Bragging rights for Highlanders after cross-town wrestling match Friday

Saturday, January 29, 2022

By Clark Norton

It was a classic rivalry Friday night, January 28, 2022 as the Shorewood Stormrays hosted the Shorecrest Highlanders in their final contest of the regular season. Shorewood was looking to continue their winning streak in the series, having won the past two meetings and eleven of the past twelve.

Wrestling began at 126 pounds when Shorewood Senior captain Quincy Laflin dropped a weight class to face Shorecrest’s Joseph Martinez. Although Martinez was the favorite on paper, currently ranked ninth in the state, Laflin took over the match. Laflin took Martinez down early and often as he steamrolled his way to a dominating 12-3 victory.

Next up, at 132 pounds, was a battle of freshmen between Stormray Masa Taura and Highlander August King. Taura took advantage of a small mistake by King to grab the pin and give Shorewood an early 10-0 lead in the team score.

At 138 pounds Highlander Jacob Lougee got his team right back into the match as he solved the puzzle of James Nottingham for a second round pin.

Senior Thomas Rhodes, ranked #2 in the state at 145 pounds, continued his personal streak of never having lost to a Shorewood wrestler as he methodically man-handled his opponent for a first round pin, giving Shorecrest their first lead of the night at 12-10.

Shorewood sent out their own top-notch wrestler, 6th ranked Isaac VanHorn, at 152 pounds. It took a bit for VanHorn to figure out his opponent, but once he did there was no stopping him. VanHorn’s first round pin pulled the Stormrays back into the lead. The Shorewood lead disappeared almost instantly though when Highlander Max Rutledge snatched it away with a pin at 160 pounds.

After a win at 170 pounds the visiting team held a narrow 24-16 lead with half the weight classes to go.  Shorecrest coach Bryan Officer made a last minute substitution at 182 pounds, inserting sophomore Malachi Stream into the varsity line-up. Stream took full advantage of his opportunity, taking an 8 to 3 lead over Shorewood’s Nathaniel Hernandez into the third period. Starting in the bottom position, Stream was able to get a huge reversal and pin that brought the Shorecrest fans to their feet.

#1 ranked wrestler Hunter Tibodeau scored his fourteenth pin of the season, in just seventeen matches, to keep Shorewood alive. Stormray teammates RJ Buchheit and Milan Johnson got pins of their own at 220 and 285 pounds to pull Shorewood back into the lead at 34-30.

However, it was too little, too late for Shorewood. The Highlanders received two forfeits around a pin by Kaiju Fergerson at 113 pounds to sweep the final three weights and go home with a 48-34 victory and cross-town bragging rights.

Shorecrest wrestling had a good dual meet against Meadowdale

Thursday, January 27, 2022

Senior Beau Ormsby stands with his family after receiving his “senior night”’award. Ormsby stayed on to help manage the team this year despite a season-ending acl injury.

Story and photos by Sean Rhodes

Shorecrest Wrestling had a good dual meet against Meadowdale HS on Wednesday evening, January 26, 2022.

It was "senior night" and SCHS was honoring their senior wrestlers (Beau Ormsby, Thomas Rhodes and Jacob Lougee). All three of these seniors have wrestled for Shorecrest High School for the last four years.

  • Ormsby plans to play football in college, but has some recovery time ahead of him with an ACL injury.
  • Rhodes has recently committed to wrestling for the US Coast Guard Academy.
  • Lougee plans to enter the US Navy after graduation and become a corpsman.

After opening ceremonies, the "tit for tat" action started out at the 170lb weight class with Peter Grimm (SC Sophomore) vs Jackson Zollars (Meadowdale). Grimm quickly got the pin to put up 6 team points on the scoreboard.

However, the Mavericks returned the favor at the 182lb contest, where Meadowdale's Bolar Sodnomayer pinned Shorecrest's Devin Montague.

There was a notable match at the 195lb division between Shorecrest's Evan Claar and Meadowdale's Saul Hernandez (ranked 8th in division 3A in WA state). Evan is only a 3rd year wrestler (and missed most of last year due to Covid cancellations) and Saul is a senior who has been wrestling since Kindergarten. Nonetheless, Claar was able to take Hernandez down in the first round and almost got him into a cradle before Hernandez got the reversal and ended the match.

The 195, 220 and 285 (heavyweight contests) all went to Meadowdale. However, before SCHS' Jesse Gigrich lost his match, he almost locked down a head and arm throw on Joseph Williams of Meadowdale - prior to going out of bounds.

The Scots got a forfeit at the 106lb class, but received a loss at the 113lb class, where Hilmy Burch took down Kaiju Fergerson.

At 120lbs, the Scots' George Fernandez came out blazing, firing off a takedown and locking up a first round pin against Maddox Milikan.

Joseph Martinez picked up another 6 points for the Scots at the 126lb contest and August King picked up 6 more in a Meadowdale forfeit at 132lbs.

The Mav’s took the lead again at 138lbs when the Scots’ Kenneth Adams gave up a tech fall (5 team points) to Skyler Rivera. However, Scots got a rebound when Thomas Rhodes, the Scot's team captain, secured a pin in the 2nd round against Daniel Sok at 152lbs for another 6 points in the home team’s favor.

Things got dicey again at 160lbs, when Max Rutledge lost 3 team points in a major decision to the Mav's Henry Gates.

But at the 145lb division, Jacob Lougee won a tough match against Skyler Rivera by locking up a pin in the third round to secure the Scot's team win with a final score of 42 for the Scots and 38 for the Mavericks.

  • Bill McFerran - 2nd Team Captain after Tom. 154lbs
  • Denny Lawson - Competed at 133lbs and 145lbs
  • John Chambers - Earned the "Most Inspirational Wrestler" award his senior year and wrestled at the 112lb weight class.

These dedicated men have been showing up in support of Shorecrest Wrestling at SCHS home dual meets for 58 years.

A rough night for Shorewood wrestling Wednesday against Edmonds-Woodway

By Clark Norton

It was a rough night for the Shorewood wrestling team on Wednesday as they hosted the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors.

Shorewood was definitely undermanned as they attempted to deny Edmonds-Woodway their 8th straight league title, and eleventh in thirteen years.

After giving up a forfeit at 106 pounds the Stormrays sent out Owen Mulder at 113. Mulder bullied his opponent the entire match, but couldn’t quite get the pin in a dominant 14 to 0 win.

Edmonds-Woodway received two more forfeits at 120 and 126 pounds before Shorewood captain Quincy Laflin came up at 138. Laflin wasted little time as he attacked from the opening whistle and pinned his opponent in just 40 seconds.

However, there would be no upset on this night. Edmonds-Woodway ran off four straight wins, sandwiched around another pair of forfeits, to put the contest out of reach, cruising to a comfortable 59-13 win.

Shorewood wrestles their final regular season match this Friday, January 28th, at home against cross-town rivals Shorecrest. Wrestling begins at 7pm.

The freshmen of the Shorewood StormRays sparked the wrestling match with Meadowdale Thursday night

Friday, January 21, 2022

By Clark Norton

Shorewood went on the road Thursday night to to face the Mavericks of Meadowdale High School. It was Senior Night for Meadowdale with parents and fans supporting the nine graduating wrestlers in Meadowdale's varsity line-up. Yet, it was the freshmen of Shorewood who rose up and sparked their team.

It the opening bout of the night Shorewood freshman Sky Klein took to the mat at 120 pounds. Klein was immediately on the defensive, giving up an early takedown and fighting off everything he could while falling behind 6-0 midway through the second period.

Then, as Klein said, “I’m not sure what I did, but it worked.”  Klein was able to reverse his opponent to his back for a pin with just seconds remaining in the round. It was Klein’s first varsity win of the season and Shorewood grabbed a 6-0 lead in the team score.

Following Klein was another freshman for Shorewood, Masa Taura. Taura also fell behind big, trailing 8-1 early in the second. However, Taura kept going, relentlessly attacking his opponent. As the Meadowdale wrestler began to falter, the StormRay never stopped. Taura took his tired challenger down and punished him for a pin that extended the Shorewood team lead to 12-0.

Coach Derek Norton made the strategic move at 132 pounds to give up a forfeit, and the free six team points, to move up his Senior captain Quincy Laflin to 138 pounds, where Meadowdale was set to receive a forfeit and six team points of their own. Laflin rewarded his coach’s faith in him as he dominated from start to finish, building a large lead before pinning his opponent in the third round. Instead of the six points for each team, Shorewood grew their led to 18-0.

It was all Shorewood through the 145 pound match as StormRay Isaac VanHorn controlled the action for a 14 to 4 victory and a 22-0 team lead. Meadowdale made a brief rally with a win by forfeit and two pins over the next four weight classes to close to 28-18 with four matches to go.

Shorewood’s only other Senior, RJ Buchheit, stopped the Maverick rally in its tracks at 195 pounds as he used a “Gilbertson,” a feet-to-back cradle utilized by legendary Washington wrestler and current Arlington head coach Johnny Gilbertson, to shock and pin his opponent in the first period. Combined with a pin by Hunter Tibodeau at 220 pounds, Shorewood built an insurmountable team lead before winning by a final team score of 40 to 30.

A back and forth night for Shorewood wrestling team

Friday, January 14, 2022

By Clark Norton

It was a back and for night on Wednesday January 12, 2022 as the Shorewood wrestling team hosted the Mountlake Terrace Hawks.

Mountlake Terrace opened the evening with a pin in the first match at 138 pounds. Shorewood’s Isaac VanHorn gave an emphatic response at 145 pounds, bullying his opponent right from the whistle for a pin in just 32 seconds to tie the team score.

The Hawks refused to back down and used a pair of pins sandwiched around a forfeit to pull out to a 24-6 lead.

The depth of Shorewood gave the Stormrays (formerly Thunderbirds) the lead back as Mountlake Terrace was unable to field a wrestler in the next five weight classes.

Mountlake Terrace captain Sam Treperinas rallied his team with a first round pin at 120 pounds. Another Hawks pin at 126 pounds left the contest tied at 36 to 36 with only one match left.

In the ultimate match Shorewood sent out senior captain Quincy Laflin to face Terrace’s Malachi Hashimoto. It was a nervous energy as both wrestlers started by stalking and probing each other.  Hashimoto struck first with a single leg takedown to grab a 2 to 0 lead.

An out of bounds reset gave Laflin a chance to regroup and calm his nerves. Laflin exploded off the bottom for a one point escape and immediately attacked to secure a two point takedown and a 3 to 2 lead.

Once on top Laflin was relentless, pounding Hashimoto into the mat multiple times before turning him over for an emphatic pin and a 42 to 36 Shorewood win.

Shorewood wrestling wins both matches in a double dual Thursday at Shorecrest

Friday, December 10, 2021

Shorewood wrestling began their dual meet season with a pair of matches on Thursday night December 9, 2021 against the Knights of Kamiak and the Mariner Marauders.

Shorewood was the (close to) home team as the double dual was hosted by Shorecrest High School.

The Kamiak match was first and began with the 145lb bout. Shorewood fell into an early 9 point hole after two weights before getting its first win from Senior Ahmed Abdeen, in his first ever varsity contest, at 160 pounds.

The two teams traded forfeits before and after a Kamiak pin at heavyweight as the Knights built a 31-24 lead with only two bouts left.  Thunderbird Senior captain Quincy Laflin needed only 1:04 to pin his opponent and close the gap to 31-30.

For the ultimate match, winner take all, Shorewood's freshman James Nottingham stepped onto the mat for his first ever high school match. The two opponents battled to a scoreless draw after the first period. In the second round, Nottingham overcame a pair of penalties to scratch out a 5-2 lead. The third round was all Thunderbird as Nottingham controlled the action before getting the pin with 27 seconds left to secure the Shorewood victory.

The second match, against Mariner, would have none of the previous contest’s drama as Shorewood used their superior depth to overwhelm an under-manned Marauder’s squad and coast to a 60-12 win.

Shorewood wrestles next this Saturday, December 11th, at Chief Sealth High School in the Winter Wonder-Slam tournament.

By Clark Norton

The Shorewood wrestling team finished up their season on Wednesday night with a home match against the Mavericks of Meadowdale.

The match began at 132 pounds with Shorewood’s Quincy Laflin against Meadowdale’s Cy Dethlets. Laflin dominated from the opening whistle as he built an 8-2 lead in the first period. In the second period Dethlets found no respite as Laflin got the pin to get the Thunderbirds rolling.

By the time T-Bird sophomore Isaac Van Horn pinned his opponent in the 152 pound bout the Shorewood team lead had grown to 24-0.

Meadowdale got on the board with a pin from their senior captain Devin DeWeese at 152 pounds and picked up a forfeit at 170 pounds to narrow the score to 24-12.

Thunderbird RJ Buchheit stopped Meadowdale’s momentum in its tracks with a first round pin. A forfeit at 195 pounds and a hard-fought win at 220 pounds by junior captain Max Null ballooned the Shorewood lead 42-12. The Maverick’s kept competing until the very end and were able to win the final two matches for the final score of 42-24.

High school wrestling June 3 - Shorewood vs Shorecrest

Friday, June 4, 2021

By Clark Norton

Gamesmanship, strategy, deception or maybe even shenanigans, however you describe it, the Shorewood at Shorecrest wrestling match on Thursday, June 3, 2021 turned up roses for the Thunderbirds.

The match began at 170 pounds with Shorewood’s Alberto Solano against Shorecrest’s Peter Grimm. The two combatants spent the beginning of the match cautiously testing each other. Although only a freshman, and wrestling in a weight class higher than normal, Grimm tapped into his skills from many years of youth wrestling to go on the offensive. After a smooth takedown he slipped in his trademark leg-ride and bent Solano to his back for a pin.

The Shorecrest lead was short lived as Shorewood’s RJ Buchheit received a forfeit at 182 pounds to tie the score 6-6 before Shorewood’s coaching moves came into play.

At 195 pounds Shorewood coach Derek Norton chose to insert Leyton Houck into the varsity line-up, saving star sophomore Hunter Tibodeau, the usual varsity 195 pounder, for a later bout. It was a gamble as Houck had only wrestled varsity once before this season, but the move could not have worked out better. Houck dominated the first period for a 5-0 lead. In the second period, he kept up his relentless assault and got the pin just 28 seconds into the round to give the Thunderbirds their first team lead at 12-6.

T-Bird captain Max Null needed just 32 seconds to take care of business at 220 pounds and pin his opponent. Up next was heavyweight, where Coach Norton rolled the dice with Hunter Tibodeau against Shorecrest Scot captain Elijah Schultz. Tibodeau had weighed in at the bottom of the 220 pound weight class, allowing him to bump up one weight and compete in the 285 pound class. Schultz took no pity on Tibodeau, using his significant weight advantage to pound and smash the smaller opponent for the first takedown and a 2-0 advantage. After withstanding the initial onslaught, Tibodeau found his confidence and began taking the fight to Schultz.

Tibodeau scored 8 straight points across the second half of the first period and the beginning of the second period before getting the pin to extend the Thunderbird lead to 24-6, sending the Shorewood fans into a frenzy.

A dearth of Shorewood wrestlers allowed Shorecrest to narrow the score with a pair of forfeits in the 106 and 113 pound weight classes. At 120 pounds Shorecrest was set to receive a third forfeit in a row, but instead chose to forgo the free team points and bump their wrestler up to 126 pounds to face T-Bird Clayton Elder

It was at this point that Shorewood Coach Derek Norton made a surprising second gambit of the night. To the befuddlement of the crowd, Norton chose to give Shorecrest a forfeit and the automatic 6 team points to tie the score at 24-24. At this point Norton moved each of his final four wrestlers up one weight class, giving up size for what he perceived as favorable matchups.

Elder took advantage of a gap in Shorecrest’s line-up to receive a forfeit at 132 pounds before Shorewood captain Quincy Laflin slid up to the 138 pound class. Laflin came out firing and controlled the entire match on his way to a second round pin that stretched Shorewood's lead to 36-24 with only three bouts left.

Next up was 145 pounds, with Shorewood’s Henry Poetzl against Shorecrest's Thomas Rhodes

Rhodes, 3rd in state in 2020, continued his dominance over Shorewood with a first round pin, the 7th time he has defeated a T-bird wrestler in seven tries in his career.

Clinging to a 36-30 lead, Shorewood’s Coach Norton had no more moves to make and had to rely on his last two wrestlers to overcome the weight disadvantages he had challenged them with. Shorewood sophomore Isaac Van Horn put the nail in Shorecrest’s coffin with a come from behind pin in the 152 pound bout before sophomore Joseph Rivera emphatically mercy ruled his opponent at 160 pounds to give Shorewood the ultimate 47-30 team victory.

Shorewood wrestles their last match of the season next Wednesday, June 9th, at home against Meadowdale High School.

Shorewood wrestling match 5-28-21 vs Cascade answers the question of Why wrestle in a shortened pandemic season?

Sunday, May 30, 2021

By Clark Norton

When the 2021 wrestling season finally began in early May people asked “Why”?
Why wrestle if the season is only 5 weeks long? Why wrestle if you have to get Covid tested twice a week?
Why wrestle if there were no district, regional, or state tournaments?
Why wrestle if there would be no titles to win? Why wrestle?

The young men from Shorewood and Cascade high schools answered those questions and so much more in an entertaining, electric, and dramatic match on Friday night, May 28, 2021.

The contest began at 132 pounds with team captain Quincy Laflin the first Thunderbird to step on the mat. Laflin gave up the first takedown and quickly found himself locked up in a cradle. After fighting off his back he was able to get back to his feet and escape. Laflin didn’t let his second chance go to waste, scoring a takedown of his own and turning his opponent for a pin to give Shorewood the early 6-0 lead.

The two teams traded pins at 138 and 145 pounds before Shorewood's sophomore Joseph Rivera went out at 152 pounds. After giving up the first takedown Rivera was able to rally to grab a 3-2 at the end of the first period.

In the second round it was move after move, effort after effort, counter after counter as Rivera clung to a narrow 5-4 lead. In the third period the two wrestlers began on their feet and Rivera paused for just an instant, letting this guard down for just a moment and getting thrown straight to his back. After over a minute of fighting to stay alive Cascade finally solved the puzzle for a pin with just 23 seconds left in regulation.

Cascade built on their huge win at 152 pounds to take the next two weights and build a 24-12 lead. RJ Buchheit returned to the line-up for the Thunderbirds at 182 pounds after missing the last two matches and did not disappoint. After jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the first period, Buchheit turned his opponent early in the second period for a momentum killing pin.

Shorewood’s Hunter Tibodeau picked up a pin of his own at 195 pounds to tie the team score at 24-24 with just three bouts to go.

At 220 pounds Cascade’s Sam Kolesar put Shorewood’s Max Null on the defensive the entire match before finally getting a pin with only 3 seconds left in the third period that brought the entire gym to their feet.

T-bird heavyweight Milan Johnson fell behind 4-1 in his match before reversing his opponent for the pin as the two teams, each brimming with excitement, found themselves tied 30-30 with just one match remaining.

The final bout of the night featured Shorewood’s Clayton Elder against Cascade’s Kevin Jacks. Elder fell behind in the opening seconds, but fought back to put Jacks onto his back. With his shoulders just millimeters from defeat Jacks was saved by the buzzer at end of the first period. Elder built his lead up to 9-5 in the second period before being caught with a reversal to his back.

There was no salvation this time though as Jacks was able to get the pin with just one second remaining in the period to give Cascade a dramatic 36-30 victory.

So if anyone still wonders why we are wrestling this year, here is the answer. We wrestle for the nights like Friday. The joy of victories and the lessons learned in defeat. We wrestle for the competition and the camaraderie, the intensity and the passion. In this year of uncertainty we are grateful to wrestle. We wrestle. We wrestle because we can.

Shorewood wrestling vs Lynnwood 5-19-2021

Thursday, May 27, 2021

By Clark Norton

It was a back and forth night on Wednesday as Shorewood Wrestling played host to the Lynnwood Royals.

The match began with the 152 pound weight class and T-Bird sophomore Isaac Van Horn bumped up a weight class to get things started. Van Horn wasted no time, quickly taking his opponent to the mat and putting him in a cradle for a pin in just 38 seconds.

Lynnwood responded with a pin of their own at 160 pounds as the two teams traded wins for a 12-12 tie after four weights.

In the next match, Shorewood’s Hunter Tibodeau returned to his usual 195 pound weight class to compete against Lynnwood’s Isaac Hernandez. Using constant attacks Tibodeau was able to build a huge lead before finally getting the pin with four seconds left in the second period.

Lynnwood rallied with a pin at heavyweight and a forfeit at 113 pounds to briefly retake the lead 24-22, but Shorewood used their superior depth to earn three forfeit wins in the lower weights to narrowly escape with a 40-36 triumph.

Shorecrest wrestling vs Lynnwood 5-18-2021

By Bryan Officer

The Shorecrest Scots narrowly defeated the Lynnwood Royals Tuesday night in an exciting dual meet that came down to the final match.

Kaiju Fergerson gave Shorecrest an early lead thanks to a forfeit at 120 pounds, followed up by a hard-fought win at 126 pounds by sophomore Joseph Martinez. Joseph secured the pin and what would prove to be valuable team points with just 34 seconds remaining in the match. (Scots lead 12-0 through two matches)

Thomas Rhodes continued the hot start with a competitive bout against Kayden Richman-Myers at 138 pounds. Thomas pinned his man, improving his record to 2-0 on the season. Next up was another forfeit, accepted by Shorecrest junior Jacob Lougee.

Things were looking good for the Scots, up 24-0. But then the Royals hit their stride, winning the next 6 consecutive bouts. Highlighted by pins from Tim Johann, Coty Green, Diego Amos and Isaac Hernandez.

In the midst of that run by Lynnwood, the Royals team captain Nathaniel Wilder defeated Shorecrest's Peter Grimm.

Trailing by just a few points at the start of round two, Grimm of Shorecrest chose top position and was able to turn his opponent to his back but was unable to stick both shoulders flat to the mat. Wilder of Lynnwood escaped the hold and continued scoring points of his own, handing the talented Scots freshman an 11-2 defeat.

Dylan White's acceptance of a forfeit at 220 put Lynnwood in the driver seat, up 33-24, erasing what had seemed like a solid Shorecrest lead. However, the Scots would rally back. Spurred on by a limited capacity, but full of excitement crowd, Shorecrest team captain Elyjah Schultz pinned his opponent in the heavyweight bout.

A double forfeit at the lightest weight class (106 lb.) set up the final match of the night. Shorecrest sophomore George Fernandez vs. Lynnwood sophomore Phillipe Ban.

Ban of Lynnwood scored the first points in the match, taking down Fernandez in round one. But then, a short time later, the SC sophomore reversed his opponent and flipped Ban over to his back. George squeezed tight and secured the pin with just 12 seconds left in the first round. The Scots bench erupted after the come from behind win by Fernandez.

Final score: Scots 36 - Royals 33

The Royals drop to 2-1 on the season while the Scots improve to 2-0.

This was a battle, no doubt. Both young squads are made up of primarily freshman and sophomores. These two schools look like they will have close matchups for years to come. Looking forward to it!
