Youth Council spreads holiday cheer to senior citizens

Saturday, December 14, 2013

Cards made by LFP Youth Council for local senior citizens

After their regular December meeting, the Lake Forest Park Youth Council decided to spread some holiday cheer by making cards for senior citizens living at a nearby assisted living residence.

The Lake Forest Park Youth Council is composed of a group of about 15 students from neighboring high schools that meet regularly at Lake Forest Park City Hall.

The program is coordinated through the City of Lake Forest Park. They are supervised by adult volunteer mentors Paul Sundberg and Carol Dahl.

They participate in projects throughout the community-helping with city programs and with various community events, most recently the Halloween celebration at Third Place Commons.

Multiple Youth Council members are also currently volunteering their time in city departments and can be seen weekly helping out around Lake Forest Park City Hall.

Educational opportunity for student pages in Olympia

Monday, February 4, 2013

The capitol dome in Olympia
OLYMPIA - State Rep. Ruth Kagi (D – Shoreline) is seeking students from 14 to 16 years of age who are interested in serving as pages in the state House of Representatives during the 2013 session.

“Paging is a weeklong, hands-on civics lesson,” Kagi said. “Each year, I’m delighted to meet the bright young men and women who come to Olympia to participate in the legislative process.”

Pages perform ceremonial tasks and miscellaneous errands for legislators and legislative staff.  In addition to their paging duties, pages also spend two hours per day in a classroom setting learning about the history of the legislature and how a bill becomes law.

Legislators sponsor a limited number of pages during the session, which this year runs through April 28.  Kagi seeks to sponsor students who live and attend school within the 32nd Legislative District, which includes northwest Seattle, Shoreline, Lynnwood and parts of Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace.

Interested students need permission from a parent or guardian, as well as their school, to participate in the page program.  More information and an application can be found on the House Page Program web page,

Contact Rep. Ruth Kagi, 360-786-7910.

Budget committee of county council proposes an August ballot measure to replace the aging Youth Services Center

Saturday, April 7, 2012

The Metropolitan King County Council’s Budget and Fiscal Management Committee gave a “do-pass” recommendation today to a measure that would ask voters to fund construction of a new Children and Family Justice Center to replace the County’s dilapidated Youth Services Center. The legislation now goes to the full Council for final consideration.

“These facilities handle some of our most important and sensitive cases involving families and children,” said Councilmember Bob Ferguson, prime sponsor of the legislation. “King County has a responsibility to serve their justice needs and no one disputes that these facilities are dilapidated. They must be replaced.”

The proposed legislation places a measure on the August primary ballot for approval of a nine-year property tax levy lid lift of seven cents per $1,000 of assessed value. If approved by the voters, the levy will generate approximately $200 million for construction of a new Children and Family Justice Center. The annual cost to the median homeowner in King County would be less than $25.

The proposed new Children and Family Justice Center would replace the decaying Youth Services Center. Located at 12th Avenue and East Alder Street, the Center is the County’s central facility for cases involving children—juvenile offender cases, child abandonment, abuse and neglect cases and cases involving runaways.

Replacement of the Youth Services Center has been King County’s highest-priority capital project since 2008.
“With brown water, uncomfortable temperatures, and no space for families to meet privately with attorneys, the current deteriorating state of the county juvenile justice buildings is a travesty to the children and families who receive services there,” said Councilmember Larry Phillips. “Providing, safe, efficient and effective regional justice facilities for the children and families of King County must be a priority, and one we see through to completion.”

To place the measure on the August primary ballot, the Council must act by the end of April.

Shoreline Youth Jam 2012 cancelled - not enough performers

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Zoology, 2009 Youth Jam

SHORELINE YOUTH JAM 2012, the City-wide youth musical talent competition scheduled for Friday, April 6th, at the Shoreline Community College PUB has been cancelled.

Organizers cited a low quantity of entries this year as the reason for cancellation. After a wonderful program of performers in its first year of 2011, the 2012 open competition for any musical performer or group 18 years old and under residing in Shoreline, received an insufficient number of entries to support the competition format by the submittal deadline of March 16, 2012.

Shoreline Youth Jam Committee organizers from several Shoreline neighborhoods, working with support from City of Shoreline and Shoreline Community College staff, plan to meet later this year to determine what the future of Youth Jam may be. It is hoped that an event of this kind, showcasing the musical talents of Shoreline’s youth in an open format, may return in the future.

Contact the organizers and/or City of Shoreline staff with your ideas for supporting a Youth Jam style event, and/or other possible venues for the organization of local performances to showcase the musical talents of Shoreline youth.

Fate Descends Takes Grand Prize on a night with many highlights

Fate Descends won the Grand Prize at Youth Jam 2011

Friday night, March 4, marked the first time the Youth Jam music competition brought to the stage contestants from all over the City of Shoreline. The 200+ audience who witnessed Shoreline Youth Jam 2011 in the Shoreline Community College PUB, heard and saw performances from nine different acts working with a range of musical genres and instruments – soloists to pop bands delighted the crowd. Performer ages spanned 8 to 18. The breadth of talent brought amazement to many faces, and the competition judges were brimming with positive comments for each act.

“Great job making the transition from local event to citywide. The new venue, acts and judges were outstanding!” said Jack Malek, RBCA Board and Treasurer.

After an evening of many stellar performances, the event MC, trumpeter Jason Parker of The Jason Parker Quartet, directed the three judges to award Grand ($300), Second ($200), and Third ($100) prizes, with optional Honorable Mention in Musicianship, Creativity, and Performance certificates available at the judges discretion. Each performer also received a certificate for participation.

Misoneism, blue guitar duo, took Second Prize
After a short deliberation, Grand Prize was awarded to Fate Descends, a rock trio. Second Prize went to Misoneism, a blues guitar duo, and a returning act from last year. Third Prize was awarded to Alejandra Guido, singer/guitarist/songwriter.

Alejandra Guido took Third Prize
The judges also decided to award separate certificates recognizing special strengths in each of the three judging criteria.
  • Honorable Mention: Musicianship was awarded to Karen Haining, a solo pianist.
  • Honorable Mention: Creativity was given to Freak Out, a pop rock group.
  • Honorable Mention: Performance was awarded to D-Frost, a pop rock/RandB act.
The Grand Prize winning Fate Descends closed the show with a driving encore of one of their original compositions.

Judges: Josh Rawlings, Leah Stillwell, Doug Reid
The three volunteer judges represented some of the Seattle area’s more noteworthy working musicians and youth mentors;
  • Josh Rawlings, keyboardist of The Teaching, Soul Kata, and many other groups;
  • Leah Stillwell, singer with The Leah Stillwell Trio,
  • SCC’s own Doug Reid, trumpeter and music professor.

The judges were lauded by the audience with applause for their thoughtful comments to the musicians on stage after each performance, and the encouragement to all kids on hand to keep music and performance a part of their lives.

“I had a great time. It was an awesome night full of wonderful talent,” said Leah Stillwell after the show.

Doug Reid also expressed pleasure in being involved with Youth Jam this year.

Josh Rawlings later wrote: “Thanks all for a very memorable experience! Had a blast, and I was getting flooded with nostalgia of doing events like this when I was their age...man, does it feel good to be giving back!”
