Shorewood wrestling wins on Senior Night to finish second in WesCo South

Friday, January 26, 2018

Shorewood wrestling pulled out a late 45-32 victory over the Meadowdale Mavericks on Senior Night Thursday to secure a second place finish in WesCo South.

The match began at 170 pounds and Thunderbird senior Edward Soloman pinned his opponent to start the night off right. With two more pins at 195 and 220 pounds Shorewood had an early 18-0 lead. Meadowdale pulled within 8 at 24-16 by taking three of the next four weights. A tight 8-7 win by Curt Tanaka at 126 pounds and a first round pin by Kody Carpenter at 132 pounds stretched the lead to 33-16 for the Thunderbirds. The Mavericks then grabbed three straight wins to close the gap to 33-32. The T-birds would not be denied, winning at 160 pounds and closing the regular season with a pin by Hendrik Wirthwein at 170 pounds.

The two teams will see each other again next Saturday, Feb. 3rd, at the Disctrict Tournament hosted by Shorecrest High Sschool.

Edmonds-Woodway pins down Shorewood wrestlers Tuesday night

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

The Shorewood wrestling team went to Edmonds-Woodway Tuesday night with both teams undefeated in league and the Thunderbirds hoping to unseat the three time defending league champion Warriors.

The Warriors used a pair of pins and a decision to jump out to an early 15-0 lead in the team score.

The two teams traded wins over the next five weight classes as Shorewood narrowed their deficit to nine at 24-15 after a pin by Hendrick Wirthwein at 170 pounds.

That would be as close as the T-Birds would get as Edway dominated the upper weights, getting pins in three of the next four matches to pull away on their way to a 48-21 victory and a WesCo South championship.

Middle school wrestling - Einstein and Kellogg start their season with a win for Einsten

Middle School Wrestling
At Kellogg Middle School
Feb 15, 2017
Einstein 66 - Kellogg 44

Just before Shorecrest and Shorewood send their wrestlers down to the Tacoma Dome for the High School State Tournament the middle school wrestling season kicked off at Kellogg Middle School.

It was a little less polished than usual due to missing practice to snow days this year but there was no lack of heart. Kellogg stormed out to a commanding 23 point lead after the first four weight classes.

Rawan Schweedler and Carson Christensen pinned their cross-town rivals while Aiden Didio added a technical fall posting a 15-0 victory.

Einstein wrestlers clawed back into the match with three consecutive pins from Marcus Turner, Josh Fahey, and Junior Shirai bringing the score to 18-23 with Kellogg in the lead.

Trading of forfeits between the teams from 123 lbs up to 148 pounds left the match at 36-35, Einstein gaining a slight edge.

Two more victories over Einstein wrestlers wasn't enough to hold off Einstein's anchor weights.  Pins from 218 pounder Taejin Thongdee and 248 pounder Tom Bert sealed the victory for the Tigers.

To start the night off the Meridian Park Elementary School Wrestling Rhinos put on an exhibition for the crowd. Coached by PE teacher Matt Alford, the little grapplers showed how much they have learned.

The dual meet started off with a rematch of the 2017 Shoreline Invite finals. Shorecrest's Kaiya Conway controlled Kody Carpenter for most of the match before getting reversed to his back and almost giving up a pin deep into the third round. His lead held and he avoided the pin to stay a perfect 3-0 versus Shorewood wrestlers on the season.

The T-Birds responded with a quick first round pin from Curt Tanaka over Roman Shadduck. Not to be outdone, the Scots responded with a third round pin from Trentyn Good over Richard Street.

From there on it was all T-Birds as the west side grapplers ripped off a technical fall and seven straight pins to seal the match.

The Spartan Cup will stay in the trophy case at Shorewood for another year with the T-Birds beating the Scots 59-21.

Mountlake Terrace 42, Shorewood 36

When Shorewood hosted Mountlake Terrace Thursday night, the match did not disappoint. The match started with the 170-pound weight class where Esdras Valladares got things started for the T-Birds with a second round pin.

Mountlake Terrace responded with pins at 182 and 195 pounds before the teams traded forfeit points. The match was back and forth on the team score. At 120 pounds, the Hawks' Alex Williams battled back from a five-point deficit before Shorewood's Curt Tanaka scored a triple overtime victory.
