Shorewood wrestlers open season with a loss to Monroe

Thursday, December 1, 2016

Shorewood's grapplers travelled out to Monroe HS to take on the Bearcats to open their 2016--17 season.  Despite some early success the Bearcat's depth and experience were too much for the Thunderbirds.

Senior captain Elias Thorne led the way for the Thunderbirds pinning Monroe's Brock Rice less than a minute into the third round.

Monroe put up 54 points to Shorewood's 34, sending the T-birds home to regroup before they head to Edmonds Woodway on Saturday for the Edmonds Invite. Wrestling starts Saturday morning at 9:00am.

With the Rain comes Youth Wrestling Season - with practices in Shoreline

Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Team photo, Rhinos – 2013

It’s getting colder, darker and wetter in Shoreline. This is nature’s way of letting Shoreline area families know that it is time for the start of the indoor sports seasons.

This year, when you think of indoor sports – think Wrestling! Youth wrestling is a great sport because it accommodates a large variety of body sizes and shapes (wrestlers ages 5 through ages 14 have weight classes within a 5 pound range).

Like martial arts and other sports, it also teaches self-discipline and work ethic. Wrestling is an individual sport where one ultimately competes alone, but it is also a team sport because you need teammates to practice with. This “iron sharpens iron” phenomenon ultimately teaches self-reliance as well as teamwork.

Shoreline area high schools have not traditionally had feeder programs for the sport of wrestling, but the Wrestling Rhinos (a youth wrestling club originating in 1974) are hoping to change that.

Although the Rhinos have only held practices at Edmonds Woodway High School in years past, they now offer wrestling practices at Einstein Middle School in Shoreline.

The Einstein Middle School practices will be offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm – 7:30pm starting October 17 and continuing through January.

In addition, the Rhinos are trying something new this year by working directly with an elementary school in the Shoreline School District.

Starting November 7 and continuing through January 18, there will be an after school wrestling practice at Meridian Park Elementary School with PE teacher and Coach Matt Alford. Every child has different interests and aptitudes, but if your child wants to get tough on a wrestling mat, here is a great opportunity.

Einstein champions and fans

The Einstein wrestling team capped off a great season by winning a district title at the end of season tournament on Tuesday.

The Champion Tigers scored 280 points to edge out 2nd place Meadowdale by 20 points. The team title is the first in the career of head coach Derek Norton, who is himself an Einstein alumnus. Coach Norton came home to take over his childhood team in 2001 and has come close to a title several times, including a 2nd place team finish last season.

Einstein placed 13 wrestlers in the top three across the eighteen weight classes they participated in.

Leading the way for the Tigers were District Champions Josh Fahey, Kody Carpenter, Curt Tanaka, Devin Leach, Deshawn Alexander, and Luke Hohenstein.

In addition to the 6 champions, Einstein wrestlers Austin Newman, Ryan Araujo, Terrill Martinez, and Taejin Thongdee placed 2nd, while Jordan Sims, Norman Bada, and Voix Bull placed 3rd.

For Kody Carpenter and Devin Leach this was the second time they have taken home district titles.

Curt Tanaka, Devin Leach, and Deshawn Alexander each finished the season undefeated.

A packed house for the Einstein - Kellogg wrestling match

Friday, March 25, 2016

It was a packed house Thursday as the Einstein Tigers hosted the Kellogg Knights in the final match of the regular season.

Einstein got off to a good start with 7th graders Josh Fahey and Connor McGarey pinning their opponents at 88 and 93lbs for a 12-4 team lead.

Kellogg took the next two weights and held a 16-12 lead going into the much anticipated match at 108lbs between reigning District Champion Kody Carpenter of Einstein and undefeated Knight Kaiya Conway. Both wrestlers struggled to get any offense on their feet. Conway secured the first takedown with twenty seconds left in the first period and quickly put turned Carpenter over with a three-quarter nelson for the pin and a 10 point Kellogg lead.

At 113lbs Tiger Ian Paulson stepped into the varsity line-up for only the second time all season and gutted out a tough three round 16-9 decision. Sparked by Paulson's win the Tigers got four pins in a row from Curt Tanaka, Devin Leach, Austin Newman, and Ryan Araujo for a 39-22 lead. That quartet has been dominant all season and have a combined record of 31-2 with 26 pins.

Einstein would widen their lead to 54-34 thanks to a huge pin by Deshawn Alexander, who bumped up to 167lbs, and a narrow 5-3 victory from Taejin Thongdee at 178lbs. Alexander, along with teammates Curt Tanaka, Devin Leach, and Terrill Martinez, finished the regular season undefeated.

A pin by Tom Bert at 218lbs and Luke Hohenstein receiving a forfeit at 278lbs gave Einstein the final score victory of 66-40.  This is the third year in a row the Tigers have defeated their rivals from the east side.

Einstein wrestles next on Tuesday, March 29th, in the Varsity Tournament hosted by Jackson High School. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 4pm.

Einstein wrestling 3-15-16

Wednesday, March 16, 2016

It was a humbling afternoon on Tuesday as the Einstein Tigers lost decisively to the Meadowdale Vikings 75-35.

The Tigers had been riding high after an upset of Evergreen last week, but came out flat and never held a lead. After a pair of pins from Curt Tanaka, up a weight class at 118 pounds, and Devin Leach at 123 pounds, Einstein pulled to within nine points at 21-30.

Einstein never got any closer as Meadowdale closed the match out with a 27-3 run across the final 6 weight classes.

A bright spot for the Tigers was the continued dominance of Terrill Martinez. Martinez, a first year wrestler with a Jujitsu background, defeated his opponent 17-1 to keep his undefeated season alive and has now won his last four matches by a combined score of 62-5.

Einstein wrestles next on Thursday, March 17th at home against Eisenhower.

Einstein wrestling scores huge victory - first team to defeat Evergreen in 14 years

Friday, March 11, 2016

The Einstein boys in blue faced off against Evergreen Middle School of Everett on Thursday. The Evergreen Timberwolves not only edged out the Einstein Tigers for a league title last season but they were also riding a 14-year winning streak in dual meets.

The two teams traded pins during the first five matches and Einstein found itself trailing 12-18. At 108 pounds, Tiger Kody Carpenter used a perfectly executed suicide cradle to pin his opponent in the first round and tie the team score.

In the next match, 113 pound wrestler Curt Tanaka continued his perfect season by taking his opponent straight from his feet to his back. The pin by Tanaka gave Einstein its first lead of the afternoon, 24-18.

The Timberwolves would tie the score again with a pin of their own at 118 pounds before undefeated Einstein wrestler Devin Leach took the mat. Leach improved to 5-0, all by pins, on the year and kept his unblemished middle school career intact with a 37 second pin.

Leach's pin, as well as pins by fellow undefeated Tigers Ryan Araujo at 128 pounds and Austin Newman at 133 pounds, gave Einstein a 42-24 cushion.

When 7th grader Taejin Thongdee picked up his third pin in his last three matches at 178 pounds it capped a 52-12 run and gave the Tigers an insurmountable 64-30 lead.

The final score of 64-54 made Einstein the first team to defeat Evergreen in 14 years and is the first time Coach Derek Norton has ever defeated them.

Shorecrest hosted 2A Region 3 wrestling championship tournament

Shorecrest High School hosted the 2A Region 3 Wrestling Championship Tournament last Saturday, February 13. Hosting the tournament was a great opportunity to support the local wrestling community and to show the region the pride Shorecrest has in its recently constructed athletic facility.
The wrestlers who qualified at this tournament will go on to compete at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday, February 20 in the Washington State High School Championship Tournament.

Owen Donnelly, a Shorecrest High School Senior, was the champion in the 160lb bracket and will be the sole representative for the Scots in Tacoma next weekend. Other Shorecrest wrestlers who competed in the regional tournament included Jack Barrie, Connor Block, Chandler Keopanya, Kelvin Schmidt, and Spencer Kennedy.

Coach Brent Busby stated that his team has worked very hard all year (even over Christmas break) and showed great improvement over the course of the season. Each consecutive dual tournament resulted in more points scored than in the prior tournament. In comparison to last year, there were also more individual wins. Coach Busby was also very grateful for the parent support in getting wrestlers to where they needed to be and also in helping to organize tournaments.

Both Assistant Coach Officer and Assistant Coach Moraguez competed as wrestlers for Shorecrest HS in previous years. They both wrestled in the 2A Regional tournament, but did not qualify for the state tournament in Tacoma. Both are committed to helping other Shorecrest wrestlers achieve that goal.

The Shorecrest team is a young squad, with only three returning seniors. One of the Seniors, Luke Lotawa, suffered a severe injury with only three weeks remaining in the post season. Lotawa was one of the wrestling team’s leaders this year and helped to train the younger athletes. Lotawa invested a lot of effort since middle school attempting to become a state placer. Unfortunately, his hopes did not materialize after he tore his ACL.

Busby stepped into the coaching position at Shorecrest this year at a low point in the school’s wrestling program. The Scots' wrestling team has seen three coaches come and go over the last six years and, understandably, has not seen a lot of success due to inconsistent leadership.

Busby feels that with improvements he has already seen this year, hard work from his assistant coaches (Bryan Officer and Ricky Moraguez), as well as solid prospects moving up from Kellogg Junior High School, there is increasing optimism for the Shorecrest wrestling program.

Growing community support and involvement for the sport of wrestling in the Shoreline area will also be critical for the future success of Shorecrest wrestling. To quote Justin Bieber, “All grass starts out brown. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, it’s green where you water it”.

Senior night for Shorewood wrestling as they take down the Meadowdale Mavericks 43-25

Thursday, January 28, 2016

It was Senior Night at the Shorewood gymnasium as the Thunderbird wrestling team hosted the Meadowdale Mavericks Thursday. The match began at 160 pounds with Shorewood's freshman Philip Ball.

Although he lost, Ball set the tone for his team as he never stopped fighting in a close 15-12 decision.

After another tough loss at 170 pounds Shorewood faced an early 7-0 deficit. Junior Troy Beach, dropping down to the 182lb weight class for the first time this season, used four takedowns as he secured the T-Birds first win of the night 14-5.

Meadowdale's Liam Ball, ranked #7 in the state, picked up a pin at 195lbs to give the Mavericks a 13-4 lead. Two matches later Thunderbird Senior captian Japhet Valladares dominated his opponent for a pin in just 1 minute 12 seconds to give Shorewood their first lead of the night at 16-13.

Shorewood Wrestling results 1/7

The Shorewood wrestling team swept a pair of matches Thursday night against Cedarcrest and Mount Vernon. The double dual, hosted at Monroe High School, began with the Thunderbirds facing off against the Red Hawks of Cedarcrest.

Junior Troy Halloway-Beach opened the event in the 195lb match. After falling behind 4-0 in the first period Halloway-Beach rallied to tie the score in the 2nd before pinning his opponent at the 3:44 mark.

By the time senior T-Bird Rhaye Samson earned his team-leading 14th win of the season by pinning his opponent in just 29 seconds, Shorewood had built a 30-0 team lead. Cedarcrest would win two of the next three weights, but the rally was short lived. A pair of one point victories by Shorewood's Elias Thorne at 138lbs and Fidel Chishungu at 145lbs gave the T-Birds an insurmountable 42-9 advantage.

In the final match of the dual freshman Phil Ball picked up his first varsity pin of the season at the 2:12 mark for a final team score of 60-15.

Shorewood's second match of the night was a rematch against Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon, hoping to avenge a 39-36 loss on December 16th, came out strong with two first round pins at the 220 and 285 pound weight classes. Shorewood relied on superior team depth and close victories to quickly end all hope for their opponent as they pulled away for a 54-15 victory. The win was Shorewood's 4th victory in a row.

Shorewood wrestles next this Saturday, January 10, at the Shoreline Invitational at Shorecrest High School. The first round of wrestling begins at 8:30am and finals are estimated for 2:30.
