Poetry and Prose Circle

Sunday, November 29, 2020

Poet Rose Ramm Gamble

Poetry and Prose Circle
with Rose Ramm Gamble
Tuesday, December 1, 6:30-8:30pm
For adults and teens

Register: https://kcls.bibliocommons.com/events/5f8225549aadc72f0056ac3f (If necessary copy the link and paste it into your browser)

Rose Ramm Gamble is a corn-fed Nebraska revolutionary. A veteran of the Midwest punk scene and wannabe mystic of Catholic heritage, her dogma descends mostly from The Beatles lyrics.

When Rose stomps out her poetry, it's a shaman journey through social justice covens, parochial school studios, redneck trailer parks, therapy couches, mosh pits and briars of shiny black berries, ripe for the picking.

In the Poetry and Prose Feedback Circle, we will spark ideas using random or collected word lists as starting points for writing. Activities will include studying sample poetry, gathering word lists, and assembling word arrangements that provoke and unblock the flow of ideas.

We will have the option of sharing our workshop writing with the group, and we will also have an opportunity to receive feedback on this or another piece of writing that we bring. I

In collaboration with Redmond Association of Spokenword. Sponsored by the Friends of the Redmond Library.

Gloria Nagler to teach class on macro photography for the Audubon Society

Sunday, September 13, 2020

Every day's a beautiful day when you're a Yellow Jacket, thought Yvette,

not without a little satisfaction. Took Yvette’s portrait at the community garden the other day.

--Gloria Z Nagler

Close-up critters in the time of COVID: Tips on bringing home better macro shots of our fellow critters and other garden denizens with Gloria Z. Nagler

Thursday, September 24, 7:00-8:30pm
Register here

$15 sliding scale fee; pay what you can*
Online registration closes the afternoon of the class. Please complete registration in advance.

Strolling through urban gardens, noticing, and then capturing photographs of our colorful insects and blossoms, is a grand way to spend time during this pandemic. Gardens are rarely crowded and generally peaceful places to be. Macro photography is the art of making photographs of tiny creatures and blossoms that are the same size as the subject is in the real world (1:1 ratio is the goal).

My target audience for this class is beginners and near-beginners. We will talk about setting up your camera for macro photography, potential subjects, how you decide what to include in the frame, and more. This is not a hyper–technical class: not about how cameras work, but about how to capture better macro photographs.

* If you are unable to pay a fee, please see instructions on the Classes page on our website (seattleaudubon.org) on how to request a fee waiver +before+ purchasing a ticket. Though the first couple of online classes were offered for free (with donation suggested), classes are now offered with a ticket price or with a pre-arranged fee waiver or sliding scale option.

These free workshops are taught by college instructors - so it's like getting a free college writing class!

Parking is free after 4pm in every lot on campus. The college is located at 16101 Greenwood Ave N. The events are in the library (free wifi) which is in the 4000 building.
We would love to see our wonderful community members at these free workshops!

There are three: November 6, November 13, November 20 - all on Wednesdays in the early evening.

Gary Parks
Simple Prompts to Start a Story
Wednesday November 6th 5:30pm (Room 4202 in the library)
This workshop will involve you in fiction methods like writing voice, character development, and others to help you start your novel or story (or nurture one already started). Some easy techniques will be discussed that will let you get to the root of what your story is really about.

Instructor Gary Parks grew up in western Montana and left at 18 to pursue an education and teaching career. Teaching interests include pre-transfer and transfer composition, research writing, short story writing, fiction studies, and Irish study abroad. Short stories have appeared in Portland Review, Black Warrior Review, Grey's Sporting Journal, Alaska Quarterly, Spindrift, and others.

Michael Overa
Eavesdropping on Our Characters
Wednesday November 13 5:30pm (Room 4202 in the library)
The art of natural language in a novel’s dialogue can suspend a reader’s belief and make them feel like they are overhearing an important conversation.
Michael Overa teaches this workshop in the style of Don DeLillo’s intimate and real sounding dialogue conversations.

With a Bachelors in Creative Writing and a MFA in Creative Writing, Michael Overa has a solid academic background in fiction writing. His award winning work can be found in over 30 publications including two short story collections, This Endless Road and The Filled In Spaces.

Vince Barnes
Describing Characters
Wednesday November 20 6:00pm (Room 4202 in the library)
Fleshing out the characters in your mind can be so challenging, but readers often say that the characters are the reason they read a story. Write memorable, unique characters with the skills you will learn in this workshop.  Avoid cliché, tropes, and stereotypes that objectify or marginalize certain readers.

Having been repeatedly published in the Seattle Times, Vince Barnes is known for his quick witted prose and meaningful short pieces. Barnes teaches English as a Second Language at Shoreline Community College and has his Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Washington.
