YMCA expands foster care work with free memberships for kids

Wednesday, June 26, 2019

“No child chooses to go into foster care,” said Loria Yeadon, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle. “But we can make foster care a better experience for our children who need us most.”

The Y is expanding its foster care services by offering King County kids in foster care free memberships at any of their locations. The Y has 13 branches throughout King County, with a new location opening in Kent this fall.

Shoreline has the Dale Turner YMCA 19290 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133

This announcement builds upon the Y’s long history of licensing and supporting foster care families.

For over 30 years the Y has offered foster parent training, behavioral health counseling, cultural competency training, and 24-hour crisis consultations.

The Y also combats homelessness, a problem that affects one in three young adults exiting foster care, by offering free case management and housing resources.

Parents who choose to foster through the Y receive free memberships, child care during workouts, access to Parents Night Out program, weight loss and disease prevention programs and so much more. The Y offers income based pricing so that no family is ever turned away.

“Two years ago we celebrated 30 years as a licensed child placing agency. We’ve learned a lot about the best ways to build our foster care community and provide support for foster families. Offering free memberships ensures all kids and families have the resources and opportunities for healthy, thriving lives,” explained Yeadon.
“Further we are always looking for partners who can help us do even more.”

Dale Turner Family YMCA Annual Healthy Kids Day® Saturday

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Dale Turner Family YMCA Annual Healthy Kids Day®

On Saturday, April 21, the Dale Turner Family YMCA in Shoreline is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active at the annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families.

Healthy Kids Day is an opportunity to ignite children’s imaginations so that they can imagine what they’ll accomplish this summer. The day-long event features activities such as: healthy cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts, fun games, free cycle helmet with fittings (for the first 100 kids) and program demonstration to motivate and teach families how to develop and maintain healthy routines at home throughout the summer months.

Healthy Kids Day, celebrated at over 1,500 Ys across the country by over 1.2 million participants, works to get more kids moving and learning, creating habits that they continue all summer long.

When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Research shows that without access to out-of-school learning activities, kids fall behind academically. Kids also gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year.

As spring turns to summer, Healthy Kids Day is a powerful reminder not to let children idle away their summer days. Instead, the Y wants families to focus on helping children imagine what they can accomplish over the summer.

“When a child is healthy, happy, and supported they can make great things happen,” says Paul Lwali, Executive Director, Dale Turner Family YMCA.
“We believe in the potential of all children, and we strive to help kids find that potential within themselves. A child’s development is never on vacation and Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to educate families and motivate kids to stay active in spirit, mind and body throughout the summer.”

Keeping Kids Healthy All Summer Long

In celebration of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y offers the following tips to help families develop healthy habits this summer that can have a lifetime effect:
  • High Five the Fruits and Veggies – Make sure kids get at least five servings a day, the minimum number nutritionists recommend to maintain healthy childhood development. And to keep kids’ taste buds evolving, have everyone in the family try at least one bite of a new fruit or vegetable at least once a month.
  • Read Together – The summer is a great time to enjoy books with summer program participants—and 30 minutes a day goes a long way! Take trips to the local library or create a family reading challenge to see who can log the most minutes of reading. Encourage youth to create their own stories as well.
  • Get Moving! – Activities that require movement also help kids flex their mental muscle. Use materials in unique ways: ask youth to build models, manipulate tools or develop their own theatrical scenes.
  • Play Together – Play may be the best way to prevent childhood obesity. By putting more play into your family’s day, you will soon find yourself getting the activity that will have your family feeling energized and strong.
  • Make sleep a priority – Doctors recommend 10-12 hours of sleep a day for children ages 5-12 and 7-8 hours per night for adults. Sleep plays a critical role in maintaining our healthy immune system, metabolism, mood, memory, learning and other vital functions.

The Dale Turner Family YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day takes place at 19290 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline from 10am -1pm and features fun, active play and educational activities.

Healthy Kids Day encourages youth and families to awaken summer imagination and this cannot be done without proper nutrition. Walmart Foundation is proud to sponsor Healthy Kids Day to raise awareness about the importance of food security and nutrition for youth and families.

Adopting healthy habits can help reduce childhood obesity

Friday, September 8, 2017

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and while the dangers of childhood obesity are well chronicled, many families need support changing their families’ habits with the ultimate goal of being a healthy weight.

That’s why the YMCA of Greater Seattle — a leading community-based organization dedicated to improving health—wants families to understand the dangers of childhood obesity and ways to reverse course through improved eating habits and increased physical activity.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of obesity has remained stable at about 17 percent and affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents.

Today, obesity affects one in six children and one in three are overweight, which poses greater risks for many health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and some cancers.

Here in Washington, about 25 percent of all children (ages 2-4 receiving WIC services) are considered overweight or obese and about 23 percent of 10th graders in Washington’s public schools were overweight or obese. (Source: Washington State Department of Health).

“Successfully lowering obesity rates in children requires the whole family to be on board with making changes when it comes to food and activity choices.” said Brie Davis, Director, Membership and Healthy Living, YMCA of Greater Seattle.
“Kids are like sponges and they tend to soak up the choices of those around them. By modeling positive habits around food and activity, adults can help kids adopt them too!
“It can be hard to know what habits to model though. Families that arent sure how to get started can reach out to their health care provider or organizations like the Y that provide support are great first steps.”

Dale Turner Y in Shoreline
192nd and Aurora
The Y is a leading voice in keeping kids healthy and preventing childhood obesity in Greater Seattle through initiatives like ACT (Actively Changing Together) and Youth Sports programs.

The following tips are some great ways to incorporate healthier eating habits and more physical activity and into your daily family routine:

  • Eat and Drink Healthy: Make water the drink of choice and encourage everyone to fill half their plates with fruits and vegetables by offering two or three colorful options at every meal. As a family choose a new fruit and veggie every week to taste together. Place a full pitcher of water on the table during meals, and allow children to pour their own water.
  • Play Every Day/Go Outside: Children should have at least an hour a day of unstructured play outside (when possible) and break a sweat at least three times a week by getting 20 minutes or more of vigorous physical activity. Join your children in games that get your hearts pumping and bodies moving.
  • Get Together: Eat as a family as frequently as possible. Involve kids in meal planning, preparation and clean up. In addition, adults should take a break from electronics and spend one-to-one time each day with their kids, enjoying one another’s company.
  • Reduce Recreational Screen Time: Time spent in front of a television, computer, tablet, cell phone or video games should be limited to two hours or less per day. Make a family plan to reduce screen time at home (i.e. turn off screens during meals, go for a walk after a meal, set a timer to remind you to power down the screen).
  • Sleep Well: Kids and adults need to keep a regular sleep schedule; unwind together in the evenings by reading a book or listening to soft music to ensure the body is preparing for sleep. Kids are growing and need 10-12 hours of healthy sleep per night and seven to eight hours for adults.

In addition to being healthy at home, there is a need to maintain healthy habits while attending out-of-school programs. To create healthy environments for all children the Greater Seattle YMCA is implementing Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards in our before and after school programs. Our goal is to make the healthy choice the easy choice for your child while he or she is in our care.

To foster children’s health, the Y strives to:
  • Provide a fruit and/or vegetable at all meals and snacks.
  • Only provide low-fat milk and water as beverages.
  • Serve meals and snacks family-style.
  • Set limits on screen time.
  • Provide daily physical activity (outdoors when possible).
  • Promote and support exclusive breastfeeding for infants.
  • Adults model healthy food and beverage choices and active play.
  • Provide parent/caregiver education to encourage healthy behaviors at home.

Kenmore Library teams up with Northshore Y to help kids

Monday, July 18, 2016

The Kenmore Library has partnered with the City of Kenmore and the Northshore YMCA to provide weekly food and programs for local kids in need during the summer.

Kenmore librarians will be visiting the Northshore Y Summer Lunch program at Kenmore City Hall every Tuesday from July 12 - August 30 from 11:30am - 1pm.

Listen to a story or do a fun STEM activity. Hop on the Mobile Learning Lab and code with Google's CS program. Grab a great book to read. Learn all summer long!

They are teaming up with other community organizations such as Totes to Go, to provide snacks the kids can take away with them at the end of the day and providing activities at a feeding site at the First Lutheran Church in Bothell.

King County Library System (KCLS) serves 18 school districts within its 2,307 square mile service area. In many communities, nearly half of children face high food insecurity, and rely on free meals during the school year.

In summer, they go hungry, while summer nutrition programs have difficulty connecting kids to the meals available. Hunger and boredom all summer affect children’s capacity to learn, and they fall behind their more affluent peers.

KCLS and local nutrition agencies combined their missions in 2015, providing free meals and library summer learning outreach in high-need areas.

All the King County libraries provide activities for all kids during the summer. Check with your closest library for details.

The Dale Turner Family YMCA Focuses on Prevention during National Diabetes Awareness Month

Monday, November 3, 2014

As the prediabetes rate continues to rise, few Shoreline residents know they are at risk

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and the Dale Turner Family YMCA is encouraging residents of Shoreline to learn their risks for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and to take preventive steps to potentially reduce their chances of developing the disease.

New statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that one in four Americans (86 million people) have prediabetes, up from 79 million in 2010. Prediabetes is a condition in which a person’s blood glucose is elevated, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis.

Only 10 percent of those with prediabetes know they have it. With awareness and simple actions, people with prediabetes may prevent the onset of diabetes.

“As the number of new people with prediabetes continues to rise, it is important residents of Shoreline understand what a prediabetes diagnosis means, and options available to reverse course,” said Health and Well-Being Program Supervisor Rene De los Santos. “Fortunately, simple lifestyle changes can greatly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and the Y can help people make the necessary changes to improve health.”

Individuals can assess their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes by taking a simple test at YMCA.net/diabetes. Through this assessment, visitors can also learn how lifestyle choices and family history help determine the ultimate risk for developing the disease. Several factors that could put a person at risk for type 2 diabetes include race, age, weight and activity level.

If a person is at risk, a diabetes screening conducted by a physician can confirm a diabetes or prediabetes diagnosis.

The Dale Turner Family YMCA is helping to improve health through programs such as the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program. The program focuses on small changes that will improve participant’s overall health and well-being.

Making some basic lifestyle changes that contribute to weight loss and healthy living can decrease the risk for type 2 diabetes. Among these are:

  • Eat fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Choose fish, lean meats and poultry without skin.
  • Aim for whole grains with every meal.
  • Be moderately active at least 30 minutes per day five days a week.
  • Choose water to drink instead of beverages with added sugar.
  • Speak to your doctor about your diabetes risk factors, especially if you have a family history or are overweight.

To learn more about the Dale Turner Family YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, contact Health and Well-Being Program Supervisor Rene De Los Santos at 206-569-7017.

Financial assistance is available to anyone based on family income, number of household members, and the availability of Y funds. It is provided fairly and openly on a first come, first served basis.

Dale Turner Family YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® on April 26 Aims to Help Kids Exercise Minds and Bodies

Fun activities at Healthy Kids Day at the Y

On Saturday, April 26, the Dale Turner Family YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, features games, healthy cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts and more to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.

Bling and blong - sparkles and drumming
at Healthy Kids Day

YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, celebrated at nearly 1,600 Ys across the country, aims to get more kids moving and learning, so they can keep up the habit all summer long – a critical out-of-school time for kids’ health. Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically. Kids also gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year.

“One in three U.S. children is obese. This statistic, coupled with the fact that once summer hits, children will be more idle, demonstrates why it’s important to help families develop healthy habits now,” said Courtney Whitaker, Dale Turner Family Y Executive Director. “As part of the Y’s commitment to healthy living, through YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® our goal is to improve the health and well-being of kids and inspire habits they can continue into adulthood.”

Healthy Kids Day is a family event

In celebration of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, the Y offers the following tips to help families develop healthy habits:

  1. High Five the Fruits and Veggies – Make sure kids get at least five servings a day, the minimum number nutritionists recommend to maintain healthy childhood development.
  2. Foster an Early and Ongoing Passion for Books – Read to and with your kids. Help children read at every age and every stage of their development.
  3. Team Up for Athletic Events – Set a family goal of great health by teaming up for community or charity events like races, walks, fun runs, bike rides, etc.
  4. Volunteer Together – Find a cause that matters to the kids. Open their eyes to a world beyond themselves and the rich rewards that come from making a difference.
  5. Lead By Example – Be a good role model – kids can be influenced by seeing how hard their parents work at home or on the job, and how rewarding that experience is.

The Dale Turner Family Y’s Healthy Kids Day® will take place at 19290 Aurora Avenue North in Shoreline from 10:00am – 1:00pm. The free event will feature carnival games, a bounce house, prizes and more.
