90-Year-Old Dale Turner Family Y Member Receives Healthy Living Award from YMCA of Greater Seattle

Friday, April 11, 2014

Anne Sola giving her acceptance speech

For four years, Anne Sola has enthusiastically attended Zumba Gold® classes twice a week at the Dale Turner Family Y. She is also 90-years-old and sharp as a tack. Anne was honored for her positive attitude and inspirational lifestyle with the 2014 YMCA of Greater Seattle Healthy Living Award on April 2nd at the Grand Hyatt in downtown Seattle.

“I feel like I won an Oscar,” Anne said as she accepted her award in front of a room full of YMCA board members, employees, donors, and supporters at the 2014 Annual Campaign Victory Celebration.

Each year, three Y members chosen from the 13 local Y branches are honored by the YMCA of Greater Seattle for exemplifying the spirit of one of our areas of focus. The three areas of focus are Healthy Living, Youth Development and Social Responsibility.

“After my son kept nagging me to join the Y, I finally did and it was the best decision I’ve ever made,” Anne said. “The Y is such a wonderful, friendly place and I’m most grateful for all of the people who have made it possible for me to be this healthy at this age,” she added. Anne’s favorite part of Zumba Gold® is the water break and the instructor, Rene De Los Santos, describes the participants, whose ages range from 50 to 90-years-old, as “the out of control bunch.” As she nears her 91st birthday in the coming weeks, her advice to others who want to live a healthy lifestyle is to “just keep moving and think positively.”

Rep. Ruth Kagi Honored as the YMCA Legislative Champion

Friday, January 31, 2014

Rep. Ruth Kagi named YMCA Legislative Champion

On Thursday, January 23rd, Rep. Ruth Kagi accepted an award from the YMCA as the organization’s Legislative Champion. Rep. Kagi has been an advocate for children and families throughout her entire career. The award was presented by Bob Gilbertson, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle.

While presenting the award, Gilbertson emphasized that Rep. Kagi has been a strong champion for children and families in the Washington House of Representatives. Gilbertson spoke of her passion, practicality and perseverance. “Even in the face of tough times, Ruth fights hard to build strong, safe communities for our children and families,” Gilbertson said.

Rep. Kagi has served the 32nd legislative district in Olympia for 15 years, focusing on improving the quality of early learning and child care and strengthening foster care. Kagi credited the YMCA, pointing out that the legislature would not have accomplished nearly as much were it not for the support of the Y and similar organizations. She also mentioned the need for smart, dedicated public servants, and encouraged all the youth in attendance to one day run for office.

The mission of the YMCA is to promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The YMCA is currently running its annual campaign. To donate call 206-363-0446 or visit the website.

Local YMCA board member reports on Y General Assembly

Saturday, July 27, 2013

By Pearl Noreen
Board Vice Chair
Dale Turner YMCA

What an honor to be invited to the General Assembly of the YMCA in Philadelphia with Dale Turner Family YMCA Associate Executive Brian McLaughlin.

As a volunteer and Board Vice Chair it was an opportunity to hear the vision of the national YMCA with its 19 million members and 900 branches. Our own Dale Turner Family Y has 17,000 members. They rolled out their new slogan “The Y.so much more.” Their 5 year goal is to expand membership and branches in a bold way.

Their plan is to expand healthy living programs including diabetes and obesity prevention programs and so much more. They will enhance youth development programs with increased after school programs, early learning support, summer learning loss targets and graduation rate support and so much more. The Y’s commitment to social responsibility will be seen in partnering and networking in innovative and creative ways and so much more!

An array of speakers added insights:

Sanjay Gupta reminded of the obesity issues and suggested:

  • Sitting 6 hours a day shortens your life span.
  • Pushing your plate away when you are 80% full.
  • Eating too much sugar (200 grams a day) and fructose (130 pounds a year) is harmful to your health.

Kathy Dempsey shared the Shedding theory. The cornerstone of the shedding philosophy is based on the fact that lizards grow by shedding their skin. If they don’t shed, they die. The same is true with humans and organizations. If you don’t grow, you’ll die. Shed or you’re dead! Shedding involves taking on the new and letting go of the old.

Shawn Anchor spoke on ‘The Happiness Advantage” and revealed that social connections are the best predictor of long-term happiness. Writing down 3 gratitudes a day for a week changed neural patterns in the brain for 6 months plus people became more positive. Seventy-five percent of job success is attributed to strong social connections, optimism and perceptions that stress is a challenge. Happiness is a choice!

Sally Hogshead stated that:

  • Don’t find the light. You are the light.
  • The thing that makes you different may be the thing that distinguishes you.
  • Be yourself everyone else is taken.
  • The world is not changed by people who sort of care.

Outlier author Malcom Gladwell declared that the YMCA is the single most important capitalization engine in the country. Capitalization is the rate of people who fulfill their purpose in life. It tells us whether a society is successful. The US rates are quite low. But Gladstone says capitalization is the most important factor in the health of the country. It is how good a job we do with the talent we have. Our job is to help everyone find their gift.

The Y is an expert in capitalization -- helping people rise to their greatest potential ….. and so much more!

Dale Turner Family YMCA Summer Meals Program for children

Thursday, June 13, 2013

Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child’s need for good nutrition.

The Dale Turner Family TMCA is proud to announce the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP), which provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to help children get the nutrition they need to learn, play and grow throughout the summer months when they are out of school.

Hunger is one of the most severe roadblocks to the learning process. Lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins again.

Hunger also may make children more prone to illness and other health issues. The SFSP is designed to fill out nutrition game and make sure children can get the nutritious meal they need. Meals will be made available at no charge to attending children 18 years of age and younger.

Youth and Government at the Dale Turner YMCA

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

By Erik Schmidt, Teen Coordinator
Dale Turner Family YMCA

I run a program at the Dale Turner YMCA in Shoreline called Youth and Government. This year our delegation took 21 students, grades 8 through 12, down to Olympia for a four-day student-led mock legislature program.

450 students from around the state joined up to run a simulated mock legislature program that has students in the roles of senators, representatives, press, lobbyists and other leadership positions. Every year students run for eight major officer positions and the winners will serve as student leaders for the next year of the program.

This year we were fortunate enough to win two of the eight major positions from our Dale Turner Delegation that operates out of our Shoreline YMCA.

Shorecrest junior Amelia Brown

Amelia Brown, a junior from Shorecrest High School, won the position of Editor-and-Chief of the Youth Legislature newspaper titled the Capital Chronicles.

Dino Nzanga, Jr.
Youth Governor
In addition, we also have the next Youth Governor, Dino Nzanga Jr, who is also a junior at Shorecrest High School. Dino will serve as the face of the program for the next year and will head to the Youth Governors Conference in Washington DC over the summer.

We also had an honor bestowed upon one of our 8th grade students from Kellogg Middle School. RJ Johnson won Page of the Year, which is the most prestigious award an 8th grade student can win.

I am extremely proud of all of our students who participated. We look to continue our success and growth into the next year.

Shorecrest students selected for prestigious positions at YMCA Youth Legislature

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Amellia Brown
Editor in Chief
Corrected 05-14-2013 10:31pm

By Madeleine Harriman

Though widely unknown, the YMCA’s Youth Legislature program is among the more prestigious of potential extracurriculars for high school students. Modeled off the Washington State’s legislative process, participants choose positions as Senators, House Representatives, Lobbyists, or members of the Press Corps, where they write and debate bills, run for Major Office positions, write articles, research current events and improve leadership skills. Delegations meet weekly at their local YMCA state-wide, culminating in a trip to Olympia to hold session in the Capitol building.

Members of the Dale Turner Delegation, as well as the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park communities, have recently been given reason to celebrate as two of their own have been elected to Major Office. Amelia Brown, Youth Editor-in-Chief and Dino Nzanga Jr., Youth Governor, are ecstatic with their election.

Dino Nzanga Jr., Youth Governor
As Editor-in-Chief, Amelia Brown will have five Assistant Editors reporting to her, as well as reporters and photographers under her jurisdiction. Her main responsibility is both writing articles and approving the final edition of The Capitol Chronicles, a daily newspaper about the goings-on the legislative session.

The most notable of the Major Offices is, without doubt, Youth Governor. In this position, Dino Nzanga Jr. will spend a good portion of his time either signing or vetoing bills after they’ve been passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate. He will select a cabinet of six who will represent him during debate.

Outside of Olympia, Dino will also meet with Jay Inslee to discuss bills passed by the Youth Legislature and their potential to be enacted by Washington State Legislature, as well as attending a Youth Governors Conference in Washington D.C. with the Youth Governors from other states. Overall, the program is fantastic, and does more than look good on college applications. Anyone who knows either Amelia Brown or Dino Nzanga Jr. has reason to be proud.

Dale Turner Family YMCA invites families to Play, Learn and Connect at the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, Saturday April 27

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Dale Turner Family YMCA is encouraging all kids and parents to come to a free community event on Saturday, April 27 – the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, which is the nation’s largest health day for families.

This year’s theme is “Play, Learn, Connect.” The goal is to inspire three things in local kids and families: healthy lifestyles and physical activity year-round, a commitment to educational activities now and over the summer and closer connections in the community.

From 10:00am-1:00pm on April 27, the Dale Turner Family YMCA will feature fun carnival games, face painting and activities for all ages, healthy snacks, facility tours and much more.

Challenge yourself on the obstacle course and jump around in the inflatable bounce house. Enjoy the entertainment of Radio Disney AM 1250 and engage in the demonstrations of Zumbatomic®, Tae Kwon Do, cooking and more! The first 100 kids will receive a free t-shirt and the YMCA joining fee will be waived all weekend.
Many U.S. children do not get the daily recommended hours of physical activity and reading, and daily amounts of healthy foods. According to the latest findings of the YMCA’s Family Health Snapshot – a survey of parents that gauges their children’s activity levels during the school year – only 19 percent of children get 60 minutes of physical activity, only 17 percent read books for fun and only 12 percent eat at least eight fruits and vegetables daily.

“At the Dale Turner Family YMCA, we know parents struggle to keep their kids physically and intellectually active every day. We want to help ensure fewer kids are at risk of childhood obesity and more kids excel in school,” said The Dale Turner Family YMCA Executive Director, Courtney Whitaker. “YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® will get kids moving and learning while also helping families get a jump on creating a healthier summer, and ultimately a healthier future.”

The mission of the YMCA is to promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The spacious 52,000-square-foot Dale Turner Family YMCA facility features a two-level parking garage, a gym, a four-lane, 25-yard pool, a cycling studio, men's and women's locker rooms and an upstairs weight and fitness area. There are over 120 classes included in facility membership.
