kind of survey I might expect for an upcoming statewide campaign, not for a campaign for an election for the State Legislature nearly six months away.

Who could be paying for it? None of the candidates has raised enough money to pay for something like this.

I have learned that it came from the State Senate Democratic Campaign Committee, which long supported retiring Sen. Darlene Fairley, a power within the Senate Democratic caucus but someone who was unpopular with the 32nd District Democratic Committee.

The Senate Democratic group has paid for surveys in the past.

State Rep. Maralyn Chase, who has announced her candidacy for Fairley’s position, is a popular part of the 32nd District Democratic organization but is someone who State Senate Democrats don't want.

Democrats in the Legislature want Rep, Ruth Kagi to replace Fairley. She has been an influential legislator, but, unlike Fairley, she has kept a friendly relationship with the 32nd District Democratic Committee.

The State Democrats will use the survey to show that, while both Chase and Kagi have a lot of local support, Chase has a significant number of people who hold negative views of her, something that the right opponent could exploit.

The survey asked about Chase, a declared candidate; Kagi, who says that she is reconsidering her earlier decision not to run; Kenmore City Councilman David Baker, who has filed with the State public disclosure commission as a Senate candidate; and Shoreline Councilman Keith McGlashan, who is keeping his intentions to himself.

Plans for Richmond Beach Saltwater Bridge

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Richmond Beach Saltwater Park Bridge.  Detail of photo by Keith Miles.

The Shoreline Parks department shares the plans for the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park Bridge:

Bridge Repair:
The bridge was analyzed when we were preparing the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park Master Plan. Major repairs were identified. Planning is planned to begin in late 2010 to repair the bridge fence cage, bull rail and asphalt surfacing. BNSF (Burlington Northern / Santa Fe railroad) review is required and permits will be necessary because the bridge crosses their railroad property. Construction is expected to begin in late 2011.

Bridge Replacement:
The Saltwater Park Master Plan does identify the bridge to be replaced and possibly moved in the future. After the major repairs are completed in the next few years we will be able to identify when a replacement would need to occur in the future. There is currently no funding in the Capital Improvement Plan to replace the bridge.

Seattle HazMat Team Assists Shoreline Fire in Identifying Hazardous Chemical

By Melanie Granfors, Shoreline Fire
Shoreline Firefighters were called to an unoccupied residence near 170th Place and Dayton Avenue North at about 12:30 today after a man reported that he left a hazardous material in the garage of the home.

When fire crews arrived, four workers repairing the home were in the area – as was the unidentified male who originally called 9-1-1. The five men were isolated as a precaution, and evaluated for any possible symptoms of exposure.

Because the man was vague about what substance he left in the garage, or when and why he did it, Shoreline Fire requested the assistance of the Seattle Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team.

Police closed off access to the area for about two hours while the incident was ongoing.

Seattle Fire quickly determined the material to be a potentially hazardous chemical. However, no one suffered any symptoms of exposure. HazMat experts advised the property owner to hire a professional cleanup firm to handle the removal of the substance.

Police are investigating the incident, and looking into the motives of the man who reported the incident.

[Editor's note:  I was southbound on I-5 mid-day and passed at least eight Seattle Fire Department vehicles - medic units, fire engines, and others, all headed north on I-5 with lights flashing.  No sirens, and they were going freeway speed, but it was quite a procession.]

Book Review by Aarene Storms

Wonderland by Tommy Kovac, illustrated by Sonny Liew

Wonderland has never recovered from Alice's visit and the housemaid Mary Ann is still being mistaken for "the Monster Alice." In this splendid graphic novel, Mary Ann falls down a Treacle Well, encounters the Queen of Spades, is nearly beheaded by the Queen of Hearts, has tea with the March Hare and the Mad Hatter, and chats with the Cheshire Cat--and still finds the time to fret about jam stains on her apron.

The author and illustrator are completely comfortable in Wonderland, and do not spend any time explaining the original backstory. Readers who have only seen the old animated Disney movie will be as fuddled as Alice herself, but those familiar with Lewis Carroll's stories will chortle for joy at this unique treatment of the tale and characters. Calloo! Callay!

No cussing, no kissing and no futterwacking - but tons of fun.

Recommended for readers ages 10 to adult.

Shoreline site no longer studied for a regional municipal jail

By Susan Will, Shoreline Communications Specialist
 Photos courtesy Friends of Aldercrest

Shoreline’s Ballinger neighborhood – as well as the rest of the City – can let out a sigh of relief as the NEC jail siting process comes to an end. Today King County Executive Dow Constantine announced that King County is offering jail beds to cities through 2020 and plans to form a regional jail planning group. Due to the county’s proposal in concert with new options for contracting jail beds regionally, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn has recommended ending the process of siting a new regional municipal jail.

“King County’s offer for a regional solution and additional beds through 2020 provides our City the confidence to sunset the environmental impact review process,” said Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan. “That is truly good news for our community, particularly for our residents in the Ballinger neighborhood now that Shoreline no longer has a site under consideration for a jail.”

Cities in King County originally formed regional groups to address the projected loss of jail bed space after King County’s bed space projections determined there would not be available jail beds for cities after 2012. The north and east cities including Shoreline and Seattle formed the NEC and the southern County cities formed the South Correctional Entity (SCORE). SCORE is building a jail, now under construction in Des Moines and expected to open in 2011, which will have jail beds available for rent to King County cities through 2020.

With the available beds from King County and SCORE, and with the other municipal jail beds available in the region, the NEC believes there will be enough capacity to cover all of its misdemeanant jail bed needs through 2020 without having to build additional capacity.

As a result of these projections, Seattle has recommended and Shoreline and the rest of the NEC cities concur, stopping the current environmental impact review process being conducted on the six potential sites for a regional municipal jail for north and east cities. Stopping the process will remove the Shoreline site, along with the other sites, from further consideration as a possible location for the construction of a regional municipal jail.

The Donor Closet - medical equipment for those in need

By Patty Price
for the ShorelineAreaNews

Today I was given an “eye opener”….

Thanks to Bob, the director at the Shoreline Senior Center, who was trying to clear out a messy back room, I wound up with my van full of “medical aids” which I had volunteered to take to a place I had heard of in Edmonds, which recycled such things as crutches, wheel chairs, bed pans, and walkers … but I had no idea of what I was to find.

Here in a basement under the Pancake House in Edmonds, are neatly arranged, useful and needed equipment for those who are handicapped, on low income or who have been denied these items by Medicare.

The story has to be told about “Bill” who started this “donor closet,” and the 30 volunteers who work there, repair items, and do all that needs to be done to get equipment to those who need it desperately.

They even have a free monthly drawing for a recycled scooter or power chair for anyone with MS who lives in the Washington area.

The best information is to be found on their web site: MSHelpingHands, which says they want "to assist those who have fallen through the cracks of the Social Services System."

Read it and remember them the next time you see a slightly dented, broken or dinged piece of medical equipment. Call them at 425-712-1807 – they will pick up or welcome you to see this place yourself.

Bob welcomes volunteers who can help with the equipment repair. Let's get the word out so this will no longer be, as their brochure says: “ One of the Best Kept Secrets in Edmonds.”

The Donor Closet is at 409 Howell Way in Edmonds 98020. It is open 10 am to 3 pm, Monday through Saturday. 425-712-1807. Administrative contact 425-712-1804, or email.

Students learn the consequences of drinking and driving

Inglemoor students and staff watch as emergency workers demonstrate the effects of a DUI crash

By Terri Jones, Northshore Fire

KENMORE - On Friday, May 7 at 9:45 am, the Northshore Fire Department and Inglemoor High School teamed up to prepare students to make better choices about driving or riding with someone under the influence of alcohol, the consequences of which can drastically change the life of a teenager forever.

Northshore Fire Department, Airlift NW, Kenmore Police, King County Sheriffs, Shoreline Medic One, Rural Metro and AMR Ambulance Services, and Jim’s Northgate Towing provided the senior class of Inglemoor High School, on the weekend before their senior prom, with a powerful and convincing presentation intended to make the students stop and think about their future and the choices they will have to make.

Through a highly visual and realistic demonstration, students witnessed a staged vehicle crash involving two vehicles filled with several high school classmates and the subsequent rescue efforts by emergency response personnel. Following the dramatization, a speaker addressed the senior class about a personal choice that led to lifelong emotional, physical, and financial consequences.

This is the thirteenth year that the Northshore Fire Department has organized the drill for Inglemoor High School seniors.
