Watch your driving in LFP - more deer on the road

Friday, August 7, 2020

Story and photos by Ed Weum

While out for a late afternoon walk on Wednesday I came upon a doe crossing 185th at 30th Ave NE.

I had stopped momentarily at the intersection when out from some bushes popped this deer no more than 10 feet from me.

It appeared to have had come from the direction of Lyon Creek watershed. We measured each other up briefly and then she trotted away from me while I fumbled for my phone.

We have lived here since 1978 and have never seen a deer this close to home.

Tasty little bite

Tuesday, August 4, 2020

This bunny likes the purple wildflowers. I've watched bunnies carefully nibbling their way through what appears to be weeds growing through a crack in cement. They were not eating the tall weeds but carefully finding something close to the ground.

Doe, a deer, a female deer, and two little Bambis stroll along the side of the road in Lake Forest Park.

It's going to be a terrible shock to the animals when we all get outside again.

Did I mention they walked through ray, a drop of golden sun?

There's always one that has to explore the foliage

I forget how pretty Lake Forest Park is until something like these photos reminds me. And the Bambis are pretty darn cute too.

Thanks to Doug Gochanour for these delightful photos.

Nap time for little bunny

Nap Time, copyright Marc Weinberg

In our yard there is no shortage of rabbits. This little one comes within a few feet of us and feels comfortable to take a snooze in the shade of a fern. This is not a one off moment.  It has happened many times.

Bird house bandits

Monday, July 6, 2020

Marc Weinberg found an old bird house and decided to put it up on a tree in his back yard.

He was hoping that birds would move in.

Instead he was treated to a trio of rambunctious squirrels.

They skittered around his back yard for a couple of days, and then moved on to entertain someone else.

Checking out the blueberries

Saturday, June 20, 2020

Photo copyright Marc Weinberg

It always interests me to see what the bunnies are eating. The traditional munch through the vegetable garden, as one reader cheerfully reported.

I watched one spend a long time nibbling on the grass and white clover that had grown up through the crack in a sidewalk. It was right next to a big patch of red clover and a large bed of strawberries.

Now this one is checking out the blueberries. If you see a bunny with blue stains around its mouth, you'll know where it has been.

Wisdom and advice from Wabbit Tails

Saturday, May 23, 2020

Wayne Pridemore and his backyard bunny dispense wisdom and advice.

However, Wayne says "More and more each day I find myself being Elmer Fudd. What's up Doc?"

All I can come up with is Spike Jones. If you don't know who he is, don't bother looking him up. I wish I could get his voice out of my head.

Costco bird seed is popular with everyone, even Mrs. Douglas Squirrel

I have had to relegate grey squirrels to the No Longer Socially Acceptable file under Things Loved in Childhood - along with ivy, scotch broom, dandelions, morning glory and a bunch of other things.

It is heartening, through, to see how many native Douglas Squirrels are frequenting area neighborhoods and making friends with residents in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

Raspberries and chipmunks

Tuesday, May 19, 2020

Native chipmunks have mostly been pushed to the fringes by invasive species like grey squirrels. They are around but it's a rare treat to see them.

Apparently the rare treat of raspberries is the way to win their hearts and get them to hold still for a photo!

This little guy lives in the woods in Innis Arden.
