Small explosive device found at play area in Woodway

Wednesday, September 22, 2021

Tuesday morning, September 20, 2021 at approximately 9:35am, the Public Works crew in Woodway found a small explosive device in the John Bush play area near Town Hall.

The City alerted the Edmonds Police Department, which provides police services to the Town by contract. The police evacuated Town Hall and nearby residences while they investigated.

The Everett Bomb Squad was called in to remove the device.

There was some vandalism to the play area.

Thankfully, there were no injuries. An adjacent neighbor reported hearing a “loud and frightening explosion” at approximately 1:30am, but they did not call 911. The police did not find any other suspicious devices in the area.

The investigation is open.

Mayor Mike Quinn reminded residents: "if you see or hear anything suspicious, please call 911."

The deeply forested Town of Woodway, located between the Richmond Beach neighborhood and the City of Edmonds, is using a federal grant to hire summer staff to clear hazardous trees from its streets.

Two new Public Works summer employees are helping the town get caught up on maintenance that has been delayed as a result of various COVID-related restrictions.

Terrance Bryant, the department director, is currently overseeing a large hazardous tree removal project.

According to Mayor Mike Quinn,

At several locations throughout Town, we are removing dead, dying, or hazardous trees. By removing these trees, we are reducing the likelihood of winter power outages, fires, and danger to pedestrians, vehicles and property.

At the January 4, 2021 Town Council meeting, the Council unanimously selected Councilmember Mike Quinn to serve as Mayor, following the retirement of former Mayor Carla Nichols.

“I am honored that my colleagues have expressed their faith in me to continue the prudent leadership of the Town,” he said. Mayor Quinn has long been an active member of the community, having served three terms on the Town Council.

Mike grew up locally and attended Blanchet High School and Seattle Pacific University, majoring in Finance. He met his wife of 35 years at Blanchet and has 4 grown daughters. In his spare time, Mike enjoys outdoor activities including golfing, skiing, and hiking. Additionally, he has a passion for beekeeping – keeping several hives locally.

Mayor Quinn recently retired after a 25-year career at Microsoft Corporation, having held various positions across the company in Worldwide Sales Leadership, Global Supply Chain Operations, Strategic Planning, and Finance roles. Most recently, Mike served as Vice President of Sales, leading and managing one of Microsoft's top Global Customers.

Woodway Mayor to retire January 4, 2021

Tuesday, December 22, 2020

Carla Nichols will retire as
Mayor of Woodway
Earlier this month, Woodway Mayor Carla Nichols announced that she will be retiring as mayor as of January 4, 2021.

Mayor Nichols started her Woodway career as a council member in 1996. She was elected mayor in 2001.

In her 25 years of service to the Town, she has led the Town through significant changes, including a 45% increase in the Town’s population, the building of a new Town Hall, and significant additions to the Town’s park lands, largely as a result of her ability to secure grants.

She also has been a regional leader, through participation on several county and regional boards.

“There have been so many challenges that we’ve overcome and opportunities that we would not have been able to take advantage of without her creativity, commitment and hard work,” said Woodway Mayor Pro Tem Mike Quinn.

"These years of service have been rewarding, always challenging and never dull. Now my five grandchildren and my husband, Dean, will be the primary focus for my life,” she said.

But always passionate about the quiet ambiance of the Town, she added, “The greatest asset that Woodway has is beautiful land. That is our primary resource, so let’s always preserve it.”

Woodway is a small town in Snohomish county, just north of Richmond Beach. It sits directly above Point Wells and has been working closely with Shoreline on issues of common interest regarding the proposed major development of that site.
