Wrestling: Shorewood sends girls team to Lady Hawk Invitational

Monday, January 20, 2020

Shorewood girls wrestling team
with coach Derek Norton

The Shorewood girls wrestling team went to Mountlake Terrace High School on Saturday and wrestled in the first ever Lady Hawk Invitational.

Cossette Lumsden took 3rd at 105lbs

It was the first tournament of the season for the ladies and no one was quite sure what to expect.

With only five wrestlers the ladies won twelve matches, 10 by pin, and placed 7th out of twenty-two schools.

The 10 pins were the fourth most of any school there. Leading the way were a pair of freshmen as Cossette Lumsden took 3rd place at 105 pounds and Kiana Yoshimura took 4th place at 190 pounds.

Shorewood wrestling continued their undefeated season with a dominant win over Lynnwood on Thursday night.

The match began with the big boys at 285 and Lynnwood grabbed a second round pin for an early lead. After a forfeit at 106 pounds the host Royals were ahead 12-0. The Thunderbirds came roaring back behind three pins, two forfeits, and a narrow 8-7 win by senior Kai Layton at 126lbs to score 33 straight team points over the next six weights.

Lynnwood tried to get a rally going after a close 3-2 double overtime win at 152 pounds, but the T-birds had too much depth and fire-power. From 160 to 195 pounds Shorewood grabbed three pins in a row and a major decision, including 182 pound freshman Hunter Tibodeau's team-leading 20th win, as they steamrolled Lynnwood for a 55-21 victory.

Shorewood's next match is Senior Night at home next Thursday, January 23, 2020 against Meadowdale. JV begins at 5:30pm and varsity is at 7pm.

Wrestling: Shorecrest takes down Lynnwood and ties Meadowdale

Saturday, January 11, 2020

The Shorecrest Scots continued to gain momentum Thursday night, January 9, 2020 in a double dual against the Meadowdale Mavericks and the Lynnwood Royals.

In the first match, the Scots faced off against the Royals. The Royals have been re-building their program this year and were hungry for a Wesco South win.

With several holes in the Shorecrest lineup on Thursday night, it is possible they could have achieved that goal given the right circumstances.

It is noteworthy to mention that 85lb Scot freshman George Fernandez went out into the lineup first in the 106lb slot and went three rounds with Phillipe Ban, who is nearly 15lbs heavier. Fernandez was ultimately pinned down by the heavier opponent, but he showed his heart and fighting spirit to his brothers on the mat.

The Royals continued to lead in the lightweight contests and also continued to show strength in the middle weight battles. The Scots eventually overwhelmed the Royals in the middle weight and heavy weight categories, starting with close wins by Arthur Christopher at 145lbs and Trentyn Good at 152lbs and ending with two decisive pins by Elyjah Shultz and Jordan Gleasener. The Royals also gave up several forfeits throughout the lineup, which put the Scots ahead at the end of the dual for a final score of 39-28.

In the second half of the double dual Shorecrest took on the Marauding Meadowdale Mavericks, which proved to be a bigger challenge to the Scots. Again, 85lb freshman George Fernandez was sent to the fore, but this time he faced an even larger opponent (Hilmy Birch) in the 106lb bracket. The match ended with a pin that put the Mavericks 6 points ahead.

The two teams traded a couple of forfeits, then things picked up for the Scots with an unexpected and exciting 3rd round pin by Joseph Martinez in the 120lb Bracket against Skyler Rivera. However, the Mavericks quickly regained the lead with a pin in the 132lb contest.

Then, in a moment of shock and awe, there was an unexpected pin late in the 3rd round against Scot Captain Kaiya Conway-Yasuyama, who was leading by 5 points against Maverick wrestler Jin Lee.

Arthur Christopher -145lbs and Trentyn Good -152lbs, were able to rally and earn two pins for the Scots, but the Mavericks took the 160lb bracket and the 182lb brackets. The Scots rebounded with a win in the 170lb slot and the heavyweight slots, but the score remained even at 40 points for each team after the 14 contests were finished.

In the sport of wrestling, there is no such thing as a tie. Therefore, the referee opened up his rule book and went through the tie-breaking criteria. The first five criteria, (Criteria A-E) were not met for either team to break the tie. But then at Criteria F (Forfeits), the referee arrived at a tie-breaker he could hang his hat on.

According to the WIAA 2019-2020 Wrestling Rule book, in the event of a tie, the team that gives up more forfeits loses by 1 team point! In this case, the tie break went against Shorecrest. It is interesting to note that there was a previous tie with the Mavericks back in 2013-2014 season.

Wrestling: Shorecrest High School takes 2nd Place at the Lynnwood Classic Tournament

Tuesday, December 24, 2019

Shorecrest wrestling team

Shorecrest High School Wrestling had a good showing at the Lynnwood Classic Tournament on Saturday, December 21, 2019 and took second place as a team out of 14 other high school squads.

Out of 11 participants, nine of the Shorecrest wrestlers placed in their individual brackets. Of those nine, seven wrestlers placed in the top three.

Leading the pack were the seniors: Team Captain Kaiya Conway-Yasuyama is now a champion at the Lynnwood Classic Tournament four years in a row (2016, 113lb Champion; 2017, 113lb Champion, 2018, 132lb Champion, and 2019, 138lb Champion).

Co-Captain Trentyn Good took first place in the 160lb bracket.

Ian Mortensen, another talented Shorecrest Senior, took 1st place in the 170lb bracket.

Seniors Jordan Glesener and Elyjah Shultz also racked up team points by taking 3rd place in the heavyweight bracket and the 220lb bracket (respectively).

Senior Arthur Christopher took 5th in a tough 152lb bracket.

Senior Connor Carrell, who just started the sport two years ago, wrestled two tough matches in the 195lb bracket.

The underclassmen also had a good showing in Lynnwood:

Junior Wyatt Patenaude got some mat time in Lynnwood on Saturday and is showing steady improvement. Patenaude is a recent heavyweight recruit from the Shorecrest football team and has been making big strides practicing in the mat room with Glesener and Shultz.

Thomas Rhodes, Sophomore, took 3rd after a close match with Jose Zamora Solorzano, a Junior at Mariner High School.

Freshman Joseph Martinez also placed 3rd in the 120lb bracket after defeating James Zhen of Mariner High School.

Freshman Benji Caar - 182lbs, got some good experience wrestling two tough matches at Lynnwood as well.

Overall, this was a good development tournament for Shorecrest. It is obvious several of the returning seniors are starting to hit their stride and are ready for the next challenge.

Bryan Officer, who recently took the Highlander Wrestling Head Coach position this year after serving as the assistant coach since 2012, believes the key to future success will be to bring the rest of the team up to speed and fill in the remaining gaps in the lineup at 106lbs, 126lbs and 132lbs.

When asked about the team after the tournament, Officer stated "I am excited about the continuous improvement we are seeing with a lot of our wrestlers."

Wrestling: A stress filled night for Shorewood team

Saturday, December 21, 2019

It was another stress filled night for the Shorewood wrestling team on Tuesday as they defeated the Chargers of Marysville-Getchell 39-36.

The match began with the heavyweights and points were at a premium. The score was tied 1-1 going into sudden death overtime where a mistimed throw by Shorewood's Taejin Thongdee gave Getchell a takedown and an early 3-0 lead in the team score.

A pair of forfeits and a narrow 2-1 victory at 120 pounds allowed the Chargers to pull ahead 18-0. At 126 pounds Shorewood's Kai Layton returned to the varsity line-up after missing the past week due to illness and pinned his opponent to get Shorewood on the board.

Two matches later, at 138 pounds, Aidan Jung needed just 44 seconds for the pin. Jung was the first of five straight Thunderbirds to emerge victorious as Shorewood grabbed a 33-24 advantage.

A loss at 182 pounds left Shorewood with just a three point lead with two matches to go. Freshman Hunter Tibodeau responded to the challenge as he gave Shorewood an insurmountable lead with his seventh pin in his last seven matches.

Shorewood wrestles next this Saturday at the Barry Knott Classic hosted by Nathan Hale High School. Wrestling begins at 10am.

Wrestling: A rough week for Shorecrest but they showed their mental toughness

Shorecrest Dual Meet Results vs Cascade High School and Jackson High School

A scoreboard captures wins and losses, but sometimes the scoreboard is not a true measure of a team's potential or an individuals' growth.

Shorecrest lost contests to both Cascade High School and Jackson High School Thursday night by 6 points and 18 points respectively. However, there was still something special that happened on those mats.

It had been a rough week for Shorecrest High School Wrestling. The squad lost a dual meet to Mariner High School last week, its first debut of the season, with many of the athletes rusty from the off-season and not quite ready for competition.

And then with a school lockdown on Monday and a school closure on Wednesday, there were missed practices and other various eligibility issues. However, despite some holes in the varsity line-up and emerging from a cloud of anxiety related to the lockdown, Shorecrest put its best foot forward.

New to the varsity line-up for the first time ever was Gauge Basile (Sophmore), who loves being on the team, but has not seen much varsity action. Despite his inexperience, he went out into the tough weight class of 138lbs and filled the spot for a team mate who was not eligible. The fact he was willing to make that effort, despite going against far more experienced wrestlers, inspired the rest of the team.

Other wrestlers new to the varsity line up were Mathew Curtis (Freshman), Aiden Didio (Sophmore) and Connor Carrell (Senior) who showed a lot of effort and improvement last night. All three of these wrestlers deserve a "fire in the belly" award. Carrell in particular seems to have "Drank the Kool-Aid" this year as he has been going into the weight room every morning at 6:30am to work on his conditioning.

Another honorable mention is George Fernandez (Freshman), who weighs in at under 90lbs, but wrestled up to 106lbs to represent Shorecrest against David Fairwell of Jackson High School. Fernandez wrestled tough during his varsity match up and also was able to get some valuable JV experience in last night as well.

The bottom line is this: at its best the sport of wrestling teaches mental and physical toughness. Considering what these Shorecrest athletes went through at school this week, and from what I saw on the mat last night, these kids are definitely benefiting from those lessons.

Assistant Wrestling Coach, Shorecrest High School

Wrestling: Shorewood wins double dual with one point victory over Jackson

Friday, December 13, 2019

Shorewood had its first home wrestling meet on Thursday when they hosted Cascade and Jackson in a double dual.

The Thunderbirds faced off against Cascade in the first match and things could hardly have gone better.

Senior Devin Leach began the contest with a first round pin in the 160 pound bout. Next up was Junior Cole Becker, who barely broke a sweat as he needed a measly 15 seconds to toss his opponent to his back and pin him.

Four more first round pins followed for the T-birds as they raced out to a 36-0 lead in the team score. Shorewood senior Kody Carpenter finished the match by also pinning his opponent, in the first round, as Shorewood routed Cascade 72-6.

In the second match of the night Shorewood took on Jackson. The Timberwolves from Everett gave quick notice that they would not be pushed around by grabbing a 6-0 lead win a pin in the first bout.

Shorewood rallied behind pins from sophomore RJ Bucheit who bumped up a weight class at 182 pounds and freshman Hunter Tibodeau, plus a forfeit at 220 pounds to take an 18-6 lead.

Jackson responded by taking three straight weights themselves to grab a 21-18 lead.

After a pin by Quincy Laflin at 120 pounds briefly took the lead back for Shorewood, Jackson scored 14 straight team points for a 35-24 lead with only three weights left.

Seniors Curt Tanaka at 145 pounds and Kody Carpenter at 152 pounds each gutted out huge decisions to pull Shorewood within 5 points with one match to go.

As the gym cheered Thunderbird Devin Leach stepped out for the final match. With an aggressive takedown Leach took down his opponent in just seconds and quickly turned him over for a pin to give his team a narrow 36-35 victory.

Wrestling: Shorewood out of conference victory over Mariner High School

Wednesday, December 11, 2019

Shorewood's wrestlers began their dual meet season on Tuesday with an out of conference victory over Mariner High School.

After Mariner won the first match the Thunderbirds responded with 18 straight team points punctuated by a pin from heavyweight Taejin Thongdee.

The teams split the next four matches as Shorewood maintained a 14 point lead.

At 138 pounds T-bird freshman Isaac Van Horn stepped out for his first varsity match and pinned his opponent in the first period. He was followed by senior Curt Tanaka at 145 pounds.

Tanaka had the fastest pin of the night, needing only 23 seconds for the pin as Shorewood stretched their lead before holding on for a 46-26 win.

Shorewood wrestles next at home on Thursday, December 12, 2019 against Jackson and Cascade.

It was a tough first outing for the Shorewood wrestling team on Saturday as they began their season at the Edmonds Invitational at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

In a tournament filled with top ranked wrestlers from thirty-three schools from across the state the Thunderbirds definitely showed some rust from the offseason.

While the whole team showed promise, three wrestlers took home medals as senior Kody Carpenter at 152 pounds and freshman Hunter Tibodeau at 195 pounds each took 7th place while senior Devin Leach captured the 152 pound title.

Einstein wrestling battles Kellogg and sibling coaches compete for league title

Saturday, March 23, 2019

It was a battle for the league title on Thursday, March 21, 2019 as the undefeated Einstein Tigers wrestling team visited the 2nd place Kellogg Knights.

Kellogg took the early lead with a pair of pins from George Fernandez at 81 pounds and Kaiju Ferguson at 88 pounds. Einstein bounced right back and won the next three matches to take their first lead at 13-12.

Over the several weights the two teams traded victories back and forth. When Kellogg's Matthew Curtis came back from a 4-0 deficit to pin his opponent in the second round of the 133 pound match the two teams found themselves tied at 30-30.

Einstein's Grant Harley held on for a 9-7 win at 140 pounds to reclaim the lead for the Tigers that would start an 18-0 run over four weights. Kellogg tried to rally, but three late pins from Ryder Baldwin, Jessie Gigrich and Jacob Smith weren't quite enough as Einstein held on for a narrow 54-48 victory.

The win also gave Einstein Coach Derek Norton his first undefeated season in fifteen years as head coach at the school

Kellogg Middle School wrestling faced two teams Thursday - and prevailed over both

Sunday, March 17, 2019

Kellogg hosted a pair of schools on Thursday, March 14, 2019 and proved themselves up to the task.

In their first match they faced off against the Eisenhower Patriots. Thanks to the Knights' superior depth they opened the match by receiving three forfeits for an 18-0 lead in the team score.

When Eisenhower did have wrestlers, Kellogg continued their dominance as they expanded their lead to 42-9. Kellogg never let Eisenhower get close thanks to pins from eight different Knight wrestlers, including a lightning quick 17 second pin from Shokan Conway-Yuasa at 103 pounds, as they pulled away for a 78-33 victory.

In the second match of the day, Kellogg faced off against the Guardians of Gateway Middle School.

Early on it was all Gateway as they raced out to a commanding 30-12 lead. Kellogg rebounded by picking up a trio of forfeits and a pin from Ole Burns at 128 pounds to take their first lead at 36-30.

Gateway was not to be denied, though, as they won the next three matches to move back in front. At 167 pounds Kellogg sent out team co-captain Cage Jensen. After his first takedown was nullified because of a slam call Jensen continued to be aggressive, picking up his opponent and taking him down straight to his back for a 36 second pin. The Knight's other co-captain, Ryder Baldwin, followed Jensen at 178 pounds and overwhelmed his opponent to remain perfect on the season and reclaim the team lead at 48-45.  A pin from Ramy Abdalla at 188 pounds and a pair of forfeits gave Kellogg a final come-from-behind victory of 66-45.

Kellogg wrestles next on Monday, March 18, 2019 at Olympic View Middle School.

Kellogg Knights wrestling take on the league champion at home meet

Tuesday, March 12, 2019

The Kellogg Middle School Knights had their first home meet of the season on Tuesday as they hosted the reigning league champion Evergreen Timberwolves from Everett.

With a pair of close wins and a pair of forfeits Evergreen jumped out to an early 21-6 lead. At 108 pounds Knights' wrestler Porter Lewis continued his hot start to the season and stayed undefeated by pinning his opponent in just 43 seconds.

Two matches later, Kellogg’s Peter Grimm picked up a pin of his own, in 47 seconds, to also stay undefeated. After a win by Matthew Curtis at 133 pounds the Knights had narrowed the team score to 33-30. Evergreen took a forfeit at 140 pounds to start a 21-0 run of their own.

Pins by Kellogg’s Ryder Baldwin and Ramy Abdalla at 178 and 188 pounds electrified the crowd, but proved to be too little, too late as Evergreen pulled away for a 72-42 team win.

Kellogg Knights wrestling team wins first two matches of the season

Sunday, March 10, 2019

The Kellogg Knights Middle School kicked off the wrestling season on Friday night with matches against the Meadowdale Vikings and the Brier Terrace Bulldogs.

In the first match of the season the Knights faced off against Meadowdale. The match started well for Kellogg as they grabbed a forfeit at 81 pounds and a pin from George Fernandez at 88 pounds for an early 12-0 lead. The teams traded wins over the next five weights as the Knights held on to the lead thanks in part to a narrow 13-11 win by Porter Lewis at 108 pounds and a first round pin by Peter Grimm at 118 pounds.

Meadowdale would rally by winning four matches in row and five of six, included back-to-back one point wins at 133 and 140 pounds. Those close losses prevented the Vikings from running up the team score as they took a 42-33 lead.

At 167 pounds Knight wrestler Cage Jensen put an end to Meadowdale’s momentum, making quick work of his opponent with a first round pin. Following Jensen, Ryder Baldwin also got a first round pin for Kellogg at 178 pounds to give Kellogg the lead again at 45-42. After Kellogg received a forfeit at 188 pounds the Knights sent out Jessie Gigrich at 218 pounds. Gigrich used a vicious head-and-arm to toss his opponent from his feet straight to his back for a huge pin that gave the team an insurmountable lead on their way to the 57-54 victory.

In Kellogg’s second match they went against the Brier Terrace Bulldogs. The match started in a similar fashion to the Meadowdale match as Brier Terrace took a slight 15-12 lead thanks to an 8-6 win at 103 pounds. Kellogg wrestler Porter Lewis stepped on the mat at 108 pounds and pinned his opponent in just over a minute to take back the lead at 18-15. Sparked by Lewis, Kellogg won six matches in a row, highlighted by a dramatic 13-11 overtime victory by Ole Burns at 128 pounds.

Thanks to some forfeits in the upper weights and another pin from Gigrich at 218 pounds the Knights ran away with Bulldogs for a 75-30 victory.

Kellogg’s next match will next Tuesday, March 12th, as they host the Evergreen Timberwolves.

Thanks to snow ten Shorecrest High School wrestlers qualify for Regionals and State Championships

Monday, February 11, 2019

Scot Team Photo at Wesco Districts

In one of many milestones for the Shorecrest High School Wrestling Team this year, ten wrestlers qualified for regionals at the WESCO South District Tournament last weekend. This is a first for Shorecrest High School, which has always been able to count their Regional qualifiers on one hand.

In an even stranger string of events linked to the freakish snowy weather, the regional tournament was cancelled Saturday and all ten Shorecrest High School wrestlers (and 3 additional alternates) now are scheduled to travel to the Tacoma Dome on Friday, February 15th for the Washington State Championship Tournament.

Normally, the Washington State High School Wrestling Tournament "The WIAA Mat Classic" has 16 wrestler brackets, but now with the cancellation of the regional tournament, the contest will extend two full days with 32 wrestler brackets for every weight class.

The Scot's Head Coach, Brent Busby, was ecstatic. "Shorecrest will be sending its largest contingency of wrestlers to the Tacoma Dome ever! This is all so very exciting!"
