Red Sky Gallery announces special October 10th welcome to VSP Jewelry artist, YeeMan Lee

Wednesday, October 7, 2020

YeeMan Lee of VSP Jewelry has found a home at the Red Sky Gallery
She briefly removed her mask for the photo by Donna Hawkey

By Donna Hawkey

Join Red Sky Gallery owner Laura Michaelson as she welcomes YeeMan Lee back to the Lake Forest Park Town Center on Saturday, October 10, 2020, from noon to 4:00pm.

YeeMan is an established jewelry artist with over thirty years of experience. Laura explains the relationship as one inspired by “out of the box thinking,” needed in today’s economics.

VSP Jewelry Design Gallery was an established business at the Town Center for 31 years but closed recently due to COVID-19 shutdowns. (See the previous article).

YeeMan says, “This new relationship with Red Sky Gallery allows me to get back into jewelry design, which is my first love. This gallery is a beautiful space, fine art surrounds me and inspires me all day.”

YeeMan will be able to take in jewelry repairs for drop-off, too. She plans to be on-site for jewelry design appointments every Monday and Tuesday. (appointments are recommended). Other appointment days are always available upon request.

Jewelry and watch repairs can be dropped off at the Red Sky Gallery counter during any of their daily hours, currently Monday through Saturday from noon to 4:00pm. Red Sky Gallery hours will be extended for the fall and winter holiday season.

On October 10th, YeeMan plans to highlight the October Opal gemstone. She will have drawings for Opal gemstones for those attending. She plans to highlight each month's gemstone in some way.

Please plan to stop by and welcome YeeMan back to Lake Forest Park during the opening reception this Saturday, October 10th, from noon to 4:00pm.

Later that day at Red Sky Gallery, Laura is holding an opening reception for another artist, Debbie Bianchi, from 4:00-7:00pm.

“Debbie is a self- taught Seattle painter who enjoys the opportunity to share her perspective of what she sees as beauty. With her distinctive style specializing in birds and blossoms, she seeks to merge abstraction with representational images in many layers of color and shape.”

Red Sky Gallery photo by Laura Michaelson

Red Sky Gallery is a large open space; however, masks and social distancing measures will be used for both receptions.

Laura says,” I want to make these fun and safe events for everyone. I hope many in the community can join in with me to celebrate these two fine artists!”

The Red Sky Gallery is located on the upper level of the Lake Forest Park Town Center, between Two Trading Tigers and Mad Cow Yarn, intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Laura has been working hard to keep the gallery going; she just got it started when COVID-19 hit. (See previous article)

Joanne Shellan is featured artist at Red Sky Gallery for September

Saturday, August 29, 2020

Sunbeam and the Shade

Featured Artist Joanne Shellan is an award winning artist. Her show at Red Sky Gallery is the month of September, her Reception is September 5th, 4pm to 7pm.

With over 3k sq ft of space we have plenty of room to spread out and see the show and mingle safely and meet the artist. We are on the upper level of the LFP Town Center.

Joanne's Bio: Painter of Your Life in Color

When your father and grandmother paint, you come by the addiction to the brush honestly. Painter Joanne Shellan says, “I always felt at home doing any kind of art, from as far back as I can remember.”

Joanne Shellan, born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, has studied and painted full-time for almost twenty years in Kirkland, WA. After graduating from WSU in Communications and Art, she worked at her family business until she began her second career as an artist.

Waiting, Moored in the Sun

She recently studied under master painter, Liana Bennett, Kenmore, WA. Over her career, she has explored a variety of mediums moving from watercolors (in which she received her Signature Membership from the Northwest Watercolor Society) to acrylics and oils.

Shellan’s paintings have won dozens of awards including a first and second place award this past summer. She has been in over three dozen group shows and had almost two dozen solo shows.

She was chosen to represent Washington State in a year-long solo show at the Governor’s Mansion in Olympia, WA in 2012-2013.

The Sea is Calling

Two of Joanne’s donated paintings were auctioned for $10,000. Her work is part of the permanent collection at Evergreen Hospital (Kirkland, WA) and the Strom Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island, WA.

The Seattle Public Library’s Foundation used one of her images for all their media in 2015. She is represented by several fine art galleries in Oregon and Washington. Shellan also co-started the Kirkland Artist Studio Tour which is now entering its fifteenth year.

Gently Rocking

A consistent theme in her impressionist style paintings has been to push the boundaries of color and use strong compositions to support her bold brushstrokes.

“I like to paint subjects that are a little off the beaten path, especially small groups of people in interiors, city and landscapes.”

To help keep her painting style loose, she likes to turn her paintings upside down and then take off her glasses.

How are they doing? Red Sky Gallery

Tuesday, May 5, 2020

Laura Michaelson had just established her beautiful art gallery in Town Center when she had to shut it down. Reporter Luanne Brown reached out to find out how she was coping.

From Laura Michaelson, Red Sky Gallery

Red Sky Gallery has used Etsy as an online store, where we have been putting art on products like masks, mugs, t-shirts and sweatshirts. See Etsy shop

Our website Red Sky Galleries has up to date available art and wearable art such as jewelry, scarfs, pottery and glassware for sale for shipping or curbside pick-up.

We are promoting sales on Facebook, and Instagram.

Artists are offering sales on items from paintings to jewelry just in time for Mother’s day. We take the orders over the phone and email and ship or set up a curbside pick-up.

We were not given any rent forgiveness and the loan lines are impossible. So sales help pay the basic bills and if we have any extra, which we haven’t yet, we are saving for the next month.

I am not taking any personal income from the gallery, to keep the doors open. I am optimistic for the future of the gallery. We hope to provide a place for people to go who usually go to art festivals etc.

This is has been a life long and dream and I will fight hard to keep this gallery going.  It means the world to me.

Red Sky Gallery is located on the upper level of Town Center, Lake Forest Park, intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Jamee Linton-Kelly
ARTIST STATEMENT

My artwork is a journey through my life and experiences. Each painting is a balance between planning and spontaneity. Like the tide this balance ebbs and flows from one extreme to the other. I allow each piece to create it's own path even if it strays from my initial vision.

Natural elements are by far one of my truest inspirations. I love the moods that nature provides and I capitalize on this in my work. Color is also a huge love and source of inspiration. I love how the use of color and color combinations can create feelings and energy flow within a piece.

My landscapes are an impression of the world around us and while they have specific natural and regional influences they are rarely a replication of an existing scene. I draw upon the fundamentals of art and design and the emotions conjured during the artistic process to turn these images that exist in my mind into something real.

I am attracted to scenes that draw me in and offer a place for my mind to rest. It is my hope that my paintings offer this to the viewer as well. That they remind you of somewhere you have been or want to go and that they provide a meditative escape.

Red Sky Gallery grand opening Saturday in Lake Forest Park

Paintings on the wall. Jewelry in and on the cabinets,
made of metal, semi-precious stones, wood

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Steven H. Robinson

The Red Sky Gallery will hold its Grand Opening on Saturday, September 21, 2019 from 5 to 9pm at its location on the upper level wing of Town Center in Lake Forest Park at the intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Large Debbie Tomassi paintings line this wall

Red Sky is a large, open space with a lofty ceiling and bright, white walls filled with art works by local artists.

Debbie Tomassi, Marjorie Thompson, Kathy Collins, and Blanche Niznik are familiar names - artists who live in Lake Forest Park. There are a dozen more in the gallery.

All of the artists will be at the Grand Opening, as well as a jazz duo, wine, cheese, and chocolate from The Chocolate Man.

Karen Dedrickson will demonstrate sumi-e technique
at the grand opening - black ink on white paper

Featured artist Karen Dedrickson will demonstrate the sumi-e Japanese art style of black ink on paper.

Owner Laura Michaelson is not an artist herself. She had a professional career in Leadership Development. Microsoft was her last client.

She had her 50th birthday and something clicked for her. "I felt free. I felt like I had paid my dues and now I could do something I really wanted to do." And that something was an art gallery.

She had remodeled her kitchen by herself, so had no qualms about taking down a wall to combine two spaces at Town Center. She laid the flooring and built a set of display boxes. She painted, and created moveable divider walls.

There is a special gift shop section as well as many small pieces of art and several jewelry artists.

"We have a number of pieces in the affordable price range, suitable for gifts."

Leather bracelets with semi-precious stones. Gold and black metal earrings. Beautiful tiny, painted sky scenes. Even a smooth, turned wood jar and a wooden box holding kitchen utensils.

There are a lot of birds in the paintings and ravens are a frequent theme.

Red Sky had a soft opening six weeks ago and already looks different from when it was photographed for this article. Pieces sell and are replaced with new ones. The Gallery is slightly different each day.

Laura has already connected with all the shops alongside hers, and a few downstairs like The Chocolate Man.

"Community is important," she said, "and this is a wonderful community." The business owners have tentative plans for events, using Laura's large space.

Now she wants to reach outside the shops and use art as a vehicle for creating community. "We need this now to bring out beauty and to bring people together."

Piano Time hits the right notes with visitors and home town players

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

NW Melodies by Marcia Lippert
in place at Goodwill

Once again Piano Time was a big hit! The third year of this “street piano” adventure brought artists, musicians and community together for an interactive experience. Eleven artist-decorated pianos were placed around Shoreline, cared for by adjoining businesses and neighbors and enthusiastically played by thousands of Shoreline residents and visitors throughout the month of August.

Pianos were generously donated to the cause, artists were selected from a Call for Artists, a collaborative committee of City staff, musicians, artists, Prosser Piano staff and community set the plan in motion, and numerous local businesses enthusiastically agreed to participate to make this all-August project a success. In addition Piano Time was supported in part by Prosser Piano, GBC International Bank and a generous 4Culture Group Arts Award.

If you didn’t get to see all the pianos you can find images on the Public Art page of the City’s website.

Sports and Tunes on Backyard Birds
By Susan Pope at Paramount Park

Each piano had a “note book” attached and collected comments from both pianists and performers – children, teens, adults, seniors, beginners to professionals. The comments were wildly enthusiastic with many wishing the pianos could remain in place indefinitely and definitely supported their return in 2015.

Piano Time 2014 celebrated with bookend concerts at Arts al Fresco on August 7 with three pianos in play, and the Michael Stegner and Friends trio in the City Hall courtyard concert on August 27. Along with noon and evening concerts in the parks, musical theater outdoors at City Hall, new Gallery and Sculpture Stroll exhibit openings, plus chalk art on the trail, this was definitely an art-filled summer to remember.

Piano Time 2014 Notebook Quotes:

The Park at Town Center

  • I’ve really enjoyed the pianos around the area. At first I didn’t play at the library park too often because of the seven or eight missing keys, but it was great at the end of the month to have the keys fixed. But anyway, I hope this program continues for many more years. I love playing these pianos and listening to the different styles of music that comes with each musical passerby. So again, thank you Shoreline.
  • Loved being here – very healing for some old fears and made new happy memories in their place. Wonderful 55th birthday gift.
  • I’ve been playing piano since I was 3 years old. It’s brought me around the US, to Germany with Macklemore and even earned a Grammy nomination with Macklemore from playing “Same Love” on The Heist. It’s amazing what music can do for people and where it can bring you. I encourage people to follow their joy in music and let it inspire, heal and uplift you!! Josh Rawlings
  • Music is, at the best of times, an expression of heartfelt emotion to be used as an extension of oneself. At the worst of times it is a plague – nothing more and nothing less. Perhaps actions such as these will allow us to cleanse from ourselves the impurity of insincere music. I truly hope so. Good luck, music lovers.
  • Had so much fun playing a duet with Mom.
  • Possibly my favorite piano ever!! I played 2 jazz standards. Four missing keys made it tough.
  • Thank you so much for Piano Time. I was so excited Sky gets to host this beautiful flower piano this year! The action on the keys feels really nice. I am cashier at Sky and also a pianist on the side. Love to play the music that makes people happy!
  • Yea! Mom and I enjoyed finding and playing on all the colorful pianos last year—so happy to see them again! Thank you!
  • So happy to see the piano on display! So good to take part in this fun event.

  • This is a great idea! I hope that if they are not already in Seattle they can get them too.
  • I played these jazz standards for a flowery piano: Days of Wine and Roses, Poinciana, Red Roses for a Blue Lady
  • Thank you 1000 times plus. This is amazing!
  • What a wonderful idea—becoming a tradition, perhaps Goldberg variations are beyond me, but casual chord changes sound good on … does this piano have a name? Alice?
  • Beautiful tonal quality!...I wish they had something like this in San Diego, California!... visiting family here!
  • I’m jealous of everyone for playing so well. I Just tapped some keys, remembering old tunes. (6 days later) Back again! I’ll play a little more, try to get better. It’s cooler out here than in my house!
  • This piano is beautiful and it’s sunny out and August in Seattle, right here writing in this silly piano book, right now is perfect.
  • My granddaughter loves to sit down and play her nice pieces before entering the store. Nice thing!
  • We just love the pianos! Thank you Shoreline for such a fun and interactive art project! We always meet the nicest and most interesting people at the pianos. Kudos to you!
  • We drove up from Bonney Lake WA. What a wonderful way to bring such creative minds together for something that looks and sounds so great!
