Evan Smith: Kagi taking ‘second look’ at a run for State senate

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

Democratic State Rep. Ruth Kagi (pictured, right) now says that she is taking a “second look” at a run for the 32nd District State senate seat that fellow Democrat Darlene Fairley is vacating.

After Fairley announced her retirement, Democratic leaders in Olympia put pressure on Kagi to run for the seat.

Kagi rejected the overtures because she has a leadership position as chairwoman of the House committee on early learning and children’s services, a position that has led to national leadership on the subject.

Now, however, she says, "Having many constituents -- and many senators -- ask me to run is making me take a second look."

The District's other representative, Democrat Maralyn Chase has already announced her candidacy for the State senate.

Kenmore Mayor David Baker has said that he would run for the Senate seat as a Republican.
Former Shoreline Mayor Cindy Ryu is running as a Democrat for Chase's seat.

King Council encourages development of Community Gardens on County-owned land

Monday, May 10, 2010

From King County Council staff

The Metropolitan King County Council today took a step toward establishing “neighborhood farms” with its unanimous adoption of legislation calling for the creation and management of community gardens on county-owned land throughout King County. The legislation is part of a broader Council goal to create “Safe, Healthy, and Vibrant Communities.”

Community gardens are a way for people who don’t own land, including apartment-dwellers, to produce fresh, local, organic produce at a very low cost. Community gardens are also a source of local produce for the wider community—in 2009 the Interbay P-Patch donated over 5000 pounds of produce to the local food bank. In the city of Seattle, over 2,000 people are on a waiting list for P-Patches.

A 2008 study found that the County owns more than 2,000 parcels of land in urban areas. Of these unused parcels as many as 84 may be fit for siting community gardens. The adopted legislation calls for the development of a plan to create and manage the gardens. The plan would be developed in conjunction with an advisory council made up of representatives from Public Health-Seattle and King County, Washington State University, King County Agricultural Commission, food banks, gardening organizations, schools, and homeless shelters.

The legislation mandates the County Executive present a garden implementation plan to the Council by November of this year.

Clarification: School programs at Aldercrest

We had previously reported, in the jail story, that the old gym at the Aldercrest Annex was used for school programs. This was incorrect. There are two Aldercrest sites. The Aldercrest Annex, with the fields and gym, was the proposed jail site. The gym building is vacant.

Across the street, the old Aldercrest Elementary school, now called the Aldercrest Learning Center, is leased to tenants, including the Discovery School and Living Wisdom School.

German students to spend a week at Shorecrest

By Craig Degginger, Shoreline Schools

Shorecrest High School will host 39 students and four faculty from Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium (THG), located in Muehlacker, near Stuttgart in southwestern Germany, from May 8 to 16.

This group is the school choir and will perform while at Shorecrest, but the primary reason for their visit is to experience American culture. There will be a public performance on May 12, at 7 pm, in the Third Place Commons at Lake Forest Park Towne Center.

"The German students visiting us are interested in learning about American culture, especially collaborating and sharing a passion for music and exchanging and discussing ideas in science," said Shorecrest science teacher Vince Santo Pietro, who is coordinating the group's visit. He first became acquainted with the school when a group of Shorecrest students visited Germany in 2004.

"Most have never been in our country before. What better way to experience the culture than staying in the homes of our teens and visiting our school. Likewise, our students will learn a lot about European culture."

Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium is a public school with an emphasis on the arts. The school is located in the town of Muehlacker, about the size of Shoreline, located in the southern German state of Baden-Wuerttemburg.

The Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium students will attend classes with their Shorecrest host students Monday through Thursday, and will have the opportunity for sightseeing in the Seattle area before leaving on May 16.

Summers overcomes injuries and academics to become SCC ace pitcher

When Brady Summers graduated from Shorewood High School in the spring of 2006, he was a third baseman for the Thunderbird’s baseball team. It never occurred to him that in the spring of 2010, he would be the ace of the Shoreline Community College pitching staff. The journey to this point in his life was long and filled with up and downs, but he has arrived here with determination and the desire to do what is best for the team.

Over the past four years, Brady has battled both academics issues and injuries, both of which have changed the direction of his baseball career and his life. As a freshman at Shoreline CC, Brady ended up playing some as a part-time catcher before an injury that year ended his first college season. He had no way of knowing, that three years would past before he would return to the field and he would be standing 60 feet, 6 inches away from his old position at SCC and looking off the mound instead of up to it.

Summers battled the next two years with academic problems, as his priorities at that point in his life were not where they should be. He also battled some other injuries that kept his motivation down as well. But over time, his priorities changed and as his academics improved, he also gained responsibilities in the SCC Athletic Department as he became the main game management student employee for volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and basketball games. As his academics and responsibilities grew at the college, so did his baseball fortunes, as he was moved to pitcher by SCC baseball coach, Steve Seki and his success on the field began to turn as well.

In the fall of 2009, Brady for the first time made the Academic Athletic Honor Roll at the college as a member of the Green Club (student-athletes with a 3.00 GPA or better).

In the spring of 2010, Brady has a 5-1 record with a 1.94 ERA and has begun to gain interest from four year college baseball programs. Brady has allowed only 15 walks in 45 innings of work with 43 strikeouts. Brady has received interest from colleges across the country to include Morningside College in Iowa, Shawnee State in Ohio and New Mexico Highlands.

Summers has been one of the bright spots this season for Shoreline CC, whose team record is 13-15 after a fast start of 9-1. But in the tough NWAACC Northern Region, the team has faltered to a 4-12 record in the division, but Brady again has proven his worth a 2-1 record in the region with 2 no decisions.

He hopes to continue his career at a four year college next season, but regardless, his desire and determination has won him a lot of friends at the college:

Athletic Director Doug Palmer said: “A lot of student-athletes in Brady’s shoes would have quit after the first or second year. We see student-athletes after an injury or academic trouble leave the college and never come back after a year or two at most, but Brady has showed a true desire to better himself in the classroom and on the field and this is very rare for someone. We have come to count on Brady as a student worker at SCC, he has been the most dependable game worker for us in the time I have been at the college and that speaks a lot about his character. I have been so please to see Brady's development on the field and classroom as well, as he has worked very hard to get to this point in his life and career”.

Shoreline Police Blotter 4-24 to 5-3-2010

A week in the life of the Shoreline Police department
As told to Diane Hettrick (categories and comments all mine)

Good Citizenship Awards

4-25…..N 175 / Meridian. Found cell phone. (And obviously turned it in. Good job!)

4-29…..BE 146th / 17th NE. Dark roadway, suspicious person looking into car. (Our police want you to call in this kind of thing. Our chief’s favorite line: “If you don’t tell us, we don’t know.”)

Bad Citizenship Awards

5-1……108 NE 161st, Ridgecrest Park. Spray paint and markers used on handball courts, portable toilet, bleachers, garbage cans. (And it takes our money to pay staff to clean this stuff up. 17 kids and a couple of adults identified and charged and there are still idiots out there trashing the place. Turn them in! Call 1-800-222-TIPS)

Serious need for crisis relationship counseling

4-27…..Shoreline Community College. Female student reported harassment by male student. (No jokes about this. There have been too many bad outcomes.)

4-27…..305 NW RB Rd, Highland Square Apts. Ex-husband enters apartment without permission. (Bet he went back to get his stuff when she wasn’t home.)

4-28…..161xx Midvale. Husband assaults wife.

4-29…..12x N 178th, Newcastle Apts. Guy argues with girlfriend, somebody calls police. Guy arrested for an outstanding warrant for a hit and run. (No, he didn’t hit her and run. He was in his car. No, he didn’t hit her in the car or with the car. He hit somebody else .. no, with the car – oh nevermind!)

4-29…..14x NW RB Rd, Meadowbrook Apt. Entered apt and stole wedding ring. (common thief or disgruntled ex-husband? “I paid for the blankity-blank thing!”)

Druggies

4-27…..18325 Aurora, Fred Meyer. Forged prescription.

5-1……15332 Aurora, Safeway parking lot. Guy passed out in vehicle. Glass pipe with residue, electronic scale and syringe in plain view. Probably black tar heroin and crack.

Mental

5-2……175xx Stone. Woman is off her meds and acting out of control, kicking and damaging doors at father’s house. Taken to hospital for mental evaluation. (or she’s a teenager)

5-2……160xx Aurora, bus shelter. Subject transported to hospital for suicidal statements and alcoholism.

It’s a wonder that boys live to grow up

4-28…..155xx 11th NE. Bunch of guys in a Jetta drive up and throw a soda bottle bomb on the road in front of the residence, then speed off.

Picking on old ladies

4-30…..1201 N 175th, Top Foods. Thief stole purse from elderly woman’s shopping cart. They have him on video surveillance. (Ok, Mr. Policeman, grey hair doesn’t make you elderly. Note to women: thieves are grabbing purses out of shopping carts in all the stores with carts, whether you are “elderly” or not. And OMG – video surveillance in Top? I thought I was alone in that aisle. I’d better not show up on America’s funniest home videos.)

Crimes of opportunity?

4-28…..19290 Aurora, YMCA. Items stolen from woman’s locker.

4-30…..19290 Aurora, YMCA. Items stolen from woman’s locker.

5-1……15332 Aurora, Safeway. Shoplifted sandwich. (And we’ve got you on video, buster)

The boys in blue haven’t been on the road much this week...

4-29…..179xx Linden. Driving With License Suspended.

4-29…..166xx Stone. Driver stopped for speeding and arrested for Driving With License Revoked and drug charges. Booked King County jail.

5-1……N 160 / Aurora. Driver stopped. Has two outstanding warrants. Booked King County Jail.

...they were too busy processing cars

4-30…..176xx 6th NW. Abandoned vehicle. Notified by Shoreline Customer Response Team.
4-30…..N 195th / Linden. Abandoned vehicle. Notified by Shoreline Customer Response Team.
4-30…..174xx 12th. Abandoned vehicle. Notified by Shoreline Customer Response Team.
4-30…..12x NE 168th. Abandoned vehicle. Notified by Shoreline Customer Response Team.
4-30…..157xx Midvale. Abandoned vehicle. Notified by Shoreline Customer Response Team.

Locked or unlocked?

5-1……412 NE 165th, Ridgecrest Apts. Broke car window, rummaged through glove box.

5-3……177xx 10th NW. Car unlocked. GPS stolen.

Pallet thefts

4-30…..Anheuser-Busch pallets stolen from various Shoreline businesses since the beginning of 2010. (Starting their own brewing business?)

Huh?

4-30…..South Woods, 25th NE. Boy attempting to report violation of order against his ex-girlfriend. Problem is he followed her into the woods. She saw him and left with friends. (So he’s stalking her? Or she’s hanging out with the wrong people and he’s trying to protect her?)

Now here’s an idea

5-1……8xx N 161st Pl. Received award letter with bad check. (What an enchanting idea! Every time we get one of those bogus checks in the mail, we turn them in for fraud. I like it. But don’t call the police. Maybe the attorney general’s office or Get Jesse. Rob McKenna or Jesse – which one would be the scariest?)

Evan Smith: Kenmore mayor to run for State senate

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer
