Deer touring Ridgecrest - last seen in Northcrest Park

Tuesday, May 12, 2020

Screenshot from video of deer in Ridgecrest
Video by Patty Hale

If your browser will not allow you to see the video, go to Facebook and the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association.

The Lake Forest Park deer family -  A buck, a doe and a set of last years fawns - have managed to get safely across 15th NE and have been touring Ridgecrest.

Ridgecrest resident Patty Hale got excellent footage of them when they browsed through her yard early Monday morning.

These area residents (dad, mom and set of 1 year old twins) came into my yard this morning at about 7:45am for a short visit. Since they did not have face masks, they followed 6 foot physical distancing rule and did not get too close to me.
I had heard that this family was making the rounds in the neighborhood. So glad I was out doing early garden chores and had my phone with me.
I live in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood on 8th Ave NE and my yard abuts Northcrest Park on 2 sides. My property has been registered with Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife as a Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary for 35 years. I normally see lots of birds, some raccoons, an opossum or two and an occasional coyote - but this was a first!

Correction - last seen in Northcrest Park in Shoreline. Northacres Park is in north Seattle.

Deer come to visit
Photo submitted by reader

"We live on the border of Shoreline / Lake Forest Park. We've seen deer for the past two years but they were little. This morning, May 5, 2020 at 5:30am we had an amazing visit from five deer.

"Daddy is in the next yard eating my neighbor's Asian Pear tree. The other four are in our yard."

Deer in North City

This is the second photo I've received of this family group this week. They are obviously part of the 'happy the humans are gone' contingent who are partying in the woods!

I don't know what the deer population is but I know there are two groups. This one ranges from Lake Forest Park to I-5 and the other lives in The Highlands and wanders the streets of Innis Arden and areas inbetween, munching tulips as they go.

What's unusual is to see this entire herd out together. All previous sighting have been single animals.

Keep your cameras at the ready. I'm still waiting for bears. Your warning will be your dogs, who will go into a complete, barking frenzy like nothing you've ever heard before.

Wild creatures among us: Bobcats

Bobcat in Lake Forest Park
By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Phillippa Kassover

I've known for years that there were bobcats in our area.

One of my neighbors in north central Shoreline had one on her deck after a snowstorm 20 years ago - but it took me years to identify the big cat was that was freaking out her cats as a bobcat.

Another sighting ten years later in Innis Arden - no pictures there either but the resident correctly identified the cat in the tree as a bobcat.

Distinctive and beautiful markings on ears, short white flag tail (striped on the top side),
very big paws, and much bigger than even the biggest house cat

Now, with all the humans inside and jokes about animals partying in the streets - finally a photo of a local bobcat.

Not just a photo, but Phillippa Kassover was able to do an entire photo shoot as a large and calm bobcat browsed her yard in Lake Forest Park.

Spots like a leopard. Muscular body. Long legs.
About twice the size of the biggest housecat.

It can be disorienting to see them. They look like housecats but they are just too big. The musculature is different too. Heavy shoulders, long strong legs. Most people don't get the extended and close up view that Phillippa did.

Fabulous design on the ears and what looks like
a dark stripe along the spine.

In 2015, Aaron Wirsing, Assistant Professor, School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at the University of Washington, told me:

I suspect that your neighbor spied a bobcat (Lynx rufus). Bobcats are closely related to lynx but are able to use a wide variety of habitats, including city suburbs. They typically weigh about 25 pounds and have paws that are about twice the size of those of a domestic cat.

I’ve been informed that there are quite a few bobcats in the greater Seattle area. Congratulations to your neighbor on a neat sighting, and thanks for the inquiry!

Now all I need is a bear.

Photo: Otter with mouth full

Sunday, December 22, 2019

This Ronald Bog otter is not even concerned about the proximity of the photographer - he just keeps munching on the fish he caught.

He either thinks the photog is a friend or figures he can take him in a fair fight, but he's calm, relaxed and chowing down on his fish.

Fresh water otters are apparently in every stream and body of water in the area, but they are normally very elusive and only people who live at water's edge ever get to see them.
