WeatherWatcher: Air Stagnation Advisory, Dense Fog Advisory

Sunday, January 23, 2022

Fog looking west on N 190th St across Meridian Ave N, January 23, 2022.
Photo by Carl Dinse
The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a Dense Fog Advisory and an Air Stagnation Advisory. The Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until Noon PST Monday, and the Air Stagnation Advisory is in effect until Noon PST Wednesday.

A strong high pressure system over the Northwest has created a very strong temperature inversion starting at about 800 feet in elevation. Temperatures below the 800 foot level are in the mid-upper 30's with temperatures above that level in the mid 50's.

Visibility in the fog could be a quarter mile or less at times. It is strongly recommended to drive with your headlights on in the fog, so that you are visible to other drivers. Drive with caution especially near intersections.

Air Stagnation allows for pollution to build up, causing poor air quality. We are being asked to delay outdoor burning, and to limit any residential wood burning devices, if possible, until conditions improve.

Currently there are no burn bans and air quality remains good in King County. You can check current conditions and info on any air quality burn bans at the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency website.

Forecast: No sign of any rain for the entire work week. Our next chance appears to be Saturday. In the meantime, expect foggy days, although some days the fog might burn off in the afternoons to sunny skies with temperatures peaking in the mid 40's and overnight lows in the 30's. Thursday and Friday have the biggest chance of warming up enough to clear the fog.

Long Range: Long range models have been hinting at an active and cooler weather pattern near the beginning of February. There are also hints that we could have another brush of lowland snow after we start the month. Keep the snow gear nearby just in case.

It was 51 degrees in Shoreline Thursday and these flowers thought that meant Spring so they bloomed. Now we'll probably get a blizzard in April.

Oh well, they're very pretty now.

Some passes will open Sunday - WSU cancels classes Monday and Tuesday

Sunday, January 9, 2022

Photo courtesy WSDOT

Update: Sunday, January 9, 2022- 4:00pm
Snoqualmie & Blewett passes will reopen at 5 p.m. today with a 45 mph speed limit & traction tires advised. Priority is to get freight traffic moving; recreational/general traffic should continue to delay travel.
~~~~
WSDOT made good progress clearing Snoqualmie, Stevens, White and Blewett passes on Saturday.
There’s still a lot of work to go, but Snoqualmie and Blewett will reopen sometime Sunday. It will take longer to get Stevens and White reopened.
Snoqualmie: Using plows, blowers, and graders, they continue to clear snow and make sure hillsides are stable from earlier avalanche concerns. They are also clearing catch basins to allow for drainage from melting snow & rain
One of the tow plows - Plowie McPlow Plow - was moved from Spokane to Snoqualmie Pass to assist with the work. They are on track to reopen on Sunday. They will have a better sense for time late Sunday morning.
Blewett: Avalanche control was successful and crews continue to use a blower and plows to clear the highway. Davenport-based crews sent a blower to help. They are optimistic Blewett will open Sunday and will have a better sense for timing late Sunday AM
Stevens: Several snow slides produced areas of snow that stand 30-35 feet tall. One lane is open to allow crews further access for avalanche control and clearing work. Snow has built up in rare locations on the mountain and they may do avalanche control from a helicopter to knock those hazards down Monday.
While not Stevens Pass, US 2 Tumwater Canyon east of the pass affects their ability to open Stevens. There have been 208 snow slides in Tumwater Canyon - about 25 slides per mile.
They continue to monitor conditions and work where it is safe to do so to get this stretch of highway open. At this time, it is unlikely Stevens Pass or Tumwater Canyon will reopen before Tuesday
White: While there is no remaining avalanche concern, there is still a substantial amount of snow and debris, including trees, rocks, etc., to remove. Crews have brought in an excavator to help but it is unlikely White Pass will open before Monday
WSDOT says "This has been a long, tough process and again, we appreciate everyone's patience while our crews work as fast and hard as they safely can to reopen. We will have another update Sunday morning."
Washington State University - Pullman
In the meantime, with so many of their students unable to get to school, the WSU Pullman campus will cancel classes on Monday, January 10 and Tuesday, January 11, 2022 to allow students time to return to Pullman safely following recent highway closures.
All other WSU Pullman facilities and operations will be open normal business hours on Monday and Tuesday.
WSDOT: Mountain passes closed
Friday, January 7, 2022
A mountain road completely covered with snow; an overpass crossing the road is also white with snow.
Conditions in the passes. Photo courtesy WSDOT
As of Thursday evening, January 6, 2022, Snoqualmie, Stevens, White, and Blewett passes remain closed.
Because of the conditions and amount of work needed to safely re-open, our passes will likely remain closed until Sunday.
Conditions are too dangerous for crews to be in the pass areas. Snow and debris continue to slide onto the highways. Crews are working in areas where it is safe to plow, clear catch basins and do other work to have those areas ready when we can reopen
More snow and possibly rain is in the forecast for the passes overnight. This will only increase the avalanche danger. If it is safe to do so, we will spend all day Friday addressing avalanche issues to create a safe work zone.
Once avalanche work is done, we will spend Saturday clearing the areas, including plowing and treating roads, removing snow/ice from signs, clearing trees and debris from the road and clearing catch basins for drainage.
In lowlands, heavy rain in several areas of the state will increase flood and washout danger. Several rivers are under advisories with risks to increase as snow melt continues. There is high danger of downed trees due to saturated soil, heavy snow and rain.
In Eastern WA, rain/flooding is a concern as is snow and strong winds, including in the Palouse. Blowing and drifting snow produce low visibility and challenging conditions leading to road closures and possibly power outages
We recognize the importance of these corridors but nothing is more important than the safety of our crews and the public. We are prepared to move in once it is safe, and we appreciate your patience during this challenging situation.
Icicle contenders - new category - best photography
When these photos came in today, it was necessary to create a new category: Best photography.
I thought of something like "raindrops on roses and icicles on rhodies" but it didn't scan and now I'm not sure it's a rhodie, so I'll just let you admire the photo.
Gustavo Glusman went for a night scene with his lone icicle reflecting Christmas lights.
It's snowing north and south of us but the temperatures are staying above freezing. Our icicles may soon be a thing of the past. So photograph yours while you still have them and send in the contenders!
And here's a serious contender in the Artistic Icicle (no prizes given) Contest.
Dale Bauer has a single icicle, doing its best to carry the honor of the entire roof.
Depending on the temperatures and melt factor (not a real thing - I just made that up) our No Prizes Given Icicle Contest may be coming to an end - at least for this weather event.
Shoreline Schools on 2 hour delay Tuesday
Shoreline Schools has announced a two hour delay for Tuesday, January 4, 2022.
Due to the continued impacts of recent snow and ice, all Shoreline Schools will be on a TWO-HOUR DELAY Tuesday, January 4.
While arterial streets are passable, there are many streets and sidewalks throughout the district that are not.
Road conditions will be reassessed early tomorrow morning. If a closure is required, an additional announcement will be made by 6:00am.
So it isn't about what you can see out the window or your trip to the grocery store. It's about whether a school bus full of children can safely travel the icy hills of Lake Forest Park and Richmond Beach as well as the other unplowed narrow, residential streets in Shoreline.
The temperatures stayed above freezing Monday and there was a fair amount of melting. The weather has been so crazy that there's no guarantee about 5am when the decisions are made.
WeatherWatcher: Rain turns to wet snow
The driveway next to the car was clear earlier this evening on this Shoreline street.
Photo by JM
Heavy rain Sunday evening from a strong cold front turned to wet snow or rain and snow mixed in the area. Temperatures were more marginal than originally expected and except for Richmond Beach, we remained in the 30's. As of this writing Echo Lake station is right at 32.0°F, Richmond Beach is 33.8°F.  Proximity to Puget Sound and elevation matters in this event.
Our neighbors to the north in Snohomish County -- Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds, Lynnwood, and Everett -- are under a winter weather advisory in effect until 6am. Freeways are covered in snow in Snohomish County and there are some reports of accumulating wet snow of about an inch in Shoreline now.
Another trace to 2 inches of slushy wet snow is possible by 6am Monday morning. It won't last all day, as temperatures are expected to once again reach the upper 30's or low 40's. However, we have more threats of snow potential Monday night, Tuesday night, and all day Wednesday especially if you're above 400 feet in elevation.
A lot of uncertainty in the forecast still exists so it's too early for me to tell what accumulations, if any to expect Wednesday. In general, we are locked in a pretty healthy La Niña atmospheric pattern so I expect that the chance of lowland snow for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park areas to be more significant the next few weeks than normal.
Bottom line: Be prepared for the possibility of continued winter weather, and brief snow events even if they are not in the forecast. Long range models point to a much cooler and wetter period to continue through the month and in our region, it's always right on the margin if it'll be rain or accumulating snow. There are no deep freezes in the near forecast at this time, but I can't rule out another deep freeze or two before winter is over.
WeatherWatcher: Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Thursday
Wednesday, December 29, 2021
January 18, 2012 snow in Shoreline
Photo by Carl Dinse
The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a winter weather advisory in effect Thursday until 7pm. Snow is expected through Thursday tapering off in the afternoon hours. Total new accumulations expected between 2 - 5 inches.
The forecast has little signs of any warmup for the north end, which includes Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Snow is expected all day Thursday ending in the evening hours. Friday, we get a break with sunny skies and more cold temperatures. We are looking at lows in the lower to mid 20's and highs right around freezing, depending on your elevation.
A chance of snow brings in the New Year shortly after midnight with gradual warming during New Year's Day. There is a chance of snow in the morning with the possibility of a chance of rain or snow in the afternoon. Snow levels rise to around 200 feet, so most of the area will still be above the snow level.
Saturday evening through Tuesday we warm up, just a little. High temperatures may make it into the 40's with a chance of rain. Sunday night looks to be our next steady rain event. Longer range shows that by Wednesday next week we could be cooling down again with the threat of at least seeing some snow mix in with rain.
Forecasts continue to have high uncertainty about the warmup in the weekend, and what to expect next week. We'll do our best to keep you up to date with the latest when things become more certain.
Monday December 27, 2021 was officially the coldest day since December 29, 1990. The high temperature on Monday December 27th was 23°F at Sea-Tac. The high on December 29, 1990, only reached 22°F at Sea-Tac. The low this past Monday morning was 17°F at Sea-Tac.
In Shoreline, Monday's high temperature reached 21.6°F, with a low of 14°F. We've recorded a total snow accumulation of 10 inches, but never had 10 inches total on the ground, as some has compressed and evaporated inbetween the smaller snow dumps. There was a total 6 inches on the ground Saturday morning, another 3 inches new snow reported Sunday, and 1 inch new reported Monday at the Richmond Beach station.
