Look what a few good volunteers can do

Bins are full of cattails pulled from Echo Lake

Look what a few good volunteers can do!!!

The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association project to remove invasive cattails from the beach at Echo Lake Park had a setback when everything shut down for the pandemic.

But work parties have resumed and the one on July 27, 2023 was extremely productive.

Five volunteers = 12 compost bins of invasive cattails pulled from Echo Lake!

It was slightly hazardous, though. The lake has become very popular for fishing so you need to be careful where you step. Fish hooks and fishing line were everywhere.

Thank you to volunteers Marla and Matt Tullio, Pat Deagan and Claudia Meadows, Manuele Meyer.

New volunteers can still get in on the fun. Cattail pulling parties are scheduled for
  • Saturday 10am-noon
    • Aug 5th
  • Thursday 4-6pm
    • Aug 17th
    • Aug 31st
There are two kinds of cattails, so you don't have to pull every cattail in the lake. Meet by the beach in Echo Lake Park at N 200th and Ashworth Ave N and be prepared to get in the water.

Washington State Animal Response Team (WASART) rescues dog from mountain trail

Friday, July 28, 2023

Kanu being packaged for transport
Washington State Animal Response Team (WASART) +1 425-681-5498 or 911
is a volunteer organization which rescues pets and livestock in emergency situations: such as dogs over cliffs, horses in wells.

This past Sunday July 23, 2023 they received a call about an American Bulldog-Cane Corso mix named Kahu who was on the new Mailbox trail in the Cascades and unable to make it back to the trailhead.

WASART responded in partnership with King County Search and Rescue Association

Kanu was too fatigued to make it
out on his own.
King County Search and Rescue’s Rapid Alpine Deployment team (Team 1) was first on site and was able to send a hasty team up trail to the dog and owner.

Soon after, Team 2 with members of WASART and ESAR (King County Explorer Search And Rescue) were also on location with the dog.

Kahu had paw damage including a torn paw pad. After bandaging the paw and further evaluation, it was evident that he was too fatigued to continue down the trail on his own.

During that time, Team 3 arrived carrying the rescue litter which was assembled for his ride down.

Making sure Kanu is secured in the litter
Kahu was carefully packaged and secured into the litter. WASART and ESAR members worked together to carry the litter the 2.7 miles back down to the trailhead.

Moving a litter down a trail is hard physical work and arms get tired. Having lots of responders available to switch out and rotate with keeps the litter moving efficiently down the trail.

Volunteers take turns carrying the
heavy litter down the trail.
Once back at the trailhead, he was placed in the owner’s car and they headed to the emergency vet for further care.

The team debriefed, packed up, and headed home.

A huge thank you to King County Explorer Search and Rescue and King County 4x4 Search and Rescue for their assistance. We are fortunate to work alongside some of the best search and rescue organizations.

Are you a Shoreline resident between the ages of 15 and 19? Are you looking for a leadership opportunity or community service hours? Do you want to help shape the future of Shoreline by having a say in the City’s parks, recreation programs, and events?

If you want to gain experience in civic government and make a difference in your community, then become a member of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS)/Tree Board.

The City is accepting applications for one youth position to serve on the PRCS/Tree Board for the 2023/2024 academic year.

The youth appointed to this position has the option to begin their term in July or wait until September as their schedule allows. Per a recently adopted ordinance, Board members will be compensated at a rate of $50 per meeting.

The PRCS/Tree Board advises the City Council and City staff on a variety of issues related to parks, recreation, public art, special events, cultural services, and trees on public property. Topics may include park operation and design; programs and events; property acquisition; arts opportunities; and development of planning documents, rules, or regulations.

The Board meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from January through October and the first Thursday in December from 7:00 to 9:00pm at City Hall. Current Board meetings are held using a hybrid format allowing for either in-person or online attendance.

The youth of our community are users of parks, trails and recreational programs and their representation on the Board is encouraged by the City Council and welcomed by Board members and staff.

If you are interested, you can complete and submit your application online. If you would like to submit a paper application, you can pick one up from the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall and return it there after you have completed it.

Volunteering: One summer's work in Shoreline Park

Wednesday, November 23, 2022

Starting point: August 21, 2022

Two dedicated volunteers, Sara and Cristin, have been spearheading a project to remove blackberries and other invasive plants from Shoreline Park.

Major progress: September 18, 2022

The park, which stretches between 1st and 3rd NE, just north of the Shoreline Center, has always been kept trimmed by the Shoreline Parks department, but the vegetation around the trees is primarily blackberry vines.

November 20, 2022

Sara, Crisin and their family, friends, and neighbors have been working on the park all summer, with dramatic results, as you can tell by the photos.

November 20, 2022
A dramatic difference.

They are through for the year but will be resuming work next year. If you are interested in helping, the work parties will be listed on the Green Shoreline Partnership website or you can contact the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association at ELNABoard@gmail.com or check the ELNA Facebook page for notices.

Volunteers are needed for United Way of King County’s Free Tax Prep Program

Sunday, November 20, 2022

United Way of King County needs volunteers now to help us fight poverty with our Free Tax Preparation Program.

United Way of King County’s Free Tax Preparation program is in its 20th year!

Funded by United Way, the IRS and the City of Seattle, the Free Tax Preparation program runs from January through April and helps people take advantage of earned income tax credits, the nation’s most vital anti-poverty measure.

Volunteers are fully trained and IRS certified to help people keep more of what they earn by leveraging some incredible anti-poverty tax credits and preparing their taxes for free.

We have both in-person and virtual volunteer opportunities, which include:
  • In-Person Tax Preparation Specialists: Prepare tax returns at one of our locations across King County. All specialists are trained to obtain Advanced IRS Tax Law VITA certification.
  • Community Intake Specialists: Assist at our tax sites by maintaining client waitlists, answering questions, and connecting clients to important community resources.
  • Virtual Tax Preparation Specialists: Prepare tax returns and interface with clients online via the Free Tax Preparation Campaign’s end-to-end case management tool.
Note: All locations will exercise strict COVID-19 protocols and CDC guidelines for safety.

You do not need any prior knowledge or training to volunteer, though if you are interested in a virtual opportunity, you MUST have a high degree of computer literacy, a stable internet connection, and be willing and able to communicate with clients by phone.

In general, it is important that our tax volunteers have a friendly attitude, a willingness to be flexible, have general computer experience, and are willing to commit to three to six hours of service a week.

The ability to speak another language is helpful, but not required. Languages in high demand include Spanish, Amharic, Vietnamese, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Russian, Ukrainian, Somali, and Tagalog.

Interested in volunteering? Please click here. Questions? Email us at  freetax@uwkc.org

The Seattle King County free vision clinic runs on volunteers

Monday, October 31, 2022

By Doug Cerretti

Seattle/King County Clinic (SKCC) brings together healthcare organizations, civic agencies, non-profits, private businesses and volunteers from across the State of Washington to produce a giant free health clinic at Seattle Center.

The Clinic is a major function of the Seattle Center Foundation.

The four-day volunteer-driven clinic provides free dental, vision and medical care to anyone in the region who struggles to access and/or afford healthcare.

Patients waiting for their number to be called.
After an absence of three years due to the pandemic, SKCC was held October 20 - 23, 2022.

A complete SKCC was not held due to scheduling conflicts; however a vision clinic was held, offering eye exams and prescription eyeglasses at no cost to patients.

The day started at 6am for patients to receive numbers (250+ waitlisted each day) at the Fischer Pavilion.

Exam room. Photo by Doug Cerretti
They then migrated to Exhibition Hall to be seen by an optometrist or ophthalmologist for eye examination and eyeglass prescriptions.

This was followed by selection and fitting of frames.

Many eyeglass frames to choose from.
I volunteered in “eyeglass processing” where we ensured that the eyeglass order forms were entered into the online order system and then verified their accuracy.

The frames and order forms were packaged for shipping to be fabricated.

Patients will return to Seattle Center December 3-4 to receive their new eyeglasses.

This description barely touches the work of volunteers to make this event run smoothly.

Eyeglass processing; order forms generated on the right and verified on the left.

There were volunteers to check in the volunteers and patients, escorts and waiting area monitors, interpreters, IT support, patients records processing, supply sorting, health insurance navigators and social workers and last, but not least, the visual medical professionals.

When all is said and done over a thousand people will receive new eyeglasses with the aid of 1100 volunteers.
2018 dental clinic. Photo by Doug Cerretti
As large as the vision clinic is, the complete SKCC with dental, vision and medical care is four times larger. Over four days approximately 4000 patients are treated with the aid of approximately 4000 volunteers.

The enormity of the complete SKCC is illustrated by the 118 dental chairs on the floor of the Key Arena in 2018.

Dental x-ray station. Note the hand-held
X-ray gun on the left. Photo by Doug Cerretti
I volunteered at the dental x-ray station in the last two complete SKCC in 2018 and 2019.

There I entered the x-ray images into the computer, that the dental technicians had produced using hand held x-ray guns.

The next complete SKCC will be held April 2023.

Volunteering at SKCC is very satisfying and rewarding and I highly recommend it.

Doug Cerretti with ray-gun. "Buck
Rogers doesn’t have anything
on me." Photo by Carrie Stewart.
The first step is to register as a volunteer at https://seattlecenter.org/volunteers/ where your experience is noted such as medical, language abilities or computer experience, for example.

However, there are many volunteer opportunities that do not require specific skills as SKCC simply requires your time.

As the next SKCC approaches you will be sent schedules and volunteer opportunities.
