United Way of King County seeking volunteers to help working families with tax preparation

Saturday, February 19, 2022

SEATTLE – Tax season is back! And this tax season, United Way of King County’s Free Tax Preparation Campaign is proud to announce the return of in-person tax assistance as well as virtual tax service – after nearly two years of reduced service due to COVID-19.

Our tax preparation services are a convenient option available to you, your family members, and your community!

From now through April 21, 2022 United Way is offering free tax preparation services both virtually and in-person at 11 locations throughout King County.

The Free Tax Preparation is for any household with an income under $70,000. Filers can be connected to other community resources and public benefits by request.

COVID-19 considerations: In accordance with public health guidance and for the safety of program participants, tax clients and guests over 12-years old must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Masking is always required on-site. For further information on our COVID-19 policies and site requirements visit www.FreeTaxExperts.org

There are three easy ways to file:

In-Person: File your taxes in-person at one of 11 locations throughout King County. Locations have convenient hours to meet your schedule, and no appointments are needed. To find a location near you, languages available, a list of what to bring, and other details, visit United Way’s website at www.FreeTaxExperts.org or call 2-1-1.

The two closest locations are Lake City and the UW Campus.

Virtually – with assistance from a volunteer: Interested in filing your taxes virtually but don’t feel comfortable doing it on your own? We’re happy to help! Visit https://www.GetYourRefund.org

Please note: Our virtual tax assistance slots are limited. Also, if you do not feel comfortable sharing sensitive information like your Social Security Number or personal identification information online, or with navigating a web client, please come see us in person.

Virtually – without assistance (no income limit on this software!): Feel comfortable filing your own taxes and just wish there was a way to do it yourself for free? Then look no further! File your taxes online at 100% no cost with United Way’s ‘My Free Taxes’ tool at www.MyFreeTaxes.com

Homeless
In addition to offering these tax services, United Way’s tax team partnered with Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness and AT/T to conduct outreach to people experiencing homelessness before tax filing deadlines.

The tax team also secured grants from the IRS and City of Seattle and launched a new partnership with King County 2-1-1, a free telephone number for access to local community services. It is part of our way of helping to take the stress out of tax season.

Volunteer - if you have the skills and are able to help, sign up here for either in person or remote work https://www.uwkc.org/volunteer/

Volunteer opportunities at The Oaks

Monday, December 6, 2021

The Oaks photo from Google maps

The Enhanced Shelter at The Oaks has been in operation for about 6 months. We have 60+ participants, including couples and pets, that have also been availing of our in-house case management services.

Some folks have been attending to their medical needs and are recuperating, thanks to our public health nurse on staff. A few residents set up a vegetable garden in the summer in the building courtyard with help from staff and Diggin' Shoreline volunteers. A couple of residents are participating in regular cleanups of the building surroundings. Folks are acquiring ID's, securing jobs, and two couples recently moved into housing.

If you would like to receive email newsletters from Lake City Partners, please visit https://lakecitypartners.org, scroll toward the bottom of the page until you see "Join our Mailing List". Enter your email address and click "Submit". Or, email chitra@lakecitypartners.org

Here are a few opportunities to volunteer

Companionship Hosts: This opportunity is for those interested in getting to know our residents and assisting in providing a welcoming environment. This role will consist of working in four hour shifts in the foyer of The Oaks, sitting with residents in companionship.

Volunteers will make coffee, maintain the coffee bar and assist our Shelter Navigators with light cleaning of the space. We ask that volunteers interested in this position commit to one shift every 10 days. A consistent presence and welcoming attitude will enrich the space greatly.

Cleanup for Fall/Winter: We are inviting a group of volunteers on the outside property of The Oaks for a single or series of clean up events. Tasks will include sweeping up leaves, helping to prepare the garden for winter and beautifying the courtyard. A great opportunity for an organization or family.

Gift Making: We are requesting donations of materials to make handmade gifts as well as time assisting residents in crafting their gift. Some gift ideas include card making, painting or jewelry making. We are open to suggestions of any ideas that volunteers would like to facilitate at The Oaks.

Gift delivery assistance: For the winter holidays, many residents will want to send a gift either locally or across the country. We are requesting that volunteers sign up to help a resident (or a few!) to send their gift to a friend or family member. This will include picking up the gift, donating shipping costs and getting it in the mail.

The North King County Shelter at The Oaks is a King County housing project run by Lake City Partners. It is located in Shoreline at 16357 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA, 98133.

Reforesting Grace Cole Nature Park

Saturday, December 4, 2021

Volunteers and restoration stewards at Grace Cole Nature Park

On Saturday November 20, 2021 a work party of ten restoration stewards and eight volunteers increased the biodiversity in Grace Cole Park. They planted 128 conifers and shrubs including: Sword Ferns, Salal, Western Red Cedar and Western White Pine trees.

Joy Wood of RAD teaches volunteers how to plant spruce trees

Planting trees was the tip of the iceberg in the restoration process. Six months of prep work went into this effort. There was site planning and evaluation to determine what areas to work on.

Next, several months of removal and composting of noxious weeds such as ivy, holly and blackberry. Plants were selected and placed at five restoration sites in the park. These areas will be monitored to control weeds and ensure the health of the new trees and shrubs.  The cycle of restoration will repeat in other areas of the park.

Volunteers and stewards at Grace Cole Nature Park

For the restoration stewards, this planting marked the halfway point in a year-long training program that started in June 2021. The program has two major goals. First, stewards work together to reach site-specific ecological decisions within Grace Cole Park. In addition, work with the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation and the City of Lake Forest Park to equitably  recruit, retain, and work with a diversity of community volunteers.

A restoration steward demonstrates how to plant to ensure survival

The restoration stewardship training program is a partnership with the King Conservation District (KCD), the City of Lake Forest Park, the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF), and Restoration Analytics and Design LLC (RAD), Cory Roche from City of Lake Forest Park along with Jean Robbins, Jim Mead, and John Brew from LFPSF to support the training program.

Thirteen people are participating in the restoration stewardship program. They spend one Thursday each month learning about invasive plants, native plant selection, leading effective work parties and the details of soils.

First you have to remove the invasive species

Joy Wood (RAD) and Mike Lasecki (KCD) are the lead facilitators. Joy and Mike have tapped other restoration subject matter experts to teach in their area of expertise. For example, Britt Le of EarthCorps taught the stewards how to lead and manage large volunteer events, tool safety, and planting techniques.

The  following Saturday, the tools meet the dirt as lessons are applied within Grace Cole park along with a group of community volunteers. Stewards and volunteers work with enthusiasm and great spirit; rain or shine. All share the goal of increasing the biodiversity and restoring the natural beauty of Grace Cole Park.

All volunteers are trained and mentored by restoration specialists

If this sounds like fun, please come join a work party at Grace Cole Park from 9 to noon on the third Saturday of each month. Please contact the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation at info@lfpsf.org for more info on work parties at Grace Cole. Residence in  Lake Forest Park is not a requirement to join the fun.

Grace Cole Nature Park is located in Lake Forest Park.

Help plant native trees and shrubs in Twin Ponds Park on Nov 6 and Nov 13

Monday, October 11, 2021

Weeding at Twin Ponds Park

Help is needed to restore a healthy urban forest habitat in an area much degraded by the peat mines that occupied Twin Ponds Park for most of the past century.

Areas denuded of native trees and shrubs were covered by stands of blackberry and other invasive weeds which crowded out any indigenous plants, destroying any chance of having a natural habitat of mutually supportive plants and animals.

Student earning service hours by digging out blackberry roots

Trained stewards and community volunteers, including Shoreline high school students earning community volunteer credit needed for graduation, have worked for over four years cutting down weeds, digging up deeply embedded roots, and continuously following up as weeds return.

A large area bounded by the soccer field on the north, First Avenue on the East, a bridge over Thornton Creek on the West and the parking lot to the South has been planted with native trees, shrubs and groundcovers which provide a healthier habitat for all types of wildlife.

This brother and sister are loading mulch

New plantings in the wetland areas along Thornton Creek are thriving.

Now at the end of a very successful year of safe outdoor work during the pandemic, a large area across from the Community Garden is ready for 200 plants.

This year the work is supported by the "Green Shoreline Partnership", made up of the Shoreline Park Department and Forterra, a nonprofit organization sponsoring urban forest restoration in western Washington.

These three dug a hole 9 feet by 3 feet and 3 feet deep to get rid of blackberry roots

Please join volunteers wishing to make an impact on the environment in their own community. You could not only make the park beautiful but will establish an improved habitat for all wildlife.

Neighbors walking in the park will enjoy the spring blossoms on the shrubs and will appreciate your work.

LFP Crime Watch is back in operation - opportunities for volunteers

Friday, July 9, 2021

The Lake Forest Park Police Department Crime Watch Volunteers are back in service and vacation checks are operational again!

This is a program staffed by volunteers who check homes of residents who are out of town and sign up via our Vacation House Check Form https://www.cityoflfp.com/576/Vacation-House-Check

This service has been a valued part of the community for over 20 years; however, the group is in need of additional volunteers. We are currently looking for volunteers who are willing to help continue to make our community safe and have a few hours a week to donate.

The program expects a minimum commitment of two days a month, approximately 6-10 hours total.

Duties include driving through the city, walking in the parks, walking around houses that have signed up for our vacation check program and inspecting the premises for problems. This usually takes 1.5 – 2.5 hours per shift, depending on the number of houses.

Activities are recorded in a notebook, and we always patrol in pairs. Volunteers are provided with appropriate identifiable clothing, proper identification, and the use of our crime prevention vehicle while volunteering for the city. The volunteer will need to pass a background check.

If you know of anyone that is interested, please either call or email Casey Krzyminski, Lake Forest Park Police Crime Prevention Coordinator at 206-364-8216 x526 or casey@cityoflfp.com

Council seeks volunteers for voters’ pamphlet pro and con committees for Shoreline Proposition 1: General Obligation Bonds Parks Improvements and Park Land Acquisition

Saturday, July 3, 2021

Hillwood is one of five parks slated for major improvements on the Nov bond

At their June 28, 2021 meeting, the Shoreline City Council unanimously approved placing a bond measure for parks improvements and park land acquisition on the November 2, 2021, general election ballot. The measure includes money for park improvements and park land acquisitions.

Accompanying the November ballots will be the King County Voters’ Pamphlet. The pamphlet will include an explanatory statement from the City that states the effect of the bond measure if approved.

In response will be statements in support and opposition to the ballot measure. State law requires the City Council to appoint two committees to draft the pro and con statements. The committees can have no more than three members each; however, the committees may seek advice from any person or persons. The committees will also have an opportunity to write a rebuttal statement to the other side’s statement.

Individuals interested in applying for one of the committee positions can fill out an online application. Applications are due by July 15 at 10:00am. The City Council will review the applications and appoint the committee members at its July 19 business meeting.

To learn more about the requirements for the voter’s pamphlet and the duties of the pro and con committees, review the 2021 Jurisdiction Manual at King County Elections.

Volunteers and Advisors needed for Northwest Neighbors Network

Tuesday, June 15, 2021

Are you looking to give back to the community? Are you looking for opportunities to organize and host events? Are you looking forward to summer coming and the opportunity to do some fun activities with seniors?

Northwest Neighbors Network (NNN) is creating an advisory council while also recruiting for volunteers to help with social and outreach activities. NNN’s mission is to help seniors age well in their own homes by providing services and events. As a volunteer-run organization, NNN’s volunteers really are the backbone of our organization!

NNN is one of several hundred virtual villages across the U.S. that help seniors age well in their own homes by providing volunteer services and events. NNN serves residents in north King County (Shoreline and Lake Forest Park) and south Snohomish County (Edmonds, Brier, Woodway, Lynnwood, and Mountlake Terrace).

Advisory Council

We are looking for volunteer experts to advise the NNN board in the following areas: legal, human resources, insurance, healthcare, senior living, finance, fundraising, marketing/outreach, program development and evaluation, or low-income populations.

This would be a two-year term, and you would serve as a valuable resource on any issues that arise. NNN would contact you no more than 4-5 times a year. Your expertise would be much appreciated as we grow and expand our service areas.

Volunteers

Now that things are starting to open up more, our services will be in more demand. During the pandemic, NNN has been quite active, helping members with transportation to medical appointments, running errands, and helping with gardening and light housework. NNN members continue to meet for outdoor walks and socially distanced lunches. There are plans to expand those social and outreach opportunities, and we would love your help!

We are looking for volunteers to help with organizing and hosting events, developing new events and activities based on member interests, distributing materials to the community, helping to establish partnerships with other community groups and more! Time commitment is flexible, approximately 3-5 hours a week!

Please contact info@northwestneighborsnetwork.org or call 253-237-2848 to learn more! NNN is committed to an environment where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.

Grace Cole work party Saturday will use a motorized wheelbarrow to get wood chips to the upper reaches of the park

Saturday, April 17, 2021

Lake Forest Park
Saturday, April 17, 2021 9am

This is a reminder about the Grace Cole Work Party tomorrow, April 17, 2021. It will be a glorious day weather-wise, so I hope to see you there. We will begin at 9am for a gathering at the kiosk to list all of the goals for the day.

Some of these are listed below:
  • We are renting a motorized wheelbarrow to allow us to haul wood chips up to the upper reaches of the park.
  • Clean up and wood chip spreading at the front entrance, and several other prominent locations.
  • Some potted plants to distribute and plant
  • Instruction and use of weed wrenches to remove small holly and laurel trees
  • Ivy removal from the upper hillsides
We still are not out of the pandemic so social distancing and PPE should be practiced. Many have received vaccinations, but to ease concerns of others, those folks still need to wear PPE when near others.

Even though it will be warm tomorrow, I recommend long pants and gloves. The nettles and berry vines will remind you of that suggestion should you forget. We have many of the tools at the shed, but if you have a favorite one, bring it along.

I saw the city pressure washing the boardwalk yesterday. Thanks to them for getting that done. The lower reaches of the park are still wetlands, so most of the work will be concentrated in the upper areas and along the main footpath.

Thanks for your participation and Happy Spring!

James Mead
