General Manager
Ronald Wastewater District

Ronald Wastewater is in the process of replacing the sanitary sewer mainlines at the locations listed below. If the home owners whose private sewers connect to the mainline wish it, Ronald will replace their private side sewers at no additional cost to them. The home owner will need only to sign a Right-of-Entry document allowing Ronald to do the work.

The utility is planning to complete all these project this year. The contracts for the 2008 and 2009 work has gone to Landis and Landis Construction (2008 contract cost $457,719.98; 2009 contract cost $509,200.00). The 2008 project is almost complete; the 2009 project will be starting in a week or two. The 2010 projects are still in the drawing/design phase and hopefully will start construction this summer. The plan is to undertake at least two of these type projects each year for the next 10 or so years. If any one would like more information about the projects they may contact me at 206-546-2494

Evan Smith: Shoreline School M&O levy passes 70% approval

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

The Shoreline School maintenance-and-operations levy was passing Thursday afternoon by a margin that passed 70 percent.

Shoreline School District Prop. 1., which would extend the levy last passed four years ago for another four years, had a "yes" vote of 70.09 percent compared to 69.06 percent Wednesday and 68.09 Tuesday.

The levy pays for more than 20 percent of the District's operating budget.

Passing the levy is easier than it was in 2006 because a 2007 amendment to the State constitution eliminated requirements of a 60 percent "yes" vote and a 40 percent voter turnout.

As of the 4:30 p.m. Thursday release of returns by the King County elections department, the total vote was 11,898 "yes" and 5,078 "no."

The voter turnout as of Thursday was 40.29 percent, far above the expected 35 percent countywide turnout.

Ballots included in the Thursday count were generally those received by Wednesday, meaning that they had to be mailed or dropped off by Tuesday.

The next vote count is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday. The elections department will continue to count votes until final certification, Wednesday, February 24.

Votes still to be counted are either from overseas voters or from voters whose ballots were returned because of missing or invalid signatures.

Evan Smith: Shoreline School bond issue margin continues to increase

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

The Shoreline School construction bond measure was passing Thursday afternoon with an increasingly larger margin than it had Wednesday.

Shoreline School District Prop. 2., which would pay for rebuilding both Shorecrest and Shorewood high schools, had a 359-vote margin over the 60 percent approval rate needed for passing, compared to 203 votes Wednesday.

The measure had a 62.21 percent approval rate, compared to a 61.50 percent approval rate Wednesday and a 60.83 percent approval rate Tuesday night.

A bond election is valid only with a turnout equal to at least 40 percent of the number of district voters who voted in the last statewide election.

In the Shoreline District, that means the measure needed 9,516 voters or 5,710 "yes" votes for the election to be valid.

As of the 4:30 p.m. Thursday release of returns by the King County elections department, the total vote was 16,261, with 10,116 "yes" votes. That means that the election is valid.

The Thursday vote count was based on a turnout higher than the expected countywide turnout.

Ballots included in the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday counts were generally those received by Wednesday meaning that they had to be mailed or dropped off by Tuesday.

The next vote count is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday. The elections department will continue to count votes until final certification, Wednesday, Feb. 24.

Elections officials expected most ballots to be returned by Thursday. Votes still to come in are from voters sending their votes from overseas and from voters whose ballots were returned for missing or invalid signatures.

Rob Petschl hired as Shorewood football coach

By Don Dalziel
Director of Athletics
Shoreline School District

Shorewood High School and the Shoreline School District are pleased to announce Rob Petschl as their new varsity football coach. Petschl replaces Andrew Hershey who resigned in November after three years as the T-Birds Head Coach.

This will be Petschl’s first head football assignment. However, he is no stranger to the WESCO Conference or area football. Most recently Petschl served as the Defensive Coordinator and top assistant at Bishop Blanchet High School for five years. Prior to that he had stops at Mountlake Terrace and Shorecrest high school and totals 17 years of football coaching in the area.

We are excited to have someone with Rob’s credentials and coaching experience. He came into the interview process with a plan and an excitement to be the leader of the Shorewood Football Program. In addition, Rob is well connected with the area football community and we feel this will be an asset as he builds this program. He has been successful as an assistant coach and is ready for his chance to be the head guy. We are looking forward to watching Rob build the program and look forward to a long run with Rob as our Head Coach at Shorewood.

All three school measures increase margins

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

All three Shoreline School District ballot measures showed increased support in the Wednesday vote count.

The maintenance-and-operations levy and the technology levy both increased their overwhelming passing margins, and the construction bond measure widened what had been a narrow margin.

The vote for the measure to approve construction bonds to rebuild the District’s two high schools increased from 60.83 Tuesday night to 61.50 percent Wednesday afternoon. The bond measure needs a 60 percent approval rate to pass. The measure has already exceeded the number of votes needed to validate the election.

The District’s maintenance-and-operations levy, which can pass with a simple majority, increased its “yes“ vote from 68.09 Tuesday to 69.06 percent Wednesday.

The technology levy, which also can pass with a simple majority, increased its portion of “yes“ votes from 64.37 percent to 65.08 percent.

Voter turnout through Wednesday afternoon had already matched the expected countywide turnout.

Ballots included in the Wednesday count were generally those received by Tuesday, meaning that they had to be mailed by Monday or dropped off by Tuesday.

The next vote count is scheduled for 4:30 pm Thursday. The elections department will continue to count votes until final certification, Wednesday, February 24.

SL Parks Bond improvements at Richmond Highlands park

by Brett Abernethy
Shoreline Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services

Funded by the 2006 Shoreline voter approved Bond Issue, construction of a new outdoor restroom building is underway. The current restroom has been demolished in preparation for the construction of the new restroom. The City is seeking a Variance to the 20’ building setback for the new structure so that it is located closest to the spectator seating and parking adjacent to the street. The City is also in the process of receiving the site development and building permits in the month of January.
A public meeting to notify the neighborhood of the variance is scheduled from 7 - 8 pm on January 19 at the Richmond Highlands Recreation Center. Site work is anticipated to begin construction in late January. Upon completion of the variance and permitting process, the restroom building is anticipated to begin construction in late February and completed sometime in April. A portable restroom will be provided during the upcoming baseball season since the current structure was demolished.

During that time, the restrooms at the Recreation Center will not be available for use during games. Construction will continue through the early part of the baseball season; however, the construction site should not impact the spectator seating and the majority of parking.

Please contact Ross Heller at (206) 801-2472 if you have any additional questions.

In addition, Park Maintenance staff is in the process of installing dugout shelter roofs. The new covers will be 8’ wide and 20’ in length. They will be made of wood for the support structure and the roofs will be metal. The shelters will provide protection for players from sun and rain. Staff will be constructing dugout covers at Richmond Highlands field #1, Paramount School Park fields #1 and #2, Hillwood Park and at the upper fields at Hamlin Park #5 and #6.
