For anyone who is a fan of high school athletics the wrestling match between Shorewood and Shorecrest on Friday night was as exhilarating as you could ever imagine.

Shorewood, the host school, came in having won nine straight matches against their crosstown rivals in the Spartan Cup series.

Shorecrest, reigning team champions of the Shoreline Invitational tournament the two teams co-hosted just three weeks ago, trotted out a line-up loaded with six seniors and a star freshman.

The only disappointment on this night was that the hype hadn’t been grand enough.

The match began in the old-school way at 106 pounds. Shorecrest gambled and gave up a win by forfeit and the free six team points it provides by sliding star freshman Thomas Rhodes up to the 113 weight class to face Shorewood junior Kai Layton.

After testing each other out for most of the first period Layton bullied his way to the first takedown and a 2-0 lead. Rhodes responded with a quick escape to narrow the gap to 2-1 just before the round ended. Neither wrestler was able to score in the second period as Layton clung to the narrowest margin. In the third period, Rhodes quickly scored a second escape to tie it up before getting a takedown of his own on the way to a gritty 5-2 win and a 3-0 early lead in the team score for Shorecrest.

That first match set the tone for an extremely close and intense match. After Shorecrest senior Roman Shadduck dominated his way to a 17-2 tech fall win over his opponent at 120 pounds, Shorewood finally responded.

Shorewood scored their first team points thanks to a 9-4 victory by sophomore Aidan Jung at 126 pounds. In the next match, at 132 pounds, T-Bird junior Curt Tanaka faced off against Scot senior Kelvin Schmidt. Each wrestler struggled to score any points in the defensive battle as Tanaka eked out a tight 3-2 win.

At 138 pounds it was strength against length as Shorecrest junior Kaiya Conway, ranked #9 in the state, faced off against Shorewood junior Kody Carpenter.

Using his longer reach, Carpenter attacked Conway's legs with sweep singles as he built a 5-3 lead after the first round. In the second round it was all Conway, powering straight through Carpenter for a pair of takedowns and an 8-7 lead. In the third period, Carpenter started on bottom and struggled to get away.

After Carpenter fought his way to his feet, Conway refused to let go of the leg and tried to drive Carpenter back to the mat. Using Conway's momentum, Carpenter flipped him to his back for a takedown and three-point near fall for a 12-8 win. The huge victory gave Shorewood its first team lead at 9-8.

After a 14-4 win by Shorecrest’s Arthur Christopher at 145 pounds and a 5-2 win by Shorewood’s Devin Leach at 152 pounds, the two rivals stood tied at 12 team points apiece with six weight classes to go.

Shorewood moved sophomore Cole Becker up from his usual 152 pound weight class to wrestle against Shorecrest senior Yacob Benazouz at 160 pounds.

In the opening seconds of the match Benazouz lifted Becker high over his head and took him down straight to his back. Becker survived the early throw and escaped the period trailing 7-4.

Benazouz continued to use his size and strength advantage in the second period as Becker was only able to narrow the deficit by one point to 9-7. In the third period Becker got a quick escape to pull within one point.

Benazouz thwarted numerous attacks on his legs and appeared to be holding strong for the victory.

Becker never quit attacking and with under a minute left got a takedown and turned Benazouz to his back. As the seconds ticked down the two wrestlers gave every ounce of effort within their bodies, but Becker got the pin with just 7 seconds remaining.
Rising to his feet in victory Becker unleashed a primal scream towards his teammates that would have echoed through the gymnasium if it had not been drowned out by the eruption of the home crowd.

Sadly, the referee determined the yell by Becker was unsportsmanlike and penalized Shorewood one team point, leaving them with a 17-12 lead.

Shorecrest immediately answered in the 170 pound match as senior Ian Mortenson was in complete control while he secured a 10-1 win over Shorewood freshman Max Null.

After a pair of victories by Shorewood’s Tom Bert and Phil Ball at 182 and 195 pounds gave the home team a 26-16 lead Shorecrest had only two weights left to try and reclaim the Spartan Cup.

At 220 pounds, Shorecrest sent out senior Elyjah Schultz against Shorewood freshman Isaac Kabuchi. Kabuchi did everything he could to hold off Schultz, trailing just 3-1 when the first period ended. The superior strength and experience of Schultz won the day in the second period as Shultz was able to wear out his opponent and get the pin.

Fittingly, it was one final Shorecrest senior that put the final nail in Shorewood’s coffin. At 285 pounds, Shorecrest’s sixth and final senior David Rivera walked onto the mat and accepted a forfeit with the six team points that accompany it for a dramatic 28-26 Shorecrest win.

The score was the closest win by either team in over two decades.

Both teams wrestle next next Friday and Saturday at the district tournament. The tournament is being held at Edmonds-Woodway High School. Wrestling begins at 5pm on Friday the 1st and at 10am on Saturday the 2nd.

Shorewood wrestling had a tough night Tuesday but finished with a win

Thursday, January 24, 2019

It was a tough night Tuesday as the Shorewood wrestling team had a double dual against the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors and the Cedarcrest Wolves.

Hosted by Shorecrest High School, Shorewood faced off against Edmonds-Woodway first. It was all Warriors as Ed-way won a couple overtime matches, picked up several pins, and racked up a pair of forfeits for a massive lead. Shorewood finished the match with a pin by junior Cole Becker at 160 pounds, but it was far too little, far too late, as Edmonds-Woodway won 63-10.

In the second match it was the Thunderbirds against Cedarcrest. Cedarcrest is new to WesCo this season and will compete at the 2A level for the post season.

It was tough sledding early as Cedarcrest jumped out to a 11-0 lead after the first two weight classes. With the help of two forfeits and a huge pin by sophomore Sujinda Pongsaphang at 126 pounds, Shorewood took their first lead at 18-14.

With three matches left Shorewood held a 30-17 lead, needing just one more win to secure the team victory. Junior Devin Leach bumped up a weight class to 152 pounds and wrestled a great match. Leach got a takedown with just 5 seconds left in the first period for an early 2-0 lead. In the second period it was all Leach as he quickly got a reversal and put his opponent on his back for his 12th straight victory and a team win. Final score Shorewood 36 - Cedarcrest 26.

Shorewood wrestles next this Friday night, January 25th, at home against the rival Shorecrest Scots. Wrestling begins at 7pm.

Shorewood wrestling drove 135 miles on Friday to compete in the Willapa Harbor Invitational.

Hosted by Raymond Jr/Sr high school, the tournament featured 16 schools ranging from the 2B (smallest) to 4A (largest) classifications.

With 5 finalists and a total of ten wrestlers placing in the top 4, Shorewood brought home a team championship, outpacing second place Kennedy Catholic 184.5 to 161.5.

This was the first team tournament title for the Thunderbirds since 2013.

Leading the way for the Thunderbirds were junior Devin Leach at 145 pounds and senior Phil Ball at 182 pounds. Leach pinned all three of his opponents on the way to an individual title and is now on a 10 match winning streak since moving down to 145 pounds.

Ball moved down a weight class Saturday after wrestling 195 all season and also picked up an individual title. As the only senior in the varsity line-up Ball has provided leadership for the team all season and has now made the finals in four straight tournaments, winning three titles.

There would be no rally though as RJ Buchheit pinned his opponent at 160 pounds in the first period to start a 30-0 run by Shorewood to put the match beyond reach.

Shorecrest and Shorewood wrestling teams
take 1st and 2nd in Shoreline Invite

It was an historic day Saturday at Shorewood High School. For the first time in the 28 year history of the Shoreline Invite wrestling tournament the two Shoreline teams swept the top two team trophies.

Shorecrest, coached by Brent Busby, took home a team title and Shorewood, coached by Derek Norton, placed second. The win was extra special for the Scots of Shorecrest because it was their first tournament team title in 18 years.

Shorecrest went into the finals with a narrow lead over the host Thunderbirds. Scot Thomas Rhodes continued his impressive freshman season with a big pin at 106 to kick off the finals. At 113 pounds the two schools faced off against each other as senior Roman Shadduck came out on top for Shorecrest with a second round pin of Thunderbird Kai Layton.

The two teams faced off against each other in two other finals matches. At 132 pounds Shorecrest’s Kaiya Conway built a big lead before surviving being tossed to his back in the final seconds to best Shorewood’s Curt Tanaka 13-10.

In the following match, 138 pounds, Shorewood got their first champion of the day as Kody Carpenter won his second consecutive Shoreline Invite with an 11-4 decision over Kelvin Schmidt of Shorecrest.

Shorewood’s only other champion came at 145 pounds as Devin Leach won his third tournament in a row with a first round pin over his opponent from Ingraham high school.

Shorecrest finished off the tournament with a fourth Champion as senior David Rivera picked up his third pin of the day to secure the heavyweight title.

The two teams have to wait until the end of the season to face off against each other in a dual meet. Shorecrest returns to Shorewood on Friday, January 25th in the final match of the season for both teams. Shorecrest will be hoping to end another drought as they have lost nine straight matches to their cross-town rivals.

Shorewood wrestling results from Thursday at Mountlake Terrace

Friday, December 21, 2018

The Shorewood Thunderbirds went north to Mountlake Terrace High School Thursday night for a double dual against the Mountlake Terrace Hawks and the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats.

The evening began with the T-Birds facing off against Mountlake Terrace.

Devin Leach continued his season string with a dominant 17-4 decision to start the match at 152lbs. Shorewood’s Cole Becker followed Leach by pinning his opponent in the first round as Shorewood stormed ahead and never let the Hawks get close en route to a 49-21 victory.

In the second dual of the night Shorewood took on new WesCo member Archbishop Murphy. Shorewood again took a huge early lead, jumping to a 33-0. Freshman Isaac Kabuchi went up a weight class to wrestle his first varsity match in the heavyweight bout and pinned his opponent in just over a minute to cap the run. Murphy took the next two weights to close to 33-12, but would get no closer. Highlighting the match was junior Kody Carpenter pinning his opponent in just 25 seconds for the fastest pin of the night as Shorewood won 63-18.

Scots lose momentum in Marysville Getchell dual

Thomas Rhodes (Shorecrest) takes down Jacob Steele (Marysville-Getchell)

The Scots wrestled against Marysville Getchell Wednesday in the Shorecrest High School Athletic Facility.

The Marysville Chargers have a large squad (both Varsity and JV) and they didn’t leave anyone home! Despite giving up a forfeit at the 120lb spot, the Scot wrestlers held the score against the well stocked Chargers in the light weight and middle weight brackets.

Thomas Rhodes (106lbs), Roman Shadduck (113lbs), Kelvin Schmidt (138lbs), Trentyn Good (152lb) and Ian Mortensen (170lb) were able to get pins for 6 team points each, which kept the Scots in the fight.

However, once the heavy weight contests began, it was a downhill slide for the Scots. The Chargers handed the Scots four consecutive losses at the 182lb, 195lb, 220lb and 285lb weight classes, effectively shutting the door on the Highlanders. The Scots are now 4-2 on the dual season.

Kaiya Conway had the most intense match of the night. Only match up where each wrestler was a state participant.

The details of the individual matches are listed below:

106 - Thomas Rhodes (SC) pinned Jacob Steele (MGET)

Scot Wrestling sets new Dual Record, 4-1 on the Season

The Fighting Scots

The fighting Scots were able to come home with two more victories Tuesday night after back to back dual meets against the Meadowdale Mavericks and the Lynnwood Royals.

The first dual of the season against Mariner High School on November 29th was a loss of 45 to 20, but since then the Scots have gained some momentum and have pulled off four consecutive victories.

The first week of December the Scots defeated Cascade High School and Jackson High School (both 4A schools). The win against Cascade was a narrow point margin, the score was tied until the last match (Thomas Rhodes (106lbs) with a pin.

After the Lynnwood Classic Tournament on Saturday, December 15th the Scots picked up more momentum with a first ever placement of 2nd Place (First time ever bringing home a trophy from that venue).

Tuesday night, the Scots battled the Royals first and were able to secure an early lead simply because they brought more wrestlers. However, the Royals did represent themselves well despite giving up some weight classes.

Royals Wrestler Georgina Moraga defeated the Scot’s 160lb Captain Trentyn Good, which was an upset/payback from the Lynnwood Classic on Saturday where Good had defeated Moraga. Ultimately the Scots' superior numbers overwhelmed the point spread, which was punctuated by a final pin by heavy weight David Rivera over Royal Wrestler Brandon Hawk. The final score was Scots 57, Lynnwood 21.

The second contest against Meadowdale was more of a nail-biter for both teams. Light weights Thomas Rhodes and Roman Shadduck were able to secure pins early in the match, giving the Scots a slight lead, but the Mavericks answered with a couple pins of their own at the 120lb and 126lb weight classes.

The Scot middleweights traded victories and losses with the Mavs pretty evenly. 132lb Kaiya Conway-Yasumura was able to defeat the Mav's Jin Lee by a 4 point spread and 170lb Scot Wrestler Ian Mortensen put the Scots ahead with a pin against Daniel Sok. However, the Scots' Heavyweight David Rivera was caught on his back late into the 3rd round, allowing the Mavericks to even the score. The “Clutch” moment was when 195lb Scot Wrestler Max Uhm was able to collect 6 forfeit points, which gave the Scots a final victory of 39 to 36!

Shorecrest Wrestling places 2nd at Lynnwood Classic Tournament

Monday, December 17, 2018

As a team, Shorecrest wrestling won 2nd place
in an 11 school tournament

Photos and text by Sean Rhodes

The Shorecrest High School Wrestling Team set a new school record by placing 2nd out of 11 competing schools at the Annual Lynnwood High School Classic Tournament on Saturday, December 15, 2018.

3rd from left David Rivera (Senior), Champion, “Outstanding Wrestler”
won all his matches by pin.

In the history of the tournament, Shorecrest has never placed better than 4th in this early season contest. Among the schools competing were: Blaine (Champions), Shorecrest (2nd Place), Kamiak, Mariner, Meadowdale, Cascade, South Whidbey, Archbishop Murphy, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood and Anacortes.

The key to the increased success for Shorecrest Wrestling was a combination of factors. For one, there was a larger turnout of athletes this year (Shorecrest has a competition-level wrestler at almost every weight class this year). Also important was more intensive coaching earlier in the season.

#1 Kaiya Conway-Yasumura (132lb Champion)

Perhaps most importantly, the coaches are really stressing the importance of the “team dynamic” this year. Brent Busby (Shorecrest Head Coach) is constantly reminding his wrestlers to “think of their teammates” both on and off the mat. He often tells the wrestlers “A man can’t see if all he sees is himself!”

The call for unity seems to be paying off. Wrestling seems like an individual sport, and to a large extent it is. However, an individual wrestler cannot improve during the season unless his teammates are supporting him, challenging him, and holding him accountable for his actions.

#2 Thomas Rhodes (Freshman), 2nd Place

There is also an intangible “the whole is greater than the individual parts”. There are wrestlers on the roster who can only participate in JV or exhibition matches because of physical or developmental challenges resulting from Autism and other limiting conditions, but the “heart” they bring to the wrestling room benefits everyone on the team.

2nd from left Roman Shadduck (Senior), 3rd Place

Another factor is the addition of Zack Espil (Shorecrest Japanese language teacher and weight lifting coach) as a conditioning consultant this year.

2nd from left Arthur Christopher (Junior), 3rd Place

Shorecrest also added Coach Louis Uhm a few years ago. Uhm’s technical knowledge of the sport and no-nonsense communication approach with the wrestlers appears to be paying dividends as well.

Overall, the team seems to be hitting its stride!

Left, Ian Mortensen (Junior), 3rd Place

Individual results (top 3 placers) for Shorecrest High School at the Lynnwood Classic Tournament:

106lbs - Thomas Rhodes (Freshman), 2nd Place
113lbs - Roman Shadduck (Senior), 3rd Place
132lbs - Kaiya Conway- Yasumura (Junior), Champion
145lbs - Arthur Christopher (Junior), 3rd Place
152lbs - Trentyn Good (Junior) - 3rd place (not pictured)
170lbs - Ian Mortensen (Junior), 3rd Place
285lbs - David Rivera (Senior), Champion, “Outstanding Wrestler” - won all his matches by pin.

The Shorewood wrestling team began their dual meet season Tuesday night December 4, 2018 with a visit from Mariner.

The visiting Marauders put together a string of pins to build an early 30-0 lead. Freshman Luca Fenlason got the T-Birds on the scoreboard with a huge pin at 138 pounds in his first taste of varsity wrestling.

Kody Carpenter followed Luca’s pin with a dominating 15-0 tech fall victory at 145 pounds and Devin Leach won 13-6 at 152 pounds.

Mariner took the next two matches to extend their lead again. A 6-4 decision win by Shorewood’s Tom Bert at 182 pounds and a first round pin by senior Phil Ball at 195 closed the gap a bit but the early deficit was too much to overcome as Mariner won the match 54-23.

The Kellogg wrestling team finished the regular season on Thursday with a match against their cross-town rivals the Einstein Tigers.

Not only was Kellogg able to secure a 72-42 victory, they also snapped a seven year losing streak in the rivalry.

The Knights grabbed a big lead early with back to back to back pins from George Fernandez, Joseph Martinez and Thomas Rhodes in the first three weight classes. They would stretch their lead to 30-6 when Caleb Kassa pinned his opponent at the end of the first round at 108 pounds.

In the final match of the day Jessie Gingrich entered the varsity line-up for the first time this season won by pin before Kellogg picked up a couple forfeits in the last two weighs for the final margin.

Kellogg wrestling hosts Gateway and Evergreen MS in Double Dual meet

Saturday, March 17, 2018

The Kellogg wrestling team hosted Gateway and Evergreen Middle Schools on Thursday in a Double Dual meet.  Facing the Guardians from Gateway first the Knights got a huge win from 81 pounder George Fernandez, his first pin of the season, to grab the early lead. Kellogg would take six of the first seven weights as they built a 36-6 lead. Gateway tried to rally, thanks to incredible effort from Kellogg wrestlers, including Rowan Hinderer, who scored a late third period takedown to secure a tight 12-10 win at 133 pounds, Kellogg continued to pull away on their way to a 69-42 victory.

In their second match Kellogg faced reigning league champion Evergreen Middle School. With the help of another pin from George Fernandez and a pin from Thomas Rhodes at 93 pounds, his sixth pin in six matches, the Knights grabbed and early 12-6 lead.  Using a flurry of throws Evergreen took control of the match from that point on and ran away in the team score and handed Kellogg a 90-27 loss.
