Dale Turner Family YMCA Kicks Off Partners With Youth Annual Campaign

Sunday, February 6, 2011

YMCA volunteers and staff launched the 2011 Partners With Youth Campaign on Tuesday, January 25,  raising funds to provide local children and families access to "life-changing, confidence-building Y programs."
The generosity of PWY donors helps the Y to bridge the gap to better health, well-being and educational opportunities for thousands of struggling families throughout King and south Snohomish counties. By nurturing the potential of youth, promoting healthy living and fostering social responsibility, the Y works to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to achieve their potential.
In our local community, the Dale Turner Family YMCA is stepping up to meet the needs facing our neighbors and strengthen our future with a commitment to secure $283,500.

“In our service area, more than 14% of families are living below the poverty level and 25% of our kids are overweight,” reports Courtney K. Whitaker, Executive Director of the Dale Turner Family YMCA. “We encourage our community to join us in supporting programs and services that change lives-together we can make a difference.”

Staff point out that a gift to the Y helps strengthen the foundations of community in lasting, important ways, like helping kids learn responsibility and teamwork, teaching teens and young adults leadership and career-building skills and supporting single parents with child care.

The Y says that it stewards its contributions very effectively, directing 95 cents of every dollar raised into its programs and services.

About Dale Turner Family YMCA
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Each day throughout the north King and south Snohomish County communities, the Dale Turner Family YMCA staff and volunteers work side by side with neighbors within their communities to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to achieve their potential. The Y works hard to make available for children the opportunity to not only reach their potential, but learn, grow and thrive on their way to becoming responsible and caring adults. The Y provides families with the tools to combat chronic health problems and diseases such as childhood obesity and diabetes because the Y believes healthy parents and children are necessary for strong, happy and secure families. The Dale Turner Family YMCA recognizes the rich diversity in its community and is committed to ensuring that all minorities, recent immigrants and language learners find a welcoming environment. At the Y, we believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.

Dale Turner Family YMCA Receives $1,000 Grant from HUGGIES

Friday, January 14, 2011

Dale Turner YMCA. Photo by Steven H. Robinson

YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) and HUGGIES® Little Swimmers® Brand, a product of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, have awarded the Dale Turner Family YMCA a $1,000 grant to expand the reach of its parent/child water enrichment programs in north King and south Snohomish Counties.

The gift is one of 150 grants of $1,000 each awarded by HUGGIES® Little Swimmers® Brand to Ys across the country. The funding will be used to provide financial assistance to low-income and underserved families who wish to engage in YMCA parent/child water enrichment programs, which are designed for children from 6 to 36 months old.

Specifically, the Dale Turner Family YMCA will offer financial assistance to low income families for Parent and Child Swim Lessons. The Y will also conduct a focus group to identify new ways to encourage parents and children who traditionally do not swim to enjoy the water together.
“We are pleased to support the Dale Turner Family YMCA in its efforts to provide such a critical program to the community,” said Stu Schneider, HUGGIES® Senior Brand Director. “The Y’s national reach and expertise in water safety provides an unparalleled opportunity for us to broaden our impact in local communities in north King and south Snohomish Counties and to help make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of young children and their families.”

Goals of YMCA parent/child water enrichment programs are to provide parents with vital water safety information, gently introduce young children to the water environment, and allow parents the opportunity to spend uninterrupted quality time with their child.
“Through our water enrichment programming, we are making a positive, life-long impact on the families we serve by fostering a love of water in children at an early age,” said Courtney K. Whitaker, Branch Executive Director. “This generous support from HUGGIES® will help us enhance our outreach efforts to underserved communities so we can offer parent/child water enrichment programs to more families who otherwise might not be able to participate.”

Since 2000, Kimberly-Clark has been a valued supporter of various YMCA healthy living and family strengthening programs. In 2008, the collaboration was expanded through the HUGGIES® Little Swimmers® Brand to enhance YMCA water safety programming, specifically parent/child water enrichment, through program grants.

Since its founding, the Y has been dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities.

The YMCA is now officially "The Y" - with a new logo

Friday, January 7, 2011

The Dale Turner Family YMCA is unveiling a new strategy to increase understanding of its cause, which is "strengthening the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility."

The Y will emphasize how it nurtures the potential of youth and teens, improves health and well-being and provides opportunities to support our neighbors and give back to our community.

The most visible change is the Y’s new logo, which points forward and is used in five different colors to reflect the vibrancy and diversity of the organization. Along with more than 2,600 Ys nationwide, the nonprofit will refer to itself collectively as “the Y.” Most importantly, the new strategy aims to help the public understand the Y’s impact and hopefully inspire involvement in the Y as a cause.

“This is a very important, exciting time for the Y,” said Courtney K. Whitaker, Branch Executive Director. “Since our opening in 2008, we’ve focused on building a community where all people, especially the young, are encouraged to learn, grow and thrive. Today we start a chapter that clarifies our belief that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.”

Below are highlights of how the Dale Turner Family YMCA currently strengthens communities in north King and south Snohomish counties through its three focus areas:

Youth Development
The Y helps guide children, teens and young adults of all socio-economic backgrounds to develop the character traits and skills essential to success. For example, the Y’s Hang Time program at Kellogg Middle School provides tutoring, mentoring and healthy activities free of charge, in partnership with the Shoreline School District and Cities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. The Y also provides high-quality child care throughout the region; including the newest Child Development Center focused on the youngest learners from infancy to pre-Kindergarten.

Healthy Living
Through its 12 branches and two resident camps, the Y equips people of all ages and abilities to be their personal best in spirit, mind and body. Its full-service facilities bring families closer together as they build healthy lifestyles, and trained lifestyle coaches help set personal health and well-being goals. Actively Changing Together (ACT!) helps overweight children and their families incorporate healthy changes. Exercise and Thrive empowers cancer survivors to restore their strength, and the Diabetes Prevention Program is equipping community members at risk of the disease to take control.

Social Responsibility
The Y listens and responds to our region’s most critical social needs. Through education and training in neighborhoods, connecting diverse demographic populations and building healthier communities with partners, the Y fosters care and respect for all. In partnership with Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, the Y operates POPY’S Café, serving more than 175 hot, healthy meals to community members in need each week.

Opening in 2008, the Dale Turner Family YMCA has quickly become a favorite gathering place in the community where families can engage in activity together, seniors can socialize and improve their health, and adults can find release from their busy lives. From youth sports and recreation to adult cooking programs and from swimming lessons to summer day camps, the Y has the cause of strengthening community at the core of our work. Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors in more than 20 local communities to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive at the Y.

The YMCA of Greater Seattle is one of the Northwest’s leading nonprofit organizations strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Y nurtures the development of children and teens, equips and encourages people to improve their health and well-being and mobilizes volunteers and community partners to address critical social needs. Founded in 1876, we enhance the lives of more than 171,500 people annually through 12 branches, two overnight camps and more than 200 program sites throughout King and south Snohomish counties.

The Dale Turner Family YMCA has received a $5,000 grant from JCPenney Afterschool to provide financial assistance for students in grades K-12 to participate in afterschool programs. This gift is one of 287 grants being awarded by JCPenney Afterschool to YMCAs around the country.
“JCPenney is firmly committed to supporting youth-serving organizations, like the Y, that are dedicated to providing positive, meaningful programs during the crucial hours of 3 pm to 6 pm, when studies show that a quarter of America’s children are unsupervised after school,” said Jodi Gibson, community relations director for JCPenney and president of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund.

The Y comments:
"Today, with thousands of afterschool programs across the country, the nation’s YMCAs are a leading resource for parents seeking a safe, enriching place for their children to go after school. YMCA afterschool programs focus on the holistic development of youth, which include elements that promote health and well-being, social skill development, emotional development, creativity, character development, sports and service."

In the Shoreline and Edmonds school districts, the YMCA serves 130 children from eleven schools at four sites. Over 40 percent of those children receive subsidies toward their program costs.
“The Dale Turner Family YMCA is dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility,” said Courtney Whitaker, Branch Executive. “This generous support from JCPenney Afterschool strengthens our efforts by giving parents of North Seattle peace of mind, and their children a place to learn, grow and thrive.”

JCPenney Afterschool has supported YMCA afterschool programming since 1999. In addition to awarding afterschool access grants, JCPenney Afterschool has implemented Round-Up fundraising events and a JCPcares social media campaign to raise awareness and resources in support of afterschool programs in every JCPenney community.

Dale Turner Family YMCA Offers A Preschool Basketball League

Saturday, November 13, 2010

And they already know how to dribble...

Games and kids go together like peanut butter and jelly. Games like basketball that involve movement, memorization, anticipation and teamwork can help growing children mature both mentally and physically.

That is why the Dale Turner Family YMCA is offering a basketball league for preschoolers ages 3 to 5 years old because the Y understands it is never too early to begin building the foundations for a successful and healthy life.

Youth sports give children the opportunity to learn about working in groups and relying on others. Children can apply communication skills that are practiced during a youth basketball game to many other social environments they experience throughout their lives.

The Preschool Basketball League at Dale Turner Family YMCA focuses on positive attitudes, teamwork and fun. Registration is open now for the Preschool League serving the north Seattle community.

For more information about Preschool Basketball or other inquiries about the Y please contact Dale Turner Family YMCA at 206.363.0446 or search online.

Rotary Room Dedication at the Dale Turner Family YMCA

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

By Courtney Laguio
Dale Turner Family YMCA

The result of a successful community partnership was celebrated with a special ceremony on March 3, 2010, as Rotarians from the Shoreline Rotary Breakfast Club dedicated the “Rotary Room “at the Dale Turner Family YMCA.

"The members of the Shoreline Breakfast Rotary Club have consistently supported the positive leadership and academic development of the youth of our area. We share the Dale Turner Family YMCA’s vision of a community where the young can reach their fullest potential in spirit, mind and body. In dedicating the Shoreline Breakfast Rotary Club Room at this magnificent facility, we are proud to provide this lasting, tangible symbol of our support for the YMCA,” said Julie Underwood, Rotary President.

L-R Anita Smith, Will Hall, Bob Ferguson, Courtney Whitaker, Julie Underwood

The Dale Turner Family YMCA opened in October 2008, after completing an aggressive $5.2 million fundraising campaign, and serves more than 12,000 youth annually through its various programs. The YMCA also raises money each year to provide scholarship support to ensure that all youth are able to participate in YMCA programs regardless of ability to pay.

“The Shoreline Breakfast Rotary Club wanted to create a lasting legacy in the facility to showcase their support for youth and set about establishing a challenge opportunity which resulted in the naming of the room,” said Courtney Whitaker, Executive Director of the Dale Turner Family YMCA.

More than $100,000 was raised through the challenge gift, individual contributions from Rotarians, and a topping off match from Rotary International. The Rotary Room features a large screen monitor and other presentation equipment that community groups and non-profits can use free of charge. YMCA programs for youth and teens also use the space for leadership clubs and afterschool programs.

“The Rotary has always been supportive of the YMCA through volunteer activities, but this showing of support really set an example of what is possible when everyone works together to achieve a common goal. We are proud to provide permanent recognition of the Shoreline Breakfast Rotary Club’s support in our facility, said Whitaker.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united world-wide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The naming of the YMCA: Dale Turner's Legacy

The local branch of the YMCA serves a wide geographic area, so when the name was being chosen, the YMCA of Greater Seattle did not want to tie the branch's name to a particular city. Instead the Y was named the Dale Turner YMCA in honor of the late Rev. Dale Turner.

Rev. Turner was a Life Board member of the YMCA of Greater Seattle, minister at University Congregational Church, columnist for the Seattle Times and a resident of Lake Forest Park.
Rev. Turner was known for his commitment to service and the building of community through bringing people of all backgrounds together. He was an inspiration to many and therefore the YMCA honors his name and is proud to be part of his legacy.

Accepting Applications for YMCA Teen Leadership Institute & Youth Exchange to Japan

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Local teenagers have a chance to experience Japanese culture through the YMCA Teen Leadership Institute. Teens currently in grades 8-12 will travel to Kobe, Hiroshima and Kyoto this summer from July 22 - August 7, 2010. Applications are now being accepted through March 31 and group selection will take place in early April.

Participants learn important leadership skills, cultural sensitivity, history and language through home stays, visiting historical places and interacting with teens their own age. There are 14 spots available in the Annual YMCA Teen Leadership Institute, a 45–year-old international partnership between the YMCA of Greater Seattle and Kobe YMCA.

Michaella Rosner, a participant in last year’s Youth Exchange, feels that the experience was truly eye-opening. “Japan really made me understand how similar people are across cultures. You can hear all your life how much we all have in common, but it doesn't really sink in until you're high-fiving Japanese girls and talking about boys. It's also incredible how willing my host family was to accept me into their family. They begin their emails to me ‘Dear our daughter Michaella.’ I get homesick for Japan sometimes,” she says.
YMCA of Greater Seattle is part of the World Alliance of YMCAs in 122 countries. The Teen Leadership program is one of a number of international programs the Seattle YMCA is offering for teens, young adults and families.

The subsidized cost for the program (including pre-trip training, airfare, transportation, food, lodging and activities) is $2,750. Financial assistance is available to the extent possible for those in need.

Parents and applicants can join one of following information meetings to learn more about the trip:

  • Monday, March 21, 7 pm, Northshore Family YMCA, 11811 NE 195th St, Bothell, WA 98011
  • Tuesday, March 22, 7 pm, West Seattle High School Library, 3000 California Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98116
  • Thursday, March 25, 7 pm, Coal Creek Family YMCA, 13750 Newcastle Golf Club Road, Newcastle, WA 98059
About the YMCA of Greater Seattle: The YMCA of Greater Seattle is a charitable, non-profit organization serving King and south Snohomish counties since 1876. Reaching more than 140,700 people annually through 12 branches, two overnight camps and more than 200 program sites, the YMCA provides a wide range of programs and services in child care, youth development, education, foster care, family support, wellness and outdoor experiences.
