Shorewood wrestling vs Cedarcrest in Duvall 1-18-23

Thursday, January 19, 2023

By Clark Norton

It was a solid win for the Stormrays on Wednesday night as they went north to Duvall and defeated the Red Wolves of Cedarcrest.

The match began at 170 pounds with Shorewood’s Nathaniel Hernandez receiving a forfeit. At 182 pounds senior Alberto Solano grabbed a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period. In the second period, Solano quickly took his opponent down and turned him to his back for a pin. Another forfeit by Cedarcrest at 195 pounds gave Shorewood an 18-0 lead in the team score.

The top of the line-up continued to be solid anchors for Shorewood as Hunter Tibodeau racked up his team-leading 17th victory with a pin at 220 pounds and heavyweight Milan Johnson followed right after with his own pin to earn his 16th victory of the season. The two pins extended Shorewood’s lead to 30-0

The Red Wolves did not give up and tried to rally in the lower weights. At 106 pounds, Stormray Eli Jeppsen took charge early before making a misstep in the second period and giving up a pin that got Cedarcrest on the board. Even with four more wins over the next six weights, it was not enough for Shorewood to be stopped.

Senior Isaac Van Horn and junior Mak Kanzler put the finishing touches on the night in the 152 and 160 matches. Each wrestler initiated the action and dominated their way to a first round pin to complete a 54 to 25 win for the Stormrays.

Wrestling results 1-18-23 Shorecrest vs Edmonds-Woodway

Peter Grimm
By Sean Rhodes

The Shorecrest High School Highlanders hosted the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors Wednesday night in a late season dual meet.

Both teams are in a rebuilding phase after graduating two state finalist team captains last year. Although the Warriors are an extremely well supported program and have been the uncontested Wesco South Championship team for more than two decades, the Highlander coaches hoped to sneak up on the Warriors tonight with a few of their more experienced middleweight wrestlers.

However, with two unexpected forfeits and some last minute weight changes, the Scots fell behind early on in the team point game and never fully caught up.

It started out a very competitive contest in the middle weight range with both teams trading pins. SC's Peter Grimm (152lb junior) pinned EW's Sergio Lopez in the first round, giving the Highlander crowd something to cheer about. However, the next bout went to the Warriors' senior captain at 160lb (Liam Fitting) who ultimately pinned down Sophomore Shokan Conway-Yasuyama late in the third round despite a valiant effort by Yasuyama to resist that outcome.

The 170lb weight class looked like it might go in Shorecrest's direction in the first round, but SC's Max Rutledge (normally wrestling at 160lbs) started to tarry in the second round, and ran out of gas in the third, losing to EW's Yamada 6-3.

The defeat at the 170lb weight class loss cascaded into three more losses in a row for the Scots with a forfeit at 182lbs, a pin by the Warriors at 195lbs, and a pin by the Warriors at 220lbs.

However; SC's Evan Claar stopped the bleeding with a 40 second pin against EW's Belezaire in the heavyweight division, giving the Scots a reason to dream again. But unfortunately, the Warrior win machine revved up again with another Shorecrest forfeit at 113lbs, and another pin at 120lbs. But just when it looked like all was lost, SC's Kaiju Ferguson (126lb, Junior) got things going for the Scots again with a first round pin against EW's Dominic Hansen.

The most intense match of the night was Joseph Martinez (SCHS) vs Brian Ramirez (EWHS) at the 132lb contest. Both of these wrestlers are senior captains for their respective teams. Joseph (normally wrestling at 126lbs) was bumping up one weight class to accommodate a teammate. The match went point for point (take down for a take down, escape for an escape) and went into triple overtime before a final escape point was awarded to Ramirez, who won the match 6 to 5. With a point deficit of 30 points, the Warriors' lead was now insurmountable.

However, to finish the night out on a high note (and gain 12 more team points for the Scots), Avi Wylen (132lb freshman) pinned his opponent in 32 seconds; and Kenneth Adams (138lb sophomore) pinned his opponent in the second round. Both wrestlers had bumped up a weight class for those competitions.

The final score was 48 EWHS, 30 SCHS, which was the closest point spread any Shorecrest High School Wrestling team has earned against the Warriors in the previous two decades.

There were also some great Junior Varsity and Girls' wrestling contests tonight. Although not part of the official varsity team score, there were some noteworthy highlights:

JV Wrestler Milo Hamilton (freshman, 138lbs) earned his first win (by pin) tonight. The SCHS coaches believe Hamilton has a lot of raw talent and will be "a bear in the woods" in future years.

JV Wrestler Owen Watson (SCHS Junior) also earned his first pin in competition this evening.

SCHS Female Wrestler Ana Reed (Senior, 110lbs) won a tough three round exhibition match against a well seasoned EWHS girls' team leader tonight. Reed, although a "dark horse" among the highly ranked girls throughout the state, is someone to look for in the postseason. She has a lot of talent and is an intense competitor.

Final Score: Edmonds-Woodway 48 - Shorecrest 30

160—Liam Fitting (EW) pinned Shokan Conway-Yasuyama (SC) 5:12

Friday, January 13, 2023

The Shorewood boys got back on the winning track on Thursday night with a decisive victory over Archbishop Murphy.

Shorewood was led by a pair of early pins by senior captains Hunter Tibodeau and Milan Johnson in the 220 and 285 matches. Complementing the varsity mainstays were a pair of first time varsity wrestlers.

At 132 pounds sophomore Sky Klein joined the starting line-up and pinned his opponent in the first period.

Two bouts later it was junior Quissett Sachs with his first varsity pin in just 50 seconds.

The veteran leadership mixed with new energy helped the Stormrays run away with a 66 to 12 win.

Shorewood wrestles next this Saturday at Curtis High School in the Ragnarok Tournament.

Shorewood girls wrestling team December 2022

By Clark Norton

The Shorewood girls team wrestled Wednesday night in an event that was truly historic. It was the first ever dual meet hosted by the girls team as they welcomed in the Warriors of Edmonds-Woodway, the only other school in WESCO South with enough wrestlers to qualify for dual meets.

The bouts began at 145 pounds with Shorewood sophomore Izzy Crave, a second generation Shorewood wrestler, up first. Crave started cautiously before turning up the intensity and powering through her opponent for a first round pin. After freshman Abbu Chishungu also pinned her opponent in the first round at 170 pounds Shorewood held an early 12-0 lead in the team score.

The two teams traded forfeits at 100 and 105 pounds to get them to the 110 pound weight class. Freshman Finley Houck gave up a quick takedown to fall behind, but never lost her cool and her confidence. After retaking the lead with a reversal and nearfall, Houck put the match away with a pin in the second period for her team leading 15th win of the season.

Stormray senior captain Fiona Blair bumped up a weight class from 115 to 120 pounds with Shorewood looking to extend their team lead. For Blair and fellow senior co-captains Abby Tveit and Kiana Yoshimura this was not only their first home meet, but also their Senior Night. The trio make up the first ever senior class of wrestlers for Shorewood, with Tveit and Yoshimura the first two Stormray girls to ever wrestle all six years from 7th through 12th grade.

Amidst the fanfare it was not easy sledding for Blair. She could not get her offensive attacks going and trailed going into the 3rd period. Call it determination, competitive spirit, or maybe just plain anger, but Blair unleashed an avalanche in the 3rd as she out-scored her opponent 9-1 in the period for an 11-5 victory.

Two bouts later Abby Tveit put a stamp on the evening. Tveit took her opponent straight from her feet to her back for a pin in only 30 seconds. Thanks to the hard work of the whole team and the leadership of the senior captains, Shorewood rolled to a 39-21 victory and opened a new chapter in the history of wrestling in Shoreline.

The Shorewood boys wrestling team opened the second half of their season with a short trip north to visit the Meadowdale Mavericks.

It was a battle of tiny differences as both teams sent out line-ups with more underclassmen than upperclassmen.

The contest began at 113 pounds, and Meadowdale rallied from a 15-8 deficit to grab a pin and open the team scoring up 6-0. Meadowdale took each of the next two matches as well, thanks to timely pushes instead of pulls, right-steps instead of left, and dives instead of dips. The Stormrays stopped Meadowdale’s streak in the 132 pound match when sophomore Masa Taura rallied from a deficit of his own to take control and secure a second round pin.

After a Meadowdale pin at 138 pounds it was another sophomore from Shorewood that attempted to stop the tide. James Nottingham, bumping up a weight class, attacked from the onset and pinned his opponent in the first period. Nottingham was followed by senior Captain Isaac Van Horn. Van Horn, a four year starter, was completely dominant as he ran out to a 4-1 lead before getting a pin in barely a minute. With Van Horn’s win Shorewood closed the team score gap to 18 to 24.

Unfortunately, the next three bouts resorted to the form of the first three. In each match Shorewood gave absolute effort, but little retreats, small missteps, and tiny differences led to back-and-forth matches that each resulted in Meadowdale victories. By the time Shorewood’s three other senior captains scored the final 18 team points at 195, 220, and 285 pounds, it was just not quite enough as the Mavericks eked out a 39 to 36 victory.

Scots wrestlers sweep the competition in double dual at Kamiak HS

Wednesday, December 14, 2022

Shorecrest wrestling team
By Bryan Officer

The Shorecrest HS wrestling team had a strong showing against WESCO opponents Kamiak High School and Mariner High School.

The Scots were able to fill each of the 14 varsity weight classes, which proved to be a big advantage over the opponents who were set back by injuries, illness, and ineligible wrestlers.

Senior captains George Fernandez and Joseph Martinez each played a huge role in leading their team to victory. George F. picked up two quick pins in his first two matches of the season, while Joseph M. bumped up one weight class (130lbs wrestling up to 138lb class) and scored two hard fought victories over quality opponents.

The match of the night was at the 145lb weight class where Shorecrest sophomore Kenneth Adams prevailed 9-7 in a double overtime match over Mariner's Ken Larsen. Great job by both wrestlers.

Shorecrest's next match is a head-to-head dual against Lynnwood HS on 12/14/2022.

Shorewood Boys Wrestling 12/13/2022

It was a rough night for the Shorewood boys wrestling team as they faced off against Mariner and Kamiak high schools in a double dual. The bus showed up late, four varsity starters were out, and it didn’t get much better from there.

Despite a few clutch victories, such as heavyweight Aidan Careres getting a come from behind pin in the third period, Shorewood was never able to gain any momentum and lost both matches, 48-30 to Mariner and 54-24 to Kamiak.

Shorewood Girls Wrestling 12/10/22

Fiona Blair, Finley Houck, Kiana Yoshimura
The Shorewood Girls’ Wrestling team went to Everett on Saturday, December 10, 2022 to compete in the Everett Girls Championships tournament.

With almost 300 girls in the varsity brackets and another 100 plus in the junior varsity competitions, it was non-stop wrestling the entire day.

Eight different StormRays won at least one match and when all was said and done Shorewood had earned 10th place out of 54 teams.

Highlighting the day for Shorewood were a trio of top 3 placers. Seniors Fiona Blair at 120 pounds and Kiana Yoshimura at 190 pounds each made runs into the semifinals before suffering their first losses of the season and finishing in 3rd place. Shorewood’s other placer was freshman Finley Houck at 110 pounds.

Houck improved her perfect record to 7-0 by upsetting the #5 ranked wrestler in the state in the semis to make the finals. Her reward was the #3 ranked wrestler from Burlington-Edison high school.

Houck weathered an onslaught in the first period to trail just 4-2. In the second period she was dominant, grinding her opponent down and scoring 7 points while giving up zero. Houck continued the pressure in the final period and emerged with a tough 9-6 victory and a 1st place medal.

The win by Tibodeau, ranked #1 in 3A, was particularly impressive as he faced off against the Johnathan Gessert of Curtis, the top ranked wrestler in the 4A classification. Both wrestlers lost in the state finals last season and are on quests to grab a state title this year.

Tibodeau used an early takedown to seize the lead and controlled the entire match as he cruised to an 8-2 victory. With the win, Tibodeau improved his record to 8-0 on the season.
Milan Johnson took the #1 spot at 285 pounds and Isaac Van Horn placed 1st at 152 pounds. Both are senior captains on the Shorewood StormRays wrestling team.

Shorewood boys wrestle in dual with Stanwood

Thursday, December 8, 2022

Hunter Tibodeau at #1 and Milan Johnson at #3 in previous match.
Shorewood boys kicked off the dual meet season on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 by traveling north to wrestle the #2 ranked Stanwood Spartans.

The matches began at 160 pounds and Stanwood grabbed a quick 23 second pin. The home team would stretch their lead to 16-6 before Shorewood’s Hunter Tibodeau put his toe on the line at 220 pounds.

Touting a #1 ranking in the state, Tibodeau had to grind out a tough decision, the first time this year he has not pinned his opponent. Following Tibodeau was fellow senior captain Milan Johnson at heavyweight.

Johnson brought immediate pressure on his opponent and overwhelmed him for a first round pin that narrowed Shorewood’s deficit to one point in the team score.

Stanwood’s lightweights responded resoundingly as they swept the next four matches. StormRay Masa Taura got his first win of the season with a pin at 132 pounds to keep Shorewood. However, the Spartans held true to their high ranking and won the final three bouts on their way to a 55-21 victory.

It was the dawning of a new era on Tuesday night as the Shorewood girls wrestling team had their first dual meet, not just of the season, but ever. For their inaugural meet the StormRays faced off against the Spartans of Stanwood High School.

It was also the first ever dual meet for the Stanwood girls team. This is the first year both schools have passed the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (WIAA) minimum requirement of eight wrestlers for a dual meet team.

Shorewood senior captain Abby Tveit, who started wrestling on the Einstein boys team in 7th grade, was first up at 140 pounds. The match went back and forth and was tied 9-9 with 30 seconds left in the final period before Stanwood secured a pin with 14 seconds left.

StormRay Aly Fellores came out at 145 pounds and it was another barnburner. Fellores used two first period takedowns to build a lead as she controlled the bout on her way to a third period pin to tie the team score at 6-6. Shorewood’s first lead came courtesy of a second round pin by sophomore Izzy Crave in the 155 pound matchup.

A decision, a pin, and a forfeit stretched the StormRays’ lead to 27-6. Freshman Finley Houck went out in the 110 pound bout and dominated her way to a first round pin to lock in the team victory.

The intensity was not over though. In the 120 pound match senior captain Fiona Blair took a 5-2 lead into the third period, but could not hold on as penalties tied it up and forced overtime.

Each of the first two overtime periods was scoreless, bringing up a sudden death 20 second final overtime. Blair scored an escape with moments to spare for a hard fought 7-6 win as Shorewood went on for a 42-12 team victory.

A full Saturday for the Shorewood boys and girls wrestling teams 12-3-22

Monday, December 5, 2022

Hunter Tibodeau took 1st and Milan Johnson 3rd at the Edmonds Invite
Article and photos by Clark Norton

It was a full Saturday for the Shorewood boys and girls wrestling teams as they had their first contests of the season. While most of the wrestlers went to the Return of the Seahawk Tournament at Chief Sealth, a small group of boys went to the Edmonds Invite.

The Edmonds Invite is considered one of toughest tournaments in the state with over a dozen returning state champions across the weight classes. Shorewood sent five wrestlers to the event and came away two medals and a 13th place team score (out of 29 teams).

Highlighting the skeleton crew was the StormRays’ Hunter Tibodeau taking first place at 220 pounds and Milan Johnson taking 3rd place in the 285 pound class.

Chief Sealth High School event
Down at Chief Sealth High School twenty-seven Shorewood wrestlers also kicked off their seasons. For thirteen of these wrestlers it was their first ever high school matches. While the boys scraped their way to a 17th place team finish without their heavy hitters, the girls brought the hammer.

Shorewood girls place 2nd out of 19 teams
With only 8 girls the Stormrays racked up twenty-three victories by pin and placed 2nd out of nineteen teams with six individual top 3 finishers. Finley Houck, Fiona Blair, and Kiana Yoshimura each brought home first place medals.

Shorecrest wrestling team 2022

By Sean Rhodes

Thomas Rhodes, Champion 145lbs

Congratulations to the Highlanders heading off to the Tacoma Dome for the State Championships next weekend!

Joseph Martinez, 5th, 120lbs
Four Scot wrestlers punched their ticket to state Monday at the 3A region 3 tournament at Foss HS in Tacoma:

  • George Fernandez (Junior) - 113lbs - 4th place
  • Joseph Martinez (Junior) - 120lbs - 5th place
  • Thomas Rhodes (Senior) - 145lbs - Champion
  • Peter Grimm (Sophomore) - 160lbs - 5th place

George Fernandez, 4th 113lbs

The “fire in the belly” award at the 3A Region 3 tournament in Tacoma on Saturday goes to George Fernandez.

George qualified for regionals last week at 3rd place in the district tournament and didn’t have a great seed starting out. He lost his second match, which put him in the consolation bracket. Undeterred, George fought his way through five back to back matches against highly ranked opponents (winning one match in overtime) and qualified for state at 4th place!

It was a great day for both Shorewood's Boys and Girls wrestling teams on Saturday, February 12, 2022.

Kiana Yoshimura, 5th place 190lbs

While the boys were competing at the 3A Region 3 tournament at Foss High School in Tacoma, the girls competed in the Girls Region 1 tournament at Sedro-Woolley High School.

Abby Tveit, 6th place 120lbs

The girls team took three regional qualifiers and got a bonus when 120lb alternate Abby Tveit got into the event due to a girl from Arlington not being able to participate. Tveit was the first Stormray to actually wrestle and tossed her opponent straight from her feet to her back for a pin in just 26 seconds.

Fiona Blair, 5th Place 110lbs

The rest of the tournament was far more nerve-racking as all four girls lost in the quarterfinals, sending them into the loser-goes-home consolation brackets. In an awesome show of grit, determination, and will to survive, the team went a combined nine and one (9-1!!!) in must-win matches.

Libby Norton, 5th Place 110lbs

100lb Freshman Libby Norton, 110lb Junior Fiona Blair, and 190lb Junior Kiana Yoshimura all punched through to the Mat Classic with 5th place finishes, while 120lb Junior Abby Tveit came up just short and placed 6th to be an alternate to state.

This is the first time Shorewood has ever sent more than one girl to the state tournament. As a team the group placed 17th out of the 48 schools in the tournament.

While the girls were giving their all at Sedro the boys were one hundred miles south at Foss High School. Although not as anxiety-producing as the girls, the boys showed an immense amount of heart and determination.

Quincy Laflin, 4th Place 126lbs

Senior Quincy Laflin recovered from a heart-breaking one point loss in the semifinals to rally and take fourth place at 126lbs.

Isaac VanHorn, 5th place 145lbs

Junior Isaac VanHorn also lost in the semifinals, and then lost again in the consolation semifinals to put himself into a winner-to-state match for 5th place where he pulled out a huge second round pin to earn his ticket to state.

Milan Johnson, 3rd Place 285lbs

Junior Milan Johnson was the surprise of the weekend as he upset three different wrestlers seeded higher than him. In his final match he faced a Bonney Lake wrestler who had pinned him in the first round just three weeks ago. Johnson got a takedown in sudden death overtime to avenge the loss and take 3rd place.

Hunter Tibodeau, 1st Place 195lbs

The final Shorewood wrestler of the day was Hunter Tibodeau at 195 pounds. When Tibodeau stepped on the mat for his final match at 8pm it was ten hours after the tournament had begun. It was an exclamation point of a match as Tibodeau dominated from start to finish, improving his season record to 22-1, and claiming his first Regional Championship with an 8-1 victory.

Isaac VanHorn, Hunter Tibodeau, Quincy Laflin and Milan Johnson

Both teams wrestle next this Friday and Saturday in Mat Classic XXXIII at the Tacoma Dome.Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 10am on both days.

The girls' sub-regional tournament encompassed a larger district and allowed the top five finishers to move into regionals with the sixth place finisher allowed to travel with their team as an alternate.
