First the Stormrays took on Kamiak starting at 138 lbs.

The team headed into the second match of the double dual ready for another win. Again it was a match with lots of pins, most by Shorewood.

The match began with Rock Harris at 144 lbs. Harris and Sky Klein won with back to back pins. Then Getchell and SW traded pins with a win by Oli Dalan, Mak Kanzler, at 165 and 190.

Once the Stormrays got back to the lighter weights, it was four straight pins for SW. Freshmen Finn Greenleaf, Emiliano Olivera, and Melyk Valencia as well as Eli Jeppsen, a sophomore, helped to clinch the deal for the Stormrays.

The final win came as the match ended right back where the night started, with Masa Taura and another pin for the Stormrays.

Final score: Shorewood 54 Marysville Getchell 27.

The Shorewood Junior Varsity squad also had their own dual against Kamiak and came out on top as well.

Congrats to medalists: Finley Houck (1st at 120 lbs), Abigaele Chishungu (1st at 190 lbs), Libby Norton (2nd at 115 lbs), Izzy Crave (2nd 155 lbs), and Aly Fellores (3rd at 155 lbs).

Shorecrest wrestling season opens with a double dual meet

Saturday, December 2, 2023

Senior Team Captains Peter Grimm and Kaiju Fergerson
Story and photos by Sean Rhodes

The Shorecrest High School Highlanders kicked off their wrestling season November 30, 2023 with a double dual meet against the Everett Seagulls and the Cascade Bruins.

Still only two weeks into the season, about half of the Scots wrestling team was still not eligible for this contest.

However, the wrestlers who were able to compete proved highly capable.

The action started off nicely for the Scots at the 144lb weight class with junior Kenneth Adams out-muscling the Gulls' Jack Franklin for 3 team points.

However, from there it was a lopsided exchange, with Everett picking up 30 points in pins and 24 team points in uncontested forfeits.

The forfeit advantage for Everett included a medical forfeit when senior captain Kaiju Fergerson couldn't finish the 3rd round, despite a 10 point lead.

Despite some great performances by senior captain Peter Grimm (1st round pin), junior Carter Nichols (1st round pin), and sophomore Avi Wylen (3rd round pin) the team point advantage was too great to overcome for the Scots.

Kenneth Adams, Junior, out muscling the
Gulls' Jack Franklin for 3 team points
Final Score: Everett - 54, Shorecrest 27

144—Kenneth Adams Jr (SC) def. Jack Franklin (EVT) 6-2;

132—Robert Thorne (EVT) won by Injury default over Kaiju Fergerson (SC)
138—Avi Wylen (SC) pinned Darey Pestana (EVT) 3:14

Lath Salem, Freshman pinned his opponent
After getting a serving of humble pie from the Seagulls, the Scots woke up for their dual against Cascade.

They bumped a few of their junior varsity wrestlers up into the varsity slots to fill the gaps in the line up.

The last minute change proved valuable, with some newly minted wrestlers notching their first ever wins in a varsity match.

This included 126lb Freshman Laith Salem, who pinned his opponent with a double arm bar in the first round!

Another notable first time varsity win was by 157lb sophomore Oskar Bohne. Bohne is not only new to Shorecrest High School and the sport of wrestling, he is also new to the United States of America. He is a foreign exchange student from Germany living with another SCHS wrestler and his family this year. Welcome to America Oskar!

Carter Nichols, Junior
This time around, the Scots only gave up 3 forfeits and picked up 3 of our own.

They also picked up 24 team points in pins thanks to performances by Bohne, Grimm, Salem and Adams

Also contributing to the team point tally was 215lb Carter Nichols with a major decision (4 team points) against Cascades' Fedhi A-Mosawi.

Final Score: Shorecrest 46 - Cascade 33

150—Mario Toledo-Hernandez (C) won by forfeit;

Wrestling academic state champions
Story and photos by Clark Norton

Finley Houck and Abi Chishungu
It was an amazing weekend for the Shorewood Wrestling program at Mat Classic XXXIV. On Saturday morning the Stormray boys team was recognized as the Academic state champions with a team GPA of 3.6 (3.0 is a B average, 4.0 is straight As)

Later in the morning freshmen Finley Houck and Abi Chishungu made school history as the first girls ever to place in the state tournament.

Houck bounced back from two tough losses to finish with a dominating pin to claim 5th place in the 105 pound weight class.

Chishungu had to use every ounce of grit and discipline she had to outlast her final opponent for a razor thin 2-1 victory and a 7th place medal.

Saturday evening was capped off by Shorewood senior Hunter Tibodeau in the 220 pound title bout.

Tibodeau pinned three straight opponents to reach the championship match. In the finals he faced off against Chief Sealth’s Dayne Camacho.

Hunter Tibodeau celebrates his state championship
Tibodeau took complete control of the match, dictating the tempo and shutting down Camacho’s usually dynamic offense, as he won 7-0.

The win was the 101st of Tibodeau’s illustrious career and makes him just the third champion in Shorewood history, following Tim Hester in 2008 and Matthew Floresca in 2014.

A dominant Shorewood girls wrestling team crowned 3A/4A Region 1 Champions - and on to State

Thursday, February 16, 2023

Shorewood girls wrestling team and coaches

By Clark Norton

The Shorewood Girls Wrestling team had a huge day on Saturday, February 11, 2023 in the 3A/4A Region 1 tournament. The Stormrays brought ten competitors to the event, hosted by Snohomish High School, and faced off against wrestlers from 35 other schools.

The team wrestled strong from the very beginning, with 9 of the 10 wrestlers advancing out of the first round into the quarterfinals. Of those nine quarterfinalists, four advanced to the semifinals and then the finals.

Those who lost in the quarters were not to be denied though. Shorewood wrestlers went 9-3 in consolation loser-out matches. Ultimately, senior Abby Tveit, senior Fiona Blair, and sophomore Izzy Crave were able to survive and advance to state. Sophomore Aly Fellores came up just short, but was still able to earn a spot as first alternate to state.

In the finals Shorewood's biggest and smallest wrestlers made the team proud. At 170 pounds senior Kiana Yoshimura faced off against freshman teammate Abbi Chishungu. Chishungu was able to score the first takedown, but Yoshimura quickly turned the tide and pinned her in just 23 seconds to earn a Regional title.

In the lightweights Shorewood had back-to-back finalists in sophomore Libby Norton at 100 pounds and freshman Finley Houck at 105. Norton was completely dominant over Arlington’s Araxi Cruz, ranked 3rd in the state. Norton built a 7-1 advantage, repeatedly smashing Cruz into the mat, before getting the pin in the second period.

Finley Houck faced off against Kamiak’s Rebecca Serati, ranked #5 in the state. This match came after Houck had to rally from a 2-0 deficit for a hard fought 3-2 victory over Lake Stevens’ Kamryn Mason, ranked #6, in the semifinals. The Stormray freshman was able to secure an early takedown and control the flow of the match as she won 7-2.

With three champions, four other state qualifiers, one state alternate, and two other wrestlers that won at least one match each, the Shorewood team was able to best all 35 other schools and be crowned the 3A/4A Region 1 Champions. On to State!!

Over the water and through the peninsula the Shorewood boys went on Saturday to wrestle in the Keigen Langholff Memorial Tournament at Klahowya Secondary School. Located in Silverdale, on the Kitsap Peninsula, this was the first time Shorewood has ever competed in this event.

Despite only taking a skeleton crew of eight wrestlers, the Stormrays made an impression on the contest. Freshman Eli Jeppsen rebounded from a tough loss in the 106 pound semifinals to pin his next two opponents in 29 seconds each to bring home a 3rd place medal.

At 126 pounds it was sophomore Masa Taura bringing home hardware. Taura pinned each of his opponents as he took 1st place, the first tournament championship of his wrestling career.

Junior Mak Kanzler improved his winning streak to eight in a row. Unfortunately, he ran into Klahowya’s Logan Wallis, ranked #2 in the state for 1A 160 pounds. Although he lost in the finals, Kanzler made his team proud by earning 2nd place.

Senior Hunter Tibodeau added one final regular season accolade to his stellar career by dominating his way to a 1st place finish. This Tibodeau’s tenth tournament title as he hopes to prove his #1 ranking at 220 pounds this postseason and bring home a state title.

Shorewood starts their postseason quest next Saturday, February 4th, in the WESCO South Tournament, hosted by Shorecrest High School.

The Shorewood girls wrestling team went north on Saturday to Mariner High School on Saturday to compete in the Lady Knights Tournament. With a squad of nine girls against a field of 27 other teams, the Stormrays showed up large and brought home a 2nd place team trophy.

Libby Norton, 2nd Place
At 100 pounds, sophomore Libby Norton punched her ticket to the finals by pinning Lindbergh’s Purnima Gurung.

It was a bit of revenge for Norton as Gurung had defeated her twice during the postseason last year.

Nicknamed “Mighty Mouse” by her teammates, Norton brought home a 2nd place medal.

Finley Houck, 2nd Place
At 105 pounds, freshman Finley Houck also made a run to the finals.

Houck fell to Burlington-Edison’s Lilia Ortiz in a rematch of the Everett Tournament finals.

Along with a 2nd place finish, Houck improved to 22-4 and set a Shorewood Girls single season record for wins.

Fiona Blair, 3rd Place
Senior Fiona Blair represented Shorewood in the 115 pound weight class.

Blair was upset in the quarterfinals by a wrestler from Mountlake Terrace.

The Stormray captain showed true resilience by winning four straight loser-out matches to climb all the way back to a 3rd place finish.

Abby Tveit
The fourth wrestler to place for the Stormrays was senior Abby Tveit

Tveit pinned her first opponent in just 19 seconds, the fastest Shorewood pin of the day.

Another pin in the semifinals, her fourteen of the season, put her into the finals.

After nearly tossing her opponent to her back, Tveit was reversed and pinned herself as she also earned 2nd place.

Aly Fellores, 4th Place
Sophomore Aly Fellores continued Shorewood’s parade of medals in the 140 pound weight class as she took 4th place.

Shorewood’s fourth finalist was sophomore Izzy Crave at 145 pounds.

Crave fell behind early against a tough competitor from Snohomish.

After weathering the storm, it was all Stormray for the final two periods.

Izzy Crave, 1st Place!!!!
Crave turned her opponent in the second period and nearly had the pin as time expired.

In the third period she kept up the downpour of pressure and finished things with a pin.

The 1st place finish was Crave’s first ever tournament championship.

Abbi Chishungu, 2nd Place
Rounding things out for Shorewood was sophomore Abbi Chishungu at 170 pounds.

Chishungu went to sudden death overtime in her semifinal match before getting a takedown and earning a spot in the finals with an 11-9 win.

Although her loss in the finals wasn’t what she wanted, she wrestled tough and held her head high.

Shorewood begins the three week postseason by wrestling in the two-day Sub-Regional tournament February 3rd and 4th at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Boys wrestling 1-27-23 Cross-town battle for the Spartan Cup

By Clark Norton

It was the battle for the Spartan Cup Friday night, January 27, 2023 as the Shorewood boys hosted cross-town rivals Shorecrest. Shorecrest won the trophy last season and the Stormrays were hungry to have it back.

Shorewood built an early lead with the help of their upper weights. Seniors Hunter Tibodeau and Milan Johnson delivered another pair of first round pins in the 220 and 285 pound bouts to stake their team to an 18-6 advantage.

After Shorecrest received a forfeit at 113 pounds Shorewood responded with a pin by junior Owen Mulder at 120. The Highlanders got another forfeit at 126 pounds, and again Shorewood responded with a pin. This time it was sophomore Masa Taura who built a 7 to 0 lead before pinning his opponent and giving Shorewood a 30-18 lead.

The visiting Highlanders then went on a run of their own. With pins at 138 and 145 pounds the Scots were able to tie up the match at 30 to 30 with just three bouts remaining. At 152 pounds Shorecrest’s Peter Grimm survived an early attack from Shorewood’s Isaac Van Horn, bridging from his own back for a reversal and near fall to grab a 5-0 lead after the first period. In the second and third rounds Grimm was able to control the action and shut down Van Horn on his way to an 8-0 victory that gave Shorecrest their first lead of the night.

With just two matches left Shorewood had zero margin for error. At 160 pounds Junior Mak Kanzler answered the call and methodically dominated his opponent for a 7 to 0 win. It was Kanzler’s sixth win in a row and ninth out of his last ten matches as he appears to be peaking just at the right time.

With Shorecrest clinging to a 34 to 33 lead, the final bout was between Stormray Nathaniel Hernandez and Scot senior captain Max Rutledge. Despite a valiant effort, fighting off of his back multiple times, Hernandez was unable to withstand the constant pressure from Rutledge. Rutledge scored a decisive victory to give the visitors a final margin of victory of 39 to 33 and one more year of ownership over the Spartan Cup.

The Shorewood girls wrestling team competed in the first ever WESCO Girls Dual Championship Thursday night hosted by Edmonds-Woodway High School.

All the girls teams from WESCO 3A and 4A, North and South, were there competing for respective league titles.

In their first dual meet of the night the Stormrays faced a combined team from Shorecrest and Cedarcrest.

Bouts began at 145 pounds with Shorewood wrestler Izzy Crave taking on Shorecrest’s Safiya King. Crave was aggressive for the whistle and pinned her opponent in the first period.

By the time the 110 pound match came around Shorewood had stretched its team lead to 18-6 thanks to a couple of forfeits. Shorewood sent out freshman Finley Houck against undefeated Shorecrest senior Ana Reed. Houck countered a big throw attempt by Reed to score the first takedown. Using her quickness and tough riding skills Houck was able to build a 7-0 lead before pinning Reed in the 3rd period.

Shorecrest/Cedarcrest was able to keep it respectable, but they could never catch the Stormrays as Shorewood led the entire match for a 41-24 victory.

In the second dual meet of the night Shorewood had a rematch with Edmonds-Woodway, this time with a league title on the line.

After a forfeit to open things, Shorewood sophomore Libby Norton wrestled the first match of the dual against Ny Ny Pendleton. A quick attack from Pendleton caught Norton off guard, but she managed to avoid giving up the takedown. With a jolt the Stormray fired off her own attack and overpowered Pendleton for a takedown and pin. Norton was followed in the next match by Houck, who also pinned her opponent to give Shorewood an 18-0 lead in the team score.

The home team Warriors rallied with a pair of pins sandwiched around a pair of forfeits to take their first lead of the night at 24-18. Shorewood’s Abby Tveit received a forfeit at 125 pounds to tie the score up with just three matches to go.

At 140 pounds Shorewood’s Aly Fellores got the first takedown, but couldn’t hold on to the lead and got pinned in the second period. Izzy Crave kept her team alive in the 145 pound match by pinning her opponent in the first period to tie the team score 30 to 30 with only one weight left.

Stormray Cora Morgan made her varsity debut and was unable to stop Edway’s Jael Whitacre as the Warriors claimed a close 36-30 win and the inaugural WESCO South Girls league title.

Shorewood boys wrestling 1-24-2023

Thursday, January 26, 2023

By Clark Norton

It was a hard fought battle between longtime foes on Tuesday night as the Shorewood Stormrays visited the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors.

The match began at 160 pounds with Shorewood’s Mak Kanzler. Kanzler brought the aggression and built an 11-2 lead before getting the pin and giving his team the opening lead. The Warriors answer in the 170 pound match with a pin of their own in the third period to tie the score.

At 182 pounds senior captain Alberto Solano wasted no time as he launched his opponent straight from his feet to his back for a lightning quick pin in just 26 seconds. The 195 pound match featured a pair of seniors in Shorewoods Matt Burns and Edway’s Reed Burmaster. Neither wrestler had any answers as the two battled to a scoreless draw after the first period. In the second round Burmaster was able to reverse Burns and get the pin to again tie the team score, 12-12.

As they have all season, Shorewood’s big boys came up large. Hunter Tibodeau and Milan Johnson each pinned their opponent in less than a minute to put the Stormrays back in front. The two of them have now combined for forty-three wins and thirty pins on the season.

Edmonds-Woodway was able to rally and took their first team lead after getting a forfeit and two pins in the next three weights. It was sophomore Masa Taura who pulled the teams back to even with a huge pin in the 126 pound bout. The home team scored a pair of 2nd round pins in the 132 and 138 pound matches, leaving Shorewood facing a 12 point deficit with just two weights to go.

At 145 pounds junior Quissett Sachs came out blazing. He took down his Warrior opponent, Sam Schimpf, and held him millimeters from a pin for most of the first period for a 5-0 lead. The 2nd period was all Edmonds as Schimpf dominated to take a 7-5 lead into the final round. Schimpf was able to finally subdue Sachs with only 13 seconds left in the bout to give Edmonds-Woodway an insurmountable 48-30 team lead.

Although the final team outcome had already been decided, the match of the night was the 152 pound bout.

Shorewood senior captain Isaac Van Horn faced off against Edmonds-Woodway senior captain Liam Fitting. Both wrestlers made it to the state tournament last season and are looking for a medal this year.

Fitting took advantage of a Van Horn mistake to get the first takedown. Van Horn quickly escaped and scored a takedown of his own before the first period ended for a 3-2 lead after one. In the second period Van Horn started on bottom and was able to get another escape, but Fitting got another takedown to even the score at 4-4 going into the final period. The Warrior captain started on bottom and retook the lead early in the 3rd with a reversal.

Van Horn was able to get his third escape of the match with about one minute left to trail 6-5. Neither wrestler was able to score by the time they went out of bounds with just 11 seconds left in the match. On the restart Van Horn gave one last valiant effort and finally broke through Fitting defense to get a takedown and hold on for dear life for the three seconds.

While Edmonds-Woodway got the win, and held on to their crown as WESCO South Champions, Shorewood held their heads high and can look forward to seeing their rivals again in the postseason.

Wrestling: Shorewood vs Lynnwood Friday night

Saturday, January 21, 2023

By Clark Norton

Shorewood visited Lynnwood High School on Friday night for a tough match against the home Royals

The first bout of the evening set the tone for the entire contest. Shorewood freshman Paddy Andresen stepped out under the lights and battled back and forth with his opponent. Clinging to a two point lead, Andresen gave up a reversal with seconds left in the third period to force sudden death overtime. It was the Royal wrestler who struck first as the home team snatched away a victory.

Andresen’s valiant effort was followed up by junior Mak Kanzler in the 170 match. Kanzler came out on fire and bullied his way to an 11-1 lead early in the 3rd. Kanzler, who attends King’s High School, but wrestles for Shorewood because King’s does not have a team, never took his foot off the gas and was able to finally pin his opponent and give Shorewood the lead.

The pin at 170 pounds was the first in a string of five straight pins by the Stormrays as they built a 30-3 lead in the team score.

Lynnwood would not go easily though, as senior Phillipe Ban faced off against Shorewood freshman Eli Jeppsen in the 106 pound match. Jeppsen could not get anything to work, nearly scoring time after time only to find himself with a 6-1 deficit at the end of the 2nd period. With pure determination Jeppsen began a furious comeback and was holding Ban’s shoulders barely off the mat as time expired to force overtime with the score tied 9-9. In the extra period Jeppsen blocked Ban’s leg attack and spun around behind as the referee awarded him a two point takedown, only to see one last gasp of explosion from Ban, reversing the move as the ref changed his own call and gave the win to the home wrestler.

Three more wins in a row by Lynnwood narrowed Shorewood’s team lead to just 30-23 with four weight classes left. A pair of sophomores put Shorewood back in charge in the 132 and 138 pound match ups. First it was Masa Taura, using a quick takedown to pin his opponent in just 49 seconds. Then it was James Nottingham, grinding his way to a methodical 7-0 win. Those two wins gave Shorewood an insurmountable team lead on their way to a gutsy 45-29 victory.
