Shorewood wrestling 5-14-21

By Clark Norton

It was a nail-biter Friday night as the Shorewood wrestling team travelled to Duval to face off against the Red Wolves of Cedarcrest.

With both teams short-handed this season team points were few and far between. The two teams each forfeited the the lowest four weight classes before wrestling commenced with the 132 pounders.

Shorewood’s Quincy Laflin came out with a flurry of motion, needing just seconds to get the first takedown. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw despite having the lead due to an injury sustained in the opening minute, giving Cedarcrest a 6-0 team lead.

At 138 pounds Thunderbird freshman Henry Poetzl made his varsity debut. Poetzl found himself behind 8-3 with mere seconds left before reversing his opponent to his back. He was unable to get the pin, but his late points tied the match at 8-8 and sent the combatants into overtime. Despite numerous close calls, frantic scrambles and two scoreless overtimes, Poetzl couldn’t hold on and lost 9-8.

Cedarcrest would pull out to a 13-0 lead in the team score before Shorewood picked up three straight forfeits to move ahead 18-13. At 195 pounds Shorewood’s Hunter Tibodeau collided with Cedarcrest’s two time state placer Matthew Weinert. Weinert went to his trademark cradle in the second period to score near fall points, while Tibodeau never could get his offense going. It was a hard-fought struggle that would have been appropriate for tournament championship as Weinert prevailed 7-3.

After a Cedarcrest pin at 220 pounds Shorewood was behind 22-18 with only the heavyweight match remaining. T-Bird Milan Johnson was looking to build on his comeback victory in the past match, but also knew he needed a pin for the team score. Johnson put himself out of position time and again trying to capture a big win for his teammates. Tied 3-3 after regulation the big boys went into sudden death overtime where Johnson was able to get a takedown for the decision, but Cedarcrest escaped with a narrow 22-21 team victory.

Shorewood wrestles next on Tuesday, May 18th @ Mariner High School.

Shorewood Wrestling 5/12/2021

Thursday, May 13, 2021

By Clark Norton

Nervousness dominated the atmosphere of the gym Wednesday night as the Shorewood Thunderbirds stepped onto the wrestling mat to face the visiting Mariners Marauders in the first match of the season.

Fifteen months had passed since the athletes last competed and both schools featured several new wrestlers in the varsity line-up.

The match began at 170 pounds and the two teams traded forfeits for a 6-6 tie in the team score.

The first actual contest came in the 195 pound weight class. Looking to build off of his 5th place finish in the 2020 state tournament Shorewood’s Hunter Tibodeau got the T-birds going in style. Tibodeau needed just 8 seconds to get a takedown and a mere 48 seconds to get the pin.

Junior Max Null followed with his own first round pin in the 220 pound match as Shorewood moved out to an 18-6 team lead before the match of the night at heavyweight.

After being thrown from his feet straight to his back in the opening seconds, Shorewood sophomore Milan Johnson used every last ounce of his energy and muscle to stay alive before reversing his opponent. Once on top Johnson wasted no time, quickly putting the other wrestler on his back to secure the dramatic comeback pin.

Johnson’s pin was the third in a string of six straight first round pins for Shorewood. The run was punctuated by sophomore Joseph Rivera’s lightning fast, 19 second pin in the 152 bout as Shorewood triumphed 42-12.

Shorewood wrestles next this Friday, May 14th at Cedarcrest High School. Due to restrictions on fan attendance, all matches are being live streamed this season. Below is a link to finding each host schools' streaming channel so you can watch and support the team as we wrestle through the season. Wrestling: Five Shorecrest wrestlers place at State tournament

Shorecrest wrestling team 2020

Text and photos by Sean Rhodes, SC Assistant Wrestling Coach

Shorecrest Wrestling had an excellent showing at the State Tournament (Mat Classic XXXII 2020) last weekend, February 21-23, 2020 at the Tacoma Dome.

In the entire 59 year history of Shorecrest High School, only eight wrestlers have ever placed at the State tournament. The last time we had a state placer was Owen Donnelly in 2016.

On this weekend, there were 5 state placers!

The team placed 10th out of 61 teams in the 3A division.

A huge factor in the team’s success this year was the work ethic and leadership of the two senior captains: Kaiya “Kyle” Conway-Yasuyama and Trentyn “Trevor” Good, and the athleticism and dedication of senior Ian ”Martinez” Mortensen.

Individual results:

Trentyn Good (Senior) 152lbs - 3rd place
with head coach Bryan Officer

Thomas Rhodes (Sophomore) 113lbs - 4th place

Ian Mortensen (Senior) 170lbs - 7th place
with head coach Bryan Officer

Jordan Glesener (Junior) 285lbs - 7th place
left, with SC shirt

Kaiya Conway- Yasuyama (Senior) 132lbs - 8th place

They will all be living in the hall of fame at Shorecrest High School.

The Shorecrest Wrestling team had their best team results of the 2019/2020 season at the WIAA 3A KingCo-Wesco South District Tournament at Juanita High School in Kirkland last Saturday.

Under the leadership of Coach Bryan Officer and Assistant Coach Louis Uhm, Shorecrest brought 20 wrestlers to the District Tournament. Of those participating, 50% qualified for the regional tournament (WA State Championship qualifying tournament) in Kelso next weekend with eight qualifiers and two alternates.

Shorecrest sent five wrestlers to the finals matches, with two champions and three second place finishers. This is only the second time in the school's history that the Scots had five wrestlers make it to the championship matches.
As a team, the Scots took 3rd place, tying with Meadowdale High School. Four of the district finalists (Conway, Rhodes, Good and Mortensen) are ranked among the top ten wrestlers in the State (3A Division) by the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). The team result was the same as last season, which was best Shorecrest had ever performed in the district tournament.

Kiaya Conway-Yasuyama (Senior Captain, 132lbs, Ranked #6 in State) pinned Shorewood wrestler Curt Tanaka (Ranked #16 in State) in the finals and became Shorecrest's first ever consecutive four year district champion (District Champion Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior year).

Wrestling: Shorewood boys second at subregionals

Monday, February 10, 2020

Devin Leach was the only wrestler to win his
match but the team came in second.

By Clark Norton

Shorewood wrestlers began their postseason journeys February 7-8, 2020 with the boys wrestling at Juanita High School and the girls at Chief Sealth High School. Both tournaments began on Friday afternoon and finished Saturday night.

The boys tournament was made up of the ten schools in the KingCo 3A and Wesco South 3A conferences.

The top five placers at each weight class advance to the Regional tournament next Saturday at Kelso High School against the best of the Greater Saint Helens League.

As they have done all season the Thunderbirds relied upon their depth as they pinned their way to twelve wrestlers in the semifinals and at the top of the team scores by the end of Friday's wrestling.

Saturday began with some heartbreaking losses and bright spots, too as Shorewood moved three wrestlers into the finals. In the consolation brackets the T-birds refused to give up.

Although Shorewood only had one individual champion, Devin Leach at 152 pounds, they placed eleven competitors in the top five, and one more just missed advancing by taking sixth.

The whole team effort allowed the Thunderbirds to place second in the team scores, the best they have done in many years.

Girls at Chief Sealth
While the boys grappled at Juanita the girls had their own tournament at Chief Sealth.

Despite only having five wrestlers in the brackets they came in thirteen out of thirty-two schools.

Wrestling next weekend at the Regional tournament, hosted by Sedro-Woolley High School, will be sisters Cosette Lumsden, third at 105 pounds, and Sophia Lumsden, third at 110 pounds.

Wrestling: Shorewood reclaims Spartan Cup from Shorecrest; first SW girl to compete in varsity wins her match

Shorewood teams cheers for Spartan Cup
By Clark Norton

It was a Friday night classic as the Shorewood wrestling team took on their crosstown rivals Shorecrest in the battle for the Spartan Cup in the final contest of the regular season.

Shorecrest toughed out a narrow 28-26 victory last season, ending Shorewood's nine match winning streak in the series.

The wrestling began at 120 pounds with Shorewood's Kai Layton against Shorecrest's Joseph Martinez.

Layton set the tone early as he pinned Martinez in the first round. A pin from Isaac Van Horn at 126 pounds and a major decision from Aidan Jung at 132 pounds gave Shorewood a 16-0 lead.

It was all about the seniors in the middle weights with each team sending out three seniors in a row.

Shorecrest sent out captain Kaiya Conway-Yasuyama at 138 pounds and Shorewood countered with Curt Tanaka. Both wrestlers struggled to get past their opponent's defense, but Conway-Yasuyama ground out a 3-1 win to get Shorecrest on the board.

At 145 pounds Thunderbird Kody Carpenter bullied his way to a 10-0 lead early into the second period before pinning Scot Arthur Christopher.

It was a battle of wills at 152 pounds between T-Bird Devin Leach and Scot Trentyn Good. Leach held a tight 5-3 lead going into the third period before Good rallied late. Aided by a controversial stalling penalty against Leach, Good was able to send get a late escape and force overtime. Neither wrestler could score in the first overtime before Good scored with seconds left in the second overtime for a 9-8 win. Thanks to close losses and the dominant pin Shorewood maintained its 16 edge in the team score.

Cole Becker got his fourth pin of the week at 160 pounds to stretch Shorewood's lead to 28-6. Three matches later T-Bird Max Null pinned his opponent to give Shorewood an insurmountable lead of 40-10 with four matches left. Shorecrest refused to go away quietly though, needing only 65 seconds combined to get pins at 220 and 285 pounds.

Cossette Lumsden first
girl to compete on SW
varsity team
At 106 pounds a bit of Shorewood history was made as freshman Cossette Lumsden became the first Shorewood girl wrestler to ever wrestle in the varsity line-up. Just being there wasn't good enough as she made the most of her spot and pinned her opponent a minute and fifty seconds into the first period. Lumsden's pin gave Shorewood its final points of the night as the Thunderbirds won 46-25, reclaiming the Spartan Cup.

Wrestling: Shorewood boys in triple-dual against Ingraham, Cedarcrest, and Edmonds-Woodway

Friday, January 31, 2020

Quincy Laflin
By Clark Norton

It was a wild day of wrestling for the Shorewood Thunderbirds on Wednesday as they took their undefeated record to Edmonds-Woodway high school for a triple-dual against Ingraham, Cedarcrest and Edmonds-Woodway.

The wrestling began with Shorewood facing the Metro League Ingraham. The T-Birds found themselves behind 12-6 after the first three weights. At 126 pounds freshman Isaac Van Horn pulled off a back-and-forth 18-12 victory and it was all Shorewood from then on.

Over the eight weight classes from 126 to 182 pounds Shorewood went on a 44-0 run as they cruised to a 56-20 victory.

The second contest of the night was Shorewood against Cedarcrest. Both teams entered the match undefeated in the league and eying a District Championship.

Sophomore Quincy Laflin stepped on the mat first at 113 pounds and picked up his seventh pin in his last seven matches to give Shorewood an early lead. After each Shorewood win Cedarcrest responded with a win of their own for an 18-18 tie after 145 pounds.

A forfeit at 152 gave Shorewood another narrow lead. Junior Cole Becker at 160 pounds wasted no time as he needed just 38 seconds to pin his opponent to stretch the Thunderbird advantage. RJ Buchheit and Hunter Tibodeau continued the pin party as Shorewood jumped out to a 42-18 lead with just four weights to go.

At 195 pounds Cedarcrest stopped the bleeding with a tough second round pin by Matthew Weinert, ranked #2 in the state. With momentum back on their side they pinned again at 220 and 285 pounds and then got a forfeit at 106 to tie the team score 42-42.

It went to the rule books as the referees and coaches went through the tie-breaker rules to determine an outcome. It went all the way to the ninth tie-breaker, most first points scored across all of the individual matches, for Shorewood to be declared the winner and remain undefeated.

Devin Leach
After the close call against Cedarcrest, Shorewood finished the night against the reigning Wesco South Champion Edmonds-Woodway Warriors.

With both teams undefeated the winner would clinch a district title.

The dual began at 120 pounds and Ed-way wasted no time as they got a pin to open the scoring. Things looked bad for Shorewood in the second bout as Isaac Van Horn fell behind 7-2 after the first period. He picked the bottom position to begin the second round and reversed his opponent to his back for a pin to tie the team score 6-6.

The Warriors pulled back ahead by winning the next three weights. Thunderbird senior captain Devin Leach went out at 152 pounds and faced off against two-time state placer Howie Hare. Leach left zero doubt as he dominated the entire way for an 8-1 win. Cole Becker followed Leach and got his 3rd pin of the day.

Hunter Tibodeau
After a loss at 170 pounds it was freshman Hunter Tibodeau at 182 pounds. Tibodeau tossed his opponent to his back in the opening seconds of the first round and got the pin.

With the win, Tibodeau not only got his team-leading 26th win of the season, but he broke the Shorewood record for most regular season wins by a freshman.

The teams each got a close decision in the next two weights as Edmonds-Woodway clung to a 28-24 lead with three weights left. Showing why they are reigning champs, Edmonds-Woodway closed the night with a pair of pins at 285 and 113 sandwiched around a forfeit at 106 for a final team score of 46-24.

Shorewood wrestles next against their cross-town rivals Shorecrest Friday night, January 31, 2020 for the Spartan Cup. Wrestling will begin at 7pm at Shorecrest.

Wrestling: Shorewood boys win tournament title and four of the girls place

Thursday, January 30, 2020

Shorewood wrestling teams

Shorewood wrestling headed down to Raymond Washington over the weekend to compete in the Doug Makaiwi Memorial Tournament at Raymond High School. As the reigning tournament champions the Thunderbirds had a lot of pressure to perform at their best.

Shorewood's sole individual title came from sophomore Quincy Laflin at 113 pounds as he pinned every opponent he faced.

It was a true team effort at the other weights as Shorewood had ten other wrestlers place in the top 3 to run away with another team title.

While the boys took home a team title the Thunderbird girls also had a strong showing. Kiana Yoshimura won her first tournament title as four of the ladies placed in top 3.

Wrestling: Shorewood wins their final home match of the season

Friday, January 24, 2020

Kody Carpenter 145lb

It was Senior Night on Thursday, January 23, 2020 as Shorewood welcomed the Meadowdale Mavericks for their final home match of the season.

The contest began at 126 pounds with Shorewood senior Kai Layton. Layton jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first period before pinning his opponent in the second to start things well.

After Meadowdale won at 132 pounds Shorewood began a string of three straight senior captains. At 138 pounds Thunderbird Curt Tanaka faced off against Meadowdale's Jin Lee, ranked #7 in the state. Tanaka countered numerous attacks to cling to a 4-1 lead before Lee was forced to injury default halfway through the second period.

At 145 pounds Kody Carpenter got the first takedown before being reversed to his back. After a furious fight to avoid the pin Carpenter found himself with a 5-2 deficit at the end of the first round. After securing a reversal in the second period he caught his opponent with a big throw for a dramatic pin that sent the crowd into a deafening roar.

At 152 pounds it was a battle of ranked wrestlers between Shorewood's Devin Leach, ranked #7, and Meadowdale's Thaddeus Gonzalez, ranked #8. Points were hard to come by, but Leach pulled out a 3-2 win.

Thanks to the four for four night from the seniors, Shorewood had stretched the team lead to 21-6. T-Bird Cole Becker kept things going when he pinned 10th ranked Caleb Monilas in the next match. By the time sophomore Max Null pinned his opponent at 195 pounds it was a 30-3 run for the Thunderbirds.

The Mavericks refused to quit and narrowed the gap with a trio of pins, but it was too little, too late. Sophomore Quincy Laflin at 120 pounds dominated his way to a first round pin in the final match of the night to send the fans home happy with a final score of 42-27.
